S1 Ep 218Ryan Rondeno: Cooking & Celebrity Chef-dom

E

Chef Ryan Rondeno has a passion for French, Italian and Regional American Cuisine. Daily he introduces his clients to new cuisine with his focus on local, sustainable cuisine with a strong emphasis on bold flavors. Chef Rondeno continues to revamp his own style of cooking with the love of New Orleans cuisine and fresh California flavors. Born in Metairie, Louisiana, Ryan Rondeno began a fortunate culinary upbringing surrounded by great southern cooks, including his grandfather who was a local legendary chef. He began his career at 16 working as a New Orleans prep cook, where his love for Cajun-Creole cuisine began. After graduating high school, he attended The Chef John Culinary Institute in Thibodaux, Louisiana. While in school, he working under the late Chef Jamie Shannon of Commander’s Palace, who instilled the importance of restaurant service, and Chef Anne Kearney of Peristyle, who focused on detail and perfection. These two chefs helped Rondeno build a strong foundation of southern cooking and superb technique. After obtaining a college degree, he worked with chefs Emeril Lagasse, Anton Schulte, Mathais Wolf, Sue Zemenick, and Gerard Maras to enrich his culinary repertoire. Rondeno established culinary techniques in French, Italian, Southern, Cajun-Creole, and farm-to-table cuisines under remarkable chef-teachers and mentors. The opposing schools of stark simplicity and grand detail expanded Rondeno’s culinary range, allowing him to strike a balance to develop his own gastronomic flare. When Hurricane Katrina forced thousands to evacuate their homes in New Orleans, Rondeno relocated to Atlanta in 2005. It was there he rejoined the Emeril Lagasse Corporation as a saucier, butcher, and sous chef under Chef Michael Blydenstein. As he continued to hone his skills, Rondeno moved to New York where he became Executive Chef at a Southern style seasonal restaurant. In 2008, Chef Rondeno relocated to Los Angeles, and is currently a personal to celebrity clients. His culinary focus is on the use of grass-fed organic meats and locally-grown organic produce, with an emphasis on creating bold flavors. As his cooking continues to evolve toward clean eating and the use of sustainable products, Chef Rondeno continues his work as a chef for his celebrity clientele, including the catering for gala dinners and large-scale culinary events. In 2014, Chef Rondeno started Rondeno Culinary Designs. Chef Rondeno focuses on creating crafty and elegant bites for his clientele. I have found the perfect mix of combining New Orleans cuisine and fresh California flavors. In 2016, he developed the Ryan Rondeno Spice Collection (Nola Creole Rub, Citrus Herb Rub, and Ancho-Chili BBQ Rub). His focus was to help cooks enhance the flavor of the dishes. S1 Ep 216Latoya Shauntay Snell: Running, Racism, and the Call to LISTEN

E

I asked Latoya to come on the podcast to talk about running and body image, sure. BUT I really wanted to talk about racism. As a woman who has enjoyed not only privilege in traditional sense, but white privilege, I want to listen. I want to understand. I really wanted to talk about Ahmaud Arbery and the things that have been happening in our country that white people don't understand, can't understand. That I contend that we SHOULD try to LISTEN, LEARN and really HEAR. I knew that she was not a voice for "all black people," but I do know that I wanted to hear her perspective, as a black woman. I wanted to LISTEN. This is one of the most powerful conversations ever on the podcast. We got honest, real and I am grateful she was so open with me and my audience. Onward to more LISTENING. Thank you, Latoya. S1 Ep 215Lauren McGoodwin: Power Moves & Career Contessa

E

Lauren founded Career Contessa in 2013 after experiencing a gap in career development resources for women who might be job searching, soul searching, leading and managing, or trying to find new ways to advance within their careers. With women accounting for more than 50% of the workforce and the workforce being less defined than ever before, it seemed crazy (and outdated) that a resource for us didn't exist. Formerly, Lauren was a University Recruiter for Hulu focused on hiring, employer branding, and program management. Lauren has a Bachelors in Education from the University of Oregon and a Masters in Communication Management from the University of Southern California where she wrote her thesis on millennials and career resources. When not Contessa-ing, you can find Lauren walking so she meets her 10,000 steps/day goal in Redondo Beach, CA where she lives with her husband. S1 Ep 213Jen Hatmaker: Fierce, Free and Full of Fire

Jen Hatmaker joined my community for a LIVE recording of the podcast via Zoom. We covered all the bases, y'all. From body image to the Enneagram (Jen's a 3, I'm an 8), to "the truth will set you free" and how The King's Daughters often present the biggest challenges. We talk grace, forgiveness, self-awareness; criticism and pain; community and finding new friendships. Two powerful questions from audience members, Kimberlea and Rebekah, round off the show. Jen writes: "I believe women living in freedom are the answer to all that ails society. When we are exactly who we are, how we are, where we are, as we were always meant to be, women are the greatest gifts to this world. My whole life’s work is to serve women as they genuinely show up for their own lives. We need not fear the truth, or hard questions, or spiritual curiosity, or challenging unjust systems; that is literally why we are here... You are beloved and necessary and good." A special thanks to Jen for her time, grace, wisdom... and all of her fierceness that is giving women a voice and a space to be heard. S1 Ep 186Rev. Jeff Grant: When to Move in a Time of Stuck

E

Back on the podcast - one of my favorite people, Jeff Grant. I first heard him last year on Rich Roll's podcast, we connected and he was a guest on Episode 112. You can listen here. After we spoke on the Daily Community Meeting yesterday, we decided to put up a podcast for today - words for a time we need HOPE. He IS the epitome of hope. Rev. Jeff Grant, JD., M.Div. is an ordained minister with over three decades of experience in crisis management, business, law, reentry, recovery (clean & sober 16+ years), and executive & religious leadership. He provides confidential pastoral and spiritual care and support to individuals, families and organizations in the areas of personal crisis management, criminal justice/prisoner reentry, opioid and substance abuse, bipolar disorder/mental illness, and interfaith religion. Sometimes referred to in the press as “The Minister to Hedge Funders,” he regularly uses his experience and background to guide people faithfully forward in their lives, relationships, careers and business opportunities, and to help them from making the kinds of decisions that previously resulted in loss, suffering and shame. As an ordained minister, conversations and communications between Jeff and those he serves fall under clergy privilege laws. This is one reason that attorneys often allow and encourage their clients to maintain relationships with Jeff while in active prosecution or litigation situations. After an addiction to prescription opioids and serving almost fourteen months in a Federal prison for a white-collar crime he committed when he was a lawyer, Jeff started his own reentry – earning a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York, with a focus in Christian Social Ethics. After graduating from divinity school, Jeff was called to serve at an inner city church in Bridgeport, CT as Associate Minister and Director of Prison Ministries. He, and his wife and partner-in-ministry Lynn Springer, then co-founded Progressive Prison Ministries, Inc. (Greenwich, CT), the first ministry in the United States created to provide confidential support and pastoral care to individuals, families and organizations with white-collar and other nonviolent incarceration issues. S1 Ep 179Glenn Livingston, PhD: Never Binge Again

E

This BOOK, Never Binge Again, has changed the way I view binge eating... ONCE AND FOR ALL. You can get this book, Never Binge Again, for FREE at www.YouCanStopOvereating.com I could breathe a sigh of relief after I finished "Never Binge Again." I am glad that I saw the book all the way through and approached it with an open mind, because it has SAVED me so much heartache, wasted binges and self-hatred. I am so excited to not only have Glenn on the podcast, BUT also provide you a FREE COPY of his book and more info on his amazing coaching. Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You may have seen his (or his company's) previous work, theories, and research in major periodicals like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun Times, The Indiana Star Ledger, The NY Daily News, American Demographics, or any of the other major media outlets you see on this page. You may also have heard him on ABC, WGN, and/or CBS radio, or UPN TV. Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food. S1 Ep 177Mike Matthews: Thinner (or Bigger), Leaner, Stronger

E

Mike Matthews believes that EVERYONE can have the body they want. We could have talked FOREVER on all the things, but I know that I fell IN LOVE with the TRUTH in his book: Thinner, Leaner, Stronger this past summer. My guy friends love his book, Bigger Leaner Stronger, BTW. He writes, "My mission is to give everyone that opportunity by providing time-proven, evidence-based advice on how to build muscle, lose fat, and get and stay healthy. I’ve been training for more than a decade now. In that time, I’ve read thousands of pages of scientific literature and tried just about every type of workout program, diet regimen, and supplement you can imagine. At this point, I can confidently say that while I don’t know everything, I know what works and what doesn’t. Like most people who get into weightlifting, I had no clue what I was doing when I started out. I turned to fitness magazines for help, which told me to spend a couple of hours in the gym every day and hundreds of dollars on pills and powders every month. This went on for years, and I jumped from diet to diet, workout program to workout program, and supplement to supplement, only to make mediocre progress and eventually get stuck in a rut. I then turned to personal trainers for guidance, but they had me do more of the same. After spending many thousands of dollars with them, I still hadn’t gained any more muscle or strength to speak of, and I still had no idea what to do with my diet and training to reach my goals. I liked working out too much to quit, but I wasn’t happy with my body and didn’t know what I was doing wrong. I didn’t look bad by any means, but that’s not exactly what you’d expect from 1500-plus hours of working out with no extended breaks. I finally decided that something had to change, and I knew that I needed to start with learning the actual physiology of muscle growth and fat loss. So I threw the magazines away, fired the trainers, got off the internet forums, and searched out the work of top strength and bodybuilding coaches, talked to scores of natural bodybuilders, and started reading scientific papers. Several months later, a clear picture was beginning to emerge. The real science of getting into incredible shape is very simple—much simpler than the fitness industry wants us to believe. It flies in the face of a lot of the stuff we see on TV, Instagram, and YouTube and read in books, articles, and magazines. For example: You don’t need supplements to build a great physique. You don’t need to constantly change up your workout routine to “confuse” your muscles. You don’t need to “eat clean” to get and stay lean. You don’t need to stop eating carbs and sugars to lose weight. You don’t need to eat small meals every few hours to “boost your metabolism.” You don’t need to grind out hours and hours of boring cardio every week to get a ripped core. You don’t need to be in the gym hours per day and sacrifice your relationships with your friends and loved ones. As a result of what I had learned, I completely changed my approach to eating and exercising, and my body responded in ways I couldn’t believe. My strength skyrocketed. My muscles started growing again. My energy levels went through the roof. And here’s the kicker: I was spending less time in the gym, doing less cardio, and eating foods I actually liked." S1 Ep 176Janet Reich Elsbach: Extra Helping

JANET REICH ELSBACH lives in a rural community in Western Massachusetts. She teaches writing to high school students and to adults with developmental disabilities and, for over ten years, was a counselor to new and growing families. She writes about how all the numerous things going on in the average life collide with making dinner on her blog A Raisin & a Porpoise. Janet is a graduate of Stanford University with a degree in Anthropology and a focus on writing and holds a Masters in Education from New York University. She has chased strange ingredients, healing nutrition, and good food all her life and is a regular contributor to the Berkshire Festival of Women Writers. Her writing has appeared on Food52, Modern Loss, Manifest Station, Role/Reboot, and Verily Magazine. Get the Book Extra Helping: https://www.amazon.com/Extra-Helping-Connecting-Building-Community/dp/161180602X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=extra+helping&qid=1580484617&sr=8-1 Reviews about the Book “Extra Helping is a generous, nourishing, and luminous work. More than a cookbook, it’s a reminder of the role food can play in connecting and healing us—especially during difficult days. It is a timely and hopeful work, crafted with boundless heart and love.”—Dave Isay, founder of StoryCorps “Extra Helping is the definitive guide for those of us who express love through the gift of food. Liberally dredged in Janet’s warm, witty prose, you’ll want to devour both the writing and recipes like buckwheat-studded chocolate bark, richly spiced tofu chorizo, and chocolate pudding so silky it will make you weep with joy. These dishes travel easily to loved ones in need of TLC, but also risk becoming part of your everyday repertoire.”—Alanna Taylor-Tobin, author of Alternative Baker: Reinventing Dessert with Gluten-Free Grains and Flours “Whether life is in joyful disarray or has been upended by sorrow, Extra Helping is the cookbook you need. A master class in the art of nurture, the gift of this volume is that simply leafing through its pages leaves the reader feeling soothed, calmed, and ready to offer support to friends, family, and community. If food is your preferred expression of love, you will feel instantly at home within these pages.”—Marisa McClellan, author of Naturally Sweet Food in Jars “Finally, a book that gives us the courage to make a difference and the tools to get there. Now we can help our friends through the roughest year or even the roughest Thursday, whether it’s with congee, carnitas, ginger custard, or the greatest chocolate pudding I’ve ever tasted. Extra Helping will make you a better cook, a better friend, and a better human.”—Alana Chernila, author of Eating from the Ground Up “There’s a ton of wisdom in this book. Truthfully, it’s not so much a cookbook as it is a manual about how to nurture with recipes as the supporting actors. But those recipes happen to be quite alluring. I’ve been immersed in recipes for forty years, and this lineup really offers a new slant. It made me want to go straight to the kitchen and start cooking.”—Sara Moulton, host of Sara’s Weeknight Meals and author of Sara Moulton’s Home Cooking 101 “Just reading Extra Helping is healing, as it gently talks you through the sort of sustenance that will get you through a tough spell, as well as provide you with enough support to help someone you care about in a meaningful way. Everything is restoratively delicious—the broths and soups are effortless and the hot drinks feel imperative. And in case you’re wondering, the cookies, meatballs, tiny pancakes, and teeny cakes all feel like exactly what I want to eat to feel well and good and happy, always.”—Maggie Battista, author of Food Gift Love "A small, quirky, and insanely kind collection, Elsbach's first cookbook combines elements of Mollie Katzen’s The Moosewood Cookbook and Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything oeuvres. With a unique tone and caring approach, Elsbach identifies eight different lifecycle occasions, from births to passings, that demand lovingly delivered food. Her audience is everyone who wants to help their friends and loved ones during such times, and she provides 70–plus recipes for doing just that."—Booklist, starred review ====================== Request to Join the FREE Meredith Atwood Community & Coaching https://meredith-atwood-coaching.mn.co/ ====================== Buy Meredith’s Books: The Year of No Nonsense https://amzn.to/3su5qWp Triathlon for the Every Woman: https://amzn.to/3nOkjiH ======================= Follow Meredith Atwood & The Podcast on Social: Web: http://www.swimbikemom.com Instagram: http://instagram.com/swimbikemom ======================= Want to Connect?
