Ep 342Corinna Bellizzi: Nutrition without Compromise - R4R 342
Corinna Bellizzi is an impact entrepreneur, a climate activist, and host of two podcasts, "Nutrition without Compromise" and "Care More, Be Better. " She's passionate about sustainable nutrition, especially omega-3s, which are essential for everyone to survive and for runners and other athletes to thrive. Most people think of fish oil when they think of EPA and DHA supplements, but Corinna believes in going directly to the source: algae, which is not only better for people, but for the planet. For complete show notes and links, visit our website at runningforreal.com/episode342. Thank you to Athletic Greens, Örlö, and Allbirds for sponsoring this episode. Ep 341Liz Rock: Movement Is Power - R4R 341
Running is much more than a sport to Liz Rock, co-founder of the Bra Run and the women's running crew, TrailblazHers. Its impact on her goes far beyond the physical benefits. As Liz says, "Running has been such a huge pillar in my life that it's legit changed who I am." She's changing the lives of other women, as well. TrailblazHers isn't about competition; it's about collaboration. It takes a holistic approach to its community, caring about its members' mental, spiritual and emotional health, not just the mileage that they run. It's about women believing in themselves and holding space for each other. For complete show notes and links, visit our website at runningforreal.com/episode341. Thank you to Tracksmith, Örlö, and Athletic Greens for sponsoring this episode. Tracksmith is an independent running brand inspired by a deep love of the sport. For years the brand has elevated running wear using best-in-class materials and timeless silhouettes that perform at the highest level and can be worn everyday, not just for running. Tracksmith helps the environment by making comfortable, durable clothes that will last for years, rather than winding up in the landfill, but that's not the only contribution they make. They supported Running for Real in creating our RED-S: Realize. Reflect. Recover program. They help athletes who are trying to make the Olympic trials, and they offer scholarships for creatives to work on their crafts. They also have lots of events - Tina will be hosting events with them at the Boston and London marathons. Go here and use the code TINA15 at checkout. It will give you free shipping and Tracksmith will donate 5% of your order to Rising Hearts, the Indigenous-led nonprofit founded by Jordan Marie Daniels. Örlö is the world's most sustainable algae supplement. They help you take care of your brain health, heart health, and immune system, and your body absorbs them three times better than fish oil. They also don't have that fishy aftertaste! Örlö's algae is grown in pristine water in Iceland using only green energy and they employ a carbon-negative production process. 99% less land and water resources are used, so you get 100% of the benefit with 0% of the guilt! It's simple to make and it tastes good! This is the time of year when our immune systems can use a boost, not only because it's cold and flu season, but because with less sunlight, our vitamin D levels drop. Go here to get five free travel packs of AG1, and they'll also send you a free one year's supply of vitamin D3+K2 with your subscription, to help keep you healthy year-round. Thanks for listening! Ep 325Christopher McDougall and Eric Orton: Competition Can Be Fun - R4R 325
Thirteen years ago, Christopher McDougall's best-selling book, Born to Run, introduced the world to the Tarahumara tribe and created an intense interest in minimalist running. In it, Chris described his own journey from chronically injured runner to running 50 miles through Mexico's Copper Canyon. He was guided by coach Eric Orton, without whom, he says, there would have been "no Born to Run. I would not have run; I would not be running today." Chris and Eric have teamed up again to write Born to Run 2: The Ultimate Training Guide, with the goal of bringing more joy into running. Ep 15Weekly Strides: Why Is Taking a Day Off So Hard? - Ep. 15
Why do I find taking a rest day or periodization week so difficult? Are there any mental tricks to overcome this struggle with resting? Oooh, I hear you with this one. Not so much nowadays, but in my past, taking a day off was much harder than pushing through and adding another training day. We are so used to the grind, to hustling. After all, that's what the very best athletes tell us, right? That they are gritty, they work the hardest, and they are willing to go deep into the hurt cave. I know it, as I told myself those things and did those things too. But here is the part they don't say, that I couldn't say; they struggle with days off too. When the Olympics, world championships or marathon major is done, often they feel empty, alone, and question their identity. Without the grind of pushing towards that goal, who are they? So to answer your question, why do you find it so difficult, I ask you what it is you get from running. Is your identity so wrapped up in it that even a rest day or a few easy days send you into a panic that you are losing fitness? That you are going to be "slow" (remember, slow is relative; stop comparing yourself to elites, slow for you), or that you won't know what to talk about with family and friends who know to talk to you about running as that's what you love to do? There are no mental tricks for this, because the only way to really work through it is to loosen your grip on running and what it means to you. I am not saying, "Don't go for a goal" or "Don't push yourself to see what you are capable of," that is beautiful and I think good for us all in this world of comfort. But I suspect you are very tied to the outcomes of your training in terms of performance or in terms of your body and what it looks like, over what it has already accomplished. If you want mental tricks of what to work on, it is likely going to be to dig into why it makes you uncomfortable (through a journal, meditation, or just being still); what is it that you think you will lose by taking a day off? The running answer will come first, but dig deeper; what is it about YOU that makes taking your foot off the gas (likely in other areas of life too) so hard? For me, it was once I was able to realize that missing a few runs wouldn't do much harm, but also that I was still a valid human being, even if I didn't reach my running goals (or any other goals, for that matter). Not the answer you wanted to hear, but it's likely a case of mental health and by working on that, either with a therapist or on your own, you will find those "mental tricks." Just maybe not in the way you expected ;) Thanks for listening! We know there are so many podcasts you could listen to, and we're honored you have chosen Running For Real. Ep 14Weekly Strides: What Are "Together Runs"? Can I Use Them for Races? - Ep. 14
What are "Together Runs"? Can I use them for races? This is one of those moments I wish that I were more concise, but let me do my best. The basic idea of a Together Run is that I take a small microphone with me on my run, and talk into it. First we start out with some meditative/grounding elements, such as touching an element of nature, completing a body scan, checking in with our five primary senses, and giving ourselves time to process the question, "How are you, really?" It's a mental health check-in. After that, we have a conversation. I say "we," because it really will feel like you and I are side by side running together. I do not filter what I say and do not plan it ahead of time; I just let my thoughts flow as they come to me naturally, and give spaces for you to share what's going on in your life. If you haven't already tried it, I hope you will. Can you use them for races? Yes, I guess you could. They might be a little bit on the relaxed side for a race, especially if you are going for a goal or wanting to push yourself hard in a race, but stay tuned, we may have something coming for that in future ;) That said, I did record myself in one race, the GO! St Louis Half Marathon, so you could join me for that if you're racing. Thanks for listening! Ep 13Weekly Strides: What Are Some of the Negative Side Effects of Vitamin D Deficiency? - Ep. 13
What are some of the negative side effects of Vitamin D deficiency? Oooh, that's an interesting question, and one that I have been interested in for years, long before my relationship with Athletic Greens began and long before Athletic Greens began that special offer of a one year free supply of Vitamin D and K2 for my friends (quick side note, that combination of D3+K2 is a powerful combination and helps maximize efficiency). We need Vitamin D for healthy bones as our bodies can only absorb calcium when there is Vitamin D also present in our bodies. So a negative side effect would be that we are putting our bone density at risk by not giving our bodies the opportunity to be able to absorb calcium. Especially if there is a chance that RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) is present, we are putting our bones under a lot of stress. Beyond that, Vitamin D helps support our immune system, which helps us fight off sickness and be able to handle our training better. While I don't have any science to back it up, a lot of runner friends I know who have been feeling extreme fatigue and struggling in workouts have ended up getting bloodwork done and found they had low Vitamin D levels. All of those things sound important enough to me to prioritize it! In the summer, we can get it easier from the sun, but in the winter months, we may need a supplement to support us (which again, is why I love that AG1 Vit D+K2 which is in an olive oil blend, so it absorbs easily). Ep 12Weekly Strides: What Makes a "Good" Runner? - Ep. 12
What makes a "good" runner? Ooof! Well, that is quite the question! I believe we each have a different answer for that one. One of the beautiful things about running is that there are so many reasons people run, and our answers may change over time, which I think is wonderful. If you asked me what a "good" runner was five years ago, I would have told you something along the lines of, someone who competes at the local level and finishes in the top third of their field. Now? I believe what makes someone a good runner is that they love what they do. It is not about where anyone finishes; I think the real challenge, and the real beauty that comes from our sport, is when we are able to hold on to that joy of being able to run because we want to, because we love it, and because it makes us a better person. It is easy to slip into complacency and take each run for granted, but what makes someone good is that they recognize and appreciate what a gift each and every run is. That could be a world class athlete who sees the Olympics as an opportunity to enjoy themselves or it could be the person who finishes last in a local parkrun. I love that about our sport! Does that definition make me a good runner? Sometimes? Working on it? ;) Thanks for listening! Ep 11Weekly Strides: Is It Safe to Run during Pregnancy? Should I Start Running in My Third Trimester If I Haven't Been Running up to This Point? - Ep. 11
Is it safe to run during pregnancy? Should I start running in my third trimester if I haven't been running up to this point? I can't answer that question fully for you. And I know you're going to roll your eyes, it's the last answer you want to hear, but I'm going to revert to what you knew I might say, which is ask your doctor about your specific situation. BUT, or AND, to give you my best suggestion on what I would do, I would need to know a few things. Primarily why you have not been running up to this point. If it was something that stopped you running, I would ask you why it's okay now and if it is really worth it at this point when your body has been responding better to something else or at least been getting by with something else. Generally, yes, it is safe to run during pregnancy, and I likely have answers to all your questions about running in pregnancy and during the postpartum period in a few different places. I created an audio series that has interviews with experts that will give you all those answers; you can find that here. I also created a written pregnancy and postpartum guide with everything I have learned since having my two daughters. I asked multiple experts to answer each question I had in this guide, so it is very extensive. You can find that here. I would check those out first, and again, check in with your doctor or healthcare provider to discuss whether it is okay for you. Thanks for listening! Ep 10Weekly Strides: Has the Pandemic Helped You Discover More Benefits to Your Running? - Ep. 10
Has the pandemic helped you discover more benefits to your running? Hmmm. Yes, but for me, I am not sure it is necessarily pandemic-related, but instead just general growth and maturity. That said, without the pandemic, I would likely not have created Together Runs, which yes, have been very popular, but have also been a gift to me to feel more connected to other runners. I love seeing where you are when you're running, those of you who send me your images, and what you look like when you're running. It really makes me feel that I can imagine you there and envision you there. So I feel that even when I'm training alone, I'm surrounded by other people. So that has definitely been an unexpected benefit that I feel the community even more, even though I run on my own almost every day. As for other benefits, mostly what comes to mind is just how much I love being around other runners. More than that, I mean the connection with genuinely good, loving people who make this world better, but just happen to be runners. I love the way running weaves throughout all of our lives and often becomes the analogy for many things, but it's not all of who we are. I'm not sure I would have realized how much those people meant to me without the pandemic. The pandemic also gave me the idea for Running Realized, which went on to be one of the most powerful projects I have worked on. While we are not ready for another season yet (there are a lot of factors making that tough right now), it was truly life changing and helped me see that I could be a part of changing the world for the better, and opening up the eyes of others who genuinely wanted to do better and do something. Finally, the pandemic made all races disappear for a while and at least be different for a while after that, which allowed me to continue down my path of discovering what running really means to me when I'm not competing. So I guess yes, it has benefited my running and yes, I suppose the answer to the original question is a big "yes," when I said in fact it was a "no" at the beginning. If you have a question that you'd like answered, you can email [email protected] and she'll pass it along to Tina! Thanks for listening!
