Ep 388Ian Gonzalez: Community Defender - R4R 388
EIan Gonzalez is a trailblazer. He co-founded 7 on Sundays, a run crew on Chicago's South Side, an area where running as a pastime had been virtually nonexistent. 7 on Sundays created a community of runners, but there was nowhere for them to buy running shoes, clothes, or nutrition. Ian filled that void by opening Last Lap Cornerstore, the only running store on the South Side, and the only Black/Latino-owned running store in the city. He was forced to close the store, but is determined that Last Lap will return to serve the area's runners. For complete show notes and links, visit our website at runningforreal.com/episode388. There isn't a new Running for Real episode this week, and here's the reason why...

Ep 387Vanessa Peralta-Mitchell: Live a Life without Limits - R4R 387
A conversation with her mother and a television documentary changed the trajectory of Vanessa Peralta-Mitchell's life. They led her to take up running; become a Certified Run Coach; and create the Game Changers and L.E.A.D. programs, redefining who is seen as the experts and leaders in the run industry. This year she was honored with Running USA's Award of Excellence, which recognizes "outstanding contributions, initiative, leadership or innovation in the running industry." Vanessa checks all of those boxes. For complete show notes and links, visit our website at runningforreal.com/episode387. Ep 385Vergil Chames: Selma to Montgomery - R4R 385
On March 16, the Selma to Montgomery Relay will follow the route taken by Civil Rights Movement activists in March 1965, as they walked from Selma, Alabama to the state capital of Montgomery, to protest the blocking of Black Americans' right to vote. It's a history lesson, an opportunity to honor those who risked so much for justice, a way to give back to their communities, and a party for the runners, walkers, and cyclists who join together to celebrate the marchers and their actions. Ep 383Lucie Hanes: Your Humanity Can Be a Super Power - R4R 383
Lucie Hanes is a professional ultra runner, a professional climber, a journalist, and a sports psychologist. Those potentially conflicting pursuits actually complement each other, as evidenced by her second place finish in her debut 100 mile race, the 2023 Leadville 100 Trail Run. Remarkably, that achievement came after health issues forced her to stop training the year before. She discovered how much mental health affects athletic performance and now helps other athletes through her mental performance counseling practice, Inside Out Athlete. Ep 380Jason Suarez: Work for Your Own Dreams - R4R 380
Jason Suarez dreamt of going to the Olympics. He ran track in high school and college, but when he went to Tokyo in 2021, it wasn't as a runner, but as a photographer. He shoots for major running brands, has published three collections of running photos and stories, and his handle, @notafraid2fail, is well-known in the running world. But as in demand as he is, Jason still takes time to give back to others. For complete show notes and links, visit our website at runningforreal.com/episode380. Ep 379James Fell: The Sweary Historian - R4R 379
EWilliam Faulkner said, "The past is never dead. It's not even past." As James Fell recounts it, the past is alive, kicking, and throwing f-bombs. Volume I of his self-published, two-volume On This Day in History Sh!t Went Down has just been republished by Bantam Books. Before he became the "Sweary Historian" though, James was a fitness columnist for the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, and authored two books on fitness and motivation. And as befits a fitness writer, he's a long-time runner. For complete show notes and links, visit our website at runningforreal.com/episode379. Ep 378Tim Tollefson on the Road to CIM Series: Celebrating Others Is a Beautiful Thing - R4R 378
From the outside, Tim Tollefson appeared to have everything as a runner. He was a collegiate steeplechase champion, a 2-time US Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier, and is one of the country's most accomplished ultra runners. He podiumed at UTMB in both his 100K and 100 mile debuts, and went on to win the Javelina Jundred, Lavaredo Ultra Trail 120K, and the Ultra Trail Australia 100K. But appearances can be deceiving, and a focus on appearances can be devastating. Tim suffered from body dysmorphia and its accompanying OCD for two decades. As he relates in "What Goes Unsaid," a film project he participated in last year for World Mental Health Day, "I've spent a lifetime hating myself for what I'm not, instead of being thankful for what I am." Now, largely through his involvement with the running community, he's come to appreciate running for the gift that it is. This episode is part of the Road to CIM podcast series, for runners participating in the race next weekend, there's extra advice for you! Ep 377NYC Marathon and the Today Show - R4R 377
Two weeks ago, Kayleigh Williamson became one of the first, and quite possibly the first, women with Down syndrome to complete the New York City Marathon. She crossed the finish line alongside her mother, Sandy, and their friend, Tina Muir, both of whom had been with her for the entire 26.2 miles. Kayleigh's finish went viral, and she, Sandy, and Tina were invited to appear on the "Today Show" with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager. Breaking barriers comes at a cost, however; not only physical and emotional, but financial. Tina has created a GoFundMe fundraiser for Kayleigh and Sandy to help them recoup their expenses to go to the marathon, and maybe give them a little boost going into the holiday season. In this episode, Tina shares the details of the marathon, what it's like to be a guest on a hit TV show, and the rest of a whirlwind day! Ep 376Oren Jay Sofer: Water Your Healthy Seeds - R4R 376
With wars raging in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan; political polarization; the after effects of the COVID 19 pandemic; and the climate crisis, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the state of the world. With his new book, Your Heart Was Made for This: Contemplative Practices to Meet a World in Crisis with Courage, Integrity, and Love, Oren Jay Sofer offers a practical guide to living a meaningful life in a time of great uncertainty and upheaval. "Every day we are practicing something with how we live, how we use our attention, the things we think, say, and do. And if we are intentional about that every day, we can grow stronger, more resilient, more kind, loving, and flexible. It is an incredibly, hopefully empowering message that we can shape our life and position ourselves to be as resilient as possible in the face of so much change and challenge and hardship." In the "Be an Eco-Conscious Traveler" chapter, Tina and Zoë explain how you can develop a pro-environmental lens, consider the benefits of exploring closer to home, look at air travel options for the times that you do want to venture further afield, and offer suggestions that will help you find accommodations and eat in ways that are good for you and for the planet! To make traveling easier, we've created a Sustainable Packing Guide that you can download for free at https://runningforreal.com/runners-sustainable-guides/. Ep 373Sustain Your Runner's Mind and Body - R4R 373
Tina Muir and Zoë Rom's book, "Becoming a Sustainable Runner," takes a three-pronged approach to sustainability. Part one, "Sustain Your Runner's Mind and Body," examines how runners can strengthen their entire being, including ways to increase self-confidence and practice mindfulness, run and cross train to reduce injury, and replenish themselves to keep running strong throughout their life. This week's podcast is a chapter from that section, "Bolster Your Confidence." It's excerpted from the audiobook, which is read by Tina, and examines ways to avoid self-sabotage, learn self-acceptance, practice self-compassion, and ditch comparisons, which are one of the biggest barriers to accepting ourselves. The audiobook of "Becoming a Sustainable Runner" is available on Amazon, Audible and iTunes; the print version is available from all major booksellers and digitally through Amazon. Ep 369James Kilmoon and Jared Lapidus: Office Race - R4R 369
"Office Race" is a running movie for runners, by runners… well, by one runner. It's the first feature written by James Kilmoon and Jared Lapidus, also known as the sketch comedy team Reverse Cowboys, and is Jared's directorial debut. James ran on the NYU cross country team while the two were college roommates, and is still an avid runner. The film has plenty of laughs for non-runners, but a lot of the humor will probably go over their heads. Beneath the slapstick exterior though, there's a genuine love of the sport, and the depiction of the warmth and camaraderie of the running community may very well make them want to get in on the joke. Ep 367Brad Stulberg: We Can't Become Broken People - R4R 367
EIt's a natural human tendency to resist change. In his new book, "Master of Change: How to Excel When Everything is Changing - Including You," Brad Stulberg explores a mindset for change that allows us to not only adapt to change but to thrive. He takes exception to the idea that everything happens for a reason and that practicing gratitude is the way to navigate all forms of adversity. Instead, he suggests establishing core values that remain steadfast and serve as guideposts in adapting to change. Ep 366Malcolm Gladwell Replay - R4R 366
EMalcolm Gladwell is the author of five New York Times bestsellers, host of the Revisionist History and Broken Record podcasts, one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People, and on top of all that, he's an excellent runner. As a matter of fact, he and Tina went on a run together after their conversation. When this episode first aired two years ago, some of the thoughts he shared provoked a lively discussion, so we thought we'd reshare it for our listeners who may have missed it the first time. Thank you to our sponsor, Dri Seats! What do you do when you finish a run or workout, you're hot and sweaty, and you have to get into your car? Put a towel over your seat and try to anchor it under the headrest, only to have it fall down as you're driving? Perch on the very edge of your seat to try to minimize contact with it? Neither of those options keeps your car clean, not to mention that they can be dangerous. Dri Seat waterproof seat covers can be installed and removed in seconds; they have a slip-resistant backing that keeps them in place; and they won't scratch, scuff, stain or discolor your seats (and neither will your sweat!). Ep 365Brian Reynolds: Just Take the First Step - R4R 365
Brian Reynolds' story is a testament to his unyielding spirit. His relentless determination has made him one of the fastest double amputee runners in the world, setting records in distances from the 5K to the marathon. As soon as he's achieved one goal, he's on to the next, which brought him to the Leadville 100 last weekend. His approach to each new challenge is the same. "Everything that I've done in the past ten years has started by just taking one step," he says. "The obstacle looked like a mountain ahead of me, but one step is what brought me to where I am today. So any obstacles in your life can be conquered by just taking the first step." For complete show notes and links, visit our website at runningforreal.com/episode365. Ep 18For Real-Isodes: Sand in Your Shoes? - Ep. 18
Tina and Sarah answer a question from Chip, one of our #Running4Real Superstars on Facebook. Are you a fan of beach running? And if you are, do you wear shoes or go barefoot? Sarah also shares a new healthcare resource for runners, RunCare. All too often, healthcare providers tell runners to stop running when they seek guidance for pain or injury recovery and prevention. In many cases, that's the wrong advice. RunCare can help you find a provider in your area who understands runners and the care that they need. Thanks for listening! Ep 362Lindsey Freeman: Every Day We Make a Choice - R4R 362
Writer and sociologist Lindsey Freeman describes her book, Running, as a feminist and queer handbook of running, but it's a book for all runners. The existing running literature didn't speak to her, so she wrote the book she wanted but could never find, one that celebrates the freedom and opportunity for self-discovery that running offers, while challenging the notion that everyone is "born to run."
