Ep 74I Am - The Resurrection and the Life

As we continue studying Jesus' "I Am" statements in the Gospel of John, we come to the death of Lazarus in chapter 11. Before his passing, Lazarus' sisters Mary and Martha had called to Jesus and asked that he come at once to heal their brother from his sickness. In other words, they had a plan for how this situation could be resolved. But, as is so often the case in both Scripture and our lives today, our plans and God's plans don't always perfectly line up. In this message, Pastor Chan walks us through the passage and explains what Jesus meant when he claimed "I am the resurrection and the life." Ep 72I Am - The Door

READ TOGETHER:John 10:1-10DISCUSS:What does it mean that Jesus is the door (v. 9)? What impact does that truth hold for your life personally?Jesus speaks of a thief and robber who tries to break into the sheep pen. Who was Jesus referring to? How does Jesus protect us from our spiritual enemy, Satan?Jesus says, “His sheep know His voice.” Who or what has the loudest “voice” in your life (i.e. Holy Spirit, news, culture, entertainment, politics, etc.)? What could help you better listen and obey the voice of Jesus? What does it mean that Jesus calls His sheep by name? Why is it important that Jesus knows us personally? What does Jesus mean that, “If anyone enters by me, he will be saved?” Will the door of salvation be opened forever? Why or why not?Describe what you think Jesus means by abundant life? How do you experience abundant life through Jesus Christ?Jesus says He is the door to the sheep pen and the only way to God the Father. How would you respond to someone who says that teaching is too "narrow" or "exclusive"? PRAY:Pray that you would have the faith to walk through the doors the Lord has opened for you, and the wisdom to avoid the ones He has closed.PRACTICE (on your own): Every day we have doors of opportunity set before us. This week choose one of the “doors” below to walk through in faith.Door of Service: Serve someone in need. Signup for the upcoming ServeWeek (July 10-15).Door of Prayer: Lift up those in need through intercession.Door of Encouragement: Reach out to someone who is lonely or hurting.Door of Forgiveness: Seek restoration for broken relationships.Door of Faith: Be willing to go wherever the Lord is leading.Door of Sharing: Share the gospel with someone who doesn’t know Christ.DIVE DEEPER (on your own)Read Proverbs 8:34; Matthew 7:7, 13-14; Colossians 4:3; Revelation 3:8, 20This week, think about how you can experience the abundant life on a deeper level through Christ, the Door. Ep 71I Am - The Light of the World

READ TOGETHER:John 8:12-30DISCUSS:What is it about darkness that frightens people? Are you afraid of the dark? How does the light affect the darkness? What does it mean that Jesus is the light of the world? Jesus declared that He is the light of the world at the Jewish feast of tabernacles. Why did Jesus choose this moment to make this statement, and how does the setting enhance what Jesus says about himself? What is the difference between Jesus being the light and giving the light? Is Jesus really a light to the “whole” world? What does it mean to walk in darkness? Why did the Pharisees try to discredit Jesus’ testimony? Why is Jesus’ testimony credible to you? What two witnesses did Jesus claim testified on His behalf? How is Jesus’ relationship with God an example for our relationship with God?How did the Pharisees respond to Jesus’ words? Why didn’t anyone arrest Jesus? What does this say about God’s will? If Jesus is the light of the world, why do we still sometimes experience darkness in our lives? What can we do about it? How do you feel knowing that God is able to bring light and life to the dark places in your life and world? Is that intimidating or inviting?PRAY:Pray that as you walk in the darkness of this world that you will always long for the light of the presence of Christ.PRACTICE (on your own): Our testimony in Christ is one way we testify to the life-changing power of the Jesus. Work though the tree points below: Life before the Light – Read Proverbs 2:13. Remember and reflect on what your life was like before Christ. Coming to the Light – Read Ephesians 5:8-9. Write a short paragraph describinghow you came to Jesus.Walking in the Light – Read 1 John 1:7– Make a list of the ways that you try to walk in the light of Christ every day.DIVE DEEPER (on your own)Read Matthew 5:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 5:5; 1 John 2:9-11; 2 Corinthians 4:6; Philippians 2:15; Daniel 12;9; Psalm 119:105This week, how can you extend the light of Christ to someone who needs it? Ep 70I Am - The Bread of Life

READ TOGETHER:John 6:22-40DISCUSS:Share about a time when you heard someone make a bold claim about themselves (i.e. political candidate, professional athlete, etc.). What did you think about the person when you heard them make the claim? Were they able to back it up? If so, how did it affect your opinion of the person?Jesus’ bold declaration connects the miracle of the loaves and fish to the significance of His mission. What did Jesus mean when He called Himself the “Bread of Life”?Why do you think Jesus came right out and told the people that He thought they were more interested in bread than in signs? How do people attempt to satisfy their own need to feel secure and significant in life?In what way has Jesus satisfied your hunger and thirst for acceptance and meaning in life? In what ways do you still feel empty? What situations cause you to feel insecure? What can you do today to rely on God, rather than on things or people, to satisfy your needs? What demanding attitudes do you need to ask God to help you change?PRAY:Pray for open eyes that only see Jesus as the One who truly satisfies our spiritual hunger and thirst.PRACTICE (on your own): As imitators of God we should seek ways to become more like Jesus, the Bread of Life. Consider the following suggestions.Consume the Bread of Life – Each time we take Communion, we consume the body and blood of Jesus spiritually.Abide in the Bread of Life – Seek Jesus in prayer and meditate on His Word. The Holy Spirit will enlighten you as you listen for His voice.Point others to the Bread of Life – Do the things that Jesus did. By the power of the Holy Spirit the intent of the Father will come through us and be deposited in others around us. We are agents of Jesus who are carrying on His mission until His returns.DIVE DEEPER (on your own)Read John 6:35; Matthew 26:26; 1 Corinthians 10:17; Ecclesiastes 9:7; John 6:47-50In what ways should the reality of Jesus as the Bread of Life shape my belief and faith? Ep 69The Resurrection

READ TOGETHER:John 20:1-18DISCUSS:What is something you’ve had difficulty believing in the past, but now you believe with all your heart? What made you start believing? Is there anything that would cause you to stop believing again? What piece of evidence do you find most compelling for the resurrection? How has your life changed through belief in the resurrection? How does the resurrection free us from the fear? Why did John reenter the empty tomb after taking a glance earlier? What do you think he realized after observing the empty tomb and the clothes of Jesus? Why do you think Mary did not recognize Jesus at the tomb? When Jesus spoke her name, Mary immediately fell at His feet. Why is it difficult for us to “see” Jesus in the midst of our difficulties? What promises can we remember when life gets tough? How would your daily life change if the resurrection was on the forefront of your mind each day? If the resurrection had never happened, would your life be any different? Explain. How would you respond to a friend who said, “surely you can’t believe that Jesus really rose from the dead?”PRAY:Spend time in prayer asking the Lord to help put the full weight of your belief in the resurrected Christ. Be thankful that He knows and calls you by name.PRACTICE (on your own):Below are some ways to live life in light of the Christ’s resurrection.Thanksgiving: When you wake up, immediately count your blessings. When you grumble and complain, try to counteract that by focusing on the good in your life. Choose to count it all joy because of Jesus’ victory over your sin.Worship: If someone paid off all your debt, how would you feel? Through His death and resurrection, Jesus paid your spiritual debt. Give your worship, adoration, and praise to the One who died in your place and rose again in victory!Eyes on Heaven: As we live our earthly lives, we must also stay focused on the eternal. What is your part in reaching others with the Gospel? Are you following Christ’s example as you serve others?DIVE DEEPER (on your own):Living for Christ in response to the resurrection means that the Holy Spirit must lead all areas of our lives. Below are some helpful Scripture for living in light of the resurrection.John 3:16-17; 1 Corinthians 1:18; 2 Corinthians 3:16-18; 1 Peter 1:3; Ephesians 1:18-20 + 3:16-17; Philippians 3:10-11; John 11:25-26; Hebrews 4:12 +10:19-22; John 8:36 Thanks for listening in to The Ridge's Sunday Audio podcast! Ep 68Palm Sunday

READ TOGETHER:John 12:12-19DISCUSS:When you think of a hero, what image comes to mind?Who did the crowds believe Jesus was? What were they expecting Jesus to do? What expectations do we often place on Jesus? The laying down of a cloak was a sign of submission. The palm branch was a symbol of royalty. What did these two actions say about the people’s expectations of Jesus? The crowd shouted “Hosanna” which is a Hebrew word meaning “save us”. What did the crowd believe they needed saved from? Why did they really need salvation? How did the people ultimately respond to Jesus’ mission? How do you respond when Jesus doesn’t meet your expectations? The crowd recognized Jesus as a prophet from Nazareth. They didn’t fully acknowledge Him as the Son of God. What is the difference between honoring Jesus and recognizing Him as Savior? How do people today honor Jesus, but not recognize Him as Savior?Give an example of a time when God didn’t meet your expectations? How did you react? How was your faith impacted? What did you learn from that experience?PRAY:Spend time in prayer asking the Lord to help your heart grow in right understanding of who Christ truly is.PRACTICE (on your own):Our perspective of Jesus is often determined by our expectations.Identify Your Expectations: Expectations are belief of a certain probability or outcome. Take the time to list the expectations you have placed on Jesus (i.e. “I expect Jesus to always ensure my happiness, safety, comfort, etc.”)Reorder Your Expectations: Our expectations are not always correct because of flaws in our logic. Scripture is the source of truth for who Christ is and how He interacts with His people. Using Scripture, reorder your expectations based on the truth of God’s Word (see verses below).Stand on the Promises: Our faith is the expectation that God will always fulfill His promises. Allow the promises of God found in Scripture to become the framework for having the right expectations of God. DIVE DEEPER (on your own)Our faith and hope motivate the expectations in our lives. Reflect on these verses as you order your expectations of Jesus.Proverbs 3:5-6; 2 Corinthians 1:20; Joshua 21:45; Psalm 77:8; 2 Peter 1:4; Psalm 19:7 Thanks for listening in to The Ridge's Sunday Audio podcast! Ep 67The Raising of Lazarus

READ TOGETHER:John 11:1-44DISCUSS:Today’s teaching focused on different responses to different prayers. Share a few a times when God has answered you prayers.Share a few times God did not, or has not yet, answered one of your prayers. If you're comfortable, share how that has shaped your spiritual journey. How did today's teaching affect your understanding of God works in the midst of our pain?Of the different reactions to the raising of Lazarus, which one do you identify with the most?If God performed miracle (miracles in the sense that God is temporarily reversing the laws of nature) all the time, would that change the way we as a society think about the concept of "miracles"?PRAY:Pray that we would grow closer to God and one another through trials, difficulties, and pain as we strive to be a community following Christ.PRACTICE (on your own):Gratitude: Take some time this week to list 5 to 10 things that you are grateful for. Spend a few minutes each morning in thankful prayer to God for these things. Gratitude indexes our heart towards what is right in the world, and away from our propensity to focus on the negative.Solitude: Find one time this week you can spend a few minutes completely alone and away from digital distractions. Allow yourself to come to a stop and spend some time in prayer and listening for the Holy Spirit. Solitude allows us to hear tings that we sometimes can't in the hustle and bustle of life.Prayer for healing and those suffering: Write down 1 to 3 people who are seeking healing or who you know are suffering from either pain or the result of evil in the world.DIVE DEEPER (on your own):As followers of Christ, Jesus promised we would see and also suffer from evil in this world. Take time to write down and meditate on what happens in your inmost being and thoughts when you encounter pain and suffering.Further reading: Romans 8, John 16:33, 2 Corinthians 4, Revelation 21-22, Romans 12:19-21. In this special episode taken from the Defined Men's Conference at The Ridge, Pastor David Haight introduces us to the idea of "apprenticing" under Jesus and expounds upon the radically different "way" of living that is only offered in Christ. Ep 63Healing the Blind Man

READ TOGETHER:John 9:1-39DISCUSS:How do our sins affect us physically or emotionally? How do our sins affect others? Why had the man in John 9:1 been born blind? What limitations has God used in your life for His glory? Why did Jesus send the blind man to the Pool of Siloam? Why would that have been a difficult journey for the blind man? Discuss why gaining “spiritual sight” can sometimes be a long, difficult journey? On the surface, this is a story about Jesus healing a man’s physical blindness, but Jesus uses the physical healing to address spiritual blindness. What are some of the signs from the story that demonstrate that the Pharisees were spiritually blind? From what “blindness” has God healed you?The Pharisees initially want to know exactly what Jesus did to heal the blind man. Once the blind man identified Jesus as “a prophet,” how did their line of questioning change? As the story unfolds, how do the man’s references to Jesus indicate that his faith is growing? What does this statement from Jesus mean in verse 39 - “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.”PRAY:Pray that God will be glorified through the weaknesses and limitations in your life.PRACTICE (on your own):Our weakness should lead us the Light of the World.Identify Weaknesses: In many cases, those who are well and healthy are the ones who don’t see the need for God. Identify the weaknesses or limitations that you may have.Dedicate Your Weaknesses to God: Our weaknesses are more likely to lead us to acknowledge our need for God. Dedicate your weaknesses to God that He may be glorified through all things.Praise God for Healing: God will heal us according to His purpose. God did not promise us a life free of worries and troubles. But He did promise that we would be healed either in the life or in eternity yet to come. Praise Him!DIVE DEEPER (on your own):As followers of Christ, we see with “spiritual” eyes. We walk by faith, not by sight.Additional Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 5:7; Hebrews 11:6; Proverbs 3:5-6; Romans 10:17; Hebrews 11:1; Romans 1:17; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Thanks for listening in to The Ridge's Sunday Audio podcast! Ep 62Walking on Water

READ TOGETHER:John 6:16-24DISCUSS:How do you respond to difficultly and hardships? What do you do when the storms of life come upon you? What are some tests of faith and thinking you have faced? How have these experiences helped you grow in the faith? How did the disciples react when they sawJesus walking on water? If real faith is shown when the storms come, how should that affect our fear?In John 6:20 Jesus says, “It is I, do not be afraid.” In the original language the phrase is “ego eimi” or “I Am.” What comfort, encouragement, and hope isthere in knowing “I Am” is with you in the storm? and has power over the storm? What miraculous event took place once Jesus entered the boat? How has Jesus calmed the storm for you in the past? From what do you think you need God to rescue you today? Our confidence is in Christ and not in situations. So, what can you do to encourage others in your life and church to not be afraid, but to put one's confidence and trust in the Lord?PRAY:Pray that you will depend on God the next time a threatening situation confronts you?Pray for The Ridge and our community for increased trust and belief in God, especially in times of trials and testing.PRACTICE (on your own):Below are two examples of how men from the Bible have approached storms and how we can learn from them:Disobey God’s Will: Example - Jonah. When we disobey the will of God, we move ourselves outside the will of God and into a storm. Repentance brings us back into peace with God.Obey God’s Will: Example – Moses. After delivering God’s people from the Egypt, Moses met one challenge after another. When we obey God, there will always be blessings and reward, but it doesn't mean there won’t be storms and challenges along the way.Recognize God: Recognizing the power and presence of God in the middle of the storm is the key that brings peace to our hearts.DIVE DEEPER:Going through a storm? Study the following verses to find peace in the midst of the storm: Philippians 4:6-7; Isaiah 43:2; Matthew 8:24-27; Isaiah 26:3; Job 37:5-7, 13; John 14:27; Isaiah 41:10; Psalm 34:4; 1 Peter 5:7 Thanks for listening in to The Ridge's Sunday Audio podcast! Ep 61Feeding the 5000

READ:John 6:5-14DISCUSS:Describe a difficult situation you’ve been in that caused you to doubt God’s ability to provide a positive outcome. How did God work your situation for good?At this point in Jesus’ ministry, why were so many people beginning to follow Him? For what reasons do people follow Jesus today? What makes you want to follow Jesus? Why do think Jesus asked Philip a question to test him? Do you think God tests our faith today? If so, give an example. What role did Andrew play in feeding the 5000+ people present? What is your typical reaction to situations that seem to present no readily available solution? With what situations in life do you have a difficult time trusting God?How did Jesus provide the need for 5000+ people? Give examples of how God provides for us on a daily basis? How much bread was left over? What was the significance of the leftovers? How did the crowd of people respond to Jesus’ miracle? How do you react when God supplies your needs?PRAY:Pray that you have the faith to know that God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.Pray for The Ridge and our community for increased trust and belief in the provision and power of Jesus.PRACTICE (on your own):Trust deeper: how has Jesus met your needs in the past? How can you trust Him even more in the future?Give thanks: What can you do to make sure that you never take God's provision for granted or waste it? Identify the gifts and blessings God has given you. Spend some time in prayer thanking Him for providing for your every need.DIVE DEEPER (on your own):The story of God's faithfulness is all throughout the Word. His faithfulness goes beyond simply providing for His people; He gives in abundance.Read John 1:3; Colossians 1:17; Matthew 6:25-27; 1 Corinthians 1:27; Zechariah 4:6; Psalm 23:5. Ep 60Healing of the Lame Man

READ TOGETHER:John 5:1-15DISCUSS:Who are some of the hardest types of people for you to love, reach out to, and care for? Why?Why did Jesus ask the man if he wanted to be healed? Do you think the man wanted to be healed? Did this man's healing depend on any effort or desire on his part? Why did the Jewish religious leaders (Pharisees) scold the man for carrying his mat on the Sabbath? Did the man actually break the Sabbath law? Whose law had the man really broken? For what possible reasons did Jesus tell the man to carry his mat? How was the negative reaction from the Pharisees the beginning of the movement that would end with Jesus' death on the cross?Discuss how this passage is a picture of the Gospel. How does this passage encourage you to declare and demonstrate the gospel in your community and spheres of influence?PRAY:Pray that you show someone the practical love of Jesus.Pray for The Ridge and our community for increased trust and belief in the transforming power of Christ.PRACTICE (on your own):Below are some practical ways to move toward a stronger faith.Have confidence that Jesus can heal both physically and spiritually.Show compassion by identifying ways you can minister to others who are lost and suffering.DIVE DEEPER (on your own):Why did Jesus care for the lame man's physical need before his spiritual need?Read Matthew 25:40-45, James 1:26-27, Zechariah 7:8-14, and Psalm 146:5-10. Ep 59Healing of the Official's Son

READ TOGETHER:John 4:46-54DISCUSS:How would you describe faith? Is faith a journey, a moment, a destination? What is the relationship between belief and faith? What have been some important markers in your faith? Why do you think the official came to Jesus seeking healing for his son? Why do we sometimes pray already having in mind how the prayer needs to be answered? How does this passage present a tension between seeing (miracles and signs) and believing (what Jesus says)? What do you think we can learn about how the two are related, and which is most important? How did Jesus both deny and answer the official’s prayer? How do you respond if your prayer is answered differently than you expected? What does it say about the official that he took Jesus at His Word? How does this challenge the idea that seeing is believing? When have you had to take Jesus at His Word and how did this grow your faith? Is there a difference between believing in what Jesus can do versus believing in who Jesus is? The official came with His own belief but left with much more. What does this mean to you and why? What are some vital steps you can take to deepen your faith and where are you in your faith journey?PRAY:Pray that you will cultivate the kind of faith that allows you to trust Jesus before you see Him work?Pray for The Ridge and our community for increased trust and belief in the transforming power of Christ.PRACTICE (on your own):Below are some practical ways to move toward a stronger faith.Remember God’s Faithfulness - remember how the Lord moved on your behalf before, and believe He'll do it again.Reflect on God’s Promises – reflecting on God's promises remind us that we can always count on Him.Ask the Lord Jesus to Increase Your Faith - ask the Lord to increase your faith to the measure needed to fulfill His will.DIVE DEEPER (on your own)Read Hebrews 12:2; Matthew 6:31-33, Proverbs 3;5-6, Matthew 7:9-11, 2 Corinthians 9:8; Psalm 34:10; Romans 8:32How can you cultivate the kind of faith that allows you to trust Jesus before you see Him work? Ep 58Water to Wine

READ TOGETHER:John 2:1-11DISCUSS:• Why do you think John chose to record the miracle of Jesus turning water into wine? What does this miracle reveal about Jesus Christ?• What enabled Jesus to transform inorganic, non-living water into an organic substance? What enables Jesus to transform sinners into saints?• In his book, “Miracles,” C. S. Lewis points out that, “every miracle of Jesus is simply a kind of short-circuiting of a natural process; a doing instantly of something which in general takes a longer period of time.” Discuss what you think that statement means?• Jesus is the Bridegroom and we are the Bride. Discuss the significance of that imagery. What does it communicate to you as a part of the Body of Christ?• Jesus' mother told the servants, "Whatever He (Jesus) says to you, do it." (John 2:5) What does this reveal about Jesus' relationship with His mother? What did Jesus mean when He said, “His time has not yet come.”• The disciples saw the glory of Jesus and believed in him. How do you see the glory of Jesus on display in the world today? How do you see the glory on display in/through you?• Jesus changes what’s lifeless into something full of life. In what ways have you “lifeless” (past or present)? How can Jesus provide ultimate fulfillment for you in these areas?PRAY:Pray that the power and glory of Jesus will be reveal in and through one another. Pray for The Ridge and our community for increased faith and belief in the transforming power of Christ.PRACTICE (on your own):One of the great ways God reveals His glory and power is through His people. Here are three ways to bring glory to God.1. Glorify God by Our Faith - to give glory to God is to believe God is Who the Bible says He is, and to rely upon His power and faithfulness.2. Glorify God by Our Worship - We can glorify God in many ways, but Scripture indicates that nothing we do delights God more than calling on His name with sincere hearts and declaring that all glory belongs to Him.3. Glorify God in All We Do - As we believe in Christ to the glory of God and declare His glory in our worship, grateful obedience will flow from our lives.DIVE DEEPER (on your own)Read John 1:14, John, 11:40, John 17:4-5, Hebrews 1:3,1 Corinthians 10:3, Psalm 8:1, Philippians 2:11In what ways should the power and glory of Jesus shape my belief and faith? MAIN IDEA:John explains that his gospel was written in order to help believers, maybe young believers, understand the truth about Christ, and safeguard them from false beliefs and distortions.READ TOGETHER:John 20:30-31DISCUSS:• C.S. Lewis said, You never know how much you really believe anything until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life and death to you. Share a time in your faith when struggled with belief.• According to these 2 verses, what are the major themes of John’s Gospel? How does this inform how you will read and study John’s Gospel?• What are the biggest intellectual objections you and/or other people have with believing the identity and work of Jesus? How do these verses (and other passages) answer respond to those objections?• What are some common misunderstandings of Jesus that you have encountered or have held yourself? Compare and contrast them with John’s understanding of Jesus here.• What do you hope to learn as you walk through the seven signs found in the Gospel of John? What do you long for God to do in and through you as you study these signs?• John’s purpose is missional. Who in your life needs to believe in Jesus and find life in his name? Write a name or names down and begin praying for them?PRAY:Pray for one another that your belief in Christ will be an “ongoing” type of belief, growing stronger and stronger over time. Pray for The Ridge and our community for increased faith and belief in Jesus as the Christ.PRACTICE (on your own):Here’s a list to maybe get you started but your next step is including, but not limited to, the following. We believe something when we act as if it were true.” What are some teachings of Jesus that feel most difficult to believe lead to the “good” life?• What is something you can ask your community to help you process when it comes to faith?• If you could imagine what one step forward in faithfulness would be for you, what it would be?• Christian Author and Professor, Karen Swallow Prior once said: ““A faith that never feels challenged is most likely dead”.” - Share a time your faith has been challenged, and how it was overcome.PRAY:Pray for each request in your group who requested support in processing. Ep 40Families 4 Families Interview

READ:James 1:27, Psalm 68:5-6, Deuteronomy 10:18, Psalm 146:9, Isaiah 1:17, Romans 8:15Ephesians 1:4-5, Proverbs 31:8, Matthew 25:40- In your opinion, what are the “fruits” or “evidences” of authentic Christian faith?- What does James mean by religion that is “pure and faultless”? How does this relate to caring for the poor and needy? How do the passages listed above characterize God in regard to caring for the helpless?- Why do you think James chose to use widows and orphans to illustrate this identifying mark of authentic Christianity? Why were these two groups most often marginalized in Jesus’ day?- What are some reasons that we might ignore or refuse to act with care toward the helpless? What are some ways that God Himself acts to provide care for the helpless? Explain the concept of spiritual adoption into the Family of God. Why is adoption such a fitting metaphor for caring for orphans?- Does the notion of helping widows and orphans belong only in the 1st century or does ministry to such segments of society still demonstrate pure and undefiled religion?- What are some other general examples of how the church can care for the helpless in our society? What are some specific examples of how YOU can care for the helpless in your day-to- day life?DISCUSS:- Why do you think we have such a crisis of displaced children in our nation today? Do you agree that the Church is the answer to the foster care crisis? Why or why not?- According to the Families 4 Families strategy, what are the ways an individual/family can get involved in foster care? What is the primary goal of Families 4 Families? (to reunite children with their family) Why is this such an important goal?- What will be your part in helping support children and families involved in the foster care system?PRAY:- Over the next two weeks, pray about how you will support children and families involved in foster care. Ep 39Authentic Leadership

READ:1 Thessalonians 2:1-12  Hebrews 11:32-38  Hebrews 4:13  Acts 16:22; 17:2- Describe a spiritual leader you know who is characterized by authenticity? What are some examples of impure motives in Christian ministry?- How did Paul challenge the Thessalonians to examine the integrity of his life? What did they discover?- How did Paul reflect authenticity among the Thessalonians? How did Paul’s critics seek to discredit his message? Why was Paul not worried about being discredited?- What are the dangers of a minister whose priority is to please people rather than God?- In the first 6 verses Paul centers everything around the fact that they worship God and God alone. This is what shaped them and that is why when put to the test they passed. Do you feel like God is the one who is shaping your leadership and influence, or is something/someone else shaping it?- What does it mean when Paul says that God “examines” our hearts? How is it liberating to know that God knows everything about our lives?- In verses 7-12 Paul uses the analogy of a mother and father. What are the characteristics of a good mother and father? How do those characteristics play into caring for people in the right way? Have you ever experienced this with people in a Christian ministry?- What are some good practices that pastors and church leaders should put into place to ensure they are leading and shepherding with authenticity?DISCUSS:- Why do many people view Christians as phone or fake? Why do you think so many well-known spiritual leaders have fallen morally in recent days?- Do people in your church or small group see you as a leader who exudes authentic leadership? Why or why not? What can you do to be more authentic and transparent in your leadership?- How should we deal with an internal motivation to please people more than God?PRAY:Pray for grace and courage to be authentic as you fulfill God’s calling for your life.RESPOND:On a scale of 1 to 5 rate your leadership in these five areas:1.)
