Exhaust #198: Stew, Reed, Eli, Jett, Hunter & More

The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross season finale brought out arguably the best one-hour guest list in the history of the sport. The Friday night Staging Area show featured James Stewart as a guest host alongside Jason Weigandt and Jason Thomas, and then Eli Tomac showed he felt no pressure for the final race by stopping by for a chat. James was impressed Eli even came over! Then Scouting Moto Combine winner Noah Viney came by with his coach for the day, Chad Reed, which meant Chad and James were on the show together! As if that's not enough, Hunter and Jett Lawrence came by to close the show. Stew and the Lawrences catch the fever! Oh, and then there was the matter of the actual race, which was won by Tomac, who claimed his fourth 450 MX title in dramatic winner-take-all fashion. Weigandt drops in a post-race interview with Eli here to get the once-again champion's take on the day. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, and AOMC.

Exhaust #197: Last Showdown (w/ Jeff Emig)

Jason Weigandt calls Jeff Emig in this podcast to get the emotion behind final-round showdowns. Fro came out on top the last time the AMA National Championship in the premier class was this close at the finale. In 1996, Emig held a two-point lead on Jeremy McGrath coming into the final round of the AMA National Motocross Championship, meaning a 1-1 score for either rider would decide the title. It has taken over 25 years to get this scenario again, as Eli Tomac and Chase Sexton are now separated by just one point, so winning both motos guarantees the title. In '96, Emig came through with the 1-1 at Steel City to win the title. Jason Weigandt called Emig this week to hear the story of living the most important week of your life—and you'll get even more pumped up when you hear Emig riff on the focus, the emotion, and the determination needed to win in this environment. In fact, Emig says this type of pressure is the thing he misses most about racing. Weigandt also drops in press conference quotes from Sexton and Tomac, to detect if they're thinking the same way Emig did back then. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, and AOMC.

The Racer X MXGP Review Show: Grand Prix of Charente Maritime

Here is the latest dose of news and perspective from the world championship with plenty of discussion (and some gossip to boot) from journalists Adam Wheeler and Lewis Phillips. Exhaust #196: Finally Working Together (w/ Roger De Coster & Bruce Stjernstrom)

News broke a few weeks ago of the new level of cooperation between Feld Motorsports (producers of Monster Energy Supercross) and MX Sports Pro Racing (producers of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross) and the resulting SuperMotocross World Championship, a set of three races that will run at the end of next season. The whole plan is to bring both series—and these three new races at the end of the year—under one arrangement for a TV/media deal, marketing, and more, plus better collaboration on rulebooks, drug testing, scheduling, and more. They will both crown their existing champions, then add this new title at the end of the season as well. You could listen to officials from Feld Motorsports and MX Sports tell you how awesome this will be, but of course they think it's great. Jason Weigandt talked to two of the most unfiltered voices in the sport, KTM Groups North American Director of Motorsports Roger De Coster and Kawasaki Racing's Bruce Stjernstrom, to get their take. What you'll learn is this is about much more than a three-race playoff. This is the industry working together for the first time. Growth, hopefully, can follow. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, and AOMC.

Exhaust #195: The Deegan Deal

Check out our Insight Story posted on Wednesday for an attempt to wrap up the hours and hours of interviews with folks involved in Brennan Schofield's attempt to claim (purchase) Haiden Deegan's bike at Loretta's, which is legal under AMA amateur rules. If you'd rather have an audio version, Jason Weigandt tries to wrap it all up here in this latest Exhaust Podcast. What happened and when? Some of the info is now out there, although for certain few will ever believe we have the true story of who is to blame and why Schofield didn't end up getting a bike that was rightfully his. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, AOMC, and Leatt.

Exhaust #193: Da Rippahs (w/ Henry, Dowd & Decotis)

On Friday before the Southwick National, New England fan favorites Doug Henry, John Dowd, and Jimmy Decotis stopped by the Monster Energy Stage to share some memories and talk about what they're doing today. For Dowd and Henry, the story is simple: the legends are now part of the Southwick track crew! Jimmy D, meanwhile, stepped away from racing two years ago and had been quiet since, but now he's back on the bike and working with young riders in the area. He's also planning to race Southwick for fun next year! The real kicker? The humble stories of Dowd and Henry. Did you know Doug came to Southwick as a fan, just watching on the fence, and then six years later he was the 125 National Motocross Champion? That's crazy, but for Doug Henry, it's normal. Enjoy the show. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, and AOMC.

Exhaust #191: Tony Cairoli's American Adventure

Nine-time World Champion Tony Cairoli is trying to mix business with pleasure this summer, checking Lucas Oil Pro Motocross off of his racing bucket list while also slipping into retirement. He's not training as hard as he did in his prime days, but he's still a racer with pride, and he still wants to do well. It's a tricky balance, but Tony seems to be enjoying it all either way. Exhaust #187: American Road Racing Tries a Comeback (w/ Rob Buydos)

Jason Weigandt riffs on lessons learned from American road racing for motorcycles and how that can apply to motocross and supercross. Weigandt has been getting deeper inside the road racing scene in both MotoAmerica and MotoGP, and the story of rises, falls, and rises is both intriguing and carries some parallels. Part of the comeback story in the U.S. is the attempt to find other, more popular street bikes and take them to the racetrack, because sales of traditional sport bikes have dropped way, way off from 20 years ago. To that end, two racing series—MotoAmerica's King of the Baggers and Rob Buydos' Bagger Racing League—try to stoke the flames by getting the American V-Twin crowd (Harley people) onto the track. In the meantime, Dorna's MotoGP Series is pushing MotoAmerica hard to create more U.S. talent, and some of those riders are starting to make their way to Europe now. Weigandt takes you through the ins and outs and then talks to Buydos for more on the Bagger Racing League. Exhaust #186: Adventure Bikes Can Change Your Life (w/Simon Cudby)

Jason Weigandt talks to longtime and all-time motocross photographer and video man Simon Cudby about his new life chasing trails on adventure bikes. Cudby spent 20 years in the trenches shooting photos at the races, but when all that travel caught up to him, he had to find a new way to stay in the motorcycle world. The answer was adventure bikes, which is his new focus via his OffRoadUnderground.com website. Exhaust #185: The Past and the Future (with Chad Reed)

Following Chad Reed's return to Monster Energy AMA Supercross—well, his return to opening ceremonies, at least—Jason Weigandt rang up the legend to chat about getting his championship-replica 2004 YZ250 two-stroke ready for the track in St. Louis. Turns out to be a much more complicated story than you'd imagine, from early-morning scrambles to put parts in bags to the throttle sticking on a jump and nearly ending everything badly. Enjoy Chad's tale of retro two-stroke madness, and then focus on the future. Chad and Ellie Reed were really in St. Louis so their son Pace could participate in the KTM Jr. Supercross Challenge. How are the Reeds navigating the world of amateur minicycle racing? What about the pressure that comes with the name Reed on the jersey? And starting a YouTube channel? Exhaust #183: Adam Cianciarulo is Not Down in the Dumps

"My life is not rough!" is the main thing Adam Cianciarulo wants people to take away from this podcast. Yes, he's out injured again, and his ACL recovery might cost him all of 2022, but he's well aware that being a professional dirt bike racer is still amazing, and he's not in a dark place. The injuries used to weigh on him like that, though. It used to make him feel bitter toward the sport. He has now learned not to define himself by his results.
