Exhaust #281: Where Riders Actually Gain Time (LitPro Data Science Explains)

Jason Weigandt is joined by Arich Knaub and Richard Zinn to learn where riders gain and lose time on a supercross track. Even if all the top riders jump the same jumps, there's still much to gained. Chase Sexton made up .8 seconds on Ken Roczen at Glendale with the exact same jump sequence! Jett Lawrence was a tenth faster than Sexton in a corner at Anaheim 2. LitPro is a GPS tracking device you can mount on your bike, and the company's App and social media has been breaking down small sections to figure out where the stars make time. Weege chats up the data science guys to get more detail. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, OnTrack School and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #274: Monster Energy Supercross Preview Show

Jason Weigandt, Jason Thomas and Steve Matthes have been previewing the Monster Energy Supercross season for a dozen-plus years now, and the show returns for 2025 with Monster Energy, Maxima, Fly Racing and Motosport.com on board. This is the audio version of the five-part video series. This year's arguments include: If Eli Tomac is better now than he was early in 2024 and is that good enough now to challenge and beat Jett Lawrence? Are Chase Sexton's bike issues fixed? Will Jett Lawrence embracing the haters impact his results long term or short term? Is Hunter Lawrence part of the elite group that can win 450SX races on any night? Did we diss out Ken Roczen by leaving him until show 3? Everyone agrees that Cooper Webb will be a contender, now and forever, but there are many, many more arguments to have, now and forever. Enjoy the full kit right here in podcast format. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X brand.

Exhaust #273: Kyle Peters' Record Bid Ends

Kyle Peters has been almost there in AMA Supercross his entire career. There might be no rider with more seventh-place 250SX finishes than Kyle, who was is good but couldn't quite get over the hump to net race win or title bid. Then he found a new home in AMA Arenacross and hasn't stopped winning, with five-straight championships pulling him even with Buddy Antunez and the all-time mark in the series. His bid for a record sixth-straight, though, has ended due to a neck injury. Jason Weigandt Kyle to ask about his status going forward from here. Hint: he works a real job in the summer and dirt bikes are way better! The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura.

The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #271: What Happened to KTM?

Since the second quarter of 2024, the industry has been filled with rumors of Pierer Mobility, the parent company of the KTM, Husqvarna, and GasGas brands, running into slowing sales, an overstock of product and ultimately major financial troubles. The strong boost in powersports, bicycle, and overall outdoor recreation sales seen after the pandemic have slowed, and aggressive sales targets have suddenly become difficult to meet. While none of those dealings behind the scenes had yet impacted what the consumer sees with products—the brands continue to innovate with quite a few new machines for 2025—or on the race track, it's becoming more and more clear the company will need major changes to continue into the future. Jason Weigandt explains the "never waste a good crisis" mode the company was in after the pandemic, the boom that followed, and the struggle today that led the company to declare itself insolvent in Europe. It won't impact racing or motorcycle availability here in America, yet, at least beyond the cuts that were already put into motion over the last few weeks and months. But these are tough roads ahead. Is it a sign of bigger trouble in the industry, or is this just a KTM-specific issue? The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #270: Jorge Prado On Monster Energy Kawasaki Deal

A nail-biting quest for the 2024 MXGP World Championship was only part of Jorge Prado's whirlwind year, as he was also shopping for a ride in America with plans to race full-time SMX in 2025. After racing the first four rounds of Monster Energy Supercross in '24, he actually signed with Monster Energy Kawasaki before he headed back to Europe to pursue another MXGP crown. After that the full focus went to motocross back home, until now, when he can finally reveal his plans for 2025 and beyond. Jason Weigandt caught up with Prado to learn about what it took to get here, and what he hopes to accomplish. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #269: Arenacross Tries Electric

"All of your guys were around when four-strokes came out," said the AMA's Mike Burkeen in Thursday night's AMA Arenacross press conference. "The rules were made and it turns out they weren't very good. They basically killed off the two-strokes. Once it happened we couldn't put the genie back in the bottle. With the electric bikes we didn't want to go full-bore and then just cut it off if we find out it doesn't work. Because everyone has made purchasing decisions already, then we'll have all these guys that they bought under what they would say were bad pretenses. So we want to walk before we run, but we definitely want to run. What that looks like? Nobody knows?" Arenacross can serve as the testing ground to see where electric could fit, so a new stand-alone class for Stark Varg electric bikes has will fit into the Arenacross structure for 2024-2025. Have a listen to last night's press conference as the series explains the new class, and hear from riders like Josh Hill and Justin Bogle. Don't worry, the traditional AMA Arenacross class for 250s and 450s remains, with Kyle Peters trying to hold off riders like Ryan Breece and Vince Friese to notch a record sixth-straight championship. But in the Dash for Cash, it will be electric versus combustion! All the stars are here to talk about their prospects before tonight's season opener in Reno, Nevada. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #268: Jordon Smith is Here to Stay

Few remember that in 2019, when Austin Forkner was ascending in the sport and threatening a perfect season in 250SX East Region, that Jordon Smith was actually the closest rider to him. Forkner's eventual ACL injury and a title for a young Chase Sexton later become the story. By then, Smith had hurt his wrist, and struggled for years to solve that injury. In fact, he thought his career might be over. After missing major chunks of racing over the next few seasons, including two frustrating seasons with Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki, he took the pressure off during a brief run with Firepower Honda. Then Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing called, and Jordon's career rebuild was really taking shape. Now he's got a new deal with Triumph that could stretch to three years and the 450 Class. Jason Weigandt rings him up for this podcast. The Racer X Exhaust is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #267: Silly Season and Scuba Steve from Triumph

New team deals are getting announced later than ever, as we still await Monster Energy Kawasaki announcing its new deal with Jorge Prado for the 450 class in 2025. But Triumph just announced its 2025 team, featuring Austin Forkner, Stilez Robertson, Jordon Smith and the returning Jalek Swoll. We also have seen Pierce Brown on his new Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing machine, and know that Star is signing new amateur talent like Caden Dudney. Plus GasGas moves away from Troy Lee Designs and into the same program as Rockstar Husqvarna, including Rockstar sponsorship. Jason Weigandt talks about all of these moves, and then talks to Triumph U.S. Team Manager "Scuba" Steve Westfall to hear how Year 1 went for the new brand. Scuba doesn't hold back! The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X brand.

Exhaust #266: What Happened to Max Vohland?

Maximus Vohland is a second-generation rider, the son of former AMA National and Supercross winner Tallon Vohland. That would make it seem like his path to the pros has been easy, but you'll find that is absolutely not the case. Jason Weigandt catches up with Max, who is just getting back on the bike after a hip injury ruined his 2024 season. The injury left Max with extreme nerve pain, and fighting to fight off the potential of getting addicted to pain medication. That's not all. In this podcast Max will explain how his plan to race EMX in Europe as an amateur that washed away with COVID. He'll also talk about his sister's traumatic brain injury suffered while riding a horse, and how her own comeback trail has inspired him to keep fighting. Max's goal? Get to the podium, make some money and buy his sister a horse! The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura. Exhaust #265: Latest MXoN Wrap Up Ever

The 2024 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations was an awesome event, but even the incredible emotional highs of that day have begun to fade nearly two weeks later. But Jason Weigandt isn't done talking about it -- or talking about anything, ever -- so now that he's home he logs this wrap up for the MXoN weekend. From the team and race results, to the atmopshere of the race, to the MXGP team set ups and even some cultural observations, Weege wraps up an unforgettable event that pretty much marked the 100th year of motorcycle scrambles racing in England. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #264: Weigandt's Motocross of Nations Preview

E

We all know the trials and tribulations of Team USA for this year's Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, but what other teams are worth a look? Jason Weigandt runs down the rosters and breaks the event down to its strongest squads. Things are looking good for teams like France, Australia, and the Netherlands, plus Spain and the USA, but what will it take to win? Can the home country make some noise? Will Tim Gajser's squad get in and set up an all-time final moto with one of the most stacked starting gates ever seen at a motocross race? So much on the line. Here's what you need to know. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #261: Chase Sexton

Jason Weigandt gets in on a KTM press conference with Chase Sexton, Ian Harrison and Pit Beirer to talk about the 2024 Pro Motocross Championship and big questions like what the summer could have been like if Jett Lawrence and Eli Tomac had competed, the prospect of racing Jorge Prado in 2025, and why he's so strong late in the season and late in the motos. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and presented by Yoshimura, On Track School, and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #260: New Development Process (With Team Green's Ryan Holliday)

Kawasaki Team Green had a renaissance week at this year's Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn's, sweeping through four of the most coveted titles there: 250 and Open Pro Sport with Drew Adams, and 250B and Schoolboy 2 with Caden Dudney. Team Manager Ryan Holliday, though, can only chalk that up to good racing luck, because things haven't rolled the team's way like this in a long time. The team isn't alone in trying to change up the way it develops and evaluates riders, though, as Adams raced a bunch this year including competing in Canada to try to get in more gate drops. Holliday would like his riders to race more so they can learn more. This weekend's Scouting Moto Combine is a part of that. Jason Weigandt checks in to hear how the amateur game is changing. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and On Track School, plus Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #259: Ducati GM Paolo Ciabatti

Ducati's announcement that it was entering the off-road space was big enough news, but moving Paolo Ciabatti, who headed up the fantastically successful MotoGP effort, over to head the new motocross program was just as important to insiders. This is proof of how serious Ducati is about success on the dirt, and the brand takes a big step this weekend when Antonio Cairoli (!) returns to MXGP on the Ducati 450. Ciabatti was busy in another series last weekend, though, as he stopped by Unadilla to take in Pro Motocross. Jason Weigandt and Jason Thomas were able to get a few minutes with him for the Big Interview on the SMX Insider show. This podcast is an extended, full-length version of the shorter interview that ran in the show. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and presented by Yoshimura, On Track School, and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #258: Chance Hymas

On the Friday before the Spring Creek National in Millville, Minnesota, Jason Weigandt talked to Chance Hymas over at the Honda HRC truck to find out more about his path to the pros. Hymas didn't win all the time when he was younger, but once he got on big bikes he started to roll, and eventually Honda came calling. It wasn't perfect, though, as a rough patch during the 2022 Scouting Moto Combine and the 2022 Monster Energy AMA Amateur National at Loretta Lynn's certainly didn't feel good. But Chance is used to working his way up, and he's done it again as a pro after capturing his first career moto and overall victories this summer. How far can he go now? By the way, we recorded this interview before the Hymas/Haiden Deegan incident in turn one of the Spring Creek National the very next day. Hymas hurt his ankle but hopes to be back for Washougal this weekend. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and presented by Yoshimura, On Track School and and Racer X Brand.

He also talks about today's racing, including Jett and Hunter Lawrence, Chase Sexton, Haiden Deegan, Levi Kitchen, and more. Weigandt also starts the show with a rant about fitness in the sport. It's not all about fitness, actually! The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, On Track School, and Racer X Brand.

The great outdoors are here with the 2024 AMA Pro Motocross Championship, and Jason Weigandt, Jason Thomas and Steve Matthes argue and debate the hot topics from both classes in our annual Pro Motocross preview shows. We've clipped the audio from our videos to present these shows in podcast form. So listen in your car, while you're mowing the lawn, or while you're working out. You know JT would need this during one of his three workouts each day. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is brought to you by Yoshimura, On Track School, and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #255: Nathan Ramsey

Nate Ramsey, one of the all-time winningest 125/250F supercross racers, has carved out a great post-racing career, now as team manager of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna. Jason Weigandt rang up Nate Dogg to get the inside story on RJ Hamsphire's 250SX West Region title, and how stressful the day felt at Salt Lake City, as well as Hampshire's race strategy. Did you know finishing second in the heat race was actually an advantage? They also talk about old bikes, and how the 2022 new-generation platform that Hampshire vocally criticized has now morphed into a great race bike. Could Zach Osborne's 2017-2018 250F Championship bikes compete? What about Nate's old (legendary) Honda CRF450R? Yeah, bikes have come a long way. Weigandt chats with Ramsey about it all. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, OnTrack School and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #254: The Ex Team Manager, Part 2 (Suzuki's Mike Webb)

Mike Webb tells more behind-the-scenes stories from working with Ryan Dungey and James Stewart with Team Suzuki. Plus, how it all shut down. Mike Webb lived the dream life, moving to the top of the racing food chain, as Suzuki team manager for the off-road squad and then transitioning into the top of the motocross and supercross team. From tons of GNCC championships to working with Ryan Dungey and James Stewart, Mike saw it all. However, it's not always as glorious as it seems, as Mike's time in the supercross paddock came after Roger De Coster and Ian Harrison left for KTM, and Suzuki's support budget was starting to wane. Mike inherited Ryan Dungey and the 450SX and 450MX titles, but Dungey wanted to leave with Roger, immediately. His Suzuki contract forced him to stay. Then Mike and company faced hard luck trying to defend the titles with Dungey, which left a mark. Mike eventually rebuilt with none other than James Stewart. Years later, Suzuki would shut Mike's factory program down, not once, but twice. There are some deep, deep stories from behind the scenes in this interview you won't want to miss. This is part 2 of our two-part podcast with Webb. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #252: Cooper Webb

Jason Weigandt and Jason Thomas got some time this week to talk to Cooper Webb and quiz him on how he approached the final stretch of the season and got the points lead back to a tie with four races to go. Also, he reveals what he's learned about Jett Lawrence's riding style, why things work so well for him with Monster Energy/Yamaha Star Racing, and why he always had such a tough time keeping the weight off -- he has Hashimoto's disease, which impacts the thyroid. With a lot of research and hard work, and his own special brand of grit, Webb has set up an amazing final four races in Monster Energy AMA Supercross. Here's how. Exhaust #251: The Cianciarulo Career

There was so much anticipation for Adam Cianciarulo's pro career when it began a little over a decade ago, and now we can look back at it in full because he's announced his retirement. Jason Weigandt has a few thoughts from Adam to share (via the SMX Insider show's exclusive interview) and then Weigandt adds his own thoughts. Hardly anyone had expectations to live up to like Adam did, because he was entering the ranks right on the heels of a 15-year run of Kawasaki Team Green prospects going straight to the top immediately, through Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, and Ryan Villopoto. Thus, the microscope was on Adam right from the start to see if he could be the next one, and for a brief moment, he delivered by winning supercross races immediately. Unfortunately, injuries then kicked in, leaving everyone wondering what might have been. Adam surely wondered this more than anyone, but was also able to gain perspective from it all. He might not have won all the races he would have won if he was healthy, but he might have emerged from the process as a better person. That's why his legacy is now not as one of the winningest riders ever, but one of the most liked. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #250: Carson Brown's Secret

Should dirt bikes get faster or slower? Better might not be better. Carson Brown has top-five supercross speed but prefers to rip on old bikes, minis, two-strokes and more. He knows slower and simpler is definitely more fun, and ultimately, probably better. Even if it's worse! While today's bikes posses an amazing blend of power and traction and undoubtably better than old stuff from an engineering standpoint, that capability means more speed, bigger jumps and more cost. Brown has legit speed, and was a top-five threat in 250SX West Region as recently as as 2022. But his real specialty is pit bikes, two-strokes and more, as evidenced by his unbelievable Instagram account where he rips modern-sized obstacles with modern style on bikes that were never intended for such. It's unreal to watch! As part of the famous BBR (Brown Brothers Racing) family that has become iconic in pit bike performance, Carson has ridden more bikes than most. He's having a really good time. What has he learned about mins, two-strokes and more? He's learned that they can be more fun than the big, new stuff. What's more, racing them could be better, too. Is this a message we should be hearing? Jason Weigandt chats with Carson in the latest edition of the Racer X Exhaust Podcast. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #249: Coty Schock's Remarkable Journey

Jason Weigandt calls up Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX Yamaha's Coty Schock to of course ask about his miraculous collarbone recovery in one week, but also to get his back story. Coty was absolutely, positively not on the motocross radar when he was younger, but he's gone from barely making the fast 40 night show qualification in supercross to on the verge of a podium. A lot has happened a long the way. Here's Coty's story. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand. Check out the Merch Madness sale and save up to 50%!

Exhaust #248: Randy Hawkins on Off-Road's Resurgence

Randy Hawkins is a member of the AMA Hall of Fame partially for his success as a racer, with seven AMA National Enduro Championships, and also for helping carry the load for American off-road racing in general. This is Randy's 28th season running the Am-Pro Yamaha off-road squad, which is Yamaha's factory program in the Progressive Grand National Cross Country Series and basically anywhere Yamaha races in the woods. Randy has seen the ups and downs for factory off-road racing, from "getting fired" by Team Suzuki as a racer, to setting up a fledgling Yamaha program in the early days, to developing four-strokes for off-road, and riding out the economic storm of the Great Recession. These days off-road is back in a huge way, from bike sales, to race entries, to factory budgets, and even the types of machines the manufacturers are now producing. Randy, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, had a chat with Jason Weigandt to explain how things started, and how it's going. Exhaust #247: The Hustler

Former WMX Racer Sara Price fought, battled, and clawed her way to a driving career, and nearly won Dakar in her first attempt. She was once a WMX racer with support from Kawasaki Team Green, but when her moto career, and the factory support for WMX racing, went away, she had to find a new way to stay competitive. She set her sights on off-road racing in trucks, but the process of succeeding on four wheels is far different from motocross. Sara joins Jason Weigandt to explain truck and car racing, which is based heavily on burning up the phones and emails to try to get financial support. It's a lot of hearing no, all in hopes of one big yes that can get you into a seat. After great success in Baja racing, Sara's goal has always been to tackle the famous Dakar Rally, which she finally got to do this year. And she battled for her win in her first attempt! Further, her boyfriend Ricky Brabec won the race in the motorcycle division. Sara's also an accomplished stunt driver and rider, and even appeared in a Toyota Super Bowl commercial on Sunday. There's a lot to talk about here. Check it out. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #244: Post Race Press Conference San Francisco

After a wild mud race at round 2 of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, hear from podium riders Chase Sexton, Eli Tomac, and Ken Roczen (450), and Jordon Smith, Levi Kitchen, and Garrett Marchbanks (250) in the post-race press conference, hosted by Dan Hubbard. Sexton and Tomac were happy to go 1-2 in these conditions, but they were just as happy with the improvements they felt they made during the week, and they think they would have been much better in the dry, also. Exhaust #243: Justin Cooper

Justin Cooper isn't one to draw attention to himself, so he's actually okay coming into his first full 450 season under the radar. There's less pressure that way, especially considering Cooper Webb and Eli Tomac are his teammates, and the standards for those guys are very high. But JCoop knows how to ride, he's been up front for his entire 250 career, and Anaheim proved he could be good on a 450, also. When Ken Roczen and Malcolm Stewart got collected and went down early, Cooper got claimed as well. He got up in 20th, and then rallied all the way back to eighth against a stacked field. He even passed Tomac, who was struggling. Maybe JCoop should be getting more attention. Jason Weigandt ringed him up to give him some. Exhaust #241: Pre Season Rider Check In

After a week chatting up riders out in California, Jason Weigandt tries to cut through the clutter. There's an annual pre-season tradition of every rider feeling faster, fitter and stronger for the new year, but that actually won't be the case for everyone once the racing season begins. Weege tries to cram in as many scoops and angles as he can in this podcast, summing up conversations with nearly every top racer, including Eli Tomac, Chase Sexton, Jett and Hunter Lawrence, Jason Anderson, Justin Barcia, Malcolm Stewart, Dylan Ferrandis, Christian Craig, Adam Cianciarulo, Justin Cooper, Levi Kitchen, Seth Hammaker, Max Vohland, Austin Forkner, Jalek Swoll, Colt Nichols, Benny Bloss and more. Exhaust #240: Phoenix Honda's David Eller

Phoenix Racing has been a championship player in a variety of racing series, including dominance in AMA Arenacross and AMA Pro ATV Motocross, and also operates Honda's factory GNCC team. It has only been a side player in AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross, however, until now. By adding Dylan Ferrandis to the team for the full 2024 season indoors and out, they've got a chance at podiums and race wins. How did this deal come about and how is the team preparing for this step? Jason Weigandt chats with Eller and Phoenix team manager Heath Harrison about the move. Exhaust #239: Dylan Ferrandis

Dylan Ferrandis' 2023 season was filled with frustration, as more injuries mounted in Monster Energy Supercross, and he could not gel with his bike in Pro Motocross. The Frenchman was even considering retirement at one point because he was no longer having fun on the motorcycle. This is a rider who wears his emotions on his sleeve and always tells you how he feels. What he really wanted to try was a Honda, but it wasn't easy to find a spot to race one. Enter David Eller of Phoenix Honda and Rick "Ziggy" Zielfelder of Factory Connection, with support for Dylan in 2024. Jason Weigandt chatted with Dylan, who is always brutally honest, about the frustration of supercross, his '23 troubles, and his hopes for the future. Exhaust #238: Brandon Hartranft

After a huge crash one year ago changed his life, The Brick is looking for purpose. Now he's teaming with Cooper Webb for a new online training program. The news was grim back in March when Jason Weigandt called Brandon Hartranft for an update. In the 2023 pre-season, Hartranft's engine cut out in a rhythm lane, and he went down hard. He was lucky to escape without getting paralyzed, but the road back to normal life was still extremely painful and frustrating. From major concussion problems to nerve damage and fused bones in his back, life has been tough for Brandon. Plus, his racing days are likely over, which is a stark reality for any athlete to confront. Cooper Webb has been a key friend to Brandon throughout this process, and now they've teamed up for a new training program, called Alphamotocrossdynamics, which provides online training and coaching. Brandon has moved to Florida, which also allows him to work hands-on with riders in the area, as well. Jason Weigandt checks in with Hartranft this time to see how he's doing physically and mentally, and also how Alphamotocrossdynamics works. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is sponsored by Yoshimura, Leatt, and Steel City Men's Clinic.
