The Analog Renaissance, Episode 9: Come With Me

When Bonnie Christine gathered her team together in April 2025, she asked a question that would change everything: What if the biggest innovation isn't digital at all? The data was undeniable. Vinyl sales hitting 18 consecutive years of growth. Barnes & Noble opening 60 new stores. Eleven million Americans are raising backyard chickens. 80% of Americans now garden, a 5-year high. Etsy's reporting a 40% surge in analog-themed shops. This wasn't nostalgia; it was a coping mechanism. A collective reaching for things we can touch in a world that feels increasingly untouchable. Welcome to The Analog Renaissance, Episode #9. In this final episode, Bonnie shares the most ambitious creative project of her career. Instead of recording another course, she asked: "What if we made something someone would want to put up on their big screen? Something beautiful to watch, not just to learn from?" Inspired by Magnolia and Florette, she reimagined all 200+ lessons as a cinematic journey. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/analog9 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ LEARN MORE ABOUT SURFACE DESIGN IMMERSION | https://www.bonniechristine.com/immersion ▸ FREE GUIDE - TURN YOUR CREATIVITY INTO DOLLARS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/dollars

The Analog Renaissance, Episode 8: Meeting Them In Their Analog Life

Welcome to The Analog Renaissance, Episode #8. In this episode, Bonnie shares an unexpected question she posed to her team: "What part of what we teach could someone learn while making biscuits?" That question led them to record a 90-minute audio version of their 63-page guide, Turn Your Creativity Into Dollars — designed to fit into the rhythm of everyday life. Because audio meets people where they are: in the garden, on a morning walk, behind the wheel, or folding laundry. She explains why that shift mattered. While an ebook can easily sit unopened in a downloads folder, audio becomes a companion. People listened while painting, walking, and living their lives — and many finished it because they could simply press play. Digital may be how we deliver information, but analog is how it becomes part of someone's life. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/analog8 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ LEARN MORE ABOUT SURFACE DESIGN IMMERSION | https://www.bonniechristine.com/immersion ▸ FREE GUIDE - TURN YOUR CREATIVITY INTO DOLLARS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/dollars

The Analog Renaissance, Episode 7: The Completion Obsession

Welcome to The Analog Renaissance, Episode #7. In this episode, Bonnie shares an email from a student that made her pause: "It took me 11 months. But it was wildly important for me to get certified." It highlighted something powerful. Self-paced courses typically see completion rates between 3-15%. Cohort-based programs, with community and accountability, can reach 85-90%. The content may be the same, but the experience changes everything. She shares the three intentional elements they built into Surface Design Immersion to support that transformation: Study Groups where peers connect and often stay together for years, Course Coaches who provide personalized roadmaps, and Certification that gives students a meaningful finish line. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/analog7 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ LEARN MORE ABOUT SURFACE DESIGN IMMERSION | https://www.bonniechristine.com/immersion ▸ FREE GUIDE - TURN YOUR CREATIVITY INTO DOLLARS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/dollars

When Bonnie Christine gathered her team together in April 2025, she asked a question that would change everything: What if the biggest innovation isn't digital at all? The data was undeniable. Welcome to The Analog Renaissance, Episode #4. In this episode, Bonnie tells the story of Pattern Magazine, a dream she carried quietly for years before bringing it into the world. While digital moves quickly, print creates space, inviting readers to linger, focus, and truly take it in. That philosophy unfolded in two meaningful ways: the launch of Pattern Magazine, now available nationwide at Barnes & Noble, and a thoughtful redesign of the Surface Design Immersion workbook experience. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/analog4 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ LEARN MORE ABOUT SURFACE DESIGN IMMERSION | https://www.bonniechristine.com/immersion ▸ FREE GUIDE - TURN YOUR CREATIVITY INTO DOLLARS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/dollars

Welcome to The Analog Renaissance, Episode #6. In this episode, Bonnie shares the turning point that led her to reimagine eight years of work and begin again. After hearing from more than 15,000 Surface Design Immersion alumni, one message rose to the surface: "I don't want to consume anymore. I want to create." That insight sparked two new paths — Flowerie, an e-commerce brand offering heirloom-quality creative tools, and the Print & Pattern Revival Workshop, where more than 100,000 people have created patterns they can actually hold in their hands. Because when you create something physical, something shifts. You move from questioning your creativity to seeing tangible proof of it. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/analog3 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ LEARN MORE ABOUT SURFACE DESIGN IMMERSION | https://www.bonniechristine.com/immersion ▸ FREE GUIDE - TURN YOUR CREATIVITY INTO DOLLARS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/dollars

Welcome to The Analog Renaissance, Episode #2. In this episode, Bonnie tells the story of attending the world's largest licensing expo in Las Vegas for the first time, arriving with only six appointments on the calendar and a minivan packed with fresh flowers, fabric swatches, and real garden beds. While nearby booths shimmered with LED lights and polished displays, her team built something tactile — something you could smell, touch, and feel. A space rooted in texture, scent, and real-world beauty. She walks through the decision to invest massively in face-to-face connections when everyone else was optimizing digital strategy. But more than that, she reveals the unexpected ripple effect, including a potential partnership with a company that works with talent like Ellen DeGeneres and Martha Stewart, all because they noticed the birds and flowers. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/analog2 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ LEARN MORE ABOUT SURFACE DESIGN IMMERSION | https://www.bonniechristine.com/immersion ▸ FREE GUIDE - TURN YOUR CREATIVITY INTO DOLLARS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/dollars

Ep 211211: The Career You've Been Dreaming Of (Yes, It's Real)

Once you start seeing it, you can't unsee it: our world is covered in patterns. From the notebook on your desk to the wallpaper in your favorite café, someone, somewhere, designed each of those. And in this episode, I want to open your eyes to the possibility that someone could be you. I share the very moment I discovered surface pattern design, while walking through my mom's fabric store, and how it sparked a career that allows me to work from anywhere, set my own schedule, and do creative work that lights me up. If you've ever dreamed of designing fabric, wallpaper, stationery, or gift wrap, or simply wondered if there's more for you, this episode is your invitation. We start by unpacking what surface pattern design actually is and the many ways it shows up in your everyday life. I walk you through two foundational levels on what I call the Pattern Path: Level 1 (Curious) and Level 2 (Emerging), and explain how this creative career is more accessible than you might think, even if you can't draw or don't consider yourself an artist (yet). I also gently address the most common fears that hold people back: "Isn't it too saturated?" "I can't draw." "I'm too late." You'll hear real stories from people who started from zero—like Heather, who learned digital design at 63, and others who built licensing careers by doing one small thing every day. If you're willing to commit just 15 minutes a day, that adds up to 90+ hours a year. That's enough to build a portfolio, launch your first mini collection, or pitch to your dream client. I'll guide you on how to structure those small daily wins and how to protect your time like it's sacred—because your future self deserves it. To close, I offer a few small but powerful prompts: Start noticing the patterns around you. Capture the ideas that light you up. And most importantly, allow yourself to dream. Because the creative career you've been dreaming of? It's real. And it's waiting for you. https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/211 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

210. From Vision to Print: The Birth of Pattern Magazine

We made a bet on beauty, permanence, and the tactile magic of print in a fast-paced, digital-first world, and that bet became Pattern Magazine, a 120-page quarterly print publication designed to inspire, inform, and live on your studio table for years to come. In this episode, I take you behind the scenes of exactly how we brought it to life, from the first spark of an idea to holding the finished magazine in our hands. I share the research that convinced us print is thriving, including how tactile experiences build trust, create emotional connection, and stand the test of time, and why now felt like the perfect moment to bring something slower and deeply human into the world. You'll hear the full eight-stage roadmap we used, starting with defining the vision and structuring the content into four intentional sections, creating editorial guidelines, budgeting and planning expenses, and choosing the right printer. I talk through the details of working with contributors, designing for print with templates and direction documents, and preparing for a thoughtful launch. You'll also hear the challenges we faced, from moments of overwhelm to the uncertainty of stepping into an industry we knew nothing about, and the lessons that kept us moving forward: you don't have to know everything before you start, you just have to care deeply and be willing to learn along the way. If you've ever dreamed of creating your own printed piece, whether that's a magazine, workbook, or other tangible publication, this episode will give you a clear framework to follow and the encouragement to bring your vision to life. And to make it easier, I'm sharing a free resource: our Printing Inquiry Email Template & Vendor List, with the exact email we used to reach out to printers and the list of vendors we contacted. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/210 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

209: Why We Created Alumni-Only Perks Inside Pattern+

From the very beginning of Surface Design Immersion, I've been deeply connected to the students who join us, especially our alumni. Over the years, I've watched them transform from curious beginners to confident artists, entrepreneurs, product developers, and educators. Their journey is a source of endless inspiration, and staying in relationship with them has shaped how I serve our community today. In this episode, I walk you through why we built alumni-only features inside Pattern+, our membership program. These additions aren't meant to exclude. They're designed to serve more personally, more deeply, and with more intention. As our community grew, we realized that alumni have different needs than brand-new members. They've already learned the tools, they speak the language, and they're ready to build something big. So, we created a space for them to keep going with ongoing coaching, industry insights, and deep peer support. I share the three main touchpoints for our alumni insiders: relaxed, honest monthly coaching sessions, support from our expert Love Squad, and a dedicated community space. These are all simple by design, because simplicity helps maintain meaning and focus. The trust and clarity this structure builds has been transformational, not just for our alumni, but for new members too, who benefit from a space tailored just for them. Whether you run a membership, offer coaching, or serve clients in another way, this episode is packed with insights on how to layer your support and build long-term relationships with your audience. You'll learn how to meet people exactly where they are, without overwhelming them or watering down the experience. I encourage you to pause and ask, "What does this person need next?" The answers may help you build something truly lasting. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/209 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

208: The Blueprint Behind Pattern+: What's Actually Inside

Pattern Plus was born from a deep desire to create something both simple and profoundly strategic for surface pattern designers. In this episode, I walk you through exactly what's inside the membership and how it's helping over 4,000 members gain clarity, save time, and make consistent progress in their businesses, without the overwhelm. I share the core problems we're solving: the stuck-ness that comes from not knowing what to prioritize, the overwhelm of too many scattered resources, and the time loss creatives often face just trying to figure out what to do next. Here's a breakdown of what's included: The Monthly Industry Kit: Practical tools like professional mockups, social media prompts, business templates, and AI tools—delivered monthly to help you work smarter, not harder. The Licensing Brief: A real-world opportunity to pitch your designs to a dream company each month. Even if you don't submit, working through the briefs strengthens your portfolio and professional skill set. Pattern Magazine: A quarterly digital publication packed with inspiring, strategic content across lifestyle, business, productivity, and creativity. It's visually stunning and thoughtfully written. Quarterly Trend Reports: 35+ page guides packed with color palettes, themes, motifs, and typography forecasts to spark collection ideas and save hours of research. Monthly Coaching Sessions: Deep-dive conversations with me on the real challenges creatives face, giving you personalized insight and support. I wrap up the episode by zooming out to the bigger picture: how Pattern Plus is helping members reclaim their time, protect their energy, and stay focused on what matters most. It's not about doing more—it's about doing the right things. And it's all organized to meet you where you are, so you can make progress without pressure. Whether you're building your portfolio, pitching your work, or just trying to stay consistent—Pattern Plus was made for you. I want you to know it's a toolbox, not a finish line. 207: Flourish to Pattern+: What I Learned by Listening

Something wasn't quite right, but it wasn't obvious. A few familiar names stopped showing up. The community felt quieter. Emails trickled in with kind words and lingering overwhelm. Rather than dismissing the shift or powering through, I chose to pause and truly listen. In this episode, I take you behind the scenes of how that pause sparked one of the biggest transformations we've ever made: the shift from Flourish to Pattern+. I walk you through the exact steps we took to uncover what our members truly needed and how we redesigned our entire membership from the ground up as a result. We talk about the power of feedback, the courage it takes to make change, and the beauty of creating something new that better serves the people it's intended for. I share the kinds of questions we asked, the themes that emerged (hello, overwhelm), and how we distilled that into a membership rooted in simplicity, clarity, momentum, and connection. If you've ever felt like something in your business isn't clicking or wondered what to do when people walk away, this episode is for you. 206: The Power of a Press Kit

A small, thoughtful press kit turned out to be one of the most impactful tools we brought to our latest licensing trade show. In this episode, I'm sharing how this tiny detail—something we nearly overlooked—sparked major conversations, opened unexpected doors, and ultimately stole the show. We were deep in the chaos of pre-show preparation, ironing, assembling, and punching holes for this little piece of collateral when we began to wonder if it would even be worth it. But it absolutely was. More than any other part of our setup, the press kit is what people remembered, what they held onto, and what they took back to their teams. Inside this episode, I walk you through the full behind-the-scenes: how we designed it, what made it so effective, and why it was such a powerful tool for building meaningful connection. I also break down exactly what we included, like my personal story, key stats, ways to collaborate, selected work, and clear calls to action, and how you can do the same. Whether you're heading to a trade show, pitching collaborations, or simply want a standout asset to share digitally, a press kit can help you make an unforgettable first impression. Here's what makes it so powerful: • It tells your story clearly and concisely in your voice. • It includes relevant, warm, approachable stats. • It highlights ways to collaborate. • It showcases your best work in a curated, beautiful way. • It invites people to stay in touch with clear, accessible contact info. I encourage you to create your own. Start in a simple document, then have fun designing it. Thoughtfulness speaks louder than scale, and simplicity often tells a clearer, more compelling story. Don't underestimate the small tools; they just might carry the most power. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/206 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

205: What We're Bringing to the Table at Expo

Bringing our vision to life at the Licensing Expo was one of the most rewarding and meaningful experiences of my creative career, and in this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on what it was really like. I share the inspiration and intentionality behind every detail of our booth, from the concept of a welcoming "greenhouse" to the birds I hand-sculpted with over 100 hours of love and labor. I talk through the creative decisions that shaped our booth, including the layout, live floral installation, tactile displays, and the thoughtful storytelling woven throughout. I also get honest about the challenges: budget constraints, intense hands-on setup, and the self-doubt that crept in as we realized our space looked so different from others. But that contrast? It's what made our booth magnetic. People stepped inside and instantly felt something shift. And that told us everything we needed to know. This episode is full of insights for any creative, whether or not you plan to attend a trade show. I share how to think about your own visual storytelling, create tactile connections with your audience, and root everything you do in deep, meaningful narrative. I hope it encourages you to imagine how you can bring your work to life in a way that is beautifully and uniquely yours. Here are a few key areas I cover: Designing an immersive experience that reflects the soul of your work How we overcame budget and material challenges to stay true to our vision Why physical, hands-on storytelling still stands out in a digital world How our booth created an oasis in the overstimulation of Las Vegas Simple steps you can take to begin building your own creative storytelling space By the end of the episode, you'll have a fresh perspective on how to share your work in a way that draws people in and leaves a lasting impression. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/205 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

204: Inside Our Expo Strategy

Stepping into the Licensing Expo for the very first time was both exhilarating and intimidating. In this episode, I take you behind the scenes of how we approached exhibiting at the world's largest licensing trade show in Las Vegas—from our earliest preparations to what happened after the doors closed. We didn't come with flashy campaigns or loud visuals. Instead, we showed up with clarity, intention, and a booth designed to feel like an extension of my studio—warm, welcoming, and rooted in story. We talk through how we turned doubt into confidence, especially in the face of well-established booths with full schedules when we only had six appointments booked ahead of time. But the moment the doors opened, everything changed. The unique, heartfelt approach we took began drawing people in immediately, and soon, we were booking over a hundred appointments on-site. What made the difference? Our commitment to authenticity, the clear strategy we implemented, and a beautifully immersive booth experience. Here are a few things I share in this episode: The emotional and strategic decisions that shaped our booth experience. Why standing out (not fitting in) was our biggest strength. 203: Prepping the Portfolio: Back to Our Roots

Before I ever signed a licensing deal or showed my work at a trade show, I had one thing—a portfolio. In this episode, I take you back to the roots of my very first handmade portfolio and walk you through how I've translated that same heartfelt essence into a new, fully digital version for today. This journey has come full circle, and I want to share not only the story behind my original bound book but also how you can create a meaningful online portfolio that feels like an experience. I open up about the emotional connection behind that first portfolio—how I bound it by hand, infused it with personal touches, and carried it with me to my very first quilt market in 2012. Fast forward to this year at the Licensing Expo, I needed a portfolio that echoed that same warmth and story, but in a digital format. I'll walk you through the exact approach I took, including what made it resonate with people and how you can do the same. Here are a few key areas I cover: Starting with Story: Why your portfolio should begin with your "why" before jumping into your work. Designing for Feeling: Creating an emotional flow in your layout, not just a functional catalog. Making it Personal: How to integrate your process and personality into a digital format that feels alive and human. We're in a moment where heartfelt, human-made work is in high demand. Your story matters—and when woven into your portfolio, it opens doors that a simple gallery never could. Whether you're just starting out or updating an old site, I hope this episode inspires you to approach your portfolio with new clarity and heart. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/203 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

202: How We Celebrate Workiversaries: Moments Not to be Missed

Celebrating milestones might seem small, but the impact is anything but. In this episode, I'm sharing a peek behind the scenes at how we intentionally honor and uplift our team through something we call "workiversaries"—the anniversaries of when each person joined Team Bonnie Christine. These moments of recognition go far beyond just marking a date. They are powerful opportunities to pause, reflect, and celebrate the people who help bring our work to life. Even if you don't have a team, I encourage you to celebrate the people who support you. Whether it's a contractor, a friend, or a neighbor, those little moments of acknowledgment matter. And if you're still running things on your own, like I did for over a decade, celebrating your own milestones can be just as powerful. We close with three reflection questions to help you build meaningful team traditions, spark connection, and create a culture rooted in appreciation. I've also created a special free download—a gift ideas list you can use for birthdays, team milestones, or just-because moments. No matter your budget or business size, simple celebrations can go a long way. It's about showing people they matter and making sure they know their presence is appreciated. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/202 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

201: How To Organize A Weekly Newsletter: The Purpose Behind Our Template

Today, I'm sharing how I went from struggling to write regular emails to building a system that helps us send two value-packed newsletters with ease and joy. You'll learn the purpose behind our two biweekly newsletters—"Secrets of the Studio" for surface pattern designers and "Beneath the Surface" for creative entrepreneurs—and how having a clear structure and cadence changed everything. I walk through the importance of defining your audience, creating intentional sections, and using a repeatable template to take the guesswork out of writing. With tools like Kit and thoughtful planning, we've created newsletters that not only feel good to send, but are fun and inspiring to read too. Whether you're just getting started or looking to refine your own newsletter rhythm, I hope this inspires you to find a system that works beautifully for you. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/201 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

Ep 200200: The Role of Surveys: Shaping Our Business Strategies

As creative entrepreneurs, we often find ourselves wondering what our audience wants—what they're thinking, needing, or hoping we'll create next. In this episode, I share one of the most powerful tools we use to stop guessing and start knowing: surveys. You'll hear exactly how we ask meaningful questions, the specific ones we rely on, and how we design surveys that lead to clear and confident decision-making. The episode begins with a funny (and humbling) story about a yacht surprise gone sideways. It's a lighthearted reminder of how important it is to ask the right questions before making decisions, whether big or small. From there, I walk through three detailed examples of how surveys have shaped key areas of our business this past year: email newsletters, product development, and live events. You'll learn how one simple survey question led to a major new feature in our Pattern Plus membership, how asking about newsletter cadence brought instant clarity, and how we use post-event feedback to improve each year's conference. I also share the framework we use to build surveys that are simple, specific, and impactful—along with the tools and practices that help us get great results. If you've ever felt unsure about what your audience wants or needs, this episode will show you just how easy and effective it can be to ask. You don't have to wonder. You just have to ask. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/200 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

Ep 199199: How to Build a Thriving Membership Site featuring Stu McLaren

Stu McLaren is one of the most impactful mentors I've ever had, and I'm thrilled to bring him back to the podcast to talk about a topic that can completely transform your creative business: recurring revenue through membership sites. Stu's course, The Membership Experience, was a game changer for me. It's the only course I've ever completed on time, and it's one I return to year after year. After taking it, my membership revenue shifted from unpredictable spikes to a steady, staircase-like pattern of growth. In this episode, we explore why recurring revenue is so powerful—especially for creatives who often juggle inconsistent income streams and the demands of hands-on work. Stu shares his journey of moving from burnout and one-on-one service work to launching Wishlist Member, the world's number one WordPress membership plugin. That experience gave him unique insight into what makes a membership site succeed over time. We discuss why creatives are uniquely suited to this model, with stories of artists, painters, sticker designers, and teachers who now run thriving memberships. Stu and I also tackle common concerns like the fear of content burnout and the myth of "subscription fatigue." He offers practical, encouraging advice on how to create a membership that delivers real results and keeps your members engaged. Whether you already run a membership, are thinking about launching one, or are simply curious, this conversation is full of wisdom and actionable ideas. Stu's upcoming free live workshop is also something I recommend wholeheartedly—it's one of the most energizing events I attend every year. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/199 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

197: From Overlap to Ownership: Aligning Your Team for Success

In this episode, we're diving into one of the biggest challenges that growing teams face: role clarity and alignment. When businesses start out, it's natural for everyone to pitch in and wear multiple hats. But as the business grows, this all-hands-on-deck approach can lead to confusion, inefficiencies, and even burnout. That's why today's conversation is all about how to ensure that your team is working together with clarity, confidence, and a shared sense of ownership. I share a personal story that sparked my realization about the importance of communication; let's just say it involved neon paint, a carefully planned outfit, and an unexpected hug! From there, I break down the four key steps to aligning your team and fostering a culture of accountability: Create an Accountability Chart – Define roles and responsibilities so every team member knows what they own. Use the GWC Framework – Ensure every team member "Gets it, Wants it, and has the Capacity" to succeed in their role. Set 90-Day Rocks – Break down your vision into measurable, actionable priorities. Establish a Meeting Cadence – Keep communication strong with weekly and quarterly check-ins. With these steps, you'll create a work environment where your team is rowing in the same direction, projects are completed on time, and goals are achieved with excellence. Plus, I'm sharing a free accountability chart template to help you put this into action. Whether you're leading a team or envisioning your dream team as a solopreneur, this episode will help you bring clarity and structure to your business. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/197 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

196: The Structure That Supports Freedom: Why Your Business Needs an Operating System

Does running your creative business sometimes feel like a circus? You're juggling tasks, managing projects, and trying to keep everything in motion, while secretly wondering if there's a better way. In this episode, I'm sharing one of the most transformative shifts I've made in my business: implementing an operating system. An operating system isn't just for big corporations. No matter the size of your business, having a structured framework helps bring clarity, alignment, and efficiency to your workflow. It can transform how you work, how your team communicates, and how your business grows. I dive into: The signs that your business needs an operating system (miscommunication, delays, and inefficiencies sound familiar?) How the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) completely changed the way my team operates Other systems you might consider, including Scaling Up and 4DX (The Four Disciplines of Execution) Four actionable steps to streamline your business: Choose a system that fits your business size and needs Align your team around a clear vision Implement key tools like scorecards, priorities (Rocks), and an issues list Run structured, productive meetings to keep everyone on track I know that structure might sound like it stifles creativity, but I've found the opposite to be true. A strong operating system actually frees you up to be more creative because you're not constantly managing chaos. With clear processes in place, you can focus on doing the work you love. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/196 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

195: Building Trust: How to Empower Your Team to Take the Lead

Do you ever feel like your business is entirely on your shoulders, like every decision, deadline, and detail depends on you alone? I see you. I've been there too. But what if you could empower your team to not only take on tasks but truly own them—sometimes even doing them better than you? In this episode, we're diving into the power of delegation and trust. I know firsthand how difficult it is to let go, especially when your work is deeply personal. But the reality is that refusing to delegate is the riskiest move of all. It keeps you stuck in a cycle of overwork and burnout, limiting your impact and slowing your growth. If you want to step into true leadership and scale your business, you have to build a team that doesn't just support you, they lead alongside you. I share my own turning point, when I realized I couldn't keep carrying everything alone. By implementing the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) and building clear accountability structures, my team started thriving. In this episode, I walk you through the exact framework I use to empower my team, including: Defining roles clearly with an accountability chart Starting small to build trust gradually Setting clear expectations using 90-day goals (or "rocks") Holding weekly check-ins to maintain progress and solve challenges together Celebrating wins because recognition fuels motivation When you put these strategies into place, you create a business that runs efficiently, a team that feels empowered, and the freedom to focus on the work that truly lights you up. If you're ready to take action, I've also created a Delegation Checklist to guide you step by step. Download it from the show notes at theprofessionalcreative.com. 193: The Simple Practice I Never Skip

In today's episode, we're diving into the transformative power of gratitude and how developing a simple gratitude practice can reshape your mindset, spark creativity, and guide you through life's challenges. I share personal stories about how gratitude helped me through some of my most overwhelming times, including the early days of building my creative career. Gratitude doesn't just happen—it's intentional. I explain how pausing to reflect on what we're thankful for can shift our perspective from what's missing to what's abundant, creating a foundation for joy and resilience. I also share my own daily practice, which involves setting aside a few moments each morning to journal about what I'm grateful for, specific moments of growth, and even the challenges that have shaped my journey. I talk about how gratitude has not only influenced my personal growth but also my work as a creative and an educator. Hearing stories from students whose lives have been transformed through surface pattern design fills me with gratitude and reminds me why I love doing this work. To help you start or deepen your own gratitude practice, I've created a free printable gratitude prompt. This tool can help you build a daily habit that's simple yet impactful. Just like having a workout partner, learning alongside someone else keeps you motivated, engaged, and accountable. Stay on track (or don't stress if you fall behind). Life happens, and missing a lesson doesn't mean you should stop showing up. Keep going and take advantage of replays. Connect to your why. Before starting, get clear on why you're attending. 188: The Small Team Strategy: How Breaking Into Groups Can Supercharge Your Projects

In today's episode, I'm sharing a strategy that has transformed how my team tackles big projects: working in smaller, focused groups. Whether you're running a team of 13 like I am or collaborating with peers on a shared goal, breaking into smaller groups can unlock efficiency, foster deeper collaboration, and help everyone take ownership of their role. I discuss how this approach works within my own projects, such as launching Flowerie, our e-commerce shop, and producing Immersion Live, our annual conference. I also introduce two powerful frameworks—Dan Martell's 1-3-1 framework and the 10-80-10 delegation model—that can streamline decision-making and empower your team to work independently while still aligning with your vision. Here's how these concepts come to life: The 1-3-1 framework requires team members to come to you with one problem, three solutions, and one recommendation. It reduces your decision-making burden while strengthening their problem-solving skills. The 10-80-10 model allows you to shape a project's vision, let your team handle the bulk of the work, and return for the final touches. It's all about empowering your team while preserving your creative input. No matter the size of your team, these strategies ensure smoother project execution and foster a culture of trust and efficiency. Tune in to learn how these simple but effective tools can elevate your creative business and help you step into your zone of genius. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/188 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

187: How to Succeed in Wholesale: Expert Tips and Tricks with Guest Katie Hunt

In this episode of The Professional Creative, I'm thrilled to welcome Katie Hunt, founder of Proof to Product and a true expert in wholesale. Katie has dedicated her career to helping creative entrepreneurs get their products into stores, and today she's sharing her best insights with us. If you've ever wondered whether wholesale is right for your business, or if you've tried it but struggled to get traction, this conversation is packed with essential guidance to set you on the right path. We begin with Katie's journey into wholesale—starting with her own product-based business and her realization that so many talented makers needed guidance on the business side of things. Her early experiences inspired her to create Paper Camp, a comprehensive program that's now helped thousands of creatives navigate wholesale successfully. Katie shares the key indicators that signal it's time to explore wholesale, including the importance of having a robust product line and understanding pricing for profitability. We also discuss the rise of online wholesale platforms like Faire, and why you can't rely on algorithms or platforms alone to grow your business. Katie encourages listeners to approach wholesale intentionally, avoiding the trap of letting outside forces dictate their business strategy. One of the most eye-opening parts of our conversation is Katie's four-step decision-making matrix, which helps you evaluate every opportunity through the lens of heart, money, time, and impact. This framework is incredibly useful for making confident, data-driven decisions in every area of your business. Katie also shares insights from her 2024 industry survey, revealing surprising statistics, like how 15% of product-based businesses aren't using email marketing at all—a missed opportunity for sustainable growth. We wrap up by talking about the power of trade shows, the rise of regional shows, and how creative entrepreneurs can maximize in-person sales. If you're curious about wholesale or thinking about how to grow your product-based business, this episode will give you clarity, encouragement, and a concrete action plan. Katie's wisdom and experience are second to none. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/187 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

186: The 7 Biggest Mistakes New Surface Designers Make (and How to Avoid Them)

In this episode, I dive into the seven most common mistakes I see new surface pattern designers make—and offer practical advice on how to avoid them. These lessons come from my experience mentoring thousands of designers, but they're universal enough to apply to creatives of all kinds. If you've ever felt rushed, stuck, or unsure about your creative path, this episode is here to guide and encourage you. We start by addressing the rush to monetize and how it can stifle your growth, followed by the dangers of comparing your beginning to someone else's middle. I unpack the importance of finding your unique audience and not trying to please everyone. We'll also explore why skipping practice for perfection is a trap and how ignoring the business side of your art can hold you back. The power of community is a recurring theme—why you need it and how to find the right group to support your journey. Finally, I discuss the heartbreaking reality of giving up too soon and why persistence is the key to long-term success. 185: How to Pursue Big Dreams: Ask Yourself These 5 Questions

In this episode, I'm sharing a fresh perspective to kickstart your creative journey and tackle those big dreams you've been holding close. Together, we'll explore how to make your goals feel actionable and achievable by asking five pivotal questions. Big dreams often feel overwhelming, but the key to pursuing them lies in breaking them down into meaningful, manageable steps. I share my personal story of taking small, consistent actions toward my dream of becoming a fabric designer, turning a once-daunting idea into a thriving career. Along the way, I highlight the importance of connecting with supportive individuals, making consistent progress, and creating an environment that fosters creativity and focus. Here are the five key questions I pose to help you fine-tune your vision and ignite action: Who can I look to for support? Big dreams thrive with encouragement, accountability, and mentorship. Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you. What can I commit to? Consistency matters more than intensity. Even 15 minutes a day can snowball into significant progress. Where will I cultivate this dream? Set up a space and routines that make showing up for your dream easy and inspiring. What is my why? Anchor yourself with purpose, and let your bigger vision carry you through challenging moments. Am I ready to let go of perfection? Embrace mistakes as part of the journey and let experimentation fuel your growth. I also share a special invitation to my free event, Pattern Week, where I'll teach you how to create a repeating pattern in just five days. Whether it's designing your first fabric or completing a long-held creative project, this event is all about turning dreams into tangible results. As we embark on this new year, let's embrace the power of small steps, intentionality, and a belief in the value of our dreams. 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/185 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

174: Fall Q&A: Your Burning Questions Part 2

Welcome back, everyone, to another round of Q&A in which I will be answering some of your burning questions! This time, I reflect on things such as where I see myself and my business in the next five to ten years. While long-term vision admittedly is not always my strongest suit, my team and I recently pushed ourselves to create a five-year plan that includes exciting growth goals across various areas! I also answer questions about the challenges of focus (something that I like to call our creative "Kryptonite") and share how my team has been honing our priorities to stay on track with our mission, and you will hear me discuss some pivotal moments in my career and the mentors who helped shape my path. I additionally touch on the importance of family and work-life balance, sharing how I navigate both, especially with two kids now in school, and I discuss my homebody tendencies, gardening, and the joy of raising chickens and crafting with my daughter! I really hope that you will join me for this second round of questions and for this thoughtful, personal episode filled with stories, lessons, and tips on everything from business strategy to maintaining creative energy, and, as always, remember that there's room for you! 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/174 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide

173: Fall Q&A: Your Burning Questions Part 1

Welcome to another episode of The Professional Creative, everyone! Get ready because I have a special treat for you, a two-part Q&A series. In this episode, I am diving headfirst into your thought-provoking questions and am covering quite a bit of ground! I kick things off with a deep question about areas where I still feel that I need to grow, reminding me of the importance of leadership and integrity. I have dreams galore, from seeing my art on products to maybe even a TV show about surface pattern design, but it's all about embracing the journey, right? I am also asked about a career low point, and boy, does that ever hit home! Getting rejected by a fabric company made me question everything, but it ultimately taught me the strength of perseverance. Empathy grew from that experience, reminding me that we all face nay-sayers at different stages of our lives, but we've got to keep pushing through! Then, there is, of course, AI, truly a hot topic today with lots and lots of opinions floating around, so here is my take: AI in the design world is here, and it's shaking things up. Whether you are an artwork architect using AI creatively or a traditional artist staying analog, there's a place for everyone. I believe that we should be embracing AI as a helper, not a replacement. New challenges with growth bring up important questions about focus and financial stewardship, truly important stuff as we navigate new levels in our careers, so stay tuned as we tackle what traits make successful professional creatives! 📒 Episode Notes, Links, & Resources 📒 https://www.professionalcreative.com/blog/173 📝 Read the Transcript 📝 Connect with Bonnie: ▸ ONLINE | http://bonniechristine.com ▸ INSTAGRAM | https://instagram.com/bonniechristine ▸ START SIMPLE IN SURFACE DESIGN | FREE MINI CLASS | https://www.bonniechristine.com/startsimple ▸ FREE SURFACE DESIGN GUIDE | https://www.bonniechristine.com/guide
