Ep 284Mid-Year Review (15 Lessons Learned so far in 2020)
E15 Lessons Learned so far in 2020 1. I’ve learned that the goal of our study of philosophy is not to live in the way that they taught, but to think in the way that they thought. Anyone can follow a 10-step program, but the real value of study is to learn how to think. If you can think like Seneca, or Marcus Aurelius, or Epictetus, or Epicurus, or Crates, or Socrates, or Plato, then you can lay that thought over the world we live in today, and you can make decisions not through some ancient authority, but through your own reason. 2. Stop, sit, listen, look, pay attention to where you are, who you are, what you are. We have so much information at our fingertips, but how often do you take the time to simply sit with yourself? Sometimes we have to stop filling our mind with new content so that we can let what we’ve previously learned settle. Even books can hold you back from seeing information that would be most valuable to you. 3. Be cautious of the things that take your attention. Your attention, your time, your thoughts, they are precious and far more valuable than any other commodity, yet all to often we treat them as if they harbour the lowest of value. 4. Listen to how you feel when you feel. Don’t be afraid to let go when listening to your favourite song, as long as you know how you feel and why you feel it. Don’t shy away from being drawn in by an advertisement, as long as you know why you’re being drawn in and how it makes you feel. Scroll Twitter if you like, as long as you pay attention to how that makes you feel. It’s not externals which deceive us, but it’s our own unwillingness to care about where we are and how we feel which gets in the way of personal progress. 5. Remember that we live in a world where some of our best and smartest people spend all of their time learning how you think, what you think, and why you think, so that they can use that information to create problems for you and then to solve those problems with products and services, or with catchy headlines and contentious content. Be cautious of these modern magicians and the spells they cast on your mind. 6. Use Epictetus’ formula for successful personal change - self scrutiny mixed with self kindness. Too much scrutiny, you’ll never be at peace. Too much kindness, you’ll never move forward. Forgive yourself from time to time, and allow yourself the space to make small but powerful improvements in your character. 7. Character development is difficult, but you’re stronger than it is hard. 8. Please don’t choose teams. Learn to be a lover of good ideas, not a lover of tribes. Love good thoughts and good actions, not good campaign slogans. Make sure that what you do is the product of your own conclusions, not the conclusions of your team. 9. Tend to the part of the garden that you can touch. There’s so much to fix, and there are so many people to save. Start by saving yourself, then your family, then your community, and then maybe once you’ve done that you can start to think about saving your country. Let the constant question be on your mind, what is my duty? To whom am I indebted? What can I fix? How can I help? 10. Know that you don’t have to do, be, or say anything. That’s the beauty of life - you get to make that part up. If you ever feel that you’ve been bogged down in other people’s wants, other people’s desires, and other people’s plans for your life then join the club. That’s how the story’s written. But remember death, and remember that there’s no time better to free yourself than now. You won’t become free immediately, but maybe you can unshackle yourself one chain at a time. 11. Simple acts of kindness go a long way. Never underestimate the power of a smile, a shared moment, a generous act, or as Marcus Aurelius suggests, intuitive friendship. The simplest of changes render the largest of changes in the long run, so start there. 12. If you decide that everything and everyone could teach you something, then you always learn. 13. Complexity is beautiful to those who think complexly. 14. Don’t disguise your inaction or personal solitude as a well developed moral character that is simply too far beyond the trappings of the world. That doesn’t make your character better. That just makes you a coward. 15. Trust yourself. We too often get bogged down in 10 step guides and the latest information on how to optimise every area of our lives, but here’s the thing: you know you better than anyone else. You know your challenges better than anyone else. You know your strengths better than anyone else. You also know your solutions better than anyone else, but we live in a society where we’re so obsessed with solving other people’s problems, and having other people solve ours. Listen to yourself, and listen with a genuine intent to hear solutions, and tell me that you don’t hear an undernourished voice which yearns to guide you down a meaningful path. Its advice may seem daunting, but as you listen, it gets louder and clearer. Simon Drew Li

It’s as if there’s an extravagant party happening in the mansion, and I’m trying to see what’s happening inside by looking through a keyhole on the kitchen door. I know there’s plenty of grand and exciting things happening, but for now all I can do is trust that with enough time I’ll be able to put a few pieces together. I tend to have quite an obsessive personality, and I have definitely jumped around a lot in my life. From a young age my parents could see that if I was going to try something then I really wanted to try it. If I was riding horses then I wanted to be the cowboy! If I was playing music then I wanted to be on the stage becoming the best entertainer I could be! When I went to church I wanted to look the part, and when I wasn’t going to church I wanted to have all of the perfectly good reasons why I wasn’t. I’d like to say that this kind of “all in or nothing” attitude came down to a desire to give 100% to everything I was doing, but honestly in hindsight I can say that I wasn’t trying to go all in on anything. Rather, I think I was trying to give the appearance that I knew what life was all about when in reality I had absolutely no idea, and in trying to appear to be something, I now see that I was simply hiding the fact that I knew nothing. To me, the appearance of having the answers was more important than actually having any answers, and so I jumped around from one thing to another, always tasting but never being nourished. Have you ever noticed that we all seem to think we have the answers? You only have to look as far back as your last family gathering to see that we all have a pretty unhealthy relationship with the words “I don’t know.” Just look around the world and see the division that is created simply because we can’t admit that we don’t have all the answers. Left vs right, religious vs atheist, woman vs man, black vs white. Every belief structure is the one true way, every ideology is the winner, every experience is the truth. But how could that be? How is it that there are so many ways, so many winners and so many truths? Well if you’ll let me, I’d like to invite you to look through the same keyhole that I’m looking through so that you might see what I see. Get comfortable, turn on your imagination, and meditate on the ideas to follow. How do humans perceive time? Well, it seems clear that we have an extremely narrow vision of time. This narrow vision is probably shown most clearly in our tendency to think only within the confines of our own lifetimes. We’re driven by all kinds of biological and psychological phenomena that help us to survive day to day, week to week, and month to month until we inevitably die, but even after we have ceased to perceive the world, which is really all that death is, the world keeps on going as it always has, and the elements of the body will continue to repurpose themselves as they always have. So in order to fully understand the philosophies, religions, ideologies, and belief structures that we cling to so fervently we must first begin with the understanding that our ability to perceive them is far younger than they are, and therefore these ideas have been perceived and used for far longer than we have been able to perceive them. And let’s take it one step further and recognise that our own biological makeup has been forming itself since the beginning of time, so you aren’t simply you and your beliefs aren’t simply your beliefs, but rather you are a mix of the millions of people who came before you, and your beliefs are the result of thousands of years of those beliefs being conceptualised, formed, upgraded, updated and perfected. I bring us to these kinds of thoughts because if we’re going to think that we know anything then we had better start by knowing the things that are far older than our ability to know anything. And when you come to this place, doesn’t it seem that we don’t have ideas, but that ideas have us? Why else would it be so difficult to admit when you’re wrong? You’re being run by an idea that predates you, and you’re believing that idea while using circuitry and wiring that has been in the works since long before you were here. And not only can this bring a certain level of understanding about the way that you act, but try for a

With the coronavirus stretching it’s reach around the world it’s becoming clearer with every new headline that the world we live in is undergoing a shift that will shape generations to come. The great Stoic philosopher Epictetus once remarked that “Circumstances don't make the man, they only reveal him to himself.” In this same way it would be correct to say that global challenge reveals humanity to itself. The kind of global unrest seen at this time is of the sort that breaks down paradigms and reveals to us what’s real and what’s fake, what matters and what doesn’t, what’s worth pursuing and what we can leave aside. We’re living in a time where millions of people will be out of work soon if they aren’t already, governments are debating spending trillions of dollars to keep the economies of the world flowing, and collectively we are being forced into a position where we all need to ask ourselves how we should act in this specific situation and also how we should act moving forward into the rest of this decade which, I assure you, will hold a great deal more challenges than what we’ve seen so far in just the first three months. Ultimately what we’re seeing now is a global shift in consciousness far greater than any of us have seen in our lifetimes, and I think that possibly the most important question to ask at the moment is this: what’s been missing, and therefore what must be rediscovered? For those who are philosophically inclined, these questions aren’t simply stored away for that rainy day or for that global pandemic. Rather, these questions are a part of everyday life. In fact, the Stoic philosopher Seneca once suggested that the budding student of philosophy should do for his mind what the soldier does for his body in times of peace, and that is to rehearse the very horror he hopes to be prepared for, to learn what makes him healthy and what makes him ill, and to exercise those things within his control so that when tragedy strikes he can confidently say, “I knew”. See, the serious student of philosophy may not be surprised by times like these, but rather he might be glad to find that his training has paid off. And this isn’t to say that he wouldn’t experience hardship or difficulties. He may have his fair share of troubles to deal with, but what he wouldn’t say is that he didn’t know. This knowledge brings strength. One particular exercise that the student of philosophy might engage in is that of experiencing the world from an outsider's perspective, so that instead of being a mere player in the game, or being played by the game (whichever side you take on the free will debate), he can stand back and watch the game from afar with the hope that he might come back having learned some of the rules, because as Seneca also said, “if you don't know which port you are sailing to, no wind is favourable.” In a way, we’re all outsiders looking in and interpreting what we see, and we know this because there are as many different ways of conceptualising the world as there are people to conceptualise it, but maybe as an exercise in exploring your ability to reframe your perception you could imagine yourself watching from a different angle. Just for a moment, imagine you’re watching a kind of nature documentary about the most intelligent animals on this planet - humans. Watch from a safe distance and view the scenes of this wonderful tribal animal wandering the earth, creating settlements, towns, and eventually cities. Watch as they develop new ideas, new technologies, and new ways of adapting to the ever changing landscape of their ecosystem. They develop science, philosophy, mathematics, languages, music, art, culture, political systems, economic systems, businesses, organisations, social networks, and numerous devices designed to make life supposedly easier for themselves. When you look at humanity like this it can be absolutely exhilarating, and if you view the human race not over years but over centuries or even millennia, you might conclude that what we’ve managed to achieve over this time is absolutely and undoubtedly breathtaking. If, while you’re watching this documentary of humanity, you are studious enough to look for patterns, which might be best described in this case as “rules of the game”, then you might notice that humanity as a whole has one fatal flaw, as any magnificent entity or hero must have. Our flaw is that despite our seemingly infinite potential, our relentless forward progress, and our unwavering commitment to the expansion of our knowledge, we are still bound by the powerful laws of nature that brought us into being and that will eventually wear us down so that we may be repurposed and recycled bac
