Schmidt worked on the George W Bush presidential campaign, the Schwarzenegger campaign for California Governor, and ran John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008. Schmidt was the Vice Chair at Edelman PR and a political analyst for MSNBC. A founding member of the Lincoln Project, a group founded to campaign against Donald Trump, Schmidt officially left the Republican party in 2018 saying, “Today’s GOP has become a danger to our democracy and our values. The Republican Party is an organized conspiracy for the purposes of maintaining power for self-interest, and the self-interest of its donor class. The right to vote in America is under attack. It is a frustrating time. Most of us are losing our minds with the lack of accountability for Trump & Co. We’re mad at the Democrats for not moving faster and doing more. We’re mad at the DOJ for seemingly doing nothing. We’re mad that it feels like we’re the only ones calling for justice and we want results like, yesterday. But, as Teri Kanefield says, “It’s important we don’t fight autocracy with autocracy” because “if we fight like them, we will end up like them” and then our democracy will be well and truly gone.
