Saving the Country from Stupid. A PG:CC with Michael Steele
The mounting chaos surrounding the Republican presidential primary makes you wonder what we’re doing here. To figure it out, we have a conversation with Micheal Steele, former Chair of RNC, and someone who knows this party well. Despite the fact that MAGA keeps trying to get rid of him, he believes in his party. The question is, how do we stop the extremism? How do we, as Michael says, “save ourselves from stupid?” DON’T FORGET that you can now SUBSCRIBE to PoliticsGirl Premium to get this podcast ad free and support us as we continue to bring you the best content possible. How Did Conservatism Become So Toxic? A PG:CC with Dara Starr Tucker
The Republican Party of today has taken a turn, a turn from traditional “conservative” values into something far more odious and, as our guest, Dara Starr Tucker, would say, far more toxic. As a popular influencer in social commentary Dara is launching a new project to explore this rise of toxicity. Where it comes from, what it’s based in, and hopefully, if we can better understand it, how we can beat it. With mainstream media more and more beholden to their corporate owners, and the story those owners want to tell, those of us who want the truth are increasingly dependent on independent voices to keep us in the know. Dara Starr Tucker is one of those voices I really believe is worth listening to. Happy 4th of July! & “Ask Me Anything” Sneak Peak
Today’s episode is a sneak peak of what the PoliticsGirl Premium subscribers will have access to with our first Ask Me Anything episode in which Political Warriors & Champions have the opportunity to write in questions that I’ll answer directly as bonus content. Today’s Questions: Knowing what you know about American politics, how can you be positive about America’s future? How do we reach the people who only consume right-wing media? With a quarter to a third of the country giving up on democracy, how do we begin to reduce that number? Do you think Biden should be the nominee? Isn’t he just too old? We wanted to give everyone a chance to hear some of the perks we’ll be offering to our premium subscribers, so if you’d like to have access to the AMA content in the future, and for the ability to ask questions yourself, please consider becoming a PoliticsGirl premium subscriber at PoliticsGirl.com/premium to sign up for one of our subscription packages. A Better Way to Win with Yasmin Radjy
How many emails a day do you get from people claiming if you don’t send money immediately democracy will die and it’ll be all your fault? How many texts do you get from people you’ve never heard of because you gave your information to someone at sometime and now everyone has your number? How many campaigns have you donated to that either lost by 20 points or won by 20 points? What are we doing here?? We want to help, but also, this is ridiculous! There has to be a better way. Join me and Swing Left Executive Director Yasmin Radjy as we talk about making it as easy as possible for everyone to have a maximum impact on elections with the least amount of drama. It’s inspirational. It’s action based and we talk about the 3 next elections you NEED to be paying attention to. There are more of us who believe in democracy, civil rights and fairness than those who would take it away. We just can’t let them get the jump on us. This is where we start. Trump Indictments: PG:CC with Thom Hartmann
Go to dave.com/politicsgirl to sign up for an ExtraCash account and get up to $500 instantly! Terms: dave.com/legal Join the brilliant Thom Hartmann and I as we break down the most recent Trump indictment and discuss how the documents he had, and lied about having, are most likely just the tip of the iceberg. Understand where we stand with this case and how this case fits into the context of previous Republican presidents. Donald Trump is often treated like an anomaly, some kind of aberration but, as Thom argues in his writing, he’s hardly our first criminal president and perhaps, if there had be ramifications for those who came before, we might not find ourselves in the place we’re in now. To be honest, researching this episode blew my mind. I can’t believe how much we don’t know about what certain presidents have done in the past to gain power and stay in power. It’s no wonder Trump’s so upset. Everyone else got away with breaking the law, why not him? The Rise of Christian Nationalism
Christian nationalists believe that America is defined by Christianity, and the government should be taking active steps to keep it that way. This is completely antithetical to how our nation was actually set up, but they now have their hands in so many pots - from education, to voting, to human rights - and are backed by such an large amount of dark money, with seemingly endless connections, that the bottom line is if we don’t wake up to the danger of this movement, which in many ways runs parallel with the white nationalist moment and, these days MAGA Republicans, then we’re going to wake up in the near future to realized we live in some version of a Christian autocratic theocracy where our laws, lifestyles, even our morality is dictated by a select few, and the only choices we’ll have left will be conform or suffer. And if that sounds like the opposite of the freedom and liberty America is supposed to stand for, it’s because it is. WTF Does the Constitution Actually Say? PART II : A conversation with Ben Sheehan
Today’s pod is a Candid Conversation with return guest, former award-winning executive producer at Funny or Die and author of “OMG WTF Does the Constitution Actually Say?” Ben Sheehan. Ben has written a modern day breakdown of our founding documents that explains everything we never learned in school in an easily digestible book filled with humor. In his previous episode we discussed the first 12 Amendments, the first 10 which we call the Bill of Rights and the last two which were the amendments ratified prior to the Civil War. This time we take a look at America 2.0 post civil war and Amendment 13-27 with a special focus on the very ‘of the moment’ 14th Amendment. This is a fun way to learn what we should probably already know with a bunch of context mixed in. AND DON’T FORGET: Please consider subscribing to PoliticsGirl Premium! Who Are You Going To Be In This Moment: A Conversation with Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson
Join us for a truly amazing conversation with Jocelyn Benson who challenges us to ask who we’re going to be at this moment in history. Are we going to be passive as our voices are silenced and our will is ignored, or are we going to stand up and say not today through our attitude, our efforts and yes, our vote. Secretary Benson reminds us that democracy is a team sport and while the Secretaries of State might be the referees, we all have a part to play. America is at a real crossroads and, realistically, we are so close to losing it all, but we’re also so close to the working, pluralistic, multicultural democracy that no country in the world has ever been able to accomplish, but we actually could. We simply need to decide to walk the right way. How Can I Help: A Conversation with Mathew Littman
I want everyone feeling discouraged to know that there are people working behind the scenes every day to make this country a better, safer and more democratic place. One of those unsung heroes is Mathew Littman, who is the Executive Director of 97Percent, bipartisan group who support the Second Amendment and responsible gun ownership, and the leader of The Working Group which brings the entertainment industry together with the most well-known leaders in politics, news, and non-profits to seek solutions to our country’s biggest problems. I think the thing to remember is just because we don’t see the efforts people are taking, we need to know that there really are thousands, tens of thousands, of people across this country fighting the good fight, and I want you to start thinking how you can be a part of getting America back on track. Gen-Z Rising: Democracy’s New Dawn with Victor Shi
The youth of America have the opportunity to truly change the state of politics, and they’re starting to realize it. They don’t want to be told what they can read, or say, or who to love. They don’t want to be shot in their schools or live on a dying planet. Quite frankly, the majority of the country’s youth have no interest in making America great AGAIN. They seek to create something better. Which is why those who would prefer we go back are trying so hard to shut them down. Today we talk with GenZ activist and Strategy Director for Voters of Tomorrow, Victor Shi about how to best understand and connect with America’s youth to best support and understand them as they come into their power and hopefully save us from ourselves. Michigan: The Anti-Florida
A couple weeks ago we did a pod on Florida and the chaos DeSantis is inflicting on his state. So today we’re doing a counter piece on what a state looks like when a government works for, and listens to, it’s people, and, as far as I’m concerned, there’s no state that balances the scales better with Florida than Michigan. While Florida is all top down government control, Michigan has dedicated itself to listening to, and honoring the will of the voters. So today we’re going to talk about Michigan. To give you a sense of what’s possible when government reflects what the people, and not just what the government, wants. As Salon magazine recently wrote, “Michigan offers us real hope. A roadmap back to democracy and common sense”. And, I can’t think of anything we all need more than a little hope. The right place, at the right time, doing the right thing: a conversation with Laphonza Butler
Every day we hear about a new lawsuit, a new tragedy, a new pregnancy horror story. The unnecessary pain and suffering brought about by this onslaught of backward, archaic laws forced upon us by Republican lawmakers who believe they know better than doctors, scientists and the pregnant people themselves. After having a fundamental human right stripped from us with the reversal of Roe, women, and their allies around the country, have mobilized with the understanding that our basic human freedoms are at stake. This isn’t just about bodily autonomy, or the lives of pregnant people, it’s about human rights. Join me and Laphonza Butler, the President of Emily’s List, the powerful and influential political action committee dedicated to electing pro-choice women into office as we discuss where we are in America and how their mission has never been more essential to the future of our democracy. Stop The Bad Laws!: A Conversation with Melissa Walker from The States Project
You only have to look around the country right now to see the power state legislatures have over almost every part of our lives. While the 10th Amendment is a check on the power of the federal government, it gives state leadership an almost infinite amount of power, and in the wrong hands, this unchecked influence has been an absolute disaster for human rights, civil rights and democracy. For 40 years, while Republicans invested billions of dollars and focused energy into building and holding state governing majorities Democrats focused the majority of their attention and money on national races and, while it seemed like things were progressing around the country, individual states were actually putting the pieces in place for regressive laws that would take us back. This stops today. You wanna fight back? We do it at the state level and the States Project tells us how. WTF Does the Constitution Actually Say? A conversation with Ben Sheehan
Today’s pod is a Candid Conversation with former award-winning executive producer at Funny or Die and author of OMG WTF Does the Constitution Actually Say? Ben has written a book that is essentially a modern day breakdown of our founding documents that explains all the things we never properly learned in school in an easily digestible book filled with humor. Now, obviously it would take more than one podcast to talk about the entire constitution, so today we’re going to focus on the first 12 Amendments which are the amendments that were ratified prior to the Civil War with the first 10 being what we know as the Bill of Rights. We Need to Talk About Florida
Two years ago I did a rant about how the Republicans were beta testing fascism in Florida. I compared Ron DeSantis to one of those raptors in Jurassic Park. The ones who test the fence for weakness, and now if you look at what’s happening in Florida, you can see they’ve found a fair amount of weaknesses in democracy’s fence. It’s not woke that’s dying in Florida, it’s freedom. This podcast is the summation of the legislation, the behavior, and the leadership that is making Florida the test ground for what Republicans plan to unleash on the nation. America or Extremism? A conversation with Billy Ray
Today’s pod is a Candid Conversation with Oscar nominated screenwriter and accidental political guru Billy Ray. Billy makes his living in Hollywood, but transfers those skills to Washington, to consult and speech write for many of the Democrats you know who are making a splash. I’m having Billy on because we share the mission of trying to reimagine how Democrats message. We want to see those who believe in democracy and liberal values fired up and successful. This isn’t just about beating a dangerous alternative, but truly attempting to make this country what it could be. Democrats are not known for being great at messaging, and we need to get out of the trap of being defensive when we really should be on offense. This is a great conversation for anyone who cares about finding our way out of this crisis in American history and supporting those who would lead us toward a brighter future. Weaponized Motherhood: The Rise of Mom’s For Liberty with Julie Kohler
Today’s pod is a Candid Conversation with acclaimed writer Julie Kohler, host of award winning White Picket Fence podcast which focuses on how suburban women have become some of the most contested political actors. Over three seasons, the podcast has examined the social disruptions that have pushed a political realignment among women. I’m having Julie on today to discuss how motherhood itself is being weaponized for political gain. In the name of “protecting children” and “parental rights” this particular group has been manipulated to advance the darkest of political agendas. You can see the efforts of this work on our school boards, with school choice, anti-CRT laws and anti-LGBTQ laws. It’s the ugly underbelly of what should be a positive group looking out for what’s best for children but who are, in reality, using their seemingly innocent identity to truly undermine people’s rights. Hope for the Homeless: Big City Leadership with LA Mayor Karen Bass
Today’s pod is a Candid Conversation with the Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass. On day one the newly elected mayor declared a State of Emergency in LA to deal with the crisis of the unhoused, and 100 days in she’s tackling the problem with the urgency it deserves, and the heart and humility of a new kind of leader. So far the program, which is aligning every level of government, is truly making a difference, and if the second biggest city in America can pull it off, these are programs that can be rolled out across the country. Successful policies are contagious. Whether those are negative policies like abortion bans or trans bans, or positive programs like dealing with homelessness or expanded school lunch programs, once they’re working they can spread. That’s why it’s essential we put the right leaders, with the right values, in positions of power. Start Early: Win Big…Road to 24 with Congressman Ruben Gallego
Today’s pod is part of a new series called Road to 24 where we will deal with the issues, organizations and candidates who are working to push our country in the direction of democracy and away from the encroaching threat of authoritarianism. This series will include action items to help keep our country on a progressive path and away from the regressive road many would force us down. Today’s guest is Congressman Ruben Gallego, the Democrat running to replace the newly independent Kyrsten Sinema in the US Senate. With such a slim majority, losing Arizona isn’t an option, and with Democrats defending twice as many Senate seats as Republicans in 24, protecting our slim majority hinges on his state. I’m having Ruben on early because Sinema hasn’t publicly declared if she’s running, and I’d like to make him such a viable candidate, that she starts thinking maybe it’s not in her best interest to even run. Ruben is a Marine combat vet, a 5 term Congressman and a strong latino contender who can connect with the working class American and represent the freedom, fairness and values of the Democratic party. Ukraine: One Year Later
For the most part, the war in Ukraine is not really on people’s radar anymore. It sits somewhere in the periphery, far away and confusing. It doesn't affect many of us directly so we’ve kinda checked out, which leaves us susceptible to misinformation, lies and even Russian propaganda. But what’s happening with this war isn’t just about what happens to the good people of Ukraine, it’s about what happens to our world. Who wins this war will set the tone for our entire geopolitical landscape. Will we live on a planet where “might means right” and an autocratic country can simply invade a democracy, destroy their economy and commit genocide and we do nothing? Or do we live in a world where there are consequences for this kind of horror? Is democracy strong enough to prevail or are we heading to a future where dictators simply take what they want? American Origin Stories…PG:CC with Matthew Cooke

Save democracy: Free Wisconsin with WisDem Chair, Ben Wikler
The Wisconsin Supreme Court election on April 4th is THE most important election of 2023. This election will decide everything from if abortion is outlawed in the state, to if the gerrymander that has turned Wisconsin into a one party state is allowed to stand, to whether this ultimate swing state is allowed to send electors to Washington who didn’t win the popular vote, potentially swinging the 2024 Presidential Election to Republicans even if the Democrats win. Democracy itself is literally on the line with this election, not just in Wisconsin but for the entire nation. To get you fired up and passionate about this game changing moment in time, I’m talking to Ben Wikler, Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin who not only knows everything about Wisconsin politics, but he knows how to win even when it seems the game is rigged against him. If you want to live in a country with a functioning democracy, there is nothing more important for you to be paying attention to right now that this one special election. Hope for the Planet…PG:CC with Ali Zaidi
Today we are joined by National Climate Advisor, Ali Zaidi, who leads the White House Climate Policy Office to talk about all the positive climate initiatives we can look forward to thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act. This legislation isn’t one step forward, it’s a giant leap into the future, and not just good for the planet, but good for our pocketbooks. For too long people have believed that the choice comes down to the planet OR the economy, but that’s not the case. Helping the environment, securing our future on this planet, can also be an absolute boon to our country's financial health, and it sets America once again on the path to be a world leader in innovation and opportunity. As we discover in this conversation, the story of the climate doesn’t have to be one of doom & gloom, but can really be one of possibility & hope. As Ali says, “This isn’t theoretical. The IRA matters IRL.” It’s not just policy. It’s our future. How the Republican Party Went Crazy…PG:CC with David Corn
Today we are joined by American political journalist and author, David Corn. David is the Washington DC bureau chief for Mother Jones Magazine, a major cable news commentator, analyst for MSNBC, and best-selling author of a slew of books about American politics including the one we’ll be discussing today “American Psychosis: A Historical Investigation of How the Republican Party Went Crazy”. According to David’s research, the insanity currently going on with the GOP is not so much a departure from the norms, as a logical conclusion of an established pattern. Since the 1950’s, the Republicans have knowingly encouraged and exploited extremism, bigotry, and paranoia to retain or gain power. As one review put it, “American Psychosis is a sobering look at the ideological destruction, born of cynicism and opportunism, of a once principled party.” Guest social: David Corn Books: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=david+corn+books&i=audible&crid=1K6H03Z77Z53C&sprefix=david+corn+book%2Caudible%2C145&ref=nb_sb_noss_2 Our Land Newsletter: https://www.motherjones.com/topics/our-land/ Twitter: @DavidCornDC Please RATE and SUBSCRIBE so we can grow the show, open the dialogue, and inspire change moving forward! Justice, the Law & the Battle to Save America…PG:CC with Dahlia Lithwick
We are joined today by Dahlia Lithwick, the brilliant award winning journalist who’s been writing about the Supreme Court for over 20 years, to get her take on where this increasingly compromised court is taking us and what we can do if we don’t want to go. Author of “Lady Justice: Women, the Law and the Battle to Save America” Lithwick reminds us that for every big name hero we hope will save us, there are 100 unnamed people working behind the scenes making a difference, and we can be one of them. It’s tempting to see everything through the lens of politics in America, but we also have to look at it through the lens of the law, of organization and of inspiration. The Supreme Court clearly needs reform, our electoral system needs reimagining, our voting rights require protection, and everyone should choosing something to focus on to make it happen. The Weaponization of American Christianity…PG:CC with Professor Anthea Butler
Author of “White Evangelical Racism: The Politics of Morality in America” Professor Anthea Butler is one of the foremost experts on Christian nationalism. We discuss how evangelical racism, propelled by the benefits of whiteness, is attempting to take over our government and our country. That Christianity is being systematically weaponized in a quest for power and control, and that Christian nationalism, the kind we see in places like Hungary, with its top down control and “traditional values”, is not only on the rise in America but already in positions of the highest power. This conversation is a reminder for all of us, who believe in a true multi-cultural, pluralistic democracy with freedom and justice for ALL, that we must insist on the separation of church and state and recognize that without our efforts, we will end up losing a war we didn’t even know we were in. A Case for Optimism…PG:CC with White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre
It’s hard not to be cynical about American politics and the American experiment with all that’s going on, but the truth of the matter is we have tremendous leadership right now. The country is doing extremely well. Legislation that became law over the past two years is set to become tangible reality in the next two. Yes, we are looking at an increasingly undemocratic Republican Party who can’t even compromise with itself long enough to get their speaker elected, but we’re also looking at competent, fresh new leadership to counter them, along with new factories, new jobs, new infrastructure. We’re looking at lower drug prices and major corporations paying taxes for the first time. We’re going to have universal broadband for all our citizens, gun legislation and climate protections. Yes, it’ll be an uphill battle to fight back these authoritarian extremists, especially since they now have power, but that’s just hard, not impossible, and with the right leadership and the right attitude, I think we got this. Democracy Needs a Hero…A PG:CC with Marc Elias
This is our last episode before the break, and I can’t imagine closing out the year without a dedicated conversation about democracy, so today’s pod is a Candid Conversation with democracy’s super lawyer Marc Elias. Marc is an American Democratic Party elections lawyer who served as general counsel for the Hillary Clinton and John Kerry presidential campaigns, and is the founder of the Elias Law Group who oversaw the state by state response to the 60+ Trump campaign lawsuits contesting the 2020 presidential election, where he won all but one minor case, which was later overturned in his favor. It is Marc and the Elias Group who, as the Republicans and their allies turn their attention to using litigation as a weapon against democracy, have been at the front line fighting back. This is a wonderful and inspiring episode with a wonderful and inspiring man. I hope you enjoy it. Happy Holidays! See you in the New Year! Did you Know…A PG:CC with Dr. Allison Gill
As we go into the holiday season, join me and the amazing Dr. Allison Gill, founder and CEO of MSW Media as we discuss where we are in America right now, so we’re able to go into our seasonal gatherings armed with the facts. Allison is the host of the, now infamous, Mueller She Wrote podcast, which broke down the minutia of the Mueller investigation and ended up getting her fired from her job at the Department of Veteran Affairs because the truth made President Trump mad. She’s the co-host of Cleanup on Aisle 45, where she and Andrew Torrez report on the Justice Department & Intelligence Agencies as they rebuild after the damage caused by the Trump Administration. She’s the host of the Daily Beans, the amazing daily news podcast, and her newest show Jack just launched, where she and former Deputy Director of the FBI, Andrew McCabe, document the actions of the new special council Jack Smith and his ongoing DOJ investigations into Trump’s many crimes. Pick a Side - PG:CC with Thomas Zimmer
Join me and brilliant Georgetown history professor, author of Democracy Americana and host of the ’Is This Democracy’ podcast as we discuss where democracy is in America post the 2022 midterms. The Declaration of Independence might talk about a country where all men are created equal, but if we’re honest with ourselves, that’s not what everyone wants. History tells us there are those, an entire party in fact, who’d prefer to have a certain group in charge and know they don’t need the majority to achieve it. They simply need to convince enough people in the center that their worldview is better than what the left is offering and we could find ourselves in permanent minority rule. The truth of the matter is, our country is incredibly divided, and it’s up to us, every single one of us, to decide which way we want to go. There’s no middle ground left, no more excuses to be made, people must choose. There are a lot of unsung heroes of the Trump presidency and many of them are faceless bureaucrats, military, even some civilians, who did everything they could to help preserve democracy during the greatest constitutional crisis the country has faced since the civil war. So That Went Well, PG:CC with White House Chief of Staff, Ron Klain
Ron Klain joins us for the post-midterm wrap up. Though not all the results are in, we do know that Democrats will hold the Senate, no election deniers will be in charge of elections, that Democrats have gained governorships and made headway in state houses and the power of hate and division might be on the wain. However, it shakes out, the midterms were a good day for democracy. We might be in for a contentious 2 years, but then again, aren’t we used to that by now? The bottom line is people took this election as their opportunity to register their distaste for extremism, election denialism and political violence. They came out to vote for human rights and bodily autonomy and a properly functioning government. If the country is sick, these elections feels a bit like a fever break. Are we out of the woods? Not by a long shot, but we live to fight another day and should be damn proud of our efforts. Candidate Conversations with AG Candidates Jen Jordan for Georgia and Rochelle Garza for Texas
Today’s episode is the last in the series of Candidate Conversations leading up to the midterms, where we talk to candidates who might not be getting the attention they need but have a real chance of winning with the right amount of attention. Today’s we talk to two amazing Democratic candidates for Attorney General, Jen Jordan for Georgia and Rochelle Garza for Texas. The Attorney General is the state’s top prosecutor meant to represent the public interest at the state level. An AG has the power to hold politicians accountable, to promote justice and equality and to protect our democracy. This is not a job that should go to just anyone. It certainly isn’t a job that should go to criminals and party shills, which is exactly who these women are running against. The difference between Jen & Rochelle and their opponents is the difference between women with rights and women without rights, the difference between votes that count and votes that don’t count, and the difference between the law that looks out for the people, and the the law that protects the powerful. AG is a position you should know, and these are candidates you should know about. Electing these women would make such a tremendous difference to the state, but also to the rule of law across the nation. We just need to get them across the finish line. The Rise of Autocracy Redux
As the midterms approach, I thought we’d revisit what’s at stake by re-upping a podcast from January 2022 about the rise of the Autocratic movements around the world and how one party in America seems more than willing to join their club. This is the time we need a resurgence of democracy, not only at home but around the world, or those who would seek to sink the west will finally succeed, and the values and human rights we take for granted will be a thing of the past. Stick with me, so you know where we are and we can walk together in a better direction. I’m telling you this not to upset you, but to prepare you. We have to accept the reality of the problem if we’re going to muster the courage to solve the problem. We will either be the heroes of democracy or the victims of its demise. The choice is ours. 1/6 Committee: What Comes Next? PG:CC with Congressman Jamie Raskin
Today’s podcast is a candid conversation with Congressman Jamie Raskin,Democratic member of the House Select committee on the January 6th attack on the US Capitol, which recently resumed with its 9th, and possibly last, public hearing. Now that we know that a sitting president and his enablers engaged in a multi-strategy, calculated attempt to stay in power against the will of the people, and that this bid at a self coup was supported by people from the lowest of the low, like white supremest militant groups, to the very highest levels of society, including government officials and law enforcement, what do we do? What do we do with the people who still believe the purposeful lie that the election was stolen, or worse, the Republican representatives who could win massive power and usurp democracy running on that lie? What do we do with the anger and unrest that allowed Trump to turn American citizens into a mob who attacked their own Capitol, and what do we do with the simmering fury that still prevails in a society filled with lies and propaganda? Candidate Conversations with Jeff Ettinger, Democratic Congressional candidate for Minnesota’s 1st District
Today is one of our bonus pods leading to the midterms to bring attention to races across the country that are incredibly important, winnable and getting basically no press. Today I’m thrilled to be talking to Democratic Congressional candidate for Minnesota’s 1st District, Jeff Ettinger. Jeff is the previous CEO of the Minnesota’s meat packing giant Hormel Foods, the leader of Hormel’s foundation, a professor of business at the local university and the Democrats chance of flipping a red seat blue right after the special election in August chose to keep it red. Jeff is the the perfect example of how the Democratic Party, unlike its opponent, is not a monolith. That we have many different voices brought together by our shared set of values. We might have different ways of looking at business or tax rates, but at the end of the day we believe in democracy, human rights and the importance of the will of the American people. Jeff will work for Minnesota, his opponent will work for Republican leadership and is happy to just be one more vote for the extremist faction of what used to be the Republican Party. We can win this seat, but we can also show people that the Democrats are not just the socialist, communist monsters they make us out to be. If we were, Jeff wouldn’t be running. Today’s episode is part of the Candidate Conversation series leading up to the midterms, where we talk to candidates from across the country who might not be getting the attention they need, to win the races they could absolutely win. Today’s we talk to two amazing gubernatorial candidates, Chris Jones for Arkansas and Nan Whaley for Ohio. Both candidates are pro-choice, pro-democracy, out of the box thinkers who are ready to lead. Chris is the most accomplished and extraordinary candidate running against darling of MAGA world Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Nan is the wildly accomplished former Mayor of Dayton running to clear up Ohio against anti-choice, pro-gun, corruption riddled incumbent Mike DeWine. These are candidates you should know about, and races Democrats should care about. We can compete in these states. We have the talent. Let’s give them the money and the voice! Candidate Conversations with Lt. Col. Brian Bengs, Democratic candidate for Senator for South Dakota
Today’s our first extra pod leading up to the midterms and I’m thrilled to have it be with Senatorial candidate for South Dakota Brian Bengs. And you might think, a Democrat in South Dakota? Whaaaat? But, yes, we have to stop ceding rural territories and states to Republicans. The heartland used to be a stronghold for the Democrats, but there’s been a growing, and perhaps self fulfilling, belief that the Democratic Party can’t compete in rural America, and that’s just not true. South Dakota might be a red state, but Brian, JAG lawyer, professor and career veteran of both the US Navy & the Air Force is truly resonating with the people of his state. Polling and surveys shows that when voters are presented with head to head profiles between Bengs & current Senator John Thune, Bengs wins every time. We just need to give him the support to make sure people see him as a real contender. What’s at Stake November 8th - PG:CC with NARAL: Pro-Choice America’s Mini Timmaraju
Today’s podcast is a candid conversation with Mini Timmaraju, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America, here to remind us what is at stake in the midterm elections, not just for reproductive freedoms and rights of women in this country, but the very foundation of freedom and democracy itself. Mini joined NARAL having worked for the Biden-Harris Administration, served as the National Women’s Vote Director for the Hillary Clinton campaign, and played many essential roles at Planned Parenthood. Mini has over 20 years experience leading all levels of political campaigns and advocacy efforts around reproductive rights, gender and racial justice so she knows what’s on the line on November 8th. Plus, she’s flippin’ marvelous. You’ll just love her and feel very relieved she’s in charge of keeping our representatives accountable in congress. Today’s episode is part of the Candidate Conversation series leading up to the midterms, where we talk to candidates from across the country whose victories are absolutely essential to the success of American democracy. Today’s podcast will be with 2 Democratic candidates running for the 3rd districts of their states. Brad Pfaff from Wisconsin and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez from Washington. Both candidates have deep ties to their rural communities and are running against MAGA ringers brought into their districts, not to represent the people, but to represent the worst of Republican extremism. These two congressional races are must wins. Brad to keep a seat blue, and Marie to flip one. This podcast is not only worth your time, but these candidates are worth your support. The Good Karen PG:CC with LA Mayoral Candidate Congresswoman Karen Bass
Today’s podcast is a conversation with Karen Bass, Congresswoman for California’s 37th district, former California assemblywoman, and current candidate for Mayor of Los Angeles. And you might think, “Ok I don’t live in Los Angeles so why should I care?” You should care because Los Angeles is the second biggest city in the US, and California is the state with the largest population. So, the things that happen here, end up being the beta test for things that happen across the country. What Karen Bassimplements in Los Angeles, for homelessness or crime, if successful, will no doubt find their way to other cities and states across the nation, and could be the bellwether for federal legislation. You should also care because Karen is running against a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The newest way Republicans are trying to undermine the electorate is to trick them into voting for someone who presents themselves as one thing but is actually another. Rick Caruso is that candidate, a lifelong Republican billionaire who switched his party affiliation to Democrat just 3 weeks before declaring his candidacy for mayor. He’s already spent $60 million dollars of his own money trying to buy his way into the job. This is something as an electorate we should not only be aware of, but watch out for in other places. Our democracy should not be for sale and we should be putting people in positions of power who want to serve the people not enrich themselves. We went to the White House!! PG:CC with Brett & Jordy Meiselas
For a political nerd like me being invited to the White House is like going to the Super Bowl. I was thrilled to be there, but even more excited to see the genuine passion the Biden Administration has for the country and its people. This is why I do what I do. Today’s pod is a Candid Conversation with two of the three founders of the Meidas Media Network, Brett & Jordy Meiselas, who were also at the White House this week to celebrate and discuss the successes of the Inflation Reduction Act with other social media influencers. This was an impressive group of people listening to an impressive group of people and if we take anything away from this experience, it’s that the future of media is going to look quite different than the past, this Administration is the real deal, and it’s essential we keep them, and their party, in power. Both women are running in flippable districts where there is currently a Republican incumbent, and with the right support both candidates can, and will, turn these seats blue. Absolutely worth the listen and definitely worth the support. We talk about way more than just their districts. It’s a conversation about democracy, human rights and what it means to be an American representative. Reproductive Freedom - PG:CC with Planned Parenthood’s Alexis McGill Johnson
Today’s podcast is a candid conversation with Alexis McGill Johnson, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood. We are living at volatile time in American history. One entire party is hellbent on taking us backward into the worst parts of our country’s past filled with racism, homophobia, inequality and the subjugation of women. Since the reversal of Roe v. Wade, every day is a new affront to the value of women and those who require reproductive rights in our society. Every day comes with a fresh new story of archaic, backward laws and the trauma of the real people who have to live under these laws. Being female in America has never been easy, but with THIS Republican Party and THIS supreme court our lives, and the lives of those who can give birth, have become the newest cannon fodder in the culture wars. Union Strong! PG:CC with Mike Monroe
Today’s podcast is a candid conversation with Mike Monroe, the Chief of Staff to North America’s Building Trades Unions, a labor organization representing more than 3 million construction workers, composed of 14 national and international unions. Prior to joining NABTU, Mike served as the Political Director for Labor on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 Presidential Campaign, and is a passionate and successful advocate for the Labor Movement in America. The pandemic really opened our eyes to the essential nature of the workers of America, and how great the divide is between those who own the corporations and those who work for them. However, with the combined efforts of unions to represent the people, and a government that respects and supports the importance of unions, we can truly begin to reverse the ever widening gap between the “haves” and the “have nots” in this country. America doesn’t need to be like this. We must grow our middle class again, and to do that we need to look to the power of organized labor and the resurgence of the respect for the American worker. Justice Begins - PG: CC with Teri Kanefield
When we last had Teri Kanefield on the show she was reminding us that just because we weren’t seeing the results we wanted didn’t mean the wheels of justice weren’t turning. People wanted so badly for the DOJ to tell us they were investigating Trump, for Trump to be arrested, for RESULTS, but Teri has always believed that the fact that we were seeing so little, was good news for the health of the rule of law. She’s always stressed how important it is to not rush the process or abandon the rules simply because we wanted to. That one party has made it very clear they’re ready to abandon democracy and the rule of law and Teri has been equally clear we shouldn’t help them do that by abandoning the rule of law ourselves. 5 months later, after the search of Mar-a-lago we can see she was right when so many others were wrong. That Merrick Garland has been working diligently all this time and that justice might be finally on its way.
