PES 040: Zack Hanni
My guest is Zack Hanni, audio engineer and owner of Soma Recording Studios. He engineers/produces music so it was nice to talk with him about some of the production processes and tricks he uses. Fyi, he majored in Audio Production and minored in Entertainment Technology at Middle Tennessee State University. We discussed several topics in great depth: (listen to the audio for the FULL experience.....the shownotes for this show are just the tip of the iceberg ;) Impedance (Hi-Z and Lo-Z, mic's and instruments) EQ (addressing some common issues) Compression (Multiband, including release times, auto-release and alternatives to compression) Introducing distortion to add some high frequency presence Zack's typical vocal processing chain: EQ w/ hi pass filter at 80-150 Hz Light Compression Via a Send to a return track: EQ Heavy and harsh Compression Overdrive Limiter Presonus FaderPort - has a single motorized fader Izotope Nectar - chorus, pitching, and a lot more Thanks for sharing so many insights with us, Zack! PES 039: The Return of Max Flight
My guest (for his 2nd appearance) is Max Flight, host of Airplane Geeks Podcast, co-host and producer of The UAV Digest and the #PaxEx Podcast. Max continues to amp up his production quality, equipment and workflow so I wanted to speak with him about his new toys and plugins. (check out his first appearance here) We covered: How Max and I eliminated some slight distortion from his signal just before recording this session Aston Microphones "Spirit" (A 20% coupon helped. Max likes it, though it's obviously different than his Heil PR40 in many ways. Certainly requires different EQ - mostly a 3 or 4db bump around 4K, to his ear) Warm Audio WA12 mic pre (Max saw it at a Guitar Center, "Look honey, it's orange!" and Googled the reviews, so he bought it at a really good price) Waves DeBreath plugin Spitfish de-esser (one of his guests on Airplane Geeks had a huge sibilance problem) Thanks again, Max! FYI, follow Max on Twitter @MaxFlight DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks. Thanks for listening! PES 038: Garth Humphreys
My guest is Garth Humphreys, host and producer of Audio Pizza, iBlindTech and Aussie Mac Zone. Garth lives in Australia and we had a fun session. We discussed his equipment and workflow, including: Rode NT-1 Amadeus Pro Audio Hijack Pro FX Chains on individual tracks as well as the main mix bus Auphonic to append and prepend music, intro, etc. Editing tips We also covered 3 handy functions in Reaper (they are also possible in most other DAW's): Allows for 3 states of ripple editing (we cover all 3) SWS/BR: Normalize loudness of selected tracks to -23 LUFS Item: Auto trim/split items (remove silence) One more interesting tidbit - when Garth sent me his local recording he sent it in FLAC format (Free Lossless Audio Codec). Digital audio compressed by FLAC's algorithm can typically be reduced to 50–60% of its original size and decompress to an identical copy of the original audio data. It's handy for sharing large audio files as long as the receiving person has the ability to decompress the file back into a WAV file, for instance. (many software programs can do this) Thanks for all the great info you shared, Garth! And for having a fun time with me on the show ;) DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks. Thanks for listening! PES 037: The Wisdom of Audio Processing
Announcement: We will be taking a break for the holidays, so after this episode we will be back on Jan. 5th. Links mentioned in this episode: Podfest Multimedia Expo in Orlando, Florida from Feb. 23-25, 2017 The Podcasting Course in Lexington, Kentucky from April 21-22, 2017 Podcast Gear Group (Facebook group led by the incomparable Marc Johanssen) First I mention and explain what I'm using to record this episode - a Shure SM7B right into my Mackie mixer - no processing before recording, which is different than my normal setup at home. With regards to peaking/distorting, setting my recording level when the mic is "raw to tape" is much more difficult than when I'm using a compressor before recording. Then I discuss these 4 topics: 1. The Wisdom of Audio Processing Silk mode on my Neve Portico II - RED/BLUE - Tweaking my EQ & Compression on my new RE20 Dbx 286s "Enhancer" section - LF Detail, HF Detail Using a multiband compressor on a voice - compressing the low end as well as boosting the level of that low end 2. Debrief Last Week's Episode Production Too much compression, especially with a reverby room Ralph & Carol Lynn were very close to their mic's Using gates to tape Auphonic Multitrack crossgate function 3. Matching/Balancing the Sound of Voices Within Episodes The Real Brian - had to remove lots of low end to match Skype and phone calls 4. Upgrading Your Equipment Over the Holidays Not in terms of good deals, but strategy For deals and info visit Podcast Gear Group on Facebook Mike Michalowicz upgrading to 4 mic inputs - Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 to 18i8. (He's the host of the Profit First Podcast) Enjoy a wonderful Holiday season! Be with you again on Jan. 5th ;) And be sure to send me pics of your new gear!!! My guest is Scott Weingart, producer and host of The EMCrit Podcast, as well as a physician (MD, FCCM) and Editor-in-Chief of EMCrit. Scott is not your average podcast producer and we really learned a lot from him about his equipment, workflow and processing. I also got to tell a cool story about a sweet monitoring trick I learned from the immortal audio engineer Andy Wallace from his sessions with (also immortal) singer/songwriter Jeff Buckley at Soundtrack in NYC in 1994. Additionally, I spell out one elaborate method of taming nasty "P's" popping after they've been recorded. Here's some of what Scott and I discussed: Shure 87A microphone Sound Devices USB interface The usefulness of a dog clicker! PES 025: Liza Miller
Have you ever recorded a podcast with 16 people in one room - all on the show simultaneously?!?! Liza Miller has. My guest is Liza Miller, host and producer of the Motorcycles & Misfits podcast. She used to do live sound in clubs, many moons ago, and now she is having a blast with so many friends doing Motorcycles & Misfits. Btw, she found a pretty solid, inexpensive purchase: 3 Behringer XM1800S microphones for $40! When you have 12 mic's open in a room you have to keep costs down ;) Special note: After the outro music, she gives me a microphone challenge - she uses 2 different inexpensive mic's and asks me which one I like better. Listen to the very end to hear if I chose the $30 mic or the $13 mic! We also discussed: Behringer XM8500 microphone Shock mount mic clips Mackie 1642 VLZ Pro Alesis 3630 dual channel compressor Power conditioner Behringer U-control audio interface Adobe Audition HA-400 headphones Soundbooth program Tascam DR-11G (recorder for backups and remote recordings) Thank you for having so much fun with us, Liza! PES 023: Chris Saunders
My guest is Chris Saunders, host of Return to Camp Blood - a Friday the 13th fan podcast. Chris has a very practical and low cost setup, and he makes the most of it! (Btw, his show is super niche in that they only talk about Friday the 13th movies...lol) He produces his show from start to finish and regularly has 2-3 other co-hosts who are all in different states. They connect via Skype and record with Pamela call recorder. He pans himself hard left and all other co-hosts hard right. They all use ATR2005's and Chris has a Behringer XENYX X1204USB mic that he uses if his roommate or someone else is hosting with him at his house. Then he brings the raw .WAV file into Adobe Audition, separating the stereo file into two mono tracks. He normalizes the levels for both tracks and removes background noise, and maybe adds a gate if the background noise is still an issue. He also truncates long periods of silence using a preset he made. Any period of silence more than 550 milliseconds long gets truncated to 550 ms. Then he edits and mixes down to 16 bit 44.1kHz .WAV file at -19 LUFS. Then, in another separate session in Audition, he adds intro/outro music, any other audio clips, and then exports to MP3. Thank you for being a great guest, Chris! DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks. Thanks for listening! PES 022: Georg Holzmann
My guest is Georg Holzmann, founder of Auphonic. He lives in Austria. We went deeper than usual into audio processing including: Machine learning Compression Noise reduction Loudness levels Handling multiple voices Crossgating We spent time going line by line through the fascinating Audio Processing Statistics that Auphonic provides after you process a piece of audio. During the show we discussed the screenshot shown here, which contains these data: Programme Loudness Max Peak Level Loudness Range (LRA) Max Momentary Loudness Max Shortterm Loudness Leveler Gain mean Leveler Gain min Leveler Gain max SNR mean Background Level mean Signal Level mean I also asked him about how voices with different EQ appear different in loudness, as well as if there are cases for which I should process the audio a bit first before using Auphonic. We appreciate you hanging with us, Georg! DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks. Thanks for listening! PES 021: Mary Mazurek
My guest is Mary Mazurek - audio engineer with 25 years experience, radio producer at WFMT Chicago including the "Live from WFMT" show, and instructor in the Department of Audio Arts and Acoustics at Columbia College in Chicago. Because she's doesn't host her own podcast show yet (coming soon!), she joined the show from her makeshift studio in her closet including a homemade pop filter using a knitting hoop and panty hose! We had an awesome conversation about many vital topics: Trying out her new microphone - Shure MV-51 USB EQ frequency bands and how they affect the sound Fletcher–Munson curves Compression philosophy and tips Microphone choice Microphone placement Proximity effect Thank you for being a wonderful guest, Mary! PES 020: Max Flight
My guest is Max Flight, host of Airplane Geeks Podcast, co-host and producer of The UAV Digest and the #PaxEx Podcast. We talked about all phases of his podcast production. This is an overview of what Max's engineering in his own words from an email he sent me: I'm involved with 3 podcasts, all aviation-related: Airplane Geeks: Co-founder (2008), host, and producer (since 2009). The UAV Digest: A spinoff from Airplane Geeks. I co-host and produce. The PaxEx Podcast: Co-host and I produce it up to the MP3, after which I hand it off. All shows are over Skype with co-host(s) and guest. Mix-minus, 2 laptops, record into both hardware and software, soundboard on iPad. I record in my home studio, in hotel rooms, at conferences and public events (annually at the Smithsonian's Air & Space Museum). So depending on the situation, I use the Heil PR40, Sennheiser e835, AudioTechnica ATR2100, and a Sennheiser MD 46 interview mic. Other gear: TritonAudio FetHead, Marantz PMD620 and Zoom H4n recorders, Focusrite Scarlett Solo, a bunch of Behringer UCA-2xx audio interfaces, Sennheiser A380 and Sony MDR V6 headphones, Monster Cable 3500, Yamaha HS5 monitor. I've used a Presonus Tube-pre in the past, but not lately. For software I use Audacity and Hindenburg Journalist Pro. I love Hindy. It's really a different model for a DAW. I like to record clean at proper levels with no effects (and little to no noise floor). Each person on their own track, EQ by track, global compression, loudness at -16 LUFS. PES 019: Recap of My Q&A Session at Podcast Movement
My pal from New Jersey, Ralph M. Rivera, hangs with me in this session. A bit of fun was had by all. He is the cofounder of Podcaster's Toolbox, host of the Web.Search.Social podcast, and a wonderful marketing guru. He and his beautiful wife, Carol Lynn, had a booth at Podcast Movement encouraging folks to get on the "Beta train" for Podcaster's Toolbox. You can too. We discuss many of the questions I got from folks in my Q&A session on audio engineering at Podcast Movement. Listen for all the answers and tips! Here are some of my notes: What to do when you compress an already-kind-of-noisy signal and the noise becomes really loud? (try smashing it on top using high threshold with high ratio!) Multitrack software programs are just tools, and for podcasting it's more important HOW you use the tool than having the most expensive, feature-rich program. Marc Johanssen's Podcast Gear Group on Facebook Video tutorials: Dave Jackson, Carey Green, Fixing things…..The golden rule of audio engineering: Record it right the first time! How to process audio that has a lot of room reverb on it, and get rid of the reverb? What is EQ exactly? Frequencies, adjusting to taste... Gating, expanding Speaking directly into the mic or speaking on an angle past the mic? MP3 quality of final episodes. (128kbps stereo, 64kbps mono) Best way to make sure 3 people in the same room sound good and don't bleed too much? (1. Everyone very close to their mic, 2. Mic's pointed away from each other (120 degrees is optimum for 3 mic's), Multitrack Auphonic's crossgate feature) One attendee mentioned Levelator, and another attendee said it's still around but is not being updated so it's slowly dying kinda. LUFS (origin, what does it mean, levels of music, tv commercials, etc) Listen to this entire session for all the goods, including AFTER the music fades -- Ralph and I briefly discuss our wild plans for our shared double booth at Podcast Movement 2017 in Anaheim, California! PES 018: Jason Bryant
My guest is Jason Bryant, founder of Mat Talk Online and the Mat Talk Podcast Network. We had a great chat - listen to get the full effect ;) Here's an overview of Jason's equipment and workflow (taken from an email he previously sent me): I host 10 different shows (of the 14 on the network) Using a MacBook Pro with an AT2005 microphone for my home set up. Routed through a Yamaha MG102C and a FocusRite 2i2. I use the AT2005 based on it's sound and flexibility. I record for triple redundancy. I use Adobe Audition as my main recording option, but also record externally out of the Yamaha board into a Zoom H5 (my audio in one channel, caller's audio in the other). I also use ECamm Call recorder as a backup. The ECamm/Skype is using the USB portion of the AT2005, while the mixer and Focusrite are using the XLR portion of it — so if any channel goes out, I don't have to stop the interview, I can keep going with three relatively clean copies of the recording. With the Skype setup, I'm running a mix-minus from the aux send through a Behringer U-Control, so when I play back other call audio to the guest, they can hear it, same with music, effects and drops, which I've got lined into the Yamaha from another MacBook Pro. Most of my shows are hosted on Libsyn, but I have three that are hosted on Blubrry (two of them archived or retired shows). On the road, I've used the H5 with the add-on so I can get 4 XLR mics (they're either AT2100's or AT2005). When I'm doing interviews in press conference situations, I'm using a Sennheiser MD46. It's a dynamic mic with an elongated handle with room for a mic flag and it works well with the long time you have to hold the mic. Thank you for being a great guest, Jason! PES 016: Drew Smith
My guest is Drew Smith, host of the Under Ten Fitness podcast, Radio DJ and producer, personal trainer and power lifter. In this episode, Drew tried to stump your host by playing 3 different pre-recorded sound clips recorded with 3 different microphones, and then asking which sound clip was which mic. The 3 mic's are a Sennheiser e835, an EV RE-20, and an EV Cobalt Co9. Play along - listen and guess for yourself! Pause the podcast right before I make my guesses. We discussed Drew's podcast equipment and workflow in depth, including his MXL 990 condenser microphone, PreSonus AudioBox, Adobe Audition, and more. We also briefly discussed (and I got to check out in person!) a new piece of equipment Drew recently purchased, the Zoom R16. Thank you for being a great guest, Drew! My guest is Rob Walch, VP of Podcaster Relations for Libsyn, and host and/or producer of the following podcast shows: Podcast 411 The Feed Today in iOS KC Startup 411 Even his son Porter has a podcast! Porters Podcast Rob also helps produce WelchCast We spoke in detail about Rob's technical setup for each of his shows. Along the way Rob had some great tips for all of us: (Listen to the episode for all the nitty-gritty) Record your Skype audio on a different device instead of on the same computer which you're using to Skype. Then there's no risk of over-taxing that computer's CPU He loves his Marantz 660 digital recorder - rock solid Sound Soap (plugin to clean up audio) - $150, works in GarageBand When making Skype calls, the call will be smoother if the call is initiated from the person with the fastest internet connection When linking to your show's iTunes presence, there is a way to have your show open directly in the place where your listener can click 'Subscribe.' *Here are the steps: 1. Append &LS=1 to your iTunes show URL 2. Then create a Bitly link for that link 3. Then use that Bitly link to promote your show in iTunes BTW- try clicking the one of the two iTunes links in this post and see where it opens ;) Also, while recording this episode we had a disconnection/crash of CAST, which we were using to connect and record. I am digging CAST and learning how to use it.......and how NOT to use it - like closing the tab of a session and then trying to get back to that session (which you can't) Thank you for being a great guest and helping us so much, Rob! PES 003: Kate Astrakhan
Session #3 with Kate Astrakhan, Owner of Audio Adrenaline! Kate also hosts the Make Your Bed podcast. She has a ton of experience in radio and voiceovers - including that famous Greyhound commercial on which she sang, "Go Greyhound and leave the driving to us." We discussed many audio topics including: Kate not using plugins Her Misophonia (see below, it's related to sound) Her opinion on USB microphones Her love of Behringer equipment Super-detail editing Adobe Audition She also brought up an amazing use of a de-esser, and hopefully she will share that secret with us in the comments, etc. *Here's a bit about Misophonia: also known as selective sound sensitivity syndrome, starts with a trigger. It's often an oral sound -- the noise someone makes when they eat, breathe, chew, yawn, or whistle. Sometimes a small repetitive motion is the cause -- someone fidgets, jostles you, or wiggles their foot. PES 002: Luis Congdon
Luis Congdon admits that he's not the most technical guy on the planet, but he's been through several audio setups so we learned from his production evolution. He hosts the Lasting Love Connection podcast, and the Thriving Launch podcast. His audio setup includes a Scarlett 2i2 audio interface and MXL microphones. He and his co-host record in the same room, so we talked about how he optimizes that sound. These days he records into Logic Pro. Previously he tried recording with Ecamm recorder, Garage Band, and Adobe Audition, but he wasn't satisfied with any of them. He uses a Blue Yeti when he travels and he started the Podcasters Exchange Facebook group! Thanks Luis! PES 001: Mary and Blake Larsen
And we're off! In this first session I chat with Mary and Blake Larsen - Hosts of ParentCast, The Living Reminders, and OutlanderCast. Mary is also a musician and Blake also makes donuts. They are delightful people; maybe you want to reach out to them and say hello. Mary has an ear for details. Her previous experience as a TV show host gave her a deep insight into presentation, sound and listener experience. Now she uses those skills to craft great podcasts. Blake is the audio engineer in the relationship. He built a custom studio in their basement. Over time they have have upgraded their equipment little by little. They didn't start with great gear. These days they use Heil microphones and an 8-channel Alesis mixer. They record in Garage Band and edit using Adobe Audition. Blake uses an iPad for playing sound clips while recording episodes. They mainly use Skype for connecting with guests, and sometimes they use Skype to call their guests on the phone when they are only able to connect by phone. For mixing and mastering in Audition, Blake started with one of the factory presets on his compressor but then he tweaked it to suit their taste. Some challenges that Blake had were getting a good sound using EQ, and getting good mic levels while recording. A couple tips: When you're adjusting your sound settings to establish good presets, (as well as to train your ears), it pays to listen to your recordings in various places on different speakers. Listen on your studio monitors, listen on your headphones, earbuds, in your car, on a Bluetooth speaker, etc. You will then have a much better idea what your sound REALLY sounds like to other people. Record some dead air with all the mic's on but no one speaking. This can come in handy later while editing when you need to put a little blank space in between an edit so it doesn't sound like an edit. You just take a little dead air and insert it there and voila - it sounds natural. What an awesome session. Thanks Mary and Blake! Check out their shows: ParentCast, The Living Reminders, and OutlanderCast. DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks. Trailer: Preview of the Show
I'm Chris Curran, and I'm on crusade against horrible sounding podcast audio! In general, podcasters and producers tend to have weak (or non-existent) audio engineering skills. That's where this show can help. By listening to this show every week you will gain an unfair advantage in the world of podcast production. Each week we will talk to a podcast engineer/producer and learn how they're producing podcasts - their equipment, their workflow, and advanced tips. Plus, we have fun ;) Me: Chris Curran, founder of Podcast Engineering School and Fractal Recording. http://podcastengineeringschool.com/ DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks.
