PES 096: Billy O Returns

My returning guest is Billy O - host of The Billy O Show, podcast producer and audio engineer. We discuss post-production specifically, and of course meander in and out of other podcast production topics including: Mixing "in the box" Waves plugins: EQ, Vocal Rider, X-hum FabFilter Pro-Q2 and Pro-MB plugins Nomad Factory plugins - cheaper but pretty good General EQ advice: Cut wide and boost narrow How to apply EQ and compression directly on a channel vs. using sends for reverbs and delays Chris mentions his new way of subgrouping voices so he doesn't "re-master" the intro and outro music Playing tracks off Spotify via through his Pioneer DJM 400 mixer Editing Also, if you're interested in recording music at home, check out Billy O's 5-part series covering DIY Home Recording, published as episodes 19-23 of his Billy O Show podcast. Thanks Billy O for a great session! DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks. Thanks for listening! PES 095: Situations and Solutions

Enjoy this solo session packed with lots of recent production scenarios I faced bravely. Hopefully some of what I share will help you in your production. Announcements and Stuff: Last call for the PES semester starting in a week and a half (Enroll and be classmates with a "podcast celebrity" student to be named later!) If you or someone you know would be a great guest for this show please let me know. On a personal productivity note: I've removed lots of apps from my phone: all social media, YouTube, Twitch, Wikipedia, etc. I listed off all the audio and podcasting apps I still have on my phone. I recently taught a webinar titled "How to EQ" for Steve Stewart's Podcast Editors Club Facebook group. Check it out here. A recent message I received from VaShaun Jones (who was my guest on session #67) responding to my recent call for screen-sharing app recommendations: "You should use Team Viewer Quick Support for your remote access concerns. It's free and tried and true. I've been using it for 8 years." My recent research on ipDTL (ISDN calls and radio remotes from a web browser): I believe it's mostly used by radio folks and voiceover folks. Deal-breaker: No local recordings of each participant. And btw, the clicking on Zencastr recordings seems to be gone for good :) Situations and Solutions: Earbud guest in reverby room. Recording a guest by using Skype to call their mobile phone - sounded really muddy. Guest in reverby room using an AT2020 condenser mic with a horrendous internet connection causing a billion clicks on Zencastr, and afterwards the guests track was significantly shorter. Recording the correct microphone! Check your computer settings as well as the app settings. Live panel with 5 people recorded on 1 track. Even out using Auphonic or a compressor with a long release time. Balancing the participants EQ is tough: de-esser, multi-band compressor. Mixing WebEx audio recorded at 8kHz sample rate (only capturing up to 4kHz). Some possible remedies: Aphex aural exciter, Scheps Omni Channel preamp saturation, boost 2-4kHz range, remove some low mids and low frequencies. Let me know if you have any questions. PES 089: NAB Show Recap

I recap my experience at NAB last week, including our Mic Test Drive Booth and lots more including: BIG thanks to my booth brothers: Michael Helms, Josh Wade, and Landen Hardy! Our 10 mics, Mackie 1642VLZ4, MixPre-6 borrowed from Sound Devices, and a BP40 borrowed from Steve Savanyu at Audio-Technica. Sennheiser's upcoming wireless clip on mic, and the Neumann U67 at their booth! My birthday gift - a Neewer mini microphone! Watch Bandrew Scott's video on this mic here. The Venue was HUGE - Las Vegas Convention Center. Booth traffic was OK. And I was interviewed twice - one audio and one video. I also mentioned my drive out there - TO Vegas via New Mexico and Arizona, FROM Vegas via Utah and Colorado. And it was great to hang out with: Rob Walch - Libsyn Todd Cochrane, Mike Dell, MacKenzie - Blubrry Jennifer Crawford and Vernon Ross - Podbean Rob Greenlee - Voxnest Eric Larsen - Tascam Sean and Ira - Samson Podfest guys - Chris Krimitsos, John Dennis Podcast Movement guys - Jared Easley, Dan Franks Allan Tepper Emma Victoria Austin Dillman - REV Angela Copeland Other stuff: Skype Has a Big Announcement for Content Creators: Skype was proud to announce the new Skype for Content Creators, which looks to be what podcasters have been asking for, for years. The new feature is available in preview form now (at NAB) and should be widely available in the summer for both Mac and Windows 10 users. Skype for Content Creators records calls directly through NDI-capable software like Wirecast, Xsplit, and Vmix. The feature provides "clean" copies of all call participants that you can quickly drop into audio and video production apps, so you can focus more on the content and publishing of your show, and less on double-checking everyone's recordings. I detail how I mixed an episode using the wrong Sonarworks profile, and then had to correct it. Because I had already done many edits, it wasn't an option to go back to the mix and adjust the individual tracks. Lastly: Congrats to the current students enrolled in PES! Next semester starts June 26th and super-early-bird pricing still available. DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks. PES 087: Paul Kafasis

My guest is Paul Kafasis, CEO of Rogue Amoeba! We talked about A LOT this session - these show notes don't do our conversation justice. *PC users: We are going to talk a lot about Rogue Amoeba's software which is only available for Mac currently, although some of the functionality we talk about may be available for PC at some point. You're welcome to hang with us or skip this session. Here are the Rogue Amoeba software we discussed: Audio Hijack (flexible and powerful recorder) Loopback (route any audio anywhere) Piezo (simple recorder) Fission (audio editor) - editing, metadata, chapters, and lossless editing on lossy files! Chapters - set different art and URL or each chapter. Farrago (soundboard) - note: it's not currently able to be controlled by any midi controllers yet. SoundSource (simple sound control) Paul also answered some questions from Twitter fans: Loopback lacks an essential professional working environment feature: a straight forward backup utility for all defined/saved virtual devices. Currently you must dig into the file system and save copies of Preference/.plist files. It works. On the other hand, it's clunky. (Paul Figgiani @produceNewMedia) How to run my mic through a channel strip plugin so effects can go through Skype/FaceTime live. (Travis Hill @PodcastMic) They're so good at native Mac app, I'm surprised they don't take advantage of the CloudKit API and sync that with iCloud. (Alex Knight @ZeroDistraction) Thanks for being a great guest, Paul! DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks. PES 079: Chris Updates, 2017 Reflections and 2018 Plans

Note: This is not a standard TPES episode - this is me sharing lots of cool info. Here's what we covered: End of year purchases: iMac Pro MixPre6 Pistol grip for my AT8035 shotgun mic Ralph M. Rivera purchased Bose QuietComfort 35 II headphones - bluetooth sounds great - very comfortable and light - can use them to talk on the phone too - $350 Configuration of the iMac Pro: 3.0GHz 10-core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz 64GB 2666MHz DDR4 ECC memory 2TB SSD Radeon Pro Vega 56 with 8GB of HBM2 memory My plans for the iMacPro: Have one production space instead of a recording table and a mixing desk. Live streaming with video and several participants. Green screen. Webinars and screen captures. Move all plugins from current production computer to the new one. Sennheiser MKH416 would be nice. PES 2017 reflections: First 2 semesters of PES went extremely well. PM17 was good but working a booth made it a blur. As always, some clients came and went. 2018 plans: Podcast Movement - not sure if I'll be doing the Microphone Test-Drive Booth again. Four Podcast Engineering School semesters starting Jan.9, Apr. 3, Jun. 26 and Sep. 18 Podfudge! My upcoming PechaKucha talk at Podfest: Title: EQ - What You Need to Know about Equalization Description: Learn the fundamentals of why, what and how to use EQ. Hear examples of good and bad audio. Audio examples: Too much low end, too much high end harshness, harsh esses, phone sound, road noise with uncompressed voice getting lost in it at times, too much reverb, huge dynamic range raw and then compressed How I processed Hardcore History episodes for my road trip: Why? Prius is a light car with more than average road noise. Batching in RX 6 and Sound Forge Pro Saved to mono first (to half the processing time for all subsequent steps), then leveling and loudness. - created awful sounding MP3's. Should have done everything in RX 6 first, exported as a WAV, then opened in Sound Forge Pro and saved as a mono MP3. Podcasters' Society: A truly awesome community Experience with the Pause Your Life podcast: Producer always worked in mono only and converted all music to mono. Suggestion: You should always leave stereo music stereo because it doesn't hurt anything and you can always render to mono. Fixing a harshly EQ'd voice - Fabfilter MB multiband compressor in the 3-10k range Thanks for listening! PES 075: Have Another Slice of Audio.Pizza Baked by Garth Humphreys

My returning guest is Garth Humphreys, host and producer of Audio Pizza, Aussie Mac Zone and iBlindTech. Garth and I go deep and get technical - and of course we make it practical and relevant to your podcast production, too ;) Before Garth and I got rolling, I first explained how I recently rescued some bad sounding audio using various steps: Putting it through Auphonic first (noise reduction, low end filter, leveler), then processing the resulting Flac file in iZotope RX 6 (phase, de-reverb, and de-click), then more processing in Reaper including EQ'ing and de-essing. Then we discussed: Garth's new Yamaha HS7 6.5" Powered Studio Monitors Compression: Going through all the parameters, what they mean and how they work. LUFS: Understanding how it's calculated and what it's measuring. FLAC file format: Benefits of using it for recording and archiving. Phase trick: A cool way to hear what a plugin is actually doing to your audio. It also works for checking impact of MP3 encoding. Then I told the entire story of my recent purchase of the Rode Broadcaster microphone, and why I returned it quickly. (Note: It's NOT because it's a bad mic) I also talked about the two Fabfilter plugins I bought recently: The Pro-DS (de-esser) and the Pro-MB (multiband compressor). Thanks for hanging out with me again Garth and sharing so many tasty slices of audio pizza! PES 049: Updates and More New Stuff

Today I'm using my new microphone for the first time! Actually it's over 30 years old - a vintage RE20 from the 80's I believe, and courtesy of Marc Johanssen. (join his Facebook group here). Yesterday I recorded session #50 with Roy Stegman using it, too, but that was before I spent time dialing in the settings on my channel strip to make the mic sound tip-top. NEWS: I'm proud to announce that I am now a resident expert (of audio engineering) in the Podcasters' Society! It's a wonderful community founded and facilitated by Daniel J. Lewis, a former guest on this podcast ;) It's a wonderful community for podcasters and producers who have already launched their show(s) and are ready to improve their show(s) big time. It's WAY more helpful than your average Facebook group, and I'm not knocking any podcasting Facebook groups because they are awesome, it's just that Podcasters' Society goes way deeper and wider in so many ways. *As I mentioned in the audio, here's my discount/affiliate link for Podcasters' Society: https://podcasterssociety.com/pes/ NEW GEAR: I purchased a Zoom H6 for on-site recording among other things. I especially like the solid build, the different microphone attachments, and most of all the backup recordings on the L and R which record at 12 db lower than the main recordings to provide a safety net in case there is some distortion on the main L and R channels. I also reflected briefly on Podfest again. Love that conference... It's getting close to Podcast Engineering School which starts online on April 4th. I commented on all the training modules and topics that will be covered. Even if you don't attend the course, these are some areas where you can improve your production value a lot. PES 048: Kirk Bowman

My guest is Kirk Bowman, host and producer of The Art of Value Podcast. Kirk is seriously on top of his game in the area of podcast production. We had fun discussing his equipment, workflow and processing, etc. (list of topics is below) I asked Kirk to send me the stock settings for the Broadcast preset in the multiband compressor which comes with Adobe Audition (because tons folks use this preset). See the show notes for a screenshot. Kirk also told me about a channel strip which has a phase 'rotation' function (which is different than the much more popular phase 'inversion'). See the show notes for a screenshot. Here are some other things we discussed: MOTU 1248 interface 4 XLR inputs Routing matrix AVB (audio over ethernet used to connect multiple interfaces together) Thunderbolt to Mac Built-in effects Match Loudness in Adobe Audition Multitrack recording Processing each track to -18 LUFS using Auphonic Multiband compression during mixdown Editing Upgrading equipment as he grew Thanks for being a great guest, Kirk!
