Our featured interview tonight is with pipe maker Nate King. Nate started smoking pipes in 2004, and starting making them in 2005. Prior to that he worked in the Indy race business where as a transmission specialist, precision and attention to detail is a high priority, and this carries over into his pipe making. Nate makes all kinds of pipes from the classic shapes, to whimsical. retro-inspired pieces such as a commission inspired by an old-style microphone. He has also participated in many collaborations on pipe designs, such as with fellow pipe maker Michael Lindner, and tobacco blender Gregory Pease. In Pipe Parts, Brian will have a pipe review, and at the end of the show we will have a guest rant.

We have a different format for tonight’s show and it will be all about two pipe shows—”shows” as in organized conferences / get togethers. Brian just got back from the Chicago pipe show, and most of this episode will be a discussion on that. Brian will give us a run down on how he spent each day, and information on the new venue. Then we have four different show attendees that Brian talked to on the show floor to get their takes on the newly revived show. In the opening Pipe Parts segment you’ll hear about another pipe show. 506: Pipe Collector Jacob Michelson. Review of King’s Red Virginia.
Our featured guest tonight is Jacob Michelson. Some of our listeners, pipe show attendees, and collectors will know Jacob’s late father Mitch Michelson. Mitch had an untimely passing on August 28, 2019. He was an avid pipe collector, and used to join Jacob in model building, woodworking, model rockets, and radio controlled cars—and the pipe was always there across all of these endeavors, but ironically, they never talked much about Jacob actually smoking a pipe or collecting. One day, Jacob decided to try a pipe on his own. Then, he really got into pipes after he inherited his father’s collection. He has some great stories of his pipe journey. Our featured interview tonight is with pipemaker Dr. Charles Theivagt. Charles is a Otolaryngologist in McAllen, TX. (For us regular people, that's a specialist in ears, nose and throat.) He smoked cigars for 20-years, and switched to smoking pipes about three years ago. He became interested in the engineering of pipes, air-flow, etc., which led to his interest in making pipes. Besides following online videos and forums, he trained directly with pipe artisan Jeff Gracik. When he's not practicing medicine or making pipes, he loves to surf in the Gulf of Mexico. Our featured interview tonight is with Phil Morgan, the General Manager of the Missouri Meerschaum Co. Missouri Meerschaum has been making the original American-made Corn Cob Pipes for over 150-years. Phil is joined on the show by his daughter, Shannon Hock. She has been working at the company for several years and will be increasing her role there. We will also talk about Missouri Meerschaum's take over of sales and marketing for Old Dominion corn cob and clay pipes, and the differences between the brands. Our featured interview tonight is with “pipe making hobbyist”, Murph. Even though he won a pipe carving contest back in the ’80’s, he says, “I am not a ‘pipe maker.’ I am a pipe making hobbyist. I don’t make a business or vocation with my pipes. I create them as an avocation because I have the time, enjoy the creative process and love the gratification of completing something beautiful, unique and useful.” However, you can buy his pipes. At the top of the show, Brian will report on his nearly three-week trip and cruise through Greece, Italy and Croatia.

Our featured interview tonight is with Belgian pipe maker Bruno Nuttens. Bruno lives in France, and started in the pipe world doing restorations. He was first mentored by pipe maker Pierre Morel, who also helped him acquire specialized pipe making tools and equipment. In 2019, Tom Eltang invited Bruno for a week in his workshop to learn other techniques with him. At the top of the show, Brian will re-evaluate traveling with pipes based on how many days he’s gone for his current travels.

Our featured interview tonight is with Jody Davis. Jody is a renowned pipe artisan, and the lead guitar player for the Grammy-nominated Christian rock band, The Newsboys. His pipes are extremely high quality with Danish style designs, and they are not easy to come by. We will talk about the process of creating a new pipe shape, which Jody has done. It is called the Amore, which is a variation of a heart shape. At the top of the show, Brian will discuss his thoughts on when you should buy a pipe. It is in response to Country Squire Radio's recent episode on the same topic.

His parents noticed his artistic interest as early as kindergarten, and signed him up for extra curricular art activities that early in life. He is also a part-time pipe maker, and we love that he always has a pipe in his mouth in all of his photos, even when it's an art focused interview.
