Nobody hits: Phillies finish road trip with 20-straight scoreless innings
What happened out west? The Phillies opened a six-game road trip on Friday in Colorado by scoring seven runs in the first inning and winning 10-1. They scored two or fewer runs in four of the next five games, including consecutive shutout losses in San Francisco to finish the road trip. The Phillies are 6-6. It’s early, but the offense’s slow start has you wondering. We discuss the offense’s malaise, plus provide updates on J.T. Realmuto, Zack Wheeler and Aidan Miller and share our thoughts on the late Davey Lopes. A series win: Phillies show flashes in Colorado
The Phillies scored seven runs in the first inning in Friday’s series opener in Colorado, and everybody had to be thinking … here comes the offense. The Phils won two of three this weekend in Colorado, but they scored only three runs in the final two games of the series. Fortunately, Jesús Luzardo pitched a gem in Saturday’s 2-1 victory. Unfortunately, Taijuan Walker did not in Sunday’s 4-1 loss. Takeaways from the weekend in both the hitting and pitching side? It’s “Best Week” by Manco & Manco Pizza! Manco’s is the Best of the Best, and every week throughout the season we pick our best Phillies players, performances and moments of the week. Plus, Zack Wheeler made his second rehab start on Friday, but he’s still looking for his fastball velocity. Youth is served: Justin Crawford, Andrew Painter lead Phillies
Thank goodness for Phillies rookies Andrew Painter and Justin Crawford. Painter led the way to a victory on Tuesday, when he made his MLB debut. Crawford’s walk-off hit in the 10th inning on Wednesday allowed the Phillies to win their first series of the season. They’ve provided a jolt to the Phillies, who are struggling offensively. We talk about the kids, the Phillies’ slumping offense and why we think they’ll be OK. Get 10% off your first month of BlueChew Gold with code FOUL at BlueChew.com Love the show? Andrew Painter delivers in Phillies debut
Phillies fans had been waiting years for Andrew Painter’s Phillies debut. Painter had been waiting his entire life. But Tuesday’s MLB debut was worth the wait. Painter struck out eight and allowed just one run in 5 ⅓ innings against the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park. What impressed us the most about Painter’s debut? A lot of things. We dig into it. A no-hit weekend: Phillies stumble in season-opening series
The Phillies won Opening Day, then stumbled badly this weekend in a season-opening series loss to the Rangers. They were no-hit through 4 ⅔ innings on Saturday. They were no-hit through five innings on Sunday. We found plenty to talk about, even though the offense did little. Plus, we look ahead at Andrew Painter’s MLB debut on Tuesday and more. Bona Fide Superstar: Cristopher Sánchez leads Phillies on Opening Day
The Phillies opened another World Series-or-bust season with a solid 5-3 win over Texas on a beautiful Thursday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. The Rangers called Cristopher Sánchez a bona fide superstar. Kyle Schwarber did his thing … hitting his third Opening Day homer for the Phillies in just five years. Alec Bohm showed he can be a cleanup hitter by smacking a three-run homer. And how about Justin Crawford, getting a hit on the first pitch of the first MLB at-bat of his career? Bryce Harper's mission: chase less, walk more, win more
Bryce Harper returned to Phillies camp on Thursday, and he had several interesting things to say. He talked about playing for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, of course. But he also talked about his swing and how he has been chasing fewer pitches outside the strike zone. It’s a real focus of Harper’s, who has learned this spring that it won’t matter who’s protecting him in the lineup if he’s swinging at pitches outside the zone. We talk about Adolis García’s swing adjustment, plus dig into a few things we’re looking forward to seeing in the spring’s final four games. Bravo! Aaron Nola looks "pretty dang good" this spring.
We say it almost every episode in the spring: Don’t go crazy over spring training performances -- good or bad. But Aaron Nola sure has looked good this spring. He pitched five scoreless innings for Team Italy in Wednesday night’s 9-1 victory over Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. Nola not only helped Italy go 4-0 in pool play, but he saved Team USA from potentially being eliminated from the tournament. We talk a lot about Nola and his chances of bouncing back in 2026, Chase Utley’s induction onto the Phillies’ Wall of Fame and Zack Wheeler’s live BP on Saturday. Simply the Best: Kyle Schwarber powers Team USA
Kyle Schwarber reminded everybody on Saturday that he’s one of the most feared, most highly regarded hitters in baseball. He crushed a tie-breaking home run against Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic. Schwarber has hit fourth and first for Team USA in the team’s first two games. It got us thinking about his potential for enshrinement in Cooperstown, N.Y. It’s “Best Week” by Manco & Manco Pizza!
