Can God Create Everything from Nothing? (Special Podcast Highlight)

bonus

Patrick Madrid tackled a great question that could make you scratch your head a bit!    How is it logical for God to create everything out of nothing?    Our buddy Anonymous Andy from Rhode Island wrote in with a serious theological puzzle. He gets that God is logical and cannot create contradictions (like a four-sided triangle or a married bachelor). Then Andy hits us with the question:   "If God created everything out of nothing, isn’t that a contradiction too?"     Patrick’s Breakdown: Why This Isn’t a Contradiction   1. A Contradiction = Two Opposing Truths at the Same Time   A four-sided triangle is actually impossible because "triangle" means "three-sided figure." If you try to add a fourth side, it's no longer a triangle. That’s a logical contradiction. Creating something out of nothing, however, is not.   2. God IS Existence Itself (Remember the Burning Bush?)    Patrick takes us to Exodus 3, where Moses asks God, “Who should I say sent me?” and God replies:   "I AM WHO AM."   Not "I have being" but "I AM being." Unlike us, who received existence from something before us (our parents), God didn’t get existence from anything: He IS existence.   3. Everything in Creation Had a Beginning   Everything we see: planets, people, Patrick Madrid’s radio show, came into existence because something caused it to exist. Here’s the important thing: there has to be a first cause, something that always existed and started it all.   That "something" is God: the uncaused cause, the prime mover, the reason anything exists at all.   4. "Before" Creation? There Was No "Before"!    We’re stuck thinking in terms of time, but time itself is part of creation. Saying, "What happened before creation?" is like asking, "What’s north of the North Pole?" (Nothing.)   When God created, it wasn’t like He was sitting around twiddling His divine thumbs. There was no "before": only God, eternally existing.   5. It’s About God’s Power, Not a Magic Trick   Creation ex nihilo (out of nothing) doesn’t mean "poof!" in a magician sort of way. It means that God, who IS existence, shares existence with created things. He isn’t reshaping pre-existing stuff like some cosmic Play-Doh; He gives being itself.     Final Takeaway: It's All About God’s Nature   Patrick wraps it up by emphasizing:   Creating out of nothing isn’t a contradiction; it’s the logical result of who God is. If God wasn't the uncaused cause, nothing else could exist. He created not because He needed to, but out of love.      God creating out of nothing isn’t like a square circle; it's the only way anything could exist at all.

"Is Your Spiritual Bank Account Full?" (Special Podcast Highlight)

bonus

Patrick Madrid shares a great little saying from Karen in Pennsylvania. Her mom used to ask her and her siblings before a trip: "Are your spiritual bank accounts full?" Now, Karen does the same with her own kids. Love it. Simple, powerful, and convicting.   Patrick brings this up as he reflects on the heartbreaking tragedy you may have heard about: the collision between an American Airlines flight and a military helicopter near Washington, D.C. Everyone on board lost their lives. May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.    You never know when your time is up. Not in a scary, doom-and-gloom way, but in a real way. Life is unpredictable. If something sudden happened, would you be ready to meet God?    The challenge: Don’t just fill up your gas tank before a trip; fill up your soul, too. Whether that’s confession, prayer, or just checking in on where your heart is, stay ready.   A solid reminder from Patrick... and Karen’s mom! So… is your spiritual bank account full?

Why the Difference Between Saying "Catholic" and "Christian" Can Be Misleading (Special Podcast Highlight)

bonus

On this episode of The Patrick Madrid Show, Patrick explores a topic that many Catholics might not even realize they’re accidentally messing up: how we talk about Catholics and Protestants. If you’ve ever said, “Oh, I’m Catholic, and they’re Christian,” Patrick is here to gently (but firmly) ask you to stop doing that.    The Big Idea:   Patrick reminds us that Catholics ARE Christians: the OG Christians, to be exact.  When Jesus established His Church 2,000 years ago, it wasn’t some vague, do-it-yourself Christianity. Nope, it was the Catholic Church. So, when we use language that separates "Catholic" from "Christian," we’re actually misrepresenting the truth about who we are as followers of Christ.   What About Protestants?   Yes, Protestants are Christians, but their Christianity is different. It stems from the Protestant Reformation, which started as a protest against the Catholic Church about 500 years ago. Patrick explains how Protestantism branched into countless denominations because of the idea of Sola Scriptura (the belief in “Bible alone”): an idea that’s not biblical or part of historic Christianity.   Patrick points out the endless debates among Protestant groups: “Does baptism save you or not?” “Can you lose your salvation or nah?” It’s like a theological Rubik’s Cube with no solution.    The result? Protestants follow a fragmented version of Christianity that leans heavily on individual interpretations of the Bible. Patrick notes that some churches basically just pick a “mini-Pope” (a charismatic pastor) to tell them what the Bible means.   Catholicism = Historic Christianity   Patrick doesn’t hold back: the Catholic Church is the original Christianity. Full stop. When you open the Bible, especially the Book of Acts, you’re seeing the Catholic Church in her beginnings. By the early second century, Saint Ignatius of Antioch was already calling it the Catholic Church.   The Eucharist, Apostolic succession, the sacraments, the teachings of Christ: they all come from the Catholic Church. It’s not just a Christian church; it’s THE Church Christ established.   Why Words Matter   Patrick’s key takeaway is this: how we talk shapes how we think. By casually separating "Catholic" and "Christian," we’re accidentally buying into the false idea that Catholicism is just one denomination among many. I’s not. It’s the Church that Jesus Himself founded.   So Stop Saying...   “Oh, I’m Catholic, but they’re Christian.” Start Saying... "I’m Catholic: part of the original Christian Church."   Patrick isn’t here to bash Protestants; he just wants Catholics to stop selling themselves short. The next time someone asks you about your faith, remember: being Catholic is being Christian, and it’s time we talked like it.

Is Guilt Good? (Special Podcast Highlight)

bonus

Olivia’s Question   A listener named Olivia from L.A. wrote in to say that, ever since growing in her Catholic faith (thanks, Relevant Radio!), she feels a ton of guilt. She’s wondering: Is this normal? Is this just her conscience working overtime?     Patrick’s response: Guilt isn’t bad. Guilt is good. Guilt is your friend. Cue plot twist.     The Guilt Breakdown   Patrick explains guilt like this:   Think of your conscience as a spiritual smoke detector. When there’s “fire” (a.k.a. sin), it goes off to warn you. Guilt is like the alarm saying, “Danger! You messed up. Do something!”   Guilt keeps your soul safe by nudging you toward repentance and grace. Without guilt, your conscience would be useless, like a smoke detector with dead batteries. (Scary, right?)   So, feeling guilt means your conscience is alive and kicking. It’s a sign that you’re growing in awareness and sensitivity to what’s right and wrong.     What About "Catholic Guilt"?   Patrick went on a little rant about the whole “Catholic guilt” stereotype. He’s not a fan. Really, guilt is just your conscience reminding you of the truth. If your conscience didn’t bug you after doing something wrong, you’d be in bigger trouble.   For Olivia, Patrick suggests reframing guilt as a call to holiness. The more you grow in your faith, the clearer you’ll see where you’ve fallen short: not to shame you, but to guide you back to God.     The Earwax Analogy   Okay, here’s where it gets...unexpected. Patrick compares sin to earwax. Yes, you read that right.   Here’s the idea:   Sin can block your spiritual “hearing,” muffling your ability to sense right from wrong, just like earwax blocks sound.   When you clean out your spiritual life (through Confession, prayer, and learning your faith), suddenly you can hear God’s voice loud and clear, and also notice all the stuff you were ignoring before.   Patrick shared how, as a kid, doctors told him he produced an “abundance” of earwax, and every time he got it cleaned out, he could hear all kinds of sounds he hadn’t noticed before. He joked that sin is like that: once it’s cleared out, everything becomes sharper, clearer, and more alive.     Takeaways for Olivia (and You!)   Guilt isn’t about being neurotic or walking on eggshells. It’s about awareness.   Think of guilt as a helpful warning system, not a life sentence. It’s there to guide you back to God’s mercy, not make you miserable.   If your “spiritual ears” are clogged, go to Confession! Clear out the noise and start fresh.     So, next time you’re feeling guilty, don’t stress. Just think: spiritual earwax. Clean it out, tune in to God’s grace, and keep moving forward. God loves you too much to let you stay stuck. 🙌

No Rome, No Problem! How to Receive a Plenary Indulgence Right Where You Are (Special Podcast Highlight)

bonus

Patrick Madrid gets into a question from Emily in Maine, who’s wondering if she has to pack her bags for Rome to receive a plenary indulgence during the Jubilee Year.    Here's the Explanation:   Patrick explains that while Rome’s Holy Doors are a major focus during the Jubilee Year, you don’t actually need to fly to the Eternal City to participate. Many dioceses around the world designate their own churches: usually cathedrals or significant shrines, with Holy Doors. So, you can check out your diocesan website to see which local church has been designated.   Once you know where the doors are, you can receive the same plenary indulgence as if you were in St. Peter’s Basilica.    So, What’s a Plenary Indulgence Anyway?   Patrick gives a quick theology lesson:   A plenary indulgence is the "complete remission of the punishment due to sins that have already been forgiven." It’s like hitting the reset button on your soul’s "penance odometer."   To receive it, you need to:   Be in a state of grace (go to Confession if needed!).   Renounce all attachment to sin: even those sneaky past sins you might secretly still take pride or enjoyment in.   Perform the prescribed act (in this case, passing through a Holy Door).   Receive Communion and pray for the Pope’s intentions (like an Our Father and a Hail Mary).   Patrick makes it clear that detachment from sin doesn’t mean you need to feel it emotionally. It’s an act of the will: a firm decision to reject sin out of true love for God.    What About Rome?   Emily mentions she’d love to go to Rome (don’t we all?), but it’s just not possible. Patrick assures her that the indulgence she gets at her local Holy Door is just as “full” as the one you’d get in Rome. What If a Confirmation Sponsor Isn't Regularly Going to Mass? (Special Podcast Highlight)

bonus

Alright, friends, here’s the gist of Patrick Madrid’s conversation with Ken from Wisconsin about Confirmation sponsors: do they really need to be in good standing with the Church?   What’s the Job of a Sponsor Anyway?   Patrick says to think of a Confirmation sponsor (or a godparent) as a spiritual guide. They’re supposed to help the person they’re sponsoring grow closer to Jesus and the Church. But if a sponsor isn’t living their own faith: like, say, skipping Mass or being lax about Church teachings, then… how can they guide anyone else?    As Patrick explained, the Church has basic rules for sponsors. Here’s a quick checklist:   -Must be baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church.   -Should be living their faith (like, actually going to Mass on Sundays).   -If married, they must be married in the Church.   -Can’t be the parent of the person being baptized/confirmed.   Ken’s Situation    Ken shared a tricky situation: one of his OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) students picked her uncle as her sponsor. Sounds fine, right? Well, turns out the uncle doesn’t really go to Mass. Uh-oh.   Patrick was super thoughtful here. He pointed out that this isn’t just about checking a box. Being a sponsor isn’t a ceremonial role; it’s a real responsibility! A sponsor is meant to guide someone to heaven, not just wave from the pews on Easter Vigil. If this uncle isn’t practicing his faith, then... what exactly is he "sponsoring"?    The Gentle Fix: What Would Patrick Do?   Patrick encouraged Ken to handle this with love and respect: no finger-wagging or guilt trips here.    Educate gently: Ken can explain the importance of a sponsor’s role during class, so it doesn’t feel like he’s calling out Uncle Mass-Skipper directly.   Encourage a comeback: Patrick explains that maybe the uncle just doesn’t realize how serious this role is. It could even inspire him to start going to Mass again. Imagine: he helps his niece AND rekindles his own faith. That’s a win-win!    What We Can Take Away From This?   Sponsors matter! They should be role models in faith, not just placeholders.   Sometimes people need a loving nudge to take their faith seriously.   God can use situations like this to bring people back to Him. Never underestimate His grace!    So, moral of the story? If you’re ever asked to be a sponsor, don’t just say yes for the photo-op. Live the role. Go to Mass, pray, grow in your faith, and help guide someone else toward Christ.

Here's the recap:   The Situation:   Samantha, a busy mom of two girls under two, loves her brother but doesn't agree with him.   Her big question: How do I protect my kids' innocence while staying compassionate toward my brother?   She doesn’t want to expose her daughters to confusion (or have to explain why "Uncle is dressed like Auntie") but is struggling with how to tell her brother he’s not invited to family gatherings like her daughter’s first birthday.   Patrick’s Wisdom:    Protect Your Kids First: He says that Samantha's instincts are 100% right. As a parent, her first responsibility is to protect her daughters. Patrick reminded her that she’ll have to answer to God someday for how she raised them and shielding them from confusion is an act of love.    Truth Over Delusion: Patrick stressed the importance of calling things what they are. A man claiming to be a woman is still a man. Period. (Matthew 19:4: "In the beginning, God made them male and female.")   Society may push false terms like "trans woman," but using them only feeds the delusion. Patrick adds that it's like telling an anorexic person they're fat when they’re dangerously thin: it doesn’t help them. Truth, even when it's hard, is the most loving approach.    Love + Boundaries: You can be loving without compromising on truth. Whether through a thoughtful letter or a face-to-face conversation, Samantha should show truth with charity.   Example: “I love you, but I won’t expose my daughters to ideas that contradict reality. I hope you understand.”   If he reacts badly? That’s on him, not her. Seeds of truth often take time to grow.    Books to Help: Patrick suggested two excellent reads for understanding this cultural madness:   When Harry Became Sally by Ryan T. Anderson 📖   Trans by Helen Joyce    Samantha’s Response:   Samantha plans to either write a heartfelt letter (because who doesn’t love old-school snail mail?) or have a tough but loving conversation. She shared that she’s already told her brother she won’t affirm his delusion, but now it’s time to be firmer about her boundaries.    Takeaway for Us All:   This is the kind of challenge many Catholic families are facing today. The culture may be in chaos, but as Patrick reminded us, truth doesn’t change. God made us male and female and affirming reality: compassionately but firmly, is an act of love.    So, if you’re in a similar boat:   Pray. Ask for wisdom and courage.   Be firm. Love isn’t afraid to set boundaries.   Stay compassionate. Speak truth but do it with gentleness and kindness.   Drop a prayer for Samantha, her family, and her brother.

Why a Train and a Paintbrush Prove God Exists (And Why Dawkins Totally Missed the Train) (Special Podcast Highlight)

bonus

Patrick Madrid explains the idea of infinite regression: basically, the concept of an endless chain of causes, and how it points to the existence of God.    The Train Analogy:   Imagine you're sitting at a train crossing, waiting for the world's longest train to pass. Car after car zooms by. Each train car is being pulled by the one in front of it, but NONE of these cars are moving under their own power. What gives?    Somewhere way up front, there HAS to be a locomotive: the unmoved mover... pulling the whole train. Without it, the entire line of train cars would be stuck. The same principle applies to the universe: you can’t have an endless line of “movers” (or causes) without something at the very beginning giving everything its first push. And that is God.    Infinite regression (the idea of “it just goes back forever, no big deal”) is, as Patrick puts it, a logical impossibility. It’s like claiming the train just goes on forever without an engine. Nope. Not happening.   The Paintbrush Analogy:   This one’s for the art fans! Imagine a paintbrush painting a canvas. The brush creates beautiful strokes, but it’s only moving because someone: a painter... is guiding it. Now, what if the brush is part of a longer stick? Let’s say it’s a foot long… or 20 feet… or as long as a football field. What if the stick just keeps going forever without a painter? That’s absurd.   The same goes for creation: if there’s no “painter” (God) behind the brush (creation), then the painting (the universe) can’t exist. God is the ultimate painter, the one who gives creation its existence and beauty.   What About Infinite Regression?   Patrick explains that atheists, like Richard Dawkins, often try to argue for some other explanation: like “dark matter” or even, hilariously, aliens seeding life on Earth. But here’s the problem: all of these “answers” just kick the can down the road. Where did the dark matter come from? Who created the aliens? It’s begging the question, a fancy philosophical term that means dodging the real issue by postponing it.    If you keep asking “what caused THAT?” at some point, you must land on an uncaused cause: something (or someone) that exists without needing a cause. That’s God. Simple as that.    The Five Ways to Prove God Exists:   Patrick gives a shoutout to Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas, who developed five logical ways to explain God’s existence. They’re not “scientific proof” like you’d see in a lab, but they’re rock-solid philosophical arguments. These “Five Ways” look at things like cause and effect, motion, contingency, and design in the universe: all of which point to a necessary first cause: God.    He recommends Peter Kreeft’s "Handbook of Catholic Apologetics" (co-authored with Fr. Ron Tacelli) as a go-to resource. If you want to strengthen your faith, it’s must-read.    Final Thoughts:   Whether it’s the train, the paintbrush, or Aquinas’ Five Ways, these are tools to help us understand why belief in God isn’t just reasonable: it’s the only explanation that makes sense.    So, the next time someone says, “But what caused God?” just smile and remind them: God is the engine, not another train car.
