John McDonnell on Keir Starmer, Labour's lack of vision - and what now for the left.

After Labour narrowly held Batley & Spen in the recent by-election, former Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell talks to me about how the party is losing voters who stuck with it in 2019, let alone failing to win over new supporters; how Muslim Labour voters feel utterly betrayed and disillusioned; how the Tories have been allowed to get away with their catastrophic handling of COVID-19, and Labour aren't setting out a clear vision; whether the left is about to be crushed by the leadership, whether Peter Mandelson is running the party - and what next for the left.Help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Can Keir Starmer turn it all around?

After Labour narrowly kept its seat in the Batley & Spen by election, Keir Starmer’s leadership has been spared any challenges. Can he now defy his critics and return to his promises of offering the political vision that is currently lacking, uniting the party and reversing the slide to electoral calamity? We're joined by John McDonnell to discuss the future of the Labour party, Ali Milani and Hamza Ali Shah to discuss Muslim disillusionment with Labour, and Young Labour Chair Jess Barnard to discuss whether young people are permanently going to be turned away.Help us take on the right-wing media here: https://www.patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Geoff Norcott on why he's right-wing, 'woke' and why he thinks I'm wrong

Geoff Norcott is that rare thing - a Tory comedian - who has written a book called WHERE DID I GO RIGHT: HOW THE LEFT LOST ME. Andy Burnham on Labour leadership ambitions, Keir Starmer, devolution and Batley & Spen

When Labour got clobbered in May's elections, Andy Burnham defined the trend by winning a landslide in Greater Manchester's mayoral elections. He tells me what Labour can learn from his success, about whether he has ambitions to replace Keir Starmer, about how devolution is Labour's routemap back, and why the people of Batley and Spen should vote for Labour's Kim Leadbeater.Help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. George Galloway on why he voted Tory and for Nigel Farage, being anti-'woke', and Batley and Spen

Former Labour MP George Galloway is one of Britain's most controversial individuals, and is standing in Batley & Spen with the slogan 'STARMER OUT'. We talk about his pitch for the seat, including Palestine - but why he's focusing his fire on the opposition, rather than the Tory government which presided over 150,000 deaths; why he campaigned alongside Nigel Farage after denouncing him; why he campaigned for Brexit after declaring that he'd campaign for Remain like "anyone with any brain cells will be doing"; why he voted Tory after declaring he'd rather remove his eyeballs; and much else.Help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. GB News has flopped

Launched to throw petrol on the raging fires of Britain's culture war and take on the BBC and Sky News, GB News has been an embarrassing flop. Technical failures have been followed by ratings in freefall, and Andrew Neil - founder and the flagship presenter - has taken himself off the air indefinitely after just two weeks. Why was it such a failure, what does it tell us about the media landscape - and is it too soon to write it off completely? We're joined by Director of CLASS think tank Ellie Mae O'Hagan and media expert Leo Watkins. Also, we talk about Matt Hancock's resignation and, with days to go until the Batley & Spen by election, things are getting tense on the ground. We talk to Oli Dugmore, head of politics at JOE, who was there this week, about the latest developments.Help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Batley and Spen: Keir Starmer's last chance?

Weeks after losing Hartlepool to the Tories, Labour has another major test in the Batley and Spen by-election. This is the constituency once represented by Jo Cox - murdered by a far right terrorist in 2016 - and it's a diverse community. But many voters feel disillusioned with the current main opposition, not least British Muslims, 86% of whom voted Labour nationally in 2019 but who feel that loyalty is not reciprocated. With the controversial George Galloway standing, some are determined to vote for him to give Labour a bloody nose. How much further does Labour's electoral coalition have to fragment as its naturally most loyal voters feel taken for granted?I visit the constituency to speak to everyone from George Galloway to Andy Burnham - presumed to be a likely successor as Labour leader - to Kim Leadbeater, Labour's candidate, to local voters to work out what's happening to the opposition - and where that leaves our crisis-stricken country.Videographer: Jack Barraclough.Help make these documentaries happen here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Will Young on growing up gay, coming out, abuse and basically being loads of fun

Will Young became a music sensation after winning Pop Idol in 2002 - and became one of the earlier pop stars to come out. We discuss his brilliant book To Be a Gay Man, about what it was like growing up gay in a profoundly homophobic society, about what he was up against when he came out, the lived experience of gay people that straight people might not know, and the uncanny parallels with the onslaught against trans people. S1 Ep 9595. Why I'm supporting BDS - and why you should too

The Palestinian people have endured over 5 decades of Israeli occupation, the longest belligerent occupation on earth. Their land is being colonised by illegal settlements on the West Bank, while Gaza is under perpetual siege. This is not just occupation, siege and colonisation: as Human Rights Watch have recently announced, this is apartheid. In Israel-proper, Palestinians are treated as third class citizens, formalised by the so-called ‘nation state law’. Since 2000, over 10,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed by Israel, nearly 8 times the number of Israelis who have been killed. In the recent Israeli onslaught against Gaza, 256 Palestinians were killed, including 66 children. Here's why I'm backing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions on Israel - including answering the questions and concerns I had, and why we owe this to the Palestinian people.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Her stunning new memoir - What It Feels Like For A Girl - documents a life that began on a Nottinghamshire council estate, the anti-LGBTQ hatred she suffered growing up, spending time in a young offender's institution, to ending up a panellist on Question Time to presenting shows on the BBC.We talk about her life - and how trans people are suffering a vicious campaign of transphobia in modern Britain.Help us take on an often hateful media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. S1 Ep 8181. The Battle for Hartlepool: is Labour heading for disaster?

With a critical by-election looming there, I headed to Hartlepool in England's North East to find out if Labour are about to lose another crucial brick in the crumbling so-called 'Red Wall'. I meet with the party's candidate, candidates standing for the Northern Independence Party and Reform, the current and former leader of the council, Labour canvassers and voters on the ground to ask - why is a seat in which Labour won a crushing victory less than 4 years ago at risk of falling out of its hands, potentially providing Boris Johnson with a critical triumph? It's a complex mix: younger voters leaving towns like this as politics polarises by age, poverty sitting side by side with economically secure retired homeowners, the Tories ploughing investment into their favoured communities, and Labour lacking any coherent vision. Is machismo and aggression really inherently part of being a man - and how can young men who want to change get help?JJ Bola has written a brilliant new book Mask Off: Masculinity Redefined, and we discuss not just how men are hurt - while women are oppressed - but how a new form of masculinity can be nurtured. S1 Ep 6767. "I genuinely thought I was evil": Gay 'conversion therapy' survivor speaks out

So-called 'conversion therapy' is a form of torture used against LGBTQ people in Britain and beyond: the human consequences are beyond horrific. Justin Beck is a survivor, who endured years of the practice at a Pentecostal Church: he tells me how he got there, the utter turmoil that was unleashed, how he was driven to the brink of suicide - and how he finally got help. He tells me about finding happiness - but about the devastating long-term consequences, and about those LGBTQ people being subjected to this torture. We talk, too, about the government's LGBTQ advisory panel being shut down - with one member accusing the Conservatives of creating a "hostile environment" for LBGTQ people - and the failure to properly end this barbaric practice.CONTENT WARNING: Suicidal ideations, extreme mental distressHelp us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. S1 Ep 6363. Should the North become independent?

The Northern Independence Party has become an online sensation, and found itself furiously denounced by Labour figures and receiving growing media attention. Is it for real? Is it just dividing working class people? Why not federalism? Is the north really a nation? What's its gameplan? Could it really do to Labour what the SNP pulled off North of the Border? If it does badly in the Hartlepool by-election, what then? So much to talk about with Philip Proudfoot, the founder of NIP.Help us take on the right wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast.
