S10 Ep 281Qatar's Leading Comedian & Cultural Icon - Hamad Al-Amari
Hamad is a Qatari comedian who grew up in Ireland, a rare commodity in the Middle East or anywhere else. Having spent time in Qatar, Southern Ireland and the US he's had a unique opportunity to experience the diversity in cultures, which helped form his identity and approach to comedy. With a broad repertoire, his experience ranges from stand-up comedy (his life's passion and deepest love!), to being a keen ambassador for children's charities, cancer awareness and local franchises, VIP corporate events and conferences, and producing online shows. Despite the humor, Hamad is quite an intense character with a very serious side, and has a strong desire to teach, help, assist and educate, all common themes in his social commentary. Obviously not a run of the mill kid, he believes in freedom of speech, saying it as it is, and spreading ones wings. Known internationally for hitting a Burger King drive-through on a camel no less, Hamad likes to break down barriers and boundaries. Where's the humor in staying confined?! On this episode, Hamad shares his one way ticket to a complete symbiotic relationship between man and technology. S10 Ep 267Tamar Haspel - Washington Post Columnist & Author of TO BOLDLY GROW
Tamar Haspel writes the James Beard Award-winning Washington Post column Unearthed, which covers the intersection of food and science: How what we eat affects us and our planet. She's also written for Discover, Vox, Slate, Fortune, Eater, and Edible Cape Cod. Together with journalist Mike Grunwald, Tamar co-hosts the Climavores podcast, which takes a good, hard, entertaining look at food's impact on climate and environment. When she's tired of the heavy lifting of journalism, she gets dirty. She and her husband, Kevin Flaherty, grow their own tomatoes, catch their own fish, hunt their own venison, and raise their own chickens. If she tells you a wild mushroom is OK to eat, you can believe her. And her book, TO BOLDLY GROW, will convince you to try it. On this episode, Tamar shares her one way ticket, with her husband Kevin, to Cape Cod, to eat "first hand food" -- where every day they eat one food they grew, hunted or fished. This entire journey is captured in her phenomenally written book, TO BOLDLY GROW, which we discuss. During the conversation, Tamar also shares the joy and satisfaction for continuously being on the steep part of the learning curve, why human nutrition is incredibly difficult to study, that there's no taste difference between fresh eggs and store bought eggs, why gardening is even more local than politics, the best way to forage for food in a city, and more. S10 Ep 265Gil Troy - Historian
A Distinguished Scholar in North American History at McGill University currently living in Jerusalem, Gil Troy is an award-winning American presidential historian and a leading Zionist activist. In the Foreword to Troy's book, The Zionist Ideas: Visions for the Jewish Homeland – Then, Now, Tomorrow, Natan Sharansky writes: "This magnificent work is the perfect follow-up to Arthur Hertzberg's classic The Zionist Idea. Combining, like Hertzberg, a scholar's eye and an activist's ear, Gil Troy demonstrates that we now live in a world of Zionist Ideas, with many different ways to help Israel flourish as a democratic Jewish state." Troy's latest book which he penned with Sharansky, is Never Alone: Prison, Politics, and My People. Recently designated an Algemeiner J-100, one of the top 100 people "positively influencing Jewish life," Troy wrote The Age of Clinton: America in the 1990s, and ten other books on the American presidency. One leading historian called Age of Clinton "the best book on the man and his times." Troy edited and updated another classic, the multi-volume History of American Presidential Campaigns, originally edited by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. and Fred Israel. He is now writing new essays on the 2012 and 2016 elections. Troy's book Moynihan's Moment: America's Fight against Zionism as Racism, describes the fall of the UN, the rise of Reagan and the spread of Anti-Zionism. Jewish Ideas Daily designated it one of 2012's "best books." He appeared as a featured commentator on CNN's popular multipart documentaries, The Eighties, The Nineties, and The 2000s. He has been interviewed on most major North American TV and Radio networks. Troy has published essays in the American, Canadian, and Israeli media, including writing essays for the New York Times' "Campaign Stops" in 2012 and 2016. He wrote a weekly column for the Daily Beast, "Secret Lives," putting current events in historical perspective, and writes a weekly column for the Jerusalem Post. On this episode, Troy shares his one way ticket to a "Free Marketplace of Ideas". In the course of our sweeping conversation, he shares the importance of listening generously vs. listening censoriously, how racialism is spreading in America today where people are defined by the color of their skin and not the content of their character, and how the word "Zionism" has sadly become hijacked. Plus, Troy points to what every successful President should possess, why there were actually six George W. Bush presidencies, and the "secret sauce" of Bill Clinton. S10 Ep 254CENTRED-Wellness Founder & CEO - Brian Chappon
Brian is the definition of a scrappy social entrepreneur and global citizen. A competitive athlete and seasoned expert in capital markets around the world, he takes an international perspective to building economic ecosystems and promoting health & wellness. Brian founded his career as a volunteer and intern with NGOs providing disaster relief. Seeing the economic impact of those environmental events led to a new focus on the need for sustainable entrepreneurship and investment ecosystems in developing countries. As a consultant and head of capital markets, he raised funds and created models to analyze high-return projects and de-risk public-private partnership investments. He built networks of insurance companies, PE/Financial service providers, governments, NGOs, and innovative projects to build wealth, jobs, and opportunities in new markets in in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The mix of extended international travel, stress, and commitment to marathon training took a toll on his health. After the recession of 2008 he hit max burnout and went from what felt like being on top of the world to becoming homeless and living in a 24-hour Starbucks in New York City. After shaking off the pain of failure Brian took a sabbatical to teach spinning in a high-end studio. During his time of reflecting he heard of the mental and physical health issues that fellow road warriors faced while traveling, and the idea to create a health studio in an airport was formed. He is now combining his passion for fitness, experience in entrepreneurship, and vision for global health to launch CENTRED-Wellness.com, the first travel health and wellness platform changing the way the world will travel during and after the global Covid-19 crises. To mark our show's 10th anniversary in March 2022, we're issuing a "one way ticket to optimal mental, physical and spiritual well-being" all month long. S9 Ep 239"The Child in the Electric Chair" - A book by Eli Faber & Forward by Carol Berkin
If there's one book you need to pick up now, it's "The Child in the Electric Chair". It tells the true story of George Junius Stinney, Jr., a 14 year old black boy who was convicted – and sent to the electric chair – for the murder of two young white girls in a 1944 South Carolina town. The story exposes the preposterous legal system in the Jim Crow south, race relations then, and leads the reader to question the real meaning of equal justice under the law. The book, which took nearly a dozen years to research and write, was the undertaking of the very thoughtful Historian, Eli Faber. When he realized he wouldn't be able to complete it due to advanced pancreatic cancer, he asked his dear friend and colleague, fellow Historian Carol Berkin, to complete the book and see it through publication. And that she did. Sadly, Eli Faber passed away before seeing the work go to print. On this episode, Carol Berkin, Presidential Professor of History, Emerita, of Baruch College & The Graduate Center, CUNY, discusses the book and all of its complexities. As our guest on episode 124, we start the conversation by having her revisit her one way ticket destination to the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention. S9 Ep 238Curtis Sliwa - NYC Mayoral Candidate & Guardian Angels Founder
Curtis Sliwa is New York City's 2021 Republican Mayoral Candidate. The general election will be held on Tuesday November 2, 2021. Born in 1954 in Canarsie, Brooklyn, to a Catholic family of Polish and Italian descent, Curtis opened the first recycling center in Brooklyn when he was 14. Known as the teenage "neighborhood junk collector," he collected empty cans, glass bottles, newspapers, and scrap metal, storing them in his basement after preparing them for recycling. At 15, while delivering newspapers, Curtis saved a family from their burning home. He made three trips into the burning building and saved six people's lives. For his heroism, he was named Newspaper Boy of the Year by the Daily News and was honored at the White House for his act by President Nixon. In the late 70's, while working as a night manager at a McDonalds in the Bronx, Curtis formed a group called the "Rock Brigade." The goal was to clean up a neglected New York City. To make up for a scarcity of police patrols, Curtis retooled the focus of the volunteer effort to fill the void in crime fighting and the group took to the subway. The 13-member, multi-racial team of volunteers became known as "The Magnificent Thirteen." The group agreed to ride the subways between the toughest stops, without weapons, to help put a stop to the crimes occurring to citizens riding the subway system. These courageous volunteers would look for gang members who had been mugging straphangers in the subway and detain them for the police to arrest. Many times, simply their presence would act as a deterrent to illegal activity. As word spread of "The Magnificent Thirteen" and their heroic deeds, more rushed to join the efforts. On February 13, 1979, Curtis created "The Guardian Angels." Volunteers of all ages go through weeks-long rigorous training, in which they learn martial arts techniques in order to defend themselves, enforce discipline, and make legal citizens' arrests, all without the use of weapons. Men and women in "The Guardian Angels" are recognizable in their bright red berets and military-like bomber jackets. These unarmed volunteers patrol the streets and subways, often in groups, keeping a watchful eye over the city. Curtis began his media career in 1990, where he started as a radio broadcaster at WABC-AM. He hosted various radio programs on WABC, and in 2000, became the co-host of the long-running Curtis and Kuby in the morning. In 1992, Curtis received the prestigious Courage of Conscience Award from the Peace Abbey at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston for his work of establishing the Guardian Angels in major cities on every continent in the world. On this episode, Curtis shares his one way ticket to the "Theatre of the Mind". He also shares his mayoral platform and life with his wife Nancy and their 16 rescue cats in a 328 sq. ft.
