S3 Ep 73What Every Man Needs | Episode 73
We’re kicking off a new season of The Noble Man Podcast talking about mentorship. This short episode packs a punch as Mike answers some of the most frequently asked questions he gets about mentoring, including: What’s the one thing every man wants and needs in his life? What’s the difference between mentorship and discipleship? What’s necessary for a good mentorship relationship? Who should be a mentor? What if you’ve made some major mistakes? Can God still use you? Can a younger guy mentor an older guy? Discipleship doesn’t happen without intentionality. Ask yourself how to have the posture of someone who is being conformed to the image of Christ. Listen and take on the mentorship challenge. Resources: Noble Warriors Mentoring Resources What is Mentorship? S2 Ep 72Tailgate Series: Where Do You Focus Your Eyes When Facing a Crisis? (Guest: Dr. Brian Autry) | Episode 72
We’ve all been going through a crisis for the last year and a half. Brian Autry, Executive Director of the SBC of Virginia, joined us at our Spring 2021 Tailgate Tour to remind us never to waste a crisis. We can say to our God, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” 2 Chronicles 20:12b Where do you focus your eyes when you have a problem? We dream of being the hero of the story, but we should be seeking the Lord. In focusing on Him, we find our hope. “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 Brian gives one of the coolest encouragements I’ve heard as he walks through what it would have taken for the children of Israel to cross the Red Sea and live in the desert. Did you ever think about what it took for them to get across in just one night? They’d have to march across 5,000 people wide, about a 3-mile-wide part in the sea! Not to mention the 11 million gallons of water, 750,000 quail, and 2 million gallons of manna they’d need daily – and so much more that God provided for them. You’ve got to hear this faith-building breakdown of his faithfulness in the desert. Our God can handle your crisis. Tune in and listen as he gives the steps we can take to keep our eyes on Him. He is the one true hero that we hand the ball off to because the battle belongs to Him. Join us for our Fall Tailgate Tour! S2 Ep 71Tailgate Series: Are You Connected to the Right Power Source? (Guest: Gordon Fields) | Episode 71
“God has preordained all of us to achieve greatness in our life, but until we get ourselves cleaned up and hooked to the right power source, we’ll never be what he wants us to be.” We live in a time when people are hooked up to the wrong power source, anything other than God. “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:18 From our Charlottesville Tailgate this past Spring, our friend Gordon Fields tells us how to maintain a strong connection to our power source. Gordon, a pastor for 30 years who now works with UVA Athletics graduate assistance through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is dedicated to investing in young athletes, leaders, and coaches. He’s lived firsthand what it’s like to have “a good battery, but a weak connection.” “We have to have a good connection with God to benefit from the power that is available to us.” What do you do when the corrosion of sin causes a clicking sound and a bad connection that keeps us from having a good connection with God? S2 Ep 70Tailgate Series: 3 Ways to Guard Your Heart (Guest: Josh Turner) | Episode 70
If you could get advice on how to make decisions from the wisest man who ever lived, would you take it? At our Waynesboro Tailgate this past Spring, Director of Church Planting for the SBC of Virginia, Josh Turner, gives us that advice from King Solomon out of Proverbs 4. “My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:20-23 The NIV states it this way, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Guard. Your. Heart. It’s the number one tip he gives. Above. All. Else. It should be the number one priority in our lives. When something needs guarding, it’s because it is valuable. In the same way, we guard our hearts because “if we lose our heart, the potential is we might lose everything.” In this episode, Josh shares three ways we can begin to guard our hearts. 1. Resist the urgency of the day for the priority of prayer. Prayer and time with the Father is the work. We can’t live off yesterday’s blessings and time with God. 2. Know who we are in Christ. “True freedom comes when we find our identity not in what other people think about us, not in how popular we are, but very clearly in Christ alone.” 3. Acknowledge we have blind spots and have friends who we give permission to speak into our lives. “Sin demands to have a man by himself.” Bonhoeffer Tune in to Josh to better understand how to make guarding your heart a priority in your life. Things can look good on the outside, but if you peer on the inside, we might be headed for disaster. “Men fall in private long before they fall in public.” J.C. S2 Ep 69Tailgate Series: Will You Conform or Transform? (Guest: Ed Gomes) | Episode 69
You can’t have it both ways. Dr. Ed Gomes, Director of Spiritual Development for Liberty Flames football and shoe-shiner extraordinaire, asks us to decide, “Have you been allowing the world to conform you, or are you allowing God to transform you?” It’s a contradiction. I can live my life the way I want to live it or the way God wants me to live it. I can do it my way and get wood, hay, and stubble, or do it God’s way and get the opposite. Dr. Gomes received his salvation at the age of 17, and from that time until now, at age 67, God gave him a new “want to.” He decided to follow Jesus no matter what, become a student of God’s Word, and allow it to transform his life. “Becoming a Christian isn’t based on something that I do, but rather it’s based on something Christ has already done.” In Romans 12:1-2, Paul offers a negative and a positive admonition to believers. Dr. Gomes helps us see how we can make every day count, allow the Word of God to permeate our thoughts, and apply it to every situation. In the last seven days, have you been in the Word? As we get closer to the end of our Tailgate Series on the Podcast, the end of one season marks the beginning of another. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. S2 Ep 68Tailgate Series: Moving From Failure to Finishing Well (Guest: Josh Turner) | Episode 68
“We may not have started well, but with Jesus we can finish well.” Sometimes we feel like a failure as a father or a husband. Josh Turner brings a message of redemption and restoration for a man who was a complete failure in God’s Word. He had no hope. He was in the darkest place. He lived in a cemetery He cut himself. “But everything changes when you meet Jesus.” If you’ve ever met anyone you thought was too far gone, or if you have ever felt like you are that guy, there is always, always, always hope in Jesus. There is no addiction, no chain too strong He can’t break. As you listen, think about who the guys are in your life right now that you are praying for or think they’ll never come to know Jesus. If God changed this guy’s life, He could change anyone’s life. People need the hope that comes only through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It only makes sense that we share that hope with all those around us and leave a Gospel legacy. “It’s more important how we finish than how we start. God wants to change us in an incredible, powerful way.” Episode 68 is part of our Tailgate Series originally shared in Danville, VA. Josh Turner is a church planter and now Director of Church Planting for the SBC of Virginia. The Fall 2021 Tailgate Tour is kicking off soon, so help us hit the road and help Noble Men connect through our August campaign, Connect the Dots with Us.
