Ep 105Raising Sons into Men - Part 2 (feat. Dean Briggs) | Episode 103
In The Noble Man Podcast Episodes 102 and 103, Mike and Dean Briggs discuss raising boys into men and how BraveQuest can help in your endeavor. Dean developed BraveQuest out of his own need for a strategic plan to guide his seven sons to manhood. Historically, cultures around the world developed rites of passage for their boys beginning around age 13, a time when they would learn to see themselves as men. Now BraveQuest fills the gap for a “biblical rite-of-passage system for fathers and sons.” We fathers know we need to be intentional about investing in our boys and raising them to be godly men, and we need to begin early enough to shape their thinking as they move into their teen years. We have the desire but often lack the creativity to make it happen. Dean has laid it out in BraveQuest; all we have to do is implement the plan. Dean suffered the loss of his first wife to cancer. His wife suffered the loss of her first husband due to a tragic accident. The Lord brought them, their seven sons, and one daughter together as a family. Out of that tragedy was born this gift that helped him work with his boys and will help you too. Sign up here for a free Father's Field Manual (includes the turnkey BraveQuest Planning Kit). Ep 103How Men Can Help Get Bibles into Schools (feat. Hannah Sailsbury) | Episode 101
An exciting movement is taking place to get Bibles in school libraries, thanks to Hannah Sailsbury. While Hannah was working as a special ed elementary teacher, she began prayer walking around her school. Those walks led to the movement to get an engaging Bible into the hands of students across the nation. Hannah discusses the need for men to engage in this work. Boys, especially, have been enthralled with the graphic nature of the Adventure Bibles. One elementary school boy loved reading it so much, especially the story of Samson, that he tried to steal the Bible to keep it. Whether you are a dad with kids in school or just a man with the heart to see Bibles in the hands of boys everywhere, you can get involved. Listen in, learn Our First Amendment Rights, and Join Bibles in Schools in spreading God’s Word to students. “So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11 Bibles in Schools Bibles in Schools - YouTube 'Bibles in Schools': Teacher's Prayer-Walk Around Public School Leads to Global Ministry | CBN News View Show Notes: NobleWarriors.org/episode101 Leave a Review: If you like what you’ve been hearing, we invite you to leave us a review. Tommy Thompson knows firsthand what it means to be overloaded and overwhelmed. He spent 35 years running multiple businesses while serving in church and raising a young family. During this time, God was preparing them for an inconceivably difficult season of seeing their beautiful young daughter suffer as she battled cancer. "We knew that the only way we would survive this incredibly painful, hard season was to double down on creating space in our lives." In this episode, Mike and Tommy discuss margin, marketplace ministry, and mobilizing guys. Learn how Tommy began to "right-size" his life and fulfill his calling to impact people's lives for good and for God. "Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand." Ep 94Football and Father Figures - Part 2 (feat. Ed Gomes) | Episode 93
Football season is almost upon us, and we are kicking off with Liberty Flames Director of Spiritual Development, Dr. Ed Gomes. Ed has been discipling young men for decades and sheds light on effectively earning the right to spiritually father young men. Mike and Ed dive into: What it looks like to build relationships with younger generations and earn the right to speak into their lives. What to do if you feel like you can’t relate. How to cast a vision for what their future could look like when they are dealing with father wounds. Why he prays for 55 young men per year to be in relationship with and how he is intentional about discipling them. How discipleship starts with making sure I am up to date with God. How to establish a pattern of faithfulness by focusing on one day at a time. How increasing faithfulness is like increasing the weight you can press. Why you shouldn’t let the enemy talk you out of trying to disciple young men. Ed discusses how it all starts with looking to Jesus as the model. “Jesus was always at the right place doing the right thing with the right people.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 More with Ed Gomes: Tailgate Series: Will You Conform or Transform? Ep 90Investing in Faithful Men (Throwback feat. Carey Bates) | Episode 89
This episode originally aired October 2020. I am joined by Carey Bates, my former pastor and a man who faithfully invested in me. We met Carey when we first moved to Richmond over 20 years ago. Before Carey even knew what discipleship really was, he started a group of men studying the Bible in his dorm room. Through the mentorship in his own life, he became passionate about reproductive discipleship. It became part of his DNA and ministry to look for the guy or the group he could invest in, and it all started when a man willing to disciple him said, “Come with me.” We often don’t feel qualified to disciple others, but Carey helps us understand that as long as we have prayer, a biblical foundation, and fellowship with other men, we’ve got what it takes to begin. He recommends many resources to help us get kicked off. While there is nothing magical about any one resource, it’s a track to run on and get you started. As you listen, I pray you gain confidence to take that first step. When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Matthew 10:19-20 “We are prompted by the Holy Spirit, but we are prepared by our mind.” Resource Recommendations: The Bible – Serendipity Bible, or check out Resources on Episode 11: The Noble Man is a Man of the Word Point Man – one of my favorites to begin with Master Life series – the resource Carey used when he began discipling me Navigator material – including The Alongsiders, 2:7, and Design for Discipleship Survival Kit by Ralph W. Chris had been inspired by one conversation he had years ago with a man in his 60s who believed his most powerful and influential days were still ahead of him. He set out to continually grow and pour into others as Christ pours into him. "One conversation that God is in the middle of can change your life." Chris is now a C12 Chair in southern Alabama. Ep 87Cross-Cultural Friendships - Part 2 (feat. Clarence Shuler) | Episode 86
Clarence Shuler is a discipler of disciplers, “a Swiss army knife of ministry,” and it all began when he was 14. A local youth pastor named Gary Chapman took a chance on him in a place and time where cross-cultural relationships were rare and challenging. “Segregation was outlawed but still being practiced.” Yet he experienced love and respect from Gary, and over five decades later, the two are still like family. The seeds of discipleship Gary planted in Clarence’s 14-year-old heart have taken root, produced fruit, and multiplied in the lives of other men. They recently co-authored the book Life-Changing Cross-Cultural Friendships. In The Noble Man Podcast Episodes 85 and 86, Clarence: highlights the keys to beginning and fostering cross-cultural friendships, describes the difference between discipleship and mentoring and how long mentoring relationships should last, discusses self-worth vs. self-worship, and talks through ways churches can value people beyond what goes skin deep, and more. Ep 85Paying it Forward (feat. Paul Henderson) | Episode 84
Paul Henderson discusses the rich heritage of fruitful mentorship in his life and how he is paying it forward to the next generation on The Noble Man Podcast. Paul’s dad taught him and his five brothers the Scriptures. He had a high school coach who breathed life and belief into him. He worked with mentors in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes who poured into him. Another mentor encouraged him to turn a challenging time in his life and career into a fruitful time seeking God, and out of that came his book, Slave No More: Conquering the Master Within. Now, as Dean of Students with Elijah House Academy in Richmond, VA, Paul actively pours into hundreds of students daily. He and his wife Kierra raise and disciple four sons together. Ep 84Teamwork Makes the Family Work (feat. Jay Payleitner) | Episode 83
Parenting takes work from both the mom and the dad. Join Mike and guest Jay Payleitner as they discuss Jay’s new book, Moms Bringing Out the Best in Dads. Noble Warriors team members Christen and Hollie participate with experience on the other side of the table, offering their perspectives as wives and moms and how everyone benefits when Mom and Dad work as a team. “Guys and gals are different,” says Jay, and he hopes to provide some insight for moms on what dads are thinking - or not thinking - and how a dad’s best resource can be his kids’ mom. You’ll gain insight, have a laugh, and maybe get a few feathers ruffled as you hear how his wife has taught him how to swaddle and learned when to roll her eyes at him. Most importantly, along the way, she figured out how to bring out the best in him as a dad. “Moms bringing out the best in dads actually brings out the best in moms as well,” says Christen. “It helps us be a better mom when we are helping our husband be a better dad, so I think it’s full circle.” Resources: Helping Dads Help Moms by Noble Warriors Moms Bringing Out the Best in Dads: Teaming Up to Help Your Family Thrive Learn more about Jay Payleitner Books by Jay Payleitner National Coalition of Ministries to Men The Story of Us: A Couples Devotional by FamilyLife View Show Notes: NobleWarriors.org/episode83 Leave a Review: If you like what you’ve been hearing, we invite you to leave us a review. Ep 83Willing to Invest (feat. Greg Beechaum) | Episode 82
Dr. Greg Beechaum,Senior Pastor of Little Zion Baptist Church in Powhatan, VA, is devoted to serving his church in every capacity, including joining the men’s choir. He doesn’t even sing, but he goes to be where the men are. Greg had the blessing of being raised around godly men, but he observed too many men around him who didn’t. Like Timothy, they had godly women, but Greg wants to see men stepping up for the generations behind them. He shares how he has figured out ways to remove excuses for men of all generations when it comes to engaging in biblical community and how all ages learn from each other regardless of their experience. “It’s not about how much you know; it’s about how much you want to invest. If you are willing to invest, age may not be so important. Both parties learn.” Everyone needs to be a mentor and to mentor someone else. It’s a cycle that never ends, no matter how old you get. Listen as they discuss bringing spiritual fathers back to the church and make it a safe place to combat one of Satan’s greatest tricks to shame men - isolation. Ep 81A Global Challenge (feat. Alex) | Episode 80
One of my pastors, Joe Tanner, introduced me to this week's unique podcast guest. Joe and Alex worked together in Central Asia for seven years, where Alex was born and raised. He had never heard the Gospel before age 14 and shares his incredible testimony, as well as a little bit about what men’s ministry is like in his home country. Alex’s story shows the impact that one faithful man can have on an entire community and what it is like to see your whole family become new creations in Christ. Alex has three preteen sons and “only one wife,” an important distinction to make in his region of the world. Only .5% of the population in Alex’s country is Christian. As you listen, I hope you’ll meditate on the power and work of the Holy Spirit, not just on this man’s life and those around him but around the globe. Please continue to pray for Alex, his family, and their ongoing ministry. “I was ready to be sought by those who did not ask for me; I was ready to be found by those who did not seek me. Ep 79Surrounded by Wise Guys (feat. Kent Evans) | Episode 79
Kent Evans ofThe Manhood Journey and Mike discuss how we need wise guys in our lives to learn from and how we can become wise guys for younger men. Kent answers some questions guys have like: Why do I have the gifts I have? What do I do with them? What is wisdom? His answers might not be what you think! He also challenges a theology problem he says many guys have that if you believe, you should just tear out every page of the Bible. Kent is a man whose life was changed when his best friend’s dad reached out to encourage him in college. He learned that you can’t become the “un-something” because life has a way of turning you into what you don’t want. Ep 78The Untapped Army (feat. Chuck Stecker) | Episode 78
In The Noble Man Podcast Episode 78, we’re talking about activating and mobilizing an untapped, undeployed army in the church – the Gen X and Boomer generations. Rev. Chuck Stecker, Executive Director and Founder of A Chosen Generation Ministry, has dedicated the past 22 years to equipping, training, empowering, and releasing a new generation of leaders, and he sees the need for intergenerational ministry in the local church. Mike and Chuck uncover some unexpected reasons older men aren’t engaging in discipleship and discuss how they can be mobilized toward mentoring and discipling. “You can’t teach what you don’t know. You can’t lead where you won’t go. And you only reproduce what you are.” Chuck didn’t know who he was or whose he was but came to the life-changing discovery that he was adopted by the King as one of his very own sons. He has encountered many men who have never been given their father’s blessing, never felt accepted as sons, and don’t know how to pass that on, but they can come to the point of healing. Listen and learn why the analogy of Passing the Baton is deceiving and how to break away from the lie that you’ve done your part. Don’t quit running. Don’t step off the track. Ep 77Mobilize Men to Disciple Boys (feat. Scott Haima) | Episode 77
What can a young man in his 20s do to have a lasting effect for the Kingdom? What could he have to offer? Listen to Episode 77 of The Noble Man Podcast to find out how a college sophomore founded Christian Service Brigade (CSB Ministries) in the 30s. Now, the 85-year-old ministry has been geared towards purposefully pointing boys to Jesus for generations, in hundreds of churches, in every state. Mike Young and Scott Haima, current President of CSB Ministries, discuss the benefits of older men being willing to mentor and disciple young men and how both are transformed in the process. CSB Ministries provides a unique and vital avenue for boys to learn to do something for Christ, not just to have something to do. The ministry is structured for a lifestyle of learning that values and attends to how God has fearfully and wonderfully made boys. "(Testosterone) is a God-given, chemical reaction in our body, and it’s not toxic.” How might you join the effort and use your passions, hobbies, and talents to raise up the next generation of healthy young men? “The reality is, God doesn’t give us men. Ep 76Filling a Gap (feat. Stephan Hicks) | Episode 76
Stephan Hicks is a prime example of a man allowing God to use his scars to empower other men in overcoming their wounds. Stephan was in his 40s when he founded My Brother’s Keeper, an organization born out of his own healing. It started with just six guys, then multiplied. “Little did I know inviting six guys into my home would turn into a non-profit organization.” My Brother’s Keeper is a group dedicated to mentoring men from 18 years old to well into their 60s. They help men handle problems across the board, such as education, employment, finances, and trauma, many resulting from a lack of fathers in the home. It is a safe place for men to talk about what they deal with, learn about their needs, and attain resources and counselors. When Stephan was introduced to Mike Young and Noble Warriors, he went through The Quest for Authentic Manhood with those first six guys. In Episode 76 of The Noble Man Podcast, hear how God has multiplied their ministry with men across the city. He continues to provide unique ways for them to meet men where they are and show Christ’s faithfulness by living out the Gospel with them daily. “Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. Ep 75The Unsuspecting Mentor (feat. Kaden & Landon) | Episode 75
When it comes to intergenerational discipleship, young men are hungry, and older men want to invest. Unfortunately, sometimes mentoring is like a middle school dance with the guys on one side of the gym and the girls on the other. Everyone wants to dance, but they don’t know how to get started. In the same way, we have to figure out how to help the generations connect in order to transfer wisdom and encouragement. Mike is joined by two younger men to discuss some of the unsuspecting mentors they have each had in their lives who may not even realize the impact they’ve had just by living a godly life and investing their time, energy, and resources into others. Are you making space and intentionally looking for these types of mentoring opportunities in your life? How can you live in such a way that you are influencing people without even suspecting it? Everyone wants it to be organic, but that still starts with someone taking initiative. Join Mike, Landon, and Kaden as they discuss how their unsuspecting mentors influenced them by seeing value in them, being intentional, and doing life as they worked together. Ep 74Intergenerational Perspectives (feat. Ben Young) | Episode 74
Who have been the formative men in your life, and how can we impact the Kingdom through mentoring? “I think there are a lot of men thirsting to share what they’ve learned in life, but I don’t think they know how to make that connection … How do we create that link between those seasoned men and the younger men?” Ben Young is passionate about bridging that gap. Ben is the youngest son of Mike and Stacy, and as a college junior, he is one of the privileged young men who can look back and see mentor after mentor who impacted his life. In this episode of The Noble Man Podcast, Ben gives his perspective on some of those mentors and the life lessons they taught him, including: How a godly man interacts with people at work. What godly marriages and godly grandparenting look like. Lessons about work, anger management, and problem-solving skills. Seeing God change a man and what that means to the legacy you leave for your family and kids. A practical approach to faith. He also shares his biggest tip on getting started with mentoring if you are unsure and why it is worth it even though he knows, “It’s not an easy thing to do, but I think it’s a good thing.” Ben echoes his dad’s number one phrase, “It all comes back to men’s discipleship.” Resources: Noble Warriors Mentoring Resources Closer Than a Brother [Podcast Ep. 61 with Brothers Tim & Zach Young] - The Noble Man Podcast Chuck Lawless on Mentoring View Show Notes: NobleWarriors.org/episode74 Leave a Review: If you like what you’ve been hearing, we invite you to leave us a review. S3 Ep 73What Every Man Needs | Episode 73
We’re kicking off a new season of The Noble Man Podcast talking about mentorship. This short episode packs a punch as Mike answers some of the most frequently asked questions he gets about mentoring, including: What’s the one thing every man wants and needs in his life? What’s the difference between mentorship and discipleship? What’s necessary for a good mentorship relationship? Who should be a mentor? What if you’ve made some major mistakes? Can God still use you? Can a younger guy mentor an older guy? Discipleship doesn’t happen without intentionality. Ask yourself how to have the posture of someone who is being conformed to the image of Christ. S2 Ep 72Tailgate Series: Where Do You Focus Your Eyes When Facing a Crisis? (Guest: Dr. Brian Autry) | Episode 72
We’ve all been going through a crisis for the last year and a half. Brian Autry, Executive Director of the SBC of Virginia, joined us at our Spring 2021 Tailgate Tour to remind us never to waste a crisis. We can say to our God, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” 2 Chronicles 20:12b Where do you focus your eyes when you have a problem? We dream of being the hero of the story, but we should be seeking the Lord. In focusing on Him, we find our hope. “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 Brian gives one of the coolest encouragements I’ve heard as he walks through what it would have taken for the children of Israel to cross the Red Sea and live in the desert. Did you ever think about what it took for them to get across in just one night? They’d have to march across 5,000 people wide, about a 3-mile-wide part in the sea! Not to mention the 11 million gallons of water, 750,000 quail, and 2 million gallons of manna they’d need daily – and so much more that God provided for them. You’ve got to hear this faith-building breakdown of his faithfulness in the desert. Our God can handle your crisis. Tune in and listen as he gives the steps we can take to keep our eyes on Him. He is the one true hero that we hand the ball off to because the battle belongs to Him. Join us for our Fall Tailgate Tour! S2 Ep 71Tailgate Series: Are You Connected to the Right Power Source? (Guest: Gordon Fields) | Episode 71
“God has preordained all of us to achieve greatness in our life, but until we get ourselves cleaned up and hooked to the right power source, we’ll never be what he wants us to be.” We live in a time when people are hooked up to the wrong power source, anything other than God. “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:18 From our Charlottesville Tailgate this past Spring, our friend Gordon Fields tells us how to maintain a strong connection to our power source. Gordon, a pastor for 30 years who now works with UVA Athletics graduate assistance through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is dedicated to investing in young athletes, leaders, and coaches. He’s lived firsthand what it’s like to have “a good battery, but a weak connection.” “We have to have a good connection with God to benefit from the power that is available to us.” What do you do when the corrosion of sin causes a clicking sound and a bad connection that keeps us from having a good connection with God? S2 Ep 70Tailgate Series: 3 Ways to Guard Your Heart (Guest: Josh Turner) | Episode 70
If you could get advice on how to make decisions from the wisest man who ever lived, would you take it? At our Waynesboro Tailgate this past Spring, Director of Church Planting for the SBC of Virginia, Josh Turner, gives us that advice from King Solomon out of Proverbs 4. “My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:20-23 The NIV states it this way, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Guard. Your. Heart. It’s the number one tip he gives. Above. All. Else. It should be the number one priority in our lives. When something needs guarding, it’s because it is valuable. In the same way, we guard our hearts because “if we lose our heart, the potential is we might lose everything.” In this episode, Josh shares three ways we can begin to guard our hearts. 1. Resist the urgency of the day for the priority of prayer. Prayer and time with the Father is the work. We can’t live off yesterday’s blessings and time with God. 2. Know who we are in Christ. “True freedom comes when we find our identity not in what other people think about us, not in how popular we are, but very clearly in Christ alone.” 3. Acknowledge we have blind spots and have friends who we give permission to speak into our lives. “Sin demands to have a man by himself.” Bonhoeffer Tune in to Josh to better understand how to make guarding your heart a priority in your life. Things can look good on the outside, but if you peer on the inside, we might be headed for disaster. “Men fall in private long before they fall in public.” J.C. S2 Ep 69Tailgate Series: Will You Conform or Transform? (Guest: Ed Gomes) | Episode 69
You can’t have it both ways. Dr. Ed Gomes, Director of Spiritual Development for Liberty Flames football and shoe-shiner extraordinaire, asks us to decide, “Have you been allowing the world to conform you, or are you allowing God to transform you?” It’s a contradiction. I can live my life the way I want to live it or the way God wants me to live it. I can do it my way and get wood, hay, and stubble, or do it God’s way and get the opposite. Dr. Gomes received his salvation at the age of 17, and from that time until now, at age 67, God gave him a new “want to.” He decided to follow Jesus no matter what, become a student of God’s Word, and allow it to transform his life. “Becoming a Christian isn’t based on something that I do, but rather it’s based on something Christ has already done.” In Romans 12:1-2, Paul offers a negative and a positive admonition to believers. Dr. Gomes helps us see how we can make every day count, allow the Word of God to permeate our thoughts, and apply it to every situation. In the last seven days, have you been in the Word? As we get closer to the end of our Tailgate Series on the Podcast, the end of one season marks the beginning of another. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. S2 Ep 68Tailgate Series: Moving From Failure to Finishing Well (Guest: Josh Turner) | Episode 68
“We may not have started well, but with Jesus we can finish well.” Sometimes we feel like a failure as a father or a husband. Josh Turner brings a message of redemption and restoration for a man who was a complete failure in God’s Word. He had no hope. He was in the darkest place. He lived in a cemetery He cut himself. “But everything changes when you meet Jesus.” If you’ve ever met anyone you thought was too far gone, or if you have ever felt like you are that guy, there is always, always, always hope in Jesus. There is no addiction, no chain too strong He can’t break. As you listen, think about who the guys are in your life right now that you are praying for or think they’ll never come to know Jesus. If God changed this guy’s life, He could change anyone’s life. People need the hope that comes only through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It only makes sense that we share that hope with all those around us and leave a Gospel legacy. “It’s more important how we finish than how we start. God wants to change us in an incredible, powerful way.” Episode 68 is part of our Tailgate Series originally shared in Danville, VA. Josh Turner is a church planter and now Director of Church Planting for the SBC of Virginia. The Fall 2021 Tailgate Tour is kicking off soon, so help us hit the road and help Noble Men connect through our August campaign, Connect the Dots with Us. Thank you for helping us point men to Jesus and launch small groups all over the state!
