Her favorite books? Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Night Night Little Pookie were two of her favorites. And then one day she disappeared. Dana MacKay was born in Los Angeles, California, on February 12 1956. Dana had a daughter, Misty, born around 1980, with a woman named Alifonsa. Dana was a well known personality in Las Vegas in the late 70’s and through the 80’s. Dana was the image of the King, and even in candid family photos he looks like he could pass for Elvis. He didn’t just look like Elvis, he sounded like him, too. Dana was able to perform the king's hits with a backup band and his own vocals. He eventually decided to hang up his white rhinestone jumpsuit and focus on his other passion which was landscaping. However, Dana wouldn’t be able to fulfill his new dream of running a successful landscaping business. This is his story. In late April of 2010, 23-year-old Aubrey Sacco was in the last stretch of a solo trek she’d made to Asia following her graduation from the University of Colorado. Aubrey, a beautiful, artistic, and soulful young lady, wasn’t fearful of traveling alone. She made friends in foreign countries, playing soccer with locals, tutoring schoolchildren, and practiced yoga with new friends. On April 21st, Aubrey made her way into the Langtang National Park in Nepal, promising her parents that this hike through the Himalayas wouldn’t take more than 7-10 days, and that she’d email them as soon as she returned. Her email never came. Aubrey disappeared after leaving a small lodge and never reached her destination. More than 10 years later, there are still no clues as to what happened to Aubrey or where she might be. This is her story No evidence has ever been found to indicate that Aubrey was the victim of foul play. She remains missing. Tracy Eileen Ocasio was born on August 10, 1981 to parents Liz and Joe and was described as being, “daddy’s little girl.” Her parents said that Tracy was able to make friends anywhere because she was “open and tended to trust people quickly.” Despite this, Tracy remained close to her family, especially her mom, even as an adult. Her disappearance would be the catalyst to putting a horrible man behind bars and to getting justice for everyone but herself. This is her story. Laci was born on the 4th of May 1975 to Sharon and Dennis Rocha. Later, her mother married Laci’s stepfather, Ron Grantski. Her biological father owned a dairy farm and Laci spent a lot of time there growing up. In the quiet gated community of Great Waters in Eatonton, Georgia, 85 miles east of Atlanta, lived Russell and Shirley Dermond. As per their website, Great Waters is part of Reynolds Lake Oconee; a luxury golf and lakefront community boasting 12,000 acres of lakefront property, six golf courses, 11 restaurants, as well as recreational and culinary amenities befitting a world-class private club. This was the perfect retirement location for the Dermonds as Russell was an avid golfer and Shirley was a keen gardener. With a crime rate of zero, they felt safe and could enjoy their days in their hard earned dream home. 22-year-old Jennifer Servo had just moved to Abilene, Texas from northwest Montana, after finally landing a job that she’d dreamed of since she was a little girl. Less than three months after her big move, on September 18th, 2002, Jennifer was found dead in her apartment, with very little evidence as to who took the life of the smart, headstrong, and creative young journalist. He went on to get his bachelors in microbiology from Ohio State University, and then started medical school at OSH. Brian earned excellent grades and was on track to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor. One night during Spring break he went missing, seemingly without a trace. This is his story. Brian Shaffer would be 44 years old. He is a caucasian male with light brown hair and hazel eyes with a black spot on his left iris. He is 6’2'' and was 165 pounds at the time of his disappearance. Emmilee Renae Risling was born on February 19, 1989 to parents Gary and Judy Risling. She has a sister named Mary and was raised in Northern California. Her family lived on California’s coast line, near the city of Arcata. Emmilee took her Hupa duties very seriously and was proud of her Native American heritage. She would sing and dance in traditional ceremonies and even participated in a march in Washington DC as a teenager to celebrate the opening of the Smithonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. The celebration drew national attention and she was even featured on the front page of the Washington Post. When she was 15, she was the vice president of the Native American club at her high school and was quoted as saying, “My culture is really important to me. That’s the way I’ve been raised.” This is her story. Emmilee is 5’ 3”, 140 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. Amber Rene Hagerman was born on November 25, 1986. In 1996 she was in the third grade and attended Berry Elementary School in Arlington, Texas. She loved the Disney princess Pocahontas, playing with Barbie dolls and teddy bears, and riding her bike. Amber was extremely close to her family, she adored her mother Donna and her younger brother Ricky. Hers is a story that led an entire society to rethink safety and create legislation that has saved hundreds of children’s lives. In 1988, on a beautiful day in Belen, New Mexico, a 19-year-old woman got ready to do one of her favorite things: her daily bike ride. She put on a white t-shirt with the local bank’s logo on it, white shorts with green stripes, and white sneakers. She grabbed her bright yellow Walkman with a Boston cassette tape. Before leaving home on a neon pink mountain bike, she told her mom, “Come and get me if I’m not back by noon.” It was the same route she took everyday. At some point, the route she knew by heart - took a terribly wrong turn. The punctual college student did not make it back by noon. No one could predict that this daily exercise routine that brought her so much joy would haunt her name and her family for the rest of their lives. It’s now been 35 years since that fateful bike ride and the mystery of what happened to her has never been answered. Her name is Tara Calico. This is her story. Roxanne Paltauf said goodbye to her family after 4th of July celebrations to be with her boyfriend. The two were going to spend a few days together at a motel in the rougher part of town. In January of 2007, 37-year-old Karen Bodine was found at the entrance of an old, gravel quarry in Rochester, Washington—a small town an hour outside of Seattle. A passing motorist discovered Karen’s nude body posed in a prone position with her head resting on a vehicle seat as if it were a pillow. It’s been 16 years, and we still don’t know who killed Karen Bodine. In fact, the Lacey Sheriff's department isn’t any closer to finding the person or persons responsible than they were almost two decades ago. That’s because the investigation began with shoddy police work, and the media either printed misinformation about who Karen was or refused to cover it altogether. Karen’s family hasn’t given up hope though. They continue to fight for justice every single day; they believe someone knows something and won’t stop until they know who’s responsible. Paige and I spoke to Karen’s oldest child, Karlee, who was just 18-years-old when her mother was murdered. She told us all about Karen’s life and her unsolved murder. Her name was Karen Bodine. An eerie photo of a young woman standing alone on the edge of a dark deserted highway has come to symbolize this growing crisis in Mexico- the disappearance and murder of women. It sparked a fire among women and activists in a country where women’s disappearances and murders are often downplayed or ignored altogether. The case we’re going to talk about today knocked a safe, San Francisco suburb to its knees. As one friend of the victim put it, “it broke the shell of safety.” Jenny Lin was 14 years old in May 1994 when her parents weren’t able to reach her at home, where she was supposed to be after school. As the workday came to an end, her father arrived home. The TV was on, but the house was empty. Calling for his younger daughter, he heads up the stairs, and it quickly set in something was wrong when he noticed the primary bedroom’s bathroom door was closed. If the name Phil Hartman doesn’t already ring a bell for you, I have no doubt you'll be familiar with at least some of his work. He was a writer, actor, and comedian. Notably, in his career, he co-created Pee-wee Herman, and landed a spot on SNL where he thrived for 8 seasons, during which he became well-loved for his impersonation of Bill Clinton. Phil was a comedy genius who no doubt had years of making people laugh ahead of him. Unfortunately, the world lost one of it’s most talented entertainers, when he was murdered by the person to whom he promised “til death do us part.” This is his story. There’s perhaps no more well-known missing person’s case than that of three-year-old Madeleine McCann who went missing from a Portuguese holiday resort in 2007. Tuesday July 19th 2016 began as any other for twenty year old, Sierah Joughin.She spent the day at home with before heading off to visit her boyfriend Josh in the early evening. She said goodbye to her mom, hopped on her new purple bicycle that she got at a garage sale to enjoy the fresh, country air while as she rode the 7 miles to Josh’s house. When Sierah was ready to return home around 6:30 she hopped back on her bike, and Josh followed along on his motorcycle. The two took a selfie as they rode, capturing the memory of a fun, summer night. At about 6:45PM Sierah tells Josh she’s good to ride the rest of the way home on her own. The case I have for you today is the murder of JonBenét Ramsey, which has been the most requested by our listeners since Paige and I started The Murder Diaries.
