In June of 2013, Tempe, Arizona was rocked when 19-year old college student Adrienne Salinas disappeared. Two months later, her remains were found in the desert, thirty miles away. Today on the Murder Diaries, we have the ever-inspiring Jane Boroski, who survived an attempted murder attack by the still unidentified Connecticut river valley killer. Her life was forever altered on what started out as a typical August day in 1988. 22-year-old Jane was seven months pregnant and making her way home from an evening at a local summer fair in New Hampshire. She made a pit stop at a convenience store to grab a soda and was assaulted after a strange man approached her car. Jane and her unborn daughter were left for dead after being stabbed 27 times. According to the National Institute of Justice, the majority of missing person cases are solved and the majority of the cases solved bring victims back alive. In 2012, for example, around 659,000 of the 661,000 missing persons cases reported that year were resolved by the end of the year. But what happens when cases aren’t solved within a year? Or five years? Ten years? What happens when a case has been cold for 45 years? Today we are discussing one such case. It is the case of a young man, the family who maintained that he would come home, and a niece who decided to fight for a resolution. His name is Brian Vargo. This is his story. We were privileged in being able to speak with Brian’s niece Amanda, the daughter of one of Brian’s older brothers, for this episode. Although Amanda never met her uncle, she was able to tell us about his upbringing and personality based on her own research. In August of 2000, 23-year-old Welsh backpacker Kirsty Jones was just two months into the year-long trip of a lifetime: backpacking through Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. After having dinner with new friends, Kirsty did some shopping at a local bazaar, then made the short walk back to the guest house she was staying at in Chiang Mai in the country of Thailand. The next afternoon, Kirsty was found dead inside of her room, strangled and sexually assaulted. Despite DNA being found at the scene, Thai police allowed the room to be contaminated over and over, sinking the investigation before it even started. 23 years later, Kirsty will never have justice in the court system. Yolanda Bindics disappeared after a routine shift at work on August 10, 2004. Two years later her skeletal remains were found in a wooden area over two dozen miles from where she was last seen. The news coverage on her case has been minimal and at times inaccurate. The police department’s communication and cooperation with her family was rocky. And yet, almost 20 years later, her siblings are still fighting tirelessly for their sister, and now, Yolanda's daughter Alley is joining them. Her name is Yolanda Bindics. This is her story. On June 27, 1995, 27 year old Jodi Huisentruit was supposed to be at the news station at 3:00am. When Jodi wasn’t there by 4:00am, the producer called Jodi and woke her up. Jodi said she overslept and would be in ASAP. When Jodi didn’t show up for the 6:00 newscast, the producer filled in for the hour show. When the newscast was over, the producer asked a coworker to call the police to do a welfare check. When police arrived at Jodi’s apartment complex, they saw signs of a struggle in the parking lot - it was pretty obvious that Jodi had been abducted. Police have never named any suspects or made any arrests in Jodi’s case. Her body has never been found, although she was declared legally dead in 2001. This is her story. In the fall of 2019 Tiffany Booth was starting anew. She’d moved states, had a job that she enjoyed and was about to meet a man who she thought she could spend the rest of her life with. Dana MacKay was born in Los Angeles, California, on February 12 1956. Dana had a daughter, Misty, born around 1980, with a woman named Alifonsa. Dana was a well known personality in Las Vegas in the late 70’s and through the 80’s. Dana was the image of the King, and even in candid family photos he looks like he could pass for Elvis. He didn’t just look like Elvis, he sounded like him, too. Dana was able to perform the king's hits with a backup band and his own vocals. He eventually decided to hang up his white rhinestone jumpsuit and focus on his other passion which was landscaping. However, Dana wouldn’t be able to fulfill his new dream of running a successful landscaping business. This is his story. In late April of 2010, 23-year-old Aubrey Sacco was in the last stretch of a solo trek she’d made to Asia following her graduation from the University of Colorado. Aubrey, a beautiful, artistic, and soulful young lady, wasn’t fearful of traveling alone. She made friends in foreign countries, playing soccer with locals, tutoring schoolchildren, and practiced yoga with new friends. On April 21st, Aubrey made her way into the Langtang National Park in Nepal, promising her parents that this hike through the Himalayas wouldn’t take more than 7-10 days, and that she’d email them as soon as she returned. Her email never came. Aubrey disappeared after leaving a small lodge and never reached her destination. More than 10 years later, there are still no clues as to what happened to Aubrey or where she might be. This is her story No evidence has ever been found to indicate that Aubrey was the victim of foul play. She remains missing. Tracy Eileen Ocasio was born on August 10, 1981 to parents Liz and Joe and was described as being, “daddy’s little girl.” Her parents said that Tracy was able to make friends anywhere because she was “open and tended to trust people quickly.” Despite this, Tracy remained close to her family, especially her mom, even as an adult. Her disappearance would be the catalyst to putting a horrible man behind bars and to getting justice for everyone but herself. This is her story. Laci was born on the 4th of May 1975 to Sharon and Dennis Rocha. Later, her mother married Laci’s stepfather, Ron Grantski. Her biological father owned a dairy farm and Laci spent a lot of time there growing up. In the quiet gated community of Great Waters in Eatonton, Georgia, 85 miles east of Atlanta, lived Russell and Shirley Dermond. As per their website, Great Waters is part of Reynolds Lake Oconee; a luxury golf and lakefront community boasting 12,000 acres of lakefront property, six golf courses, 11 restaurants, as well as recreational and culinary amenities befitting a world-class private club. This was the perfect retirement location for the Dermonds as Russell was an avid golfer and Shirley was a keen gardener. With a crime rate of zero, they felt safe and could enjoy their days in their hard earned dream home. 22-year-old Jennifer Servo had just moved to Abilene, Texas from northwest Montana, after finally landing a job that she’d dreamed of since she was a little girl. Less than three months after her big move, on September 18th, 2002, Jennifer was found dead in her apartment, with very little evidence as to who took the life of the smart, headstrong, and creative young journalist. Brian Randall Shaffer was born on February 25th, 1979 to parents Renee and Randy Shaffer. He went on to get his bachelors in microbiology from Ohio State University, and then started medical school at OSH. Brian earned excellent grades and was on track to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor. One night during Spring break he went missing, seemingly without a trace. This is his story. Brian Shaffer would be 44 years old. He is a caucasian male with light brown hair and hazel eyes with a black spot on his left iris. He is 6’2'' and was 165 pounds at the time of his disappearance. He was last seen wearing an olive green short-sleeved polo shirt over a white long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, white Adidas sneakers, and a yellow rubber cancer awareness bracelet. He has a Pearl Jam symbol on his right bicep. Emmilee Renae Risling was born on February 19, 1989 to parents Gary and Judy Risling. She has a sister named Mary and was raised in Northern California. Her family lived on California’s coast line, near the city of Arcata. Emmilee took her Hupa duties very seriously and was proud of her Native American heritage. She would sing and dance in traditional ceremonies and even participated in a march in Washington DC as a teenager to celebrate the opening of the Smithonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. The celebration drew national attention and she was even featured on the front page of the Washington Post. When she was 15, she was the vice president of the Native American club at her high school and was quoted as saying, “My culture is really important to me. That’s the way I’ve been raised.” This is her story. Emmilee is 5’ 3”, 140 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes.
