035 Floss Bar: A polarizing future for Dentistry!

E

What an episode we have in store today! If you aren’t living under a rock or neck deep in pathology books (which you might be) then you have probably heard about the new “Floss Bar”. According to their website, “Floss Bar is a lifestyle brand empowering consumers to take back their power in the dental chair. It’s a network of actual dental offices we banded together, all run similarly, working to disrupt the industry by offering choice. ”Those choices are things like having exams, x rays, and other things usually required. So if that doesn’t sound polarizing I don’t know what is. Actually typing that I am kind of wondering when us a dentists took the choice away to begin with. Anyway, this episode is sure to get some attention. I do want to thank Eva Sadej the founder for coming on and talking with us about Floss Bar. It was a very interesting episode and I think she will be very successful. Hopefully, we encouraged to work on a couple things! Please send us your thoughts, spread the episode, and like us on instagram and facebook! Sully

034 Are You Numb Yet, with Dr. Don Murry

E

This episode is really what the whole podcast is about. Myself and the Holeshot(Dr. Dan) who has been MIA for a couple weeks is back interview Dr. Don Murry. Donny and I met at a CE event back in the summer and totally hit off. He is 2010 grad who is just making waves. He is starting his own CE series around golf and good times! I will actually be speaking March 10th and 11th on cerec restorations and 3d printing at one of his events! The episode is really just a glimpse into what the life after dental school is like. Meeting other motivated individuals, developing relationships, and sharing what’s working and what’s not working. He talks about what has worked in his practice, what hasn’t worked, and what he wants to do to keep pushing it. Make sure to check out his website https://www.areyounumbyet.com/ and his courses because they are going to be awesome! Also, Donny has the Are You Numb Yet podcast, which is great! So check it out!

033 Sameer Puri's Journey

E

Well, I got kind of lazy and didn’t edit any of those episodes so we missed a week. But, just like any good team we are coming out of the off week with a bang! This week we have Sameer Puri on the podcast to talk about his journey from dental school at USC to AEGD at Tennessee and on to a failed practiced, a thriving practice, and now his role at Spear Education with Cerec Doctors. As a cerec user myself I was pumped to get to talk with Sam. I think you will find the episode has a lot to offer the new graduate and new dentist. Of course we had a good conversation about cad/cam and its use in dentistry. If you’re not a cerec user don’t just skip this episode because he has a great story and I promise its not a cerec homer episode! Thanks for sharing the podcast, leaving us reviews, and giving us feedback! All your comments we get through the website make it all worthwhile! -Sully

032 Implant Ninja, the Prosthodontics Samurai, and the future of dental specialists

E

Great episode this week that was very educational for me. We have talked a lot over the course about the general dentist being able to do more and more because of technology. In this episode we talk to two prosthodontists who are absolutely killing it. Its a glimpse into what the future of their specialty looks like. And trust me, this aint your granddads specialty or the one you saw while in dental school. Dr. Ivan Chicchon is a prosthodontist out of California that is doing all sorts of implant work. He is created a book with the help of some of his colleagues called the “All-On-X Handbook” A book I have already purchased! He is giving a special discount to all of our listeners. Go to www.implantninja.com/podcast and you can get 35% off. Dr. Naif Sinada is a prosthodontist currently located in Texas and is doing some insane stuff. He just started his own podcast called “Dental Outliers”. Make sure to check it out! We would love your review on iTunes and keep spreading the word. -Sully

031 Late Night Round Table

E

This episode is totally different from the usual episodes we have. And frankly, I think its pure gold! A month or two ago I had an opportunity to be a part of a mastermind weekend with a lot of talented individuals currently in dentistry and names you are going to be hearing more of in the future. We talked about multiple practice ownership, bringing specialists in, the importance of setting goals, but most importantly how to accomplish your goals, and the importance of being around like-minded people. It’s a late night round table with Dr. Tarun Agarwal, Dr. Meena Barsoum, Dr. John Pasicznyck, Dr. Erin Elliott, Hootan Shahidi, and myself. It sheds light onto how going to continuing education has allowed me to meet so many great people and how some of them have become such mentors to me. Its late night conversations like this that don’t happen with virtual continuing education. I am lucky because not only have I learned stuff to help m practice, but I also have new friends in the industry. I think it’s an episode you can take a lot away from. I hope you enjoy! -Sully

030 Money, Drugs, and Embezzlement with David Harris

E

Well, it turns out the three of us know absolutely nothing about embezzlement, hiring, or firing! But seriously, this was a very eye opening for all of us as I am sure it will be for you. David Harris is a private investigator, cpa, and now embezzlement specialist in Dentistry. In this episode, he points out a lot of eye opening facts and figures on dental embezzlement. It’s a real deal and could be affecting you right now! He is super open and candid about what we need to do and how we can avoid being embezzled from. David’s company, Prosperident is all about helping dentists avoid this. If you personally have a suspicion that something is going on I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his company to investigate. They do it in a very stealth way that is completely hidden from everyone. He actually is giving our listeners a questionnaire that usually runs $129 through the end of 2017. Its free here, https://www.prosperident.com/prosperidents-embezzlement-risk-assessment-questionnaire/. -David’s Contact info -888-398-2237 [email protected]

029 Battle of the In-Office Membership Plans

E

In this episode we combined two different episdoes into one master episode. We actually talk with three people. First off we talked with Jordon Comstock who started Boomcloud an in office membership plan software and Ben Tuinei who started Veritas Dental Resources. Veritas is a company that deals with adding, dropping, and analyzing your insurance companies and even negotiating higher fees. Together both Jordon and Ben host a podcast that I would encourage you to listen to called “Navigating Dental Insurance”. It was a treat doing a joint podcast with these guys who are super informative and knowledgeable about both issues. We personally have been looking into these types of things and so it was very helpful. The back half of the episode we talked with a company called Privvy, who does a very similar thing that Boomcloud does. Emile Barraza and Abi Sheshadri the co founders joined us to talk about how there company differs. Privvy is a start up and is much smaller than Boomcloud, but does have a lower entry cost. Boomcloud has a higher entry cost but much more experience. It will be interesting to see how these companies continue to do and I would encourage to look into both of them!

028 Chicken mc "Nuggets" with Dr. Howard Farran

E

If you have been in dentistry for at least an hour you have probably heard of Dr. Howard Farran. Known for being the creator of the largest dental forum online, DentalTown, and the Townie Meeting held every year in Vegas. If you want a straight shooting, business savvy, uncensored approach to getting off to a good start in your dental career…takes a listen! Personally for Peyman and I this was a really fun episode. We actually were fortunate enough to see and meet Dr. Farran at Tennessee my second year of dental school. He was one of the first people to inspire me to look beyond just the clinical part of dentistry and at the business side. To get to interview him and bounce ideas back and forth was a neat moment for us! I hope you enjoy the episode, make sure to follow his podcast “Dentistry Uncensored”, share the episode, and I would encourage you if your not already to become a member of DentalTown.

027 How I got paid $5,000 for an Oral Appliance with Hootan Shahidi

E

When we started trying to do medical billing the majority of my team and dentists in our area said we didn’t have a good chance of getting paid. Well, after a couple months of now using Code and getting things processed we have gotten a couple different claims paid and a bunch more in the pipeline. The standout is obviously the $5,000 check for a sleep appliance. I knew that in our office we couldn’t take on more roles in office and that if we wanted to be successful we would need to team up with a third party. That’s when I met Hootan and Code. I can honestly say that they have been great to work with and we wouldn’t be successful without them. In this episode we talk about the nuances of medical billing, where you can get paid, and the best approach to doing it. Its super informative but only touches the iceberg. You can find out more by attending one of his conferences, dinners, or courses in Raleigh at the 3d-dentists.com. His fees are super affordable at $1,000 for initial start up and only 8% of claims actually paid. His website is Code!

026 Adventures in Austin

E

One of the best parts about being an owner and a dentist is being able to travel around with dental buddies, learn from each other, and write it all off! A couple of weeks ago The Holeshot and I flew down to Austin with four other dentists and an attorney to meet up with 2 local dentists. We rented a house on the lake, talked about dentistry, drank some beer, and had a great time! This episode is a compilation of two of the times we recorded driving to and from Top Golf. Our first Roadcast if you will! Content wise I thought it was really good, we had Dr. Jeff Alford who is an Oral Surgeon in Austin, Dr. Alec Rice, an Orthodontist in Nashville, Dr. Jeff Riggs an Oral Surgeon in Nashville, and then we had our resident attorney Clay Lee from Nasvhille. We talked about everything from getting into a specialty, to finding a job, to a really good conversation on opoid addiction and what we can do to help and not get in legal trouble! Take a listen and enjoy this laid back good time!!! Work Harder Not Smarter! -Sully

025 Trust your gut and swallow your pride with Dr. John Pasicznyk

E

In this episode we hear how Dr. JohnnyP went from dropping our of his residency program after 3 months of being there and backing out on a practice purchase in the last hour, to owning multiple practices with the latest technology. It was great having a super candid conversation about the defining moments looking back on his 7 year career so far. This is a great episode for new dentists because he shares about how making tough decisions defined his path. Not to mention what life as associate was like before owning a practice and then having to now hire associates. It’s a great perspective. We also talked about investing in yourself, technology, and being a risk taker. Take a listen and make sure to check out his website www.evodds.com and shot him an email with questions or if your looking for a job at [email protected]. Seriously, if you’re a new graduate looking for a great opportunity near Indianapolis you should give him call! Thanks everybody! –Sully

024 Wisdom from an old Millennial, aka Baron Grutter

E

After a delicious meal at Chipotle Peyman and I sat down and got to talk with Dr. Baron Grutter who is a Michigan native currently practicing in the Midwest. I loved this episode because it really answers so many of the questions new dentists have and we get to see how things unfolded for him looking back in hindsight on everything. Questions such as dealing with debt, buying equipment for practice, buying a second office, hiring associates are just some of the stuff we got into. And if that’s not enough we also hit on all the exciting things Baron has his hands in currently on the technology side. Baron is a part of the Blue Sky Bio team an open source software for all things implants, 3D printing, and now aligners for ortho. He currently teaches a number of courses on these subjects. For more info check his website out at www.BSPOrthoTraining.com to find out more about when courses are available! Thanks again for listening and keep spreading the word!

023 Lots of student loans? Then Corporate Dentistry isn’t the answer!

E

Sticking with the theme of good value for the money on consulting we follow up Laura Hatch with Travis Hornsby, founder of Student Loan Planner. Obviously student loans are getting out of hand and its probably the number 1 question students/new graduates have questions about. In this episode we dive right into the issues of how this happened, how to pay them off, and the options in which to do it. I have to admit I was skeptical about this interview when we set up but was blown away with Travis. His wife is an MD so he has a unique relationship to the medial field. In addition, his fees for analyzing your loans and giving non-biased advice are super reasonable. His flat fees are $199 for an individual and $299 for a couple where they both have debt. Reality is financial advisors and your family friend is probably the worst places to go to get advice on this subject. This is a great episode to share with friends! Below are some resources Travis gave me and remember to check us out at www.millennialdentist.com Free dental school loan calculator download https://www.studentloanplanner.com/free-student-loan-calculator/ Refinancing guide for all the places dentists want to check for rates: https://www.studentloanplanner.com/refinance-student-loans/

022 I Have No Clue How to Manage the Front Office….HELP!

E

When we all graduate we really have no clue how to run a business, manage a team, or even train the team. Frankly, we are just trying to all figure out how to do the dentistry and keep our heads above water! Consultants and in office training can be super expensive and takes up time when you could be seeing patients. We don’t usually promote individual companies, but Front Office Rocks is an excellent resource for young dentists. 7-10 minute videos on everything related to dealing with insurance, the disgruntled patient, and answering the phone. All for $149.00 a month with no contract! All three of us have signed up and have been thrilled with the results! Thanks for listening and as always we love to hear feedback/questions you have! Also if you haven’t yet follow us on Facebook and Instagram because we do a lot of live videos, post cases, and give aways!

E

Welcome back everyone! After a month off of some summer fun and activities we are getting back on our normal weekly release schedule. The last month has been all about getting really good content and interviewing lots of smarter people than us! We’re excited about the fall slate of episodes. In this episode, Dr. Peyray, Dr. Dan, my partner/father, and I answer a couple questions on topics that we have gotten from a number of people. IV vs conscious sedation, how to communicate better with older patients and team members, treatment planning, and how much a new graduate should be spending on CE among other things. If you got a minute please head over to Itunes and leave us a review, make sure to spread the word about the podcast, and if your interested in some Millennial Dentist Swag hit us up on our website, www.millennialdentist.com.

E

The plan is to take about a month off and really gather good content, hear from you and get your feedback, and frankly enjoy some time away from editing! Please be in touch and share with your friends! We will see you in August!!!

019 Find ways to love what you do with Dr. Brian Harris

E

Virtual consults, test-drive makeovers, and personal branding have all been huge parts to Dr. Brian Harris’ early success! Although he isn’t a millennial he is leading the charge in the progressive ever changing landscape of dentistry. For instance, turning the idea that you can’t have a practice built on 25-35 year olds upside down! Dr. Brian runs a practice in Arizona specifically designed around Smile design and Smile Makeovers! He works about three days a week and lectures and teaches on the side. You can check out his website at DrBrianHarris.com to find out more about his style of practice and the courses he offers! 018 Teaming up with your lab with Matt Winstead and Tarun Agarwal

E

Special thanks to Matt Winstead the Vice President of Oral Arts Dental Lab out of Huntsville, AL for driving up to Nashville to do a podcast about working with the lab. It was also great because we happen to get a surprise guest from Tbone himself who also happened to be in town. Peyman and Oral Arts have had a great working relationship and all three of us agree that there is more to working with your lab then just sending them a script! When was the last time you visited your lab? When was the last time you called them to discuss a case? As a new dentist the lab can be a great asset for not only making you a better dentist, but also making your life easier! In this episode we discuss all this stuff as well as the future of dentistry in regards to using dental labs. We want to take a moment to thank everyone for listening! Please spread the word and remember to work smarter….not harder!

017 Implants in Black and White with Dr. Danny Dominque

E

After meeting up at the “Voices of Dentistry” in Nashville earlier this year, we knew we had to sit down with Danny Domingue. As far as we were concerned we hit it off and loved what this guy had to say about implants and being a badass young dentist. We were also a couple fireballs deep with the Dentists, Implants, and Worms crew so that might have had something to do with it being so memorable! This interview reminds me more of a fireside chat then an interview! We dive into the pathway to placing implants for a new grad, importance of continuing education, the future of implant dentistry, and a bunch of other random interesting stuff. As the youngest diplomat ever for the American Board of Oral Implantoligists, Peyman and I were just trying to extract info! Danny is currently the President of the membership committee for the AAID, owner of a practice in Lousiana, and does a good bit of teaching on the side. You can see more about his bio on his website. He has a two day course coming up November 10th and 11th that I am planning on going to so check it out! Also follow him on instagram at @implantdiplomate and join the facebook group Implants in Black and White.

016 What You Weren’t Taught in Dental School with Dr. Jason Campbell

E

A couple months back Peyray I bumped into Dr. Jason Campbell at the Voices of Dentistry Summit. In a quick five minute conversation I knew we had to get him on the podcast. Dr. Campbell has created an entire institute called the Advanced Prosthetics Institute in Prescott, Arizona to teach dentists on the importance of taking a biofunctional approach to dentistry. Holsinger, Peyray, and myself sat down with Dr. Campbell for about an hour to hear his journey from associate to owning a niche practice that deals with complex patients and care. In addition we talk about the role his teaching plays in what he does and the courses he offers at API. This episode is worth a listen. I can honestly say I won’t look at teeth the same way after our conversation and his course on biofunction has jumped to the top of our list! We even got a special discount for our listeners. Sign up for one course with the code millennialdds2017 to get $150 off either course. Or 10% off if you sign up for both courses with the code API10for2. As always we thank you for your support and hope you will keep spreading the word!

015 Two Millennials That are Changing the Game!

E

If there is one thing I love about this episode it’s that it gets to the core of why we started it. Drs. Galen and Davina Detrik decided that they didn’t want to practice dentistry the way its always been done. They didn’t want to grind away, miss out on life, work for 30 years and look back and wonder what happened! So instead they made some crazy life decisions and haven’t looked back. Husband, wife, business partners, both doctors are changing the landscape. In 2014 they quit their associateships and started an Air BnB style dental practice. Focusing in on high-end cases making dentistry more of an experience then a clinic. Their business name probably sums it up, “Thrive Bioesthtics” where they actually practice dentistry and their course “Thrive Experience Masterclass” where Thrive stands for Time, Happiness, Relevance, Income, Variety, and Expereince. The six qualities that Dr. Galen says are really what we all want for a fulfilled life! Check out this episode, their website, and their course! I hope that this episode will be an inspiration to many new graduates who want to follow their dream to make it a reality! Make sure to spread the word and follow us on facebook! 014 Implant Compare…Changing Education in Dentistry

E

Peyman and I had an awesome time interviewing founder of Implant compare Blake McClellan on his journey over the past year and the great resource that Implant compare is. Implant Compare now available on itunes, google play, and online is a completely free resource to dentists. Implant Compare started off as an instagram account to allow dentists to share cases and stories in regards to implant dentistry and everything around it. Focusing on live streaming surgeries they have grown to over 27,000 followers in just over one year. We talked all about implant compare and how social media is impacting our practices today. Needless to say Blake knows a thing about that as they now have listeners and followers in over 84 countries! Take a listen and make sure to follow them on instagram @implantcompare and check out there website at implantcompare.com Remember to follow us on facebook, twitter, and instagram and leave us a review on itunes!

013 SuperMartha: Mother, Professor, Researcher, and Pediatric Dentist

E

In this episode Holsinger and I take a trip down memory lane! We actually went back to Dental School to promote the podcast to the students and while we were there we got a chance to catch up with Holsinger’s Pediatric residency director, Dr. Martha Wells. Dr. Wells graduated from Pedo residency from the Ohio State University. There she met her husband(an endodontist). After a stint in private practice she became the clinical director of University of Tennessee Health Science Centers’ Pediatric Residency program where she taught our very own Dr. Dan! She has been published over dozens of times and is about the become one of the main editors for “Pediatric Dentistry: Infancy through Adolescence” . In this episode, we talk about what its like teaching Millennials and the new strategies she has to take. She sheds light on how she balances being a mother of 3 while working part time. We also get to hear more about her personal mission of teaching others so that her work and knowledge can be multiplied. If you interested at all in academia or research this is an episode you won’t want to miss!

012 Dr. Michael Scherer on Digital Dentistry, 3D Printing, and the Future of Dental Education

E

If there is a bright beacon of hope in Dental education it has to be Dr. Michael Scherer! Not only is he on faculty at Loma Linda and UNLV dental schools but he also has a whole online curriculum at his website! Dr. Scherer is an implant-trained prosthodontics that specializes in digital technology. He utilizes 3D printing, CBCT, and cost effective options to treat his patients and provide top of the line care. In this episode we talk a lot about what he sees being brought to the table by Millennials in dentistry. Talking about the future of dental education in regards to technology and the new ways of learning. He is a big advocate for the pre doc student that is motivated to do something to be able to do it. He actually had one student last year place 20 implants in his pre doc clinical year. In addition, we talk about what he is doing with his online curriculum in 3D technology from cone beams to 3D printing as well as his in person course. Youtube channels: Learn Locator He has so generously offered a discount to his courses. The first 100 people to sign up for his online course with the coupon code “MillennialDentist” will receive $50 dollars off. About the courses: -In-person California courses (www.michaelschererdmd.com/dental3d): The in-person courses are perfect for doctors and assistants who want the personal touch and interaction of being able to get a quick 1 day program to get up to speed. -Online course (www.learndental3d.com): this is a comprehensive online based education regarding the entire digital workflow and covers even more than the online course. It covers over 16 hours of interactive video, downloadable examples and workshops lessons and CE credits provided by UNLV School of Dental Medicine. It’s been hugely successful as it never expires, you are welcome to reference the information at anytime after purchasing the course. Additionally, I will continue to add video to the course as time goes on.

011 Having a Financial Plan with Dr. Ernie Johnson

E

Had an awesome opportunity a couple weeks ago to sit down with Dr. Ernie Johnson in Scottsdale, AZ. We were both on the Spear/Cerec doctors campus at the Scottsdale training center. Everyone should make an effort to take a course out there. The campus is amazing! Dr. Johnson is a mentor for cerec doctors and I was at a training course. After a long days work we both sat down over a cold beer to discussthe importance of having a financial plan as we go throughout our career. Dr. Johnson has a clear passion for personal finance and specifically investing. I think we could have talked all day about everything. He has gone so far to actually create a website that he specifically markets to dentists to help them get a leg up on investing. At Dentist Market Alert, he provides evidence based reasoning on how timing being in the market, out of the market, or on alert. It’s simple, but can make a huge difference in investment returns if your able to avoid drops like the dreaded 08 crash. Take a listen, check out his website, and feel free to contact him with questions. Currently he charges only $200 a year to be apart of his online community.

010 Sully and PeyRay Travel to the Hinman Dental Meeting, Part 2

E

Hopefully you all enjoyed Part 1 of our Hinman journey! I think it gives a snapshot into a lot of these companies if you weren’t able to be there and may convice you that next year you should go to it or another big meeting like it. Part 2 kicks off Hank Barton, the president of Forest Dental. I was showing Peyman their dental units because he is still looking for a couple and we found them super affordable when we remodeled our office last year. This old guy in jeans walks up to us and introduces himself! I was like wow, that’s really cool! So a couple minutes later we sat down and got a chance to hear about his journey working with ADEC for 25 years before buying Forest Dental. When you look at there website you will totally get that his other passion is hot rod cars because it comes out in the chairs…they are really sharp! What we really wanted with this part was to dentists to make sure they look at all options when they are remodeling an office or opening one up. As Hank will talk about, check out their 7000 series at ForestDental.com Next up is Alex Nudel, the founder of Revenue Well. It’s hard to even describe what revenue well does in a paragraph! Basically it is like having an additional front office team member. The system can read codes so it knows every patient that you have diagnosed a crown on that didn’t schedule. It then allows you to send emails to all those patients talking about importance of crowns. You can do this with everything so its pretty neat. They also help with reviews, social media, confirmations and everything in between it feels like. For $299 a month it will be hard to find something that all encompassing! Finally, we wrapped up our Hinman podcast tour with Dr. Charles Blair. A retired dentist, he now spends his entire time helping dentists deal with dental coding. This is something we all get no experience with in school and immediately have to learn on the fly when it comes to dealing with insurance! His books are not that expensive and are a must have for any new graduate in a practice. We don’t push a lot of product here but its that worth it. Little teaser for an upcoming episode is Dr. Blair is currently doing a in detailed look at our office over the past year. We are going to record the entire thing and post it as an episode so you can see where we have been messing up and losing money! Practicebooster.com Remember everyone, work smarter…not harder!

009 Sully and PeyRay travel to the Hinman Dental Meeting, Part 1

E

After doing lots of recording from the ole homestead here in Nashville Peyman and I decided to head south to ATL for the Hinman Dental Meeting. We actually did a neat video for Hinman on why Peyman and I are passionate about going to these large dental meetings! We love digital learning like the rest of you, but it doesn’t replace these meetings! Check it out first so you see what these episodes are all about. So yeah, at Hinman we went around to different vendors that we thought were interesting and got them on the podcast. We wanted those who couldn’t attend to hear about some of the new companies out there as well as their take on different aspects of dentistry. First up we have Dentist Chats who were great to talk to. I am currently using a different chat company, but these guys were awesome. I am a big believer only a month or two in that a chat person on your website is a must! They are doing a special deal for our listeners in waiving the first month fee if you mention us!! Secondly, we interviewed Weave. Weave is basically a company that replaces your phones and integrates with your practice management software to maximize your front desk team. I am personally a user and a big fan. We saved a good bit of money by dropping AT&T. The biggest complaint your going to hear about Weave is if internet is down, so is your phones. Having good internet is key and Ill say for us personally that the amount of good things about weave outweighs the minimal outages we have had over the past year. However, everyone should look into some sort of software that helps your team up front! Skye said mention us and get your first month free and no contract! Thirdly, we got a chance to catch up with Rohit, the founder of Practice By Numbers. I am a big believer in the fact that all practices need some software that helps track numbers. If your not tracking it you can’t improve it, its that simple! I am currently a Dental Intel user, but both would be worth looking into. Rohit is offering your first month free here as well! Our last interview was with Banyan, a social media/review company. Everybody is starting to see those new signs pop up at dental offices. They are using a company like this to help market on social media. Although I love the idea and their concept I think its a bit overpriced as you will see. Unfortunately, we havent heard from them so you will get a good laugh at the end! Thanks for listening and please share with your friends and give us a review on iTunes!!

Super excited to have the chance to interview one of dentistry’s most influential people in the area of sleep dentistry! However, we took a turn from most interviews Dr. Elliott has done and focused on her life as a dentist, who happens to be a female, her transition from associate to partner, how to avoid being a “princess” associate, and what her plans are for the future of her own practice! Dr. Elliott was born in Southern California and was apparently quite the athlete! She played soccer in college before heading to Creighton University for Dental School. She has a passion for treating sleep apnea and is the past president of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy. You can reach Erin at [email protected].

007 Total Millennial with a Heart of an Old Soul

E

It was a privilege to get to spend some time with Peyman’s good buddy Dr. Matt Koepke. Dr. Koepke is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in West Virgina. You will find that in listening to the interview with Dr. Koepke that at first he may seem like your typical millennial that graduates dental school with lots of loans and then tries to figure out what to do next…guess again! He just got back a couple months ago from a trip of a lifetime taking him around the world! Capping it off with spending 2 months in Australia where he planned his start up Oral Surgery office, Appalachian Oral Surgery Center. In this one of kind episode we see what confidence, drive, and determination can really do. Dr. Koepke has not only defied expectations but also the norm! He has taken an out of the box approach to putting emphasis on happiness, helping others, and providing top notch patient care. Best part about the podcast is he is completely open and honest about his debt load, his experience with a start up, and how he got to where he is. And just when I thought I had finally figured this guy out he lets us inside another passion of his, medical ethics. Dr. Koepke made some great points on how us as dentists and other medical professionals have fallen off the wagon in giving and maintaining the best possible ethical care for our patients. In his brand new book, “Ethics under the Knife: Patient Care and Disservice in the Medical Industry” he tackles these questions head on. To hear more about Dr. Koepke check out his instagram @drmattkoepke and follow his youtube channel! As always spread the word and head on over to iTunes and give us a review! And remember….Work Smarter, Not Harder!

006 The Unicorn Partnership, a Baby Boomer and a Millennial

E

First time we have had one of these “Senior Dentists” on the episode and I felt like it should be none other than my dad. Probably one of our favorite episodes we have recorded so far because it really gets at the core of why we started this podcast. In the episode, Dr. Rick Sullivan, a 3rd generation dentist shares his experience over the past 30 years in practice, transitioning to a partnership, and working with a Millennial. Here how are practice has grown over 150% in two years, the keys to our success, and why he is loving dentistry more and more. Dr. Pey Ray takes the lead in interviewing Dr. Rick on why as a seasoned dentist in his mid 50s he has continued to invest in technology. Great questions ranging from why he loves dentistry to the secret to keeping long-term staff. If your interested in dentistry or gun collecting follow him on instagram @tngunmaster and if you have more questions you would like to personally ask him his email is [email protected]! 005 Dentist Metrics takes being a practice CPA to a whole new level

E

Check out this interview I just had with Jonathon Van Horn. He is a Dental specific CPA who I feel like really does provide his clients enormous benefit. If I were in the market CPA he would for sure be on my short list. Give him a shout and tell him you heard him on the podcast. Special thanks to him for taking time out of his super busy season to join us. Below is from his website www.dentistmetrics.com and his email is [email protected]. Jonathan created DentistMetrics to solve the problem facing many dentists – they have a complicated business and their time is stretched way too thin. Most dentists spend 15,000 hours learning to be a dentist but ZERO hours learning how to be a business owner. DentistMetrics aims to completely automate and outsource the bookkeeping, financial reporting, and tax portion of the dentist’s business so that they can focus on what really matters in their practice. By creating an automated workflow for the dentist and by focusing on showing dentists what numbers they need to be watching, DentistMetrics has allowed dental practices around the country to raise profits by hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. When not interviewing dentists on his podcast Start Your Dental Practice, coaching dentists on being a better business owner, or just nerding it up with business owners about ways to be more profitable Jonathan enjoys spending time going to the lake with his wife April, daughter Harper, and son Finn. He’s also been known to play golf. (poorly) Weird facts about Jonathan – he was once ranked in the top ten in the nation at whiffleball, played bass guitar in a rock band for eight years, and spent his college years playing semi-professional poker.

004 Learning to live with Student Loan Debt

E

In this episode Dr. Peyray, the Holeshot, and myself divulge the current state of our loan affairs. When you graduate its super easy to get bogged down with student loans. I think it can be one of the biggest hindrances to people’s early success. There is such a balance of living with the debt and having a strategy to pay it off. We look at the different government options such as IBR, REPAYE, and others. We talk about refinancing and some of the programs that do this like SoFi and DRB. However, we spend most of the time talking about whether it’s a smart idea to aggressively pay your loans down or not. The most discussed resource in this episode is something we mention very often. Best thing you can do is check out the White Coat Investor! At the end of the day we want to encourage our listeners to think about retirement vs. paying loans down early. Make sure you educate yourself on all the options. If you are one of those people who just wants to pay your loans down as soon as possible then make sure you have a plan on how your going to save after and be able to give a good reason why this is your strategy! As always thanks for listening, subscribe, share with your friends, and follow us on instagram @millennialdentist!

003 What’s an HSA and why you need one!

E

This is our first non dental topic that we have had on the podcast! In fact, if you have a “High Deductible Health Plan” then no matter what you do, this episode is for you! One of the best tax advantaged accounts people can have is a a Health Savings Account or HSA, and if you have a high deductible health plan then you and your family are eligible to open up an HSA. The beauty, as we will discuss, is that the money goes in tax free, grows tax free, and if used on medical expenses comes out tax free! Thats triple tax free folks! Of the various non dental topics to consider this was the first one I wanted to tackle because for me personally its had some relevance of late. In the episode, I discuss my wife’s recent knee surgery and what it looked like for us to have a high deductible plan and the choices we had having opened up an HSA last year. Even if your a seasoned veteran on how an HSA works I think there are some little caveats you will take away that make it worth the listen. As we discuss in the episode one of the biggest resources for me has been the White Coat Investor. If I can recommend one site to get non biased personal finance advice this would be it! Dr. Dahle has multiple articles written about HSAs and I would urge you to take a look at his site. Remember, that as of February 2017 the contribution limits to an HSA are $6,750 for families and $3400 for singles. Also I wanted to give a shout out to Dr. Ryan Cregger aka: Daniel’s boss, for jumping on a call and being open about his status on using an HSA. The hope is that this episode gets all of you from talking about it to actually putting money into it! Thanks for listening and remember to check us out at www.millennialdentist.com and follow us on Instagram @millennialdentist!

002 Dr. PeyRay’s journey to placing 1,000 implants two years out of dental school!

E

In episode 2 we get to hear Dr. Peyman Raissi’s story! @Drpeyray on instagram and his website is www.mynewsmiledental.com. If you're a D4 in dental school and its the spring semester and you don’t know what your going to do…don’t fret, listen to this episode! Dr. Raissi had no clue what he was going to do until he went with a family member to an Affordable Dentures and Implants clinic. Three days later he had a job. Some hundreds of hours of CE later and lots of hard work had Peyman on his way to placing over 1,000 implants in his first two years out of school! Myself included often gave corporate dentistry a bad rap. However, its great to hear such a success story and I personally have a new outlook on them. If your considering a corporate office you need to hear how it really molded Dr. Raissi and catapulted him into early dental success. Now two years out of school Dr. Raissi has opened up a niche general dentist office focused on implants and a complex restorative approach to full mouth rehabilitation. Sit back and relax and hear what Dr. Raissi has to say about hanging his shingle! Follow us @millennialdentist on instagram and check out our website at www.millennialdentist.com

001 Who are we and what the heck are we doing?

E

Welcome everyone to the Millennial Dentist Podcast inaugural episode! My name is Dr. Sully Sullivan and I am a general dentist in Brentwood, Tn. Myself and two of my good buddies Dr. Daniel Holsinger and Dr. Peyman Raissi have started this podcast to help our generation climb the ladder to dental success as quick as possible! Ultimately the three of us are having so much fun practicing that we want to share what we are doing to be successful. We are going to be talking about everything from graduating dental school, planning for retirement, using technology in your practice, how we started placing implants, to how to travel around the world for free. We hope this podcast can be a little beacon of entertainment in your crazy day to day life where you can sit back, have a cold one, and maybe learn a tip or two for your practice! In this first episode your going to hear more about this idea in detail, how Dr. Holsinger became a pediatric dentist, and a little about my story. We would love to hear your thoughts on the podcast such as things you like or dont like. We figure the more conversational this can be with our listeners the more fun it will be for all of us! Check us out at www.millennialldentist.com, instagram at @millennialdentist, and on twitter @millennialldds! -Dr. Sully
