89: What to do After You Play Terrible
We all have bad rounds. It's inevitable. It's just the law of the variance in golf. It will happen. 88: Good Players Don’t Say Probably
Are you the kind of player that says "I hope I hit it there" and you inevitably don't hit it where you want? Or do you say "I hope that I accomplish this big goal this year" and you wake up unmotivated and you lose your way all too quickly? I think there's a deeper reason for that. Listen to this episode of The Mental Golf Show to hear Josh's thoughts on how to combat that! ----- Thanks for listening! Have a question about the mental game? 87: The Mentality to Handle Anything in Golf w/ UNCW Coach Jonathan Bowden

These might sound like some pretty different goals, but the same principles apply to reaching all of them! And in this great interview with UNC Wilmington Coach Jonathan Bowden, we discuss the many different ways that you can improve, and the mentality that serves as foundation for that improvement. 81: Control
How many of us try to control things we cannot control? Things that are not truly our responsibility? The more I talk about and discuss with players about the mental game, this is becoming one of the most important mental game topics that makes the most difference for the most people. ----- FYI this was recorded at 8:48pm on 12/10 but it wouldn't upload until the following morning. 80: The Temptation to Tamper with Technique
How many of us spend our playing time trying to swing a certain way? Trying to perform that perfect motion. Only to get to a frustrated point and give up trying to be perfect and finally just play, and actually start playing the way we wanted to all along? No? Just me? 76: One Good Way to Accept Bad Shots
Hey everybody! Josh here! Ever struggle moving on from bad shots and putts? I have a pretty strong hunch your answer is yes. Tried ways to talk yourself into moving on and forgetting about that bad shot but it didn't work? Pretty strong possibility that answer is yes too. Try this tangible, physical way to accept shots and move on. Because the only way to hit the next shot with full commitment and trust (which is your only job after all) is to fully accept the previous shot and move on. ----- Let me know what you think! 74: What You Can Learn from Tiger and Dustin at the 2020 Masters
At first glance, Tiger and Dustin Johnson are very different people. Personality-wise who could be more different? But they share one super important trait that you can do and can directly help you play better. Listen to hear what it is! ----- Thanks for listening! 73: Bad Shots are Inevitable. So Why Aren’t You Ready for Them?
When was the last time you played a round of golf without a bogey? It's not exactly common. How about something even more rare - playing a round without a bad shot/swing/chip/putt? It doesn't happen. Ben Hogan famously said even in his best rounds he only hit 1 or 2 perfect shots. So it's essential that you prepare mentally for bad shots, holes, scores, and tournaments. Listen for a way to do it. ----- Thanks for listening! Share with someone who needs to work on their mental game! If you'd like to reach me, send me an email at [email protected]. 72: Your Game Doesn’t Change Overnight
2 day streak! Still going... for now. The topic of this episode was inspired by working with one of my players who felt they were a totally different golfer from one day to the next. But he (and all of us) need to realize an important truth about our game. Listen to hear it! *****Bonus points to the first person to send me the name of my cat which is revealed after she so rudely (but also cutely) interrupted me***** ----- Thanks for listening! 71: How to Take Control of Your Own Improvement
Yes I'm going to do this to myself. I'm going to commit to doing a daily podcast. Even if it's just something small and unedited. I want to consistently give you guys something to think about that's been on my mind, or that I've learned, or that I've discussed with one of my own mental coaching players, or just random thoughts. I already know I'm not going to pull off a daily show, so I'm going to pre-accept that failure (foreshadowing to a future episode 😉). But I'm going to put this routine in place, and attempt to take intentional control of my journey. Speaking of taking intentional control of my journey, this episode is all about putting in a consistent process to help you always be moving forward towards improvement, and being able to catch yourself in the middle of sliding backwards. No plateaus allowed! ----- If you'd like to contact me, my email is [email protected] Or if you'd like more, head to foundationsmp.com or follow me on social: Twitter: @joshlukenichols Instagram: @joshlukenichols

69: How a Regular Person Can Become a Scratch Golfer w/ Sean Denning of parmachine.com
Sean Denning is just a "regular guy". He works a regular job. Has a regular family. Has regular time constraints. Yet he improved his handicap from around a 4, into a scratch in just over a year. Now at first glance that might not sound like a lot and it might sound like a long time. But look at your improvement during your own life. Has it been dramatic? Has it been fast? If you're like me, then most likely not. Improvement is slow in golf, and making big strides is really difficult. And the better you are the harder it gets to improve even further. But what I like about this conversation and Sean's story is that he did it with an hour here and an hour there. He didn't have a tour player schedule. But HOW he spent his time is what made the difference. If you don't have quantity, then extreme quality will have to do. Hope you enjoyed this episode, because I know I did. 68: How Managing Expectations Makes You a Better Golfer and a Happier Person w/ Jon Sherman of Practical Golf

66: The Best Definition of Process I’ve Ever Heard w/ Kellen Lee, CMPC
You've heard the phrase "Stick to the process" or "focus on the process" or "the process is more important than the result" right? Probably more than you'd like. But what does it mean? This conversation with Kellen Lee, one of the mental coaches for the San Francisco Giants baseball organization, dives deep into that very topic, and how having a clear process can actually help you play better. 65: How to Get Over Scoring Plateaus w/ Adam Young Golf
You've been shooting the same scores for a while now. You just can't seem to break through and go lower than normal. When you're on a plateau, how do you overcome it? That's just one of the topics Adam Young and I discuss on this episode. Adam Young is the author of the best-selling golf book of The Practice Manual. 64: Where to Find Your Golf Motivation w/ Scott Barnicle, PhD, CMPC
Do you focus on result throughout most of every round? Do you get disappointed when you don't play perfect? Where do you get your source of satisfaction and enjoyment in golf? Do you get it from external sources like shot, or score, or tournament finish? On this episode Josh has a conversation Scott Barnicle, a professor at West Virginia University with a PhD in Sport and Exercise Psychology and is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant. He has coached college golf, works with athletes in many different sports, and has some great insights on what it takes to be a mentally strong golfer. Hope you enjoy! Let me know what you thought. 63: Why the Mental Game is Vital w/ Dr. Lindsey Blom
How much of golf would you say is mental and how much is physical? 50/50? 60/40? 20/80? Regardless you will scarcely find someone that thinks it's all physical and no mental. So then does your practice time reflect those percentages? If you think any part of golf is mental then you should incorporate at least some mental training into your regimen, and Dr. Lindsey Blom makes a great case for that in this episode. ----- Want to try some actual mental training? 53: There’s No One Way to Think
A lot of us think that we have to do things just like to the pros in order to play like the pros. But I think that's a misconception that we should challenge ourselves on. What we do can weigh us down. So here's a challenge to change that way of thinking. Thanks for listening! If you enjoyed it leave a rating! For more, head to joshnicholsgolf.com.

51: Dealing with Change
How do you deal with change? Is your house built on sand or on a solid foundation of rock? In order to deal with tough circumstances you must build from the ground up. Thanks for listening! For more head to joshnicholsgolf.com.
50: Visualization Practice
A lot of us are looking for things we can be doing during our downtime, between tournaments, or just a good daily habit to exercise your mind. This visualization practice is a good way to fill those gaps! The first half of this episode describes the why, what, and how of visualization/meditation. And the second half is a recording of a visualization practice that I do for myself. But just because it's for me doesn't mean you can't use it. It's generic enough to apply to you, while specific enough to simulate the feelings that you should have before, during, and after a competitive round of golf. Hope this helps! For more, head to joshnicholsgolf.com.
49: When Things Feel Out of Control
There’s a strong tendency to focus on the things you can’t control, especially when circumstances are not how you’d like them to be. But when external forces seem to be out of control, what you choose to focus on can determine your performance. Thanks for listening! For more, head to joshnicholsgolf.com.
48: Wrong but Committed
We wonder what it’s like to get in the zone. Or we want to figure out how to get out of our own way. Well you can’t simply will yourself into the zone, or repeat the words "get out of your own way" over and over and expect yourself to magically arrive there. It's a practice. A habit. And one that you can start right now, whether you're at home or at the course. Link to How Champions Think by Dr. Bob Rotella Thanks for listening! For more, head to joshnicholsgolf.com.
47: Update Pod - Coronavirus Edition
Finally getting back in the saddle for an update on how things have been. There was a point in this coronavirus pandemic that I would've hesitated to permanently etch the subject in the shownotes of a podcast, but now I believe this situation is large enough to warrant the small act of including it here. With multiple tournaments being cancelled, the Masters being postponed, and entire college seasons being brought to a hault, I think this is justified. Anyway, listen up for some thoughts I've had lately 😅 Thanks for listening! For more head to joshnicholsgolf.com.
46: Playing it Safe
The difference having a better strategy on the course can have on your long-term scores is massive. Make that decision now and look back in a decade and realize how smart of a mental switch it was. 45: Special Guest Vanderbilt Head Coach Scott Limbaugh
Back with another awesome conversation with a high level college coach! Well, I don't know if the conversation is awesome. At least Coach Limbaugh's half of the conversation is awesome. Why do awesome coach's keep agreeing to stoop to my level? Might never know. But listen up here because Coach Limbaugh is a down to earth, self proclaimed (and geographical) southerner, and really great, quotable, fun guy to talk to and learn from. 44: My Goals for My Game in 2020
We all need to set goals, and if I as a mental coach cannot set goals and hold myself accountable to those goals, then I'm really being disingenuous. So I have set goals for myself and my own golf game for this year. I hope you can learn and be able to set some realistic and some stretch goals for yourself this year as well. Thanks for listening!
