Golf Thought Thursday: How to Make it to the Finals of a USGA Championship
On this episode we’re going to be talking about the US Mid-Amateur. On the day this is released the first day of practice rounds are happening right now at the US Mid-Am at Sleepy Hollow. No, I’m not there. And yes, I’m extremely jealous. But I want to take this episode to talk about the mentality that it takes to get good enough to play in a US Mid-Am, and make it all the way to the finals. Now I know what you might be saying, “this episode isn’t for me, there’s no way I could ever get that good or I don’t like setting goals like that or I don’t have that kind of time.” I think this episode is more than just about achieving this one specific goal. It’s more about becoming the type of player that you aspire to be, no matter what that level is. Mine might be different than yours, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get better and improve toward your goals. As some of you have heard me talk about, I made it to the finals of the 2017 US Mid-Am. That’s getting farther and farther into the past, but the process I used to get there has solidified over time. And if you’re actually currently playing in the US Mid-Am, maybe this can help you pace out your days and hopefully your long road to the final. And you have to promise me if you make it to the final like I did you gotta give The Mental Golf Show a shout out. ----- Are you a competitive golfer? Take a Hard Look at Your Mental Habits w/ Raymond Prior (Re-release part 2)
On this episode we’ve got part 2 of our re-release of my all-time favorite episode of the podcast. It’s from the very first conversation I had with Raymond Prior titled Golf Beneath the Surface released back in February of 2022. Again, this conversation was formative for me because it completely shifted my focus from the surface level mental game that we read about and hear on social media to deeper level psychology that actually gets at the heart of the issue. And it’s the way I believe we should all be addressing our own improvement. Rather than jumping from one quick fix to the next, instead taking the time to address what’s at the heart of our struggles. As Prior says, patiently and systematically working on something might be a slow road, but it’s still the fasted road to sustainable change. So I hope you learn as much as I did in talking to Raymond Prior. I think you can even hear how I’m being challenged on my thinking during this episode. So I encourage you to take some notes and commit these things to belief. ----- Raymond Prior, PhD: Raymond Prior's website: btsmindset.com Amazon book- Golf Beneath the Surface: The New Science of Golf Psychology Raymond Prior, PhD on Twitter: @bts_mindset ----- Are you a competitive golfer? How to Turn Down the Mental Noise on the Course (Re-release)
I wanted to bring back a very popular episode of the podcast about quieting your mind. When things are going sideways on the course, the mental chatter starts to ramp up. And maybe even more difficult, when things are going well on the course the mind gets very noisy. Past, future, good, bad. So being able to handle this properly is an essential skill for playing good golf. ----- Are you a competitive golfer? Interested in working 1-on-1 with Josh as your Golf Psychology Coach? Your Comfort Zone is Irrelevant w/ Raymond Prior (Re-release episode)
We’re going to do something a little different this time. I actually don’t think I’ve ever done this in the 4 and a half year history of The Mental Golf Show. I’m bringing back my all-time favorite episode the podcast. It’s the original Golf Beneath the Surface episode with Raymond Prior from back in February 2022. This episode had a huuuuge effect on me. It set me on a path toward a much more research- and scientifically-based approach to the mental game, or as I’ve come to start rightfully terming it, golf psychology. It had a direct impact on the way I read and research, coach my players, how I run this podcast, and even tweet. Underneath all of the symptomatic things that we try to address is our inner experience. Our psychology. If you’re only addressing the end results, you’ll constantly be spinning your wheels. So Raymond Prior’s approach to how he works with his players in a bottom up way has changed me in profound ways. And I hope I do him justice in the way that I talk about the psychological side of the game. You’ll hear us talking about his upcoming book Golf Beneath the Surface which he released a year after this conversation. It’s by far the best golf book I’ve ever read. So if you haven’t read that yet then you need to right now. Accept Your Game As It Is w/ Jon Sherman (Part 1)
On today’s episode we have Jon Sherman who you most likely know as @practicalgolf on twitter (X) and the writer of The Four Foundations of Golf. I had Jon on the podcast back in October of 2020. It was a great conversation but he’s done some great things since then that I’ll let him tell you about. He’s always been one of the best voices in the industry for how he helps the regular golfer play better and enjoy the game more in a very, um, practical way. We recorded this back in June so we start off with some talk about the US Open, then we talk about our feelings for Rory and how his strategy might need to change in order to win a major, the loneliness of playing pro golf, Jon Sherman’s book Four Foundations of Golf and how he’s trying to overdeliver on value for the reader, his philosophy on golf, how to manage expectations, acceptance of any outcome and more. ----- Jon Sherman on Twitter (X) - @practicalgolf Jon Sherman's website - practical-golf.com Jon Sherman's book on Amazon - The Four Foundations of Golf ----- Are you a competitive golfer? How to Pre-Round Warmup Like a Pro w/ Will Knauth (Part 3)
On today’s episode we have part 3, our final installment, with Will Knauth. If you need an intro to Will I encourage you to go back and listen to part 1. In this episode we dive deep into Will’s pre-tournament routine for the Byron Nelson PGA Tour event, why he putts with a line but doesn’t use a line when he’s practicing, what he did to accidentally work himself into the yips, his pre-round playlist called 45 minute golf warmup #1, why chunking your first few shots on the range can actually help, the actual purpose of a pre-round warmup, and then we get super deep and existential. ----- Are you a competitive golfer? Golf Thought Thursday: How to Dig Out of a Slump
On today’s episode we are talking about slumps. Players like Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth come to mind. Heck even Tiger comes to mind. And maybe since you're listening to this you come to this episode trying to get out of your own slump. I know I’ve gone through half-decade long slumps. Welcome to the PGA Tour w/ Will Knauth (Part 2)
On today’s episode we have Part 2 with Will Knauth. If you need an intro to Will I encourage you to go back and listen to part 1. In this episode we dive into the details of when he played in the Byron Nelson PGA Tour event earlier this summer. I think it’s fascinating to hear from a really good amateur player and what the experience was like for him to play in a PGA Tour event, how difficult they set up the course, and fine of a line it is between great golf and pretty bad golf. We also talk about how he used his limited practice time, how he calibrates his swing and putting setup to always have a good idea what they’re going to do, and how he thinks about pressure and how much pressure affects his game. ----- Are you a competitive golfer? Micro Details Make for Macro Improvement w/ Will Knauth (Part 1)
On today’s episode we have part 1 of my conversation with Will Knauth. If you hang out on golf twitter like I do way too much, you’ll know him as @freewilllyyyy. He’s a PhD student who is specializing in statistics. What got him on my radar was that he played in the Byron Nelson PGA Tour event and knows a lot about golf and his curiosity about the game and how he thinks about improvement and building skill. He’s a great player who’s played in a PGA Tour Event and is very thoughtful about golf so that’s basically the trifecta of someone I want to talk to for this podcast. And I believe the way he thinks and discusses things in these conversations can directly help you play better golf through improving your mind. ----- Will Knauth on twitter: @freewilllyyyy ----- Are you a competitive golfer? On today’s episode we have part 1 of 2 with Mike Carroll. You probably know him as Fit for Golf. Why Your Practice Isn’t Working w/ Will Shaw, PhD (Part 1)
On today’s episode we have Will Shaw. He’s the founder of the popular golf website Golf Insider UK which heavily covers better ways to practice. He’s a PGA Pro who works with players on their swings and their physical training. He teaches as Leeds Beckett University on sport biomechanics and skill acquisition, which means he specializes in the most optimal ways to practice. He has his masters in in exercise science, and his PhD in biomedical science. He knows a ton about practice and that makes up the bulk of what we talk about. So if you’re looking for ways to get the most out of your time at the course, this episode definitely covers that. We also of course get into the link between practice and the mental game. How to Get Rid of the Yips
On today’s episode we’re talking about the yips. How do yips start, why do they continue, and how to systematically get rid of them. You’re going to hear me use the word yips a lot in this episode, which might at first make you feel uncomfortable. But I believe naming it, talking about it openly, and facing your fears can destigmatize it in your own mind. So hang there and lean into it. And this isn’t just about the yips. This applies to anytime your fear of an outcome takes over and causes you to hit bad shots. Which is a much broader issue that we all face, even if you don’t struggle with the yips specifically. Fix the Dents in Your Confidence w/ Henry Shimp
On today’s episode we have Henry Shimp. He recently graduated from playing at Stanford. His scoring average was 72.45 across 120 rounds, he was PAC 12 scholar athlete of the year in 2022. He was part of Stanfords NCAA team victory in 2019. And he now runs a golf podcast called The Tie. It’s a fascinating podcast where he and his co host Walker Simas talk with a wide variety of people about their tie to golf. This episode is a little different. We take our time getting to the nitty gritty of golf psychology but I think this is a very interesting conversation about Henry as a person and golfer and how his relationship with the game has changed throughout the years. But we get into some really good stuff with Henry’s battle with his chipping and how mental it’s become so hang in there for that. ----- Henry Shimp: The Tie Podcast Henry Shimp on Twitter ----- Take the Mental Game Assessment and learn your top mental game traits and your areas in most need of improvement. ----- Click here to sign up for The Mental Re-Grip ⛳️ newsletter to receive golf psychology help in your email inbox every-ish Tuesday. ----- Have a suggestion for a topic or guest? The Purpose of Meditation for Golf
On this episode, we talk about meditation. What is it? How to do it? Why should I do it? How will it help my golf game? And if you’re interested in nerding out with me and want to read more about the benefits of meditation/mindfulness practice, here’s the best research paper I’ve personally read about it: Meditation experience is associated with difference in default mode network activity and connectivity https://www.researchgate.net/publication/51825876_Meditation_Experience_Is_Associated_with_Differences_in_Default_Mode_Network_Activity_and_Connectivity And here’s an excerpt from Raymond Prior’s book on just a “few” of the benefits mindfulness practice can have on you as a person: “A massive body of research shows people who practice mindfulness tend to be happier, more optimistic, more hopeful, and more fulfilled with their chosen crafts. They are more satisfied with their lives and grateful for what they have. They are less anxious, stressed, fearful, and depressed. They are less likely to repeatedly fall into unproductive habit loops and lose control in stressful environments. They are more emotionally intelligent and emotionally agile, allowing them to respond to negative emotions more effectively. They are more likely to engage in behaviors that lead to better health and higher performance related to physical fitness, nutrition, and sleep. They are physically healthier, have stronger immune systems, and even get fewer colds. They are more motivated to pursue passions and interests. They are more conscientious and openminded, leading to faster and better learning. They’re more resilient when faced with challenges and show more grit when pursuing endeavors that are important to them. They are more forgiving, empathic, and are better able to see other’s perspectives. They have closer and more functional relationships with friends, family, and romantic partners. “Oh, and people who practice mindfulness are more composed under pressure and have more stable confidence. “In the coming years, mindfulness practices will be as common, and required, for sport and performance as strength and conditioning training because the positive impacts are measurable and undeniable; those who don’t understand and don’t practice mindfulness will be left lagging behind.” Dr. Raymond Prior. Dispelling Common Golf Psychology Myths w/ Raymond Prior - Part 2
Welcome to part 2 of 2 where Raymond Prior, PhD and I work through another set of common golf psychology myths. If you haven't listened to part 1, I highly recommend it. In part 1 we talked about myths and cliches like “just be positive”, why distracting yourself is unhelpful, how you can’t just will the ball into the hole or make yourself focus, and it’s impossible to just forget a bad shot. We also had a little bonus at the end talking about block vs random practice and how much you should be challenging yourself in practice. In part 2 we talk about what's deceiving about the common wisdom surrounding nerves and anxiety, perception vs. reality, muscle memory, pre-shot routines, alcohol helping your anxiety, sleep being optional, and we take a deep dive on the yips that you're not going to want to miss. ----- Raymond Prior, PhD: Raymond Prior's website: btsmindset.com Amazon book- Golf Beneath the Surface: The New Science of Golf Psychology Raymond Prior, PhD on Twitter: @bts_mindset ----- Episode topics: 00:00 Intro 02:50 Myth # 4 - “Nerves = Anxiety” 14:12 Extra - Yips deep dive 20:35 Myth # 5 - “Perception is Reality” 26:40 Myth # 6 - “Muscle memory” 29:24 Extra - Pre-shot routines - Need em or not? 32:55 Myth # 7 - “Alcohol for 1st tee anxiety” 43:25 Myth # 8 - “I don’t need to sleep” 48:27 Extra - The best thing to do after you get a golf lesson ----- Take the Mental Game Assessment and learn your top mental game traits and your areas in most need of improvement. ----- Click here to sign up for The Mental Re-Grip ⛳️ newsletter to receive golf psychology help in your email inbox every-ish Tuesday. ----- Have a suggestion for a topic or guest? Dispelling Common Golf Psychology Myths w/ Raymond Prior - Part 1
In Dr. Prior’s upcoming book Golf Beneath the Surface (Amazon link to purchase--not an ad), a major theme is how the cliches and catch phrases and mental tips and tricks that we've heard so many times are mostly just myths. They’ve been generally accepted as truths but don't actually have much or any supporting evidence to back them up. So you could look at this episode as a teaser for the book and some of the deeper evidence based psychology that you will learn reading it, but I think equipping yourself with this knowledge will allow you to be more informed in fact checking what you read and hear, as well as how to specifically apply the actual scientifically backed psychology that will help you play better golf. ----- Raymond Prior, PhD: Raymond Prior's website: btsmindset.com Amazon book- Golf Beneath the Surface: The New Science of Golf Psychology Raymond Prior, PhD on Twitter: @bts_mindset ----- Episode topics: 00:00 Intro 02:42 Myth #1 - “Just be Positive” 11:51 Myth #2 - “Distraction techniques” 23:50 Myth #3 - “Willing the ball into the hole” 34:02 Myth #4 - “Just forget about a bad shot” 39:38 Extra - “How much block/technique practice should I be doing?” ----- Take the Mental Game Assessment and learn your top mental game traits and your areas in most need of improvement. ----- Click here to sign up for The Mental Re-Grip ⛳️ newsletter to receive golf psychology help in your email inbox every-ish Tuesday. ----- Have a suggestion for a topic or guest?
