The Last Trip

In 1975, a musician named Jim Sullivan got into his car and left Los Angeles behind. He was heading east, chasing a new beginning - or maybe running from something he couldn’t name.He was tall, handsome, magnetic - and his music carried that same restless energy. Songs about highways, lost souls, and vanishing into the unknown. The kind of lyrics that feel like they’re trying to tell you something… if you’re really listening. Somewhere along that long stretch of desert road, Jim stopped - and from that moment on, no one knows what happened next. His story faded into rumor, mystery, and myth - tangled up in the same strange beauty that filled his songs.Today, we’re going to follow the same road Jim Sullivan took - the one that led him deep into the desert… and out of the world we know.Listen as we dive into New Mexico, the case of Jim Sullivan, and how to stay alive on vacation.Do you have a story to share? May 12, 2004 - a day that began like any other for the Devries family. They were on vacation in Aruba, seeking a moment’s peace, maybe a bit of hope, after a great loss. Fourteen year old Max, eager for an adventure, asked to go out on a jet ski with a man they recently befriended.By afternoon, that simple request would become the portal to a mystery no one has solved. The man returned - alone. Max did not. What’s astonishing is how quickly questions outpaced answers. The man’s story would shift - from jet ski trouble, to a tow gone wrong, to Max slipping away in the waves, to even claiming he was swimming for shore.Yet no one was ever charged. Max was declared “lost at sea”.What really happened to Max Devries on that Aruban ocean. Was it a tragic accident, or something far more sinister? Listen as we dive into Aruba, the case of Max DeVries, and how to stay alive on vacation.Do you have a story to share? It was April 1st, 1981, when Johnny Waterman, a 29 year old brilliant climber and haunted soul, set out from the Mountain House deep in the Ruth Glacier of Denali National Park. His goal was the East Buttress of Denali, approached via the northwest fork of the Ruth - an audacious, almost impossible route in the winter. He carried remarkably little: a sled, snowshoes, not much food, and wands to mark his route. No tent, no sleeping bag. He told a fellow climber he believed he could manage with minimal gear.He was last seen somewhere around 11,000 feet - cutting a straight line through a labyrinth of crevasses and snow chutes. Then…. He vanished.Listen as we dive into Alaska, the case of Johnny Waterman, and how to stay alive on vacation.Do you have a story to share? Rebecca Middleton was just 17 years old - on the trip of a lifetime with her best friend - when a chance encounter shattered everything. What should have been sun-drenched days of beaches and laughter turned into one of the most brutal and baffling murders the island had ever seen. But the horror of Rebecca’s death was only the beginning. What followed was a twisted path of botched investigations, lost evidence, and a justice system that seemed unwilling - or unable - to deliver the truth. Nearly three decades later, the scars of that night still linger, raising questions about power, corruption, and the uneasy shadows that hide behind picture perfect beauty. Today, we’re stepping into the mystery of Bermuda’s most infamous unsolved crime - where innocence met violence and where justice slipped away into the tide. Listen as we dive into Bermuda, the case of Rebecca Middleton, and how to stay alive on vacation. Do you have a story to share? It was just before dawn on August 12th, 1992, when thirty-six year old Pamela June Ray pulled into a motel parking lot in Panama City Beach, Florida. Her two young children were asleep in the backseat, unaware their lives were about to change forever. Pamela was seen speaking with a man near the motel pool. She locked the car, left her children inside, and walked away with him into the early morning darkness. Minutes later, someone heard a scream. By the time the sun came up, Pamela was gone - and she has never been seen again. Who was the man she followed? What happened in those missing minutes? And why, more than three decades later, does her disappearance remain one of Florida’s most haunting mysteries? He was a lawyer, an activist, a wild, larger-than-life figure who thrived in chaos. Then, one day in 1974, Oscar Zeta Acosta boarded a boat in Mexico—and vanished. No witnesses. No body. On the night of July 6th, 2019, in western Nebraska, a young father seemingly vanished into thin air. He was Chance Englebert, a 25 year old welder, cowboy and newlywed - gone without a trace. Earlier that day, Chance had been visiting his in-laws when a casual round of golf turned tense due to some remarks about his new job that angered him. Upset, he told his wife he wanted to go back home to Wyoming. When she didn’t agree to leave town - he got out of the car and walked away. Alone. On foot. With a storm brewing overhead.Surveillance cameras later captured him walking through town, looking down at his phone, like someone reading a map. He sent a final text that didn’t sound like it came from him. And just like that, no one ever heard from him again. His disappearance ignited one of the most baffling manhunts in the region. Drones, cadaver dogs, hundreds of volunteers on the ground, on horseback, and ATVs, across 2,400 acres. Yet despite all the efforts - they’ve never found a single clue. There are no answers.Listen as we dive into the Nebraska, the case of Chance Englebert, and how to stay alive on vacation.Do you have a story to share? In the fall of 2017, Enrique Garibay Ruiz—a physicist, mathematician, and writer—left Budapest for what he promised would be a short trip to the United States. He visited New York, then flew west to Los Angeles, checking into a hostel and renting a gray Toyota RAV4. He told his family he’d be home soon. But Enrique never came home. On October 3rd, he checked out of the hostel. On October 4th, he rented the car. On October 5th, he told his wife he was at the airport, waiting for a flight back to Hungary. Just hours later, in the early morning of October 6th, his credit card was swiped at a Carl’s Jr. near LAX. After that—nothing. The car was never returned. Enrique was never seen again. In one of the busiest cities in the world, he simply vanished. Listen as we dive into the Los Angeles, the case of Enrique Garibay Ruiz, and how to stay alive on vacation. It was spring break on Florida’s Gulf Coast - sun, surf, and twenty-two college students crammed into a rental house along Panama City Beach. Among them was 21 year old Reny Jose, a student from Rice University with a bright future ahead of him. But on the night of March 3, 2014, Reny stepped out into the evening and was never seen again. By the next morning, his friends reported him missing. Most of his belongings were left neatly in his room. His phone and some clothing turned up in a nearby trash bin, and more clothing was scattered by the beach. Sixteen of the students who had traveled with him quickly packed up and left town. What really happened in those missing hours? Did Reny wander into the waves? Was he the victim of foul play? Or is there a darker truth hidden in the silence of his friends? This is the story of a young man who vanished during spring break in one of America’s most infamous party towns - and the questions that have haunted his family, and investigators, for more than a decade. It was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime - a luxury island resort in the Maldives, white sand beaches, turquoise water stretching endlessly toward the horizon. For Giedre Vaskyte, a 33 year old Canadian woman, it was a last quiet getaway before her life changed forever. She was eight months pregnant, and the baby’s due date was just weeks away. In February 2021, she checked into the intercontinental Maamunagau with her husband, ready to soak in the sun and serenity. But on a warm, peaceful afternoon, she stepped away from the pool, walked toward the ocean - and vanished. The official story? That she drowned. But her family says that’s impossible. Mark Kilroy was a bright, athletic college student - a pre-med major with a promising future. Blowing off steam on a spring break getaway to the sun-drenched border town of Matamoros, Mexico. But somewhere between the neon-lit bars and crowded streets, Mark vanished without a trace. At first, it looked like another spring break gone wrong - just a kid who wandered off. But what investigators would uncover over the next few weeks was darker, stranger, and more terrifying than anyone could have imagined.Buried in the desert was a secret ranch… A bloodstained altar… And the remains of a human sacrifice performed by a cult that believed death could make them invisible to law enforcement. This isn’t just a story of murder. It’s a story of black magic, cartel power, and how one young man’s disappearance unraveled a ritualistic killing spree that shocked the world.Listen as we dive into Mexico, the case of Mark Kilroy, and how to stay alive on vacation.Do you have a story to share? In March 2000, 23-year-old Leah Roberts packed her Jeep Cherokee, grabbed her cat—and vanished. Not without a trace, but into the vast, mist-covered wilderness of the Pacific Northwest.Inspired by Jack Kerouac, Leah set off from North Carolina on a soul-searching road trip, leaving behind a trail of personal tragedy: the sudden death of both parents and a near-fatal car crash. She carried $3,000 in cash and no clear destination—just a sense that something was waiting for her out west.Days later, her Jeep was found wrecked at the bottom of a remote embankment near Bellingham, Washington. Inside: her clothes, blankets, an engagement ring tucked under the floor mat. Outside: no Leah. No blood. No footprints. No sign of struggle. But then came the troubling clues—tampered wires, male DNA, an unidentifiable fingerprint. Accident? Escape? Or something darker hidden in the shadows of the Cascades?Listen as we dive into Washington, the case of Leah Roberts, and how to stay alive on vacation.Do you have a story to share? He was young, ambitious, and heir to one of the most powerful families in American history. But Michael Rockefeller wasn’t chasing money, politics, or prestige. He was chasing meaning… Art. Culture. A sense of connection that no trust fund could buy.In 1961, the 23 year old Harvard graduate vanished off the coast of what is now Indonesia - just moments after saying he thought he could make it to shore. He was never seen again.Officially? They say he drowned. But in the decades since, a darker theory has emerged - one that leads you deep into the swamps of New Guinea, into a culture misunderstood, and into the unsettling possibility…. That Micahel didn't die in the water. He made it to land. And what happened next has haunted the Rockefeller legacy - and captivated the world - for over 60 years.Listen as we dive into New Guinea, the case of Michael Rockefeller, and how to stay alive on vacation.Do you have a story to share? Tom and Eileen Lonergan set off for what should have been an unforgettable day diving the Great Barrier Reef - clear skies, calm waters, and a boat full of tourists just like them. But when the dive boat returned to the shore, no one noticed they were missing. Not at first. Not for two whole days, until it was discovered their belongings were still on the boat - wallets, passports, towels… untouched. And Tom and Eileen? Gone. Were they forgotten in a tragic oversight… or did something else happen in those deep, endless waters? Their disappearance triggered a massive search, sparked global headlines, and left behind a string of disturbing clues - a diver’s slate scrawled with a desperate message, a torn wetsuit washed up weeks later, and eerie diary entries that hinted at something darker beneath the surface. No bodies were ever found. No final answers ever confirmed. Just the chilling question: how did two people vanish into the ocean without a trace… and why didn’t anyone notice until it was far too late?Listen as we dive into the Great Barrier Reef, the case of Tom & Eileen Lonergan, and how to stay alive on vacation.Do you have a story to share? When we talk about travel nightmares, we often picture what lurks outside - dark alleys, strangers with bad intentions, stories that begin with a missed train or a wrong run. But sometimes… the danger is already inside.Today, we’re opening the door on something even more haunting: fire. Sudden. Consuming, Unforgiving.Because for some travelers, the scariest part of their journey wasn’t a distant unknown - it was their bed. Their room. The place they thought they were safest. In this episode, we’re telling the stories of four devastating hostel fires: The Childers Palace Backpackers Hostel in Australia, where young backpackers from around the world came chasing sunshine and freedom - and never made it home. The Downunder Hostel fire in Sydney, Australia - where a broken alarm system and locked exits turned a simple stay into a fatal trap.A fire in Riga, Latvia - swift and deadly - inside an illegal hostel that should never have been open at all.And the Loafers Lodge fire in Wellington, New Zealand, where residents living in budget rooms were left scrambling for their lives in the early hours of the morning. Each of these stories is different. But they all ask the same, terrifying question: What happens when your escape route disappears? This isn’t about fear. It’s about awareness. Because travel should feel like possibility, not risk. Hostels should be spaces of laughter and late-night stories - not loss.So stay with me, as we retrace the final hours inside these hostels. When we pack our bags and check into a hostel, we’re chasing adventure. A new city, a bunk bed, the promise of strangers who might become friends - or at least someone to split a cab with. And honestly? I love staying in hostels. I’ve stayed in them all over - tiny ones in coastal towns to big ones in the heart of cities. They’re chaotic, friendly, weird, and wonderful. And for the most part, they feel safe. But behind the cheerful welcome signs and communal kitchens, something darker can hide.A stolen passport. A missing girl. A body in a room. From Australia to France to India, some travelers checked in… but never checked out. Today, I’m taking you around the world - one hostel at a time - to revisit the chilling true stories of backpackers who vanished, were attacked, or lost their lives in places meant to be safe havens for the wandering soul. It was a quiet spring morning in Idyllwild, California - April 7, 2017 - when 25 year old David O’Sullivan put on his backpack, stepped onto the Pacific Crest Trail, and vanished. The Irish hiker had come to America chasing a dream: to walk from Mexico to Canada, alone, through some of the country’s wildest landscapes. The day before, he’d sent a brief email from the town’s small library - his last known communication. Since then, there’s been nothing. No calls. No confirmed sightings. No trace of him. How does someone disappear on one of the most traveled trails in the US? What happened to David O’Sullivan? And where is he now? Listen as we dive into the Pacific Crest Trail, the case of David O'Sullivan, and how to stay alive on vacation. Do you have a story to share? She was known as “Shark Girl” - a fearless underwater photographer who swam with predators most of us only dare to watch on TV. At 48, Valerie de la Valdene had it all: a career that earned her a spot in the Women Divers Hall of Fame, features on Shark Week, a culinary education under a world-renowned chef, and the kind of wealth that came with a prestigious family name. But in June 2014, Valerie was found dead in the Galapagos Islands - a single gunshot wound to the left temple. Authorities called it a suicide. But the scene? It told a different story. And when you follow the trail of strange details and unanswered questions, it begins to look a lot less like self-destruction… and a lot more like murder. Listen as we dive into the Galápagos Islands, the case of Valerie de la Valdene, and how to stay alive on vacation. Do you have a story to share? In September 2019, a yellow Jeep Wrangler was found abandoned at a remote trailhead on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Everything inside looked normal—except the woman who rented it, Lucy Schuhmann, was missing. The 48-year-old traveler from Louisville, Kentucky, had come to the island alone, seeking peace and nature. She checked into a rental near Coral Bay, unpacked, and then vanished. Her belongings were left behind. Her ID was found in her daypack at the end of a trail. Despite extensive searches, Lucy has never been seen again. Was it a tragic accident, a planned disappearance—or is something darker hiding beneath the island’s serene surface? Listen as we dive into St John, the case of Lucy Schuhmann, and how to stay alive on vacation. One moment, 66 year old Raymond Ashcroft was walking through the legendary ruins of Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site deep in the Guatemalan rainforest. The next? He was gone. No struggle. In early 1959, nine hikers set out on a skiing expedition across the northern Ural Mountains—Igor Dyatlov, Yuri Doroshenko, Lyudmila Dubinina, Georgiy Krivonishenko, Alexander Kolevatov, Zinaida Kolmogorova, Rustem Slobodin, Nikolai Thibeaux-Brignolles, and Semyon Zolotaryov. Their journey would end in one of the most chilling and perplexing mysteries in modern history. On the night of February 1st, something terrifying forced them to flee their tent into the freezing wilderness—half-dressed and unprepared. Their bodies were discovered weeks later, scattered across the snow, with injuries that defied explanation. Decades later, diaries, photographs, and investigations have offered theories, ranging from natural disasters to the supernatural. But one question remains: What really happened to the Dyatlov 9?
