Ep 10531053: Generic Drugs | Skeptical Sunday

Are generic drugs as good as their name-brand counterparts? On Skeptical Sunday, Dave Farina compares their development, prices, and efficacy. Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by Is This Wi-Fi Organic?: A Guide to Spotting Misleading Science Online author and host of the Professor Dave Debates podcast, Dave Farina! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: Generic drugs contain the same active ingredients as brand-name drugs, but are typically much cheaper due to not having to absorb research and development costs. Drug patents typically last around 20 years, giving companies a period of market exclusivity to recoup their investment before generics can be produced. While the active ingredients are identical, there can be minor differences in inactive ingredients (excipients) between brand-name and generic drugs that may slightly affect bioavailability. Regulatory bodies like the FDA play a crucial role in ensuring drug safety and efficacy, though rare oversights can still occur. Consumers can make informed decisions about medications by understanding the similarities between brand-name and generic drugs, consulting with healthcare providers, and staying aware of drug safety information from reliable sources. This knowledge empowers individuals to potentially save money on prescriptions while still receiving effective treatment. Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Ep 10501050: Lisa Kaltenegger | In Search of Alien Life and Livable Worlds

Are we alone in the universe? Alien Earths author Lisa Kaltenegger joins us to discuss new discoveries in humanity's hunt for extraterrestrial life. What We Discuss with Lisa Kaltenegger: The universe contains billions of stars and galaxies, with an estimated one out of five stars having a planet that could be similar to Earth in terms of potential habitability. Scientists use various methods to detect exoplanets, including observing changes in starlight and analyzing the light spectrum of planets to detect signs of life-sustaining elements like oxygen and methane. The search for extraterrestrial life involves looking for planets in the "habitable zone" or "Goldilocks zone" around stars, where conditions might allow for liquid water on the surface. The observable universe is limited by the speed of light and the age of the universe (approximately 13.7 billion years), meaning we can only see as far as light has had time to travel since the Big Bang. Anyone can contribute to space exploration and scientific discovery by staying curious, learning about new discoveries, and supporting science education. Even simple actions like looking up at the night sky and wondering about our place in the universe can inspire a lifelong passion for science and exploration. And much more... Ep 10481048: Shaun Attwood | From Raves to Riches to Ruin Part Two

Raves, riches, and ruin: Former ecstasy kingpin Shaun Attwood exposes the dangerous world of drug trafficking and its violent criminal connections. [Pt 2/2 — find Pt 1 here!] What We Discuss: The extreme brutality and inhumane conditions in the United States prison system, including rampant violence, unsanitary living conditions, and inadequate medical care. The complex and dangerous social dynamics within prison, including racial segregation, gang politics, and the constant threat of violence. The psychological impact of long-term incarceration, including the difficulty of reintegrating into society and the lasting trauma experienced by both inmates and their families. The systemic issues within the American prison system, particularly the profit-driven motives of private prisons that perpetuate a cycle of crime and recidivism rather than focusing on rehabilitation. The power of personal transformation and education, as demonstrated by Shaun's journey from drug kingpin to advocate for prison reform. His story shows that even in the darkest circumstances, individuals can find ways to grow, learn, and ultimately use their experiences to make a positive impact on society. Ep 10471047: Shaun Attwood | From Raves to Riches to Ruin Part One

Raves, riches, and ruin: Former ecstasy kingpin Shaun Attwood exposes the dangerous world of drug trafficking and its violent criminal connections. [Pt 1/2] What We Discuss: Shaun Attwood, a former stockbroker turned drug dealer, recounts his journey from the UK to Arizona, where he became involved in the rave scene and eventually established a large ecstasy distribution network. Shaun's story involves interactions with dangerous individuals, including members of the Mexican Mafia and associates of former show guest Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, highlighting the violent and unpredictable nature of the drug trade. The narrative illustrates the gradual escalation of criminal activities and the blurring of moral boundaries as Shaun became more deeply entrenched in the drug world. Shaun describes the intense paranoia and constant threat of violence that accompanied his lifestyle, demonstrating the high personal cost of his choices. Despite the dark nature of the story, Shaun's experiences offer valuable insights into the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of making positive life choices. His journey towards redemption, which will be further explored in part two later this week, serves as a powerful reminder that it's never too late to change course and seek a better path in life. Ep 10461046: Hydrotherapy | Skeptical Sunday

Ice plunges, hot soaks, and eight glasses a day: Jessica Wynn splashes cold water on hydrotherapy myths and explores potential benefits on Skeptical Sunday! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Hydrotherapy, which includes various uses of water for health purposes, lacks substantial scientific evidence for many of its claimed benefits, especially for generally healthy individuals. The popular belief that we need to drink eight glasses of water a day is a myth perpetuated by beverage companies. Our bodies are well-equipped to signal thirst when we need hydration. Extreme temperature changes in hydrotherapy, such as alternating between hot and cold water, can be dangerous and potentially lead to fainting, heart problems, or drowning. Many of the alleged benefits of hydrotherapy, such as improved circulation or muscle recovery, can often be achieved through other, potentially safer methods like exercise or breathing techniques. Hydrotherapy does show promise in specific medical contexts, such as pain management for fibromyalgia, easing labor during childbirth, and assisting with certain rehabilitation exercises. If you're interested in exploring hydrotherapy for health reasons, consult with a medical professional to determine if it's appropriate for your individual needs and how to practice it safely. Ep 10431043: Andrew Gold | Unveiling the Psychology of Secrets

Are secrets a burden or social glue? Psychology of Secrets author Andrew Gold delves into the evolutionary roots and modern impacts of hiding information. What We Discuss with Andrew Gold: Keeping secrets can be physically and emotionally painful for humans. This evolved as a mechanism to encourage social cohesion and information sharing within tribal communities. There's a difference between secrets and privacy. What is considered a secret versus private information often depends on societal norms and can change over time. Technology is making it increasingly difficult to keep secrets, with devices like smartwatches and phones potentially revealing information we'd rather keep hidden. Virtue signaling and victim signaling are common behaviors, especially on social media, where people may pretend to hold certain beliefs or experiences for status or attention. Sharing appropriate secrets can increase intimacy and strengthen relationships. By thoughtfully opening up to others, we can build deeper connections and foster trust, leading to more meaningful interactions and a stronger support network. And much more... Ep 10421042: Sex Trafficking | Skeptical Sunday

Is sex trafficking really a global crisis or just an overblown conspiracy theory? Andrew Gold reveals truths and misconceptions on this Skeptical Sunday. Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by On the Edge host Andrew Gold! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Sex trafficking knows no borders, and the United States stands out as a particularly active region for this crime. It victimizes individuals regardless of age — notably, more than a fourth of those trafficked are minors. The scale of sex trafficking is difficult to determine accurately, with estimates varying widely. This uncertainty stems from the underground nature of the crime and challenges in data collection. Sex trafficking victims often suffer severe physical and mental health consequences, including STIs, injuries, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse issues. The average lifespan of women in prostitution is tragically short at around 34 years. The issue of sex trafficking is frequently politicized and weaponized, sometimes exaggerated for political gain. However, it remains a serious problem that ruins thousands of lives through organized crime networks and individual traffickers. Education and awareness are key tools in combating sex trafficking. By learning about the issue, discussing it openly, and spreading accurate information, we can help inform potential victims about the dangers and contribute to prevention efforts. Everyone can play a role in this by staying informed and sharing knowledge with others. Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Ep 10401040: Tareena Shakil | An ISIS Recruit's Journey and Escape Part Two

How does ISIS radicalize Westerners? Here, Tareena Shakil, who joined and escaped the group, reveals the manipulation behind her own recruitment. [Pt. 2/2 — find part 1 here!] What We Discuss: Tareena Shakil, a British woman, ran away to join ISIS in Syria in 2014 after experiencing domestic abuse and being radicalized online. While in Syria, Tareena realized ISIS was not what she expected and decided to escape across the border to Turkey with her young son. Ep 10391039: Tareena Shakil | An ISIS Recruit's Journey and Escape Part One

How does ISIS radicalize Westerners? Here, Tareena Shakil, who joined and escaped the group, reveals the manipulation behind her own recruitment. [Pt. 1/2] What We Discuss: Tareena Shakil, a British woman, traveled to Syria with her young son and joined ISIS in 2014 at age 24 after being groomed online for about six weeks. Tareena's decision to join ISIS was influenced by a combination of factors, including online radicalization, a desire to escape an abusive relationship, and a misguided attempt at religious devotion. While in Syria, Tareena quickly realized she had made a mistake and wanted to leave. She witnessed disturbing events and became increasingly fearful for her and her son's safety. After about eight weeks, Tareena managed to escape ISIS-controlled territory with her son and return to the UK, where she was subsequently arrested and became the first British woman jailed for joining ISIS. Tareena's story highlights the importance of critical thinking, especially when it comes to online interactions and major life decisions. Her experience serves as a powerful reminder to thoroughly research and question information from unfamiliar sources, seek diverse perspectives, and consult trusted friends or family members before making life-altering choices based on online interactions. This time around, we’re joined by skeptic, comedian, and podcaster Michael Regilio! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: Gold has been valued throughout human history, playing a significant role in economics, trade, and even exploration. It has been used as currency and the basis for monetary systems like the gold standard. The gold standard, which linked the value of currency to gold, was widely adopted but eventually abandoned. The United States officially ended its use of the gold standard in 1971 under President Nixon. There are many scams and misleading practices in the gold market, particularly involving the sale of gold coins. These often target older, more conservative individuals by playing on fears of government overreach and economic instability. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings may not always be reliable indicators of a company's trustworthiness, as some businesses can effectively buy high ratings through membership. While it's important to be cautious about gold-related investments, you can still make informed decisions about diversifying your portfolio. Educate yourself on the current gold market, focus on reputable dealers if considering gold purchases, and consult with trusted financial advisors to determine if and how gold might fit into your overall investment strategy. Ep 10361036: James Sexton | A Divorce Lawyer's Guide to Lasting Love Part Two

Renowned divorce lawyer James Sexton reveals the secrets to maintaining a healthy marriage and avoiding his office altogether! [Pt. 2/2 — find part 1 here!] What We Discuss with James Sexton: Many people enter marriage without understanding its legal implications. James Sexton estimates that 95% of people who come to his office are learning about the marriage contract for the first time. Social media has made infidelity much easier and more accessible. James notes that platforms like Facebook and Instagram create opportunities for inappropriate private conversations and flirtations. Prenuptial agreements are becoming increasingly common, especially among younger people in their 20s and 30s. James observes a growing pragmatism and realism in approaching marriage. All marriages end, either through death or divorce. James encourages people to be mindful of endings, as it can make them more appreciative of their current relationships. Being open and honest about your concerns and fears in a relationship can strengthen your bond. Having pragmatic conversations about finances, living arrangements, and potential scenarios doesn't diminish romance — instead, it demonstrates care and foresight for your partner's well-being. Consider having these discussions and potentially creating a prenuptial agreement to ensure you're both on the same page about your future together. Ep 10351035: James Sexton | A Divorce Lawyer's Guide to Lasting Love Part One

Renowned divorce lawyer James Sexton reveals the secrets to maintaining a healthy marriage and avoiding his office altogether! [Pt. 1/2] What We Discuss with James Sexton: Marriage is statistically risky, with a 56% failure rate for first marriages. There's often an economic aspect to relationships that people don't openly discuss. People tend to fall in love quickly but fall out of love slowly. Constantly criticizing or trash-talking your partner, even in jest with friends, can be toxic to a relationship. Preventative maintenance is key to a healthy relationship. Just as you wouldn't wait until your teeth are falling out to go to the dentist, don't wait for major issues to arise in your relationship. Ep 10341034: Fat-Free Foods | Skeptical Sunday

On Skeptical Sunday, Michael Regilio dishes out the skinny on fat-free foods and their weighty consequences that led to our 21st-century obesity epidemic! Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by skeptic, comedian, and podcaster Michael Regilio! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: The low-fat diet trend, popularized in the 1960s and 1970s, was based on flawed science and cherry-picked data, particularly from the selective research of physiologist Ancel Keys. Removing fat from food products often led to increased sugar and refined carbohydrate content, contributing to the obesity and diabetes epidemics in the United States. The American Heart Association and other institutions have been slow to change their dietary recommendations due to conflicts of interest and corporate donations. Consuming healthy fats is essential for proper bodily functions, and low-fat diets have not been shown to prevent cardiovascular disease or cancer. By educating ourselves on proper nutrition, focusing on whole foods, and reducing refined carbohydrates and processed foods, we can take control of our health and potentially reverse or prevent diet-related maladies like type 2 diabetes. Your ex-best friend groped someone, and now he's flirting with a mutual friend on Twitter. Do you warn her or stay out of it? Welcome to Feedback Friday! How can you warn her about his problematic history without overstepping boundaries? Your 93-year-old mother, with whom you've had a rocky relationship, stole a cherished toy your late father gifted to you and gave it to your sibling. This was the last straw in a long history of mistreatment. How do you move forward and process these complex emotions? As an educator, you accepted a job at a challenging school, only to have your dream school offer you a position afterward. Due to district rules, you can't take the better offer. How do you cope with this regret and make the best of your upcoming school year? Your wife adopted a puppy without consulting you, despite your objections. Now she's talking about getting another one, and you feel your concerns are being ignored. How do you address this communication breakdown and assert yourself in your marriage? Recommendation of the Week: Secrets of the Octopus on Nat Geo TV. You're a single mother raising your five-year-old daughter alone after her father chose not to be involved, despite living nearby. Ep 10321032: Sarah Hill | How Birth Control Rewires Women's Brains Part Two

Beyond pregnancy prevention, birth control pills affect the way women think and behave. Dr. Sarah Hill explains their invisible impacts here! [Part 2/2 — find part 1 here!] What We Discuss: Birth control pills can potentially affect brain development in teenagers, raising concerns about prescribing them for non-contraceptive reasons like acne treatment. There's a possible link between birth control use and increased risk of depression, especially in younger women (up to 300% increased risk for teenagers). The politicization of birth control information has led to extreme views on both sides, making it difficult for women to access balanced, scientifically accurate information. Current research methods may mask individual experiences with birth control, as averaging results can hide significant variations among women. How women can empower themselves to take control of their reproductive health while being mindful of potential impacts on their overall well-being. Ep 10311031: Sarah Hill | How Birth Control Rewires Women's Brains Part One

Beyond pregnancy prevention, birth control pills affect the way women think and behave. Dr. Sarah Hill explains their invisible impacts here! [Part 1/2] What We Discuss: Birth control pills affect more than just fertility — they can influence a woman's partner preferences, career choices, and overall behavior due to hormonal changes. Women on birth control may choose different types of partners compared to when they're off the pill, potentially leading to relationship changes if they stop taking it. The pill can alter women's stress responses and immune function, potentially increasing the risk of anxiety, depression, and autoimmune issues. Birth control pills may reduce sexual desire and change how women perceive attraction cues in potential partners. Women can make more informed decisions about their health and relationships by understanding these effects. Consider discussing with a healthcare provider about trying periods off birth control when making major life decisions or choosing long-term partners. And much more... Ep 10301030: Exorcism | Skeptical Sunday

If you're possessed by curiosity about the efficacy of exorcisms to eradicate evils or illnesses, Andrew Gold compels you to enjoy this Skeptical Sunday! Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by On the Edge host Andrew Gold! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: Exorcism gained widespread popularity after the release of the movie The Exorcist in 1973, which dramatically influenced beliefs about demonic possession and exorcism practices worldwide. While exorcism is not scientifically valid, it can sometimes provide temporary relief through placebo effects, adrenaline rushes, and psychological catharsis. However, these effects are typically short-lived and do not address underlying mental health issues. Exorcism practices can be dangerous, with some cases resulting in injury or death, particularly when performed on vulnerable individuals or used as a substitute for proper medical and psychological care. The Catholic Church and other religious institutions have embraced exorcism to varying degrees, with some offering training courses and appointing official exorcists, despite the lack of scientific evidence supporting its efficacy. To protect yourself and others from potential harm, it's important to educate yourself about mental health, recognize the signs of psychological distress, and seek professional medical and psychological help when needed. By understanding the underlying causes of behavioral issues, we can promote more effective and scientifically backed approaches to healing and personal growth. Why did the United States have to rebuild its embassy in Moscow from the ground up in the early ’90s? How aspiring artists like Jonna and her late husband Antonio (played by Ben Affleck in Argo) got involved in working for the CIA. Ep 10261026: Hypnosis | Skeptical Sunday

Is hypnosis helpful or just hyped hooey? Listen to the sound of Andrew Gold's voice as we explore its potential and limitations here on Skeptical Sunday! Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by On the Edge host Andrew Gold! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Hypnosis is real but often misunderstood. It's more akin to guided concentration than the sensationalized mind control portrayed in movies and books. Hypnosis has shown effectiveness in various fields, including pain management, anxiety reduction, and sports psychology, but its results can be variable and are not guaranteed for everyone. Scientific studies using fMRI scans have shown that hypnosis can genuinely affect brain activity, particularly in areas related to memory recall and visualization. Despite popular misconceptions, hypnosis cannot make people act against their will or moral code. The idea of hypnosis as a form of mind control is largely a myth perpetuated by media. Hypnosis, when approached with an open mind and realistic expectations, can be a valuable tool for personal development. By learning techniques like visualization, which is a form of self-hypnosis used by successful athletes, individuals can potentially enhance their performance in various aspects of life, from public speaking to sports. Ep 10241024: Blake Eastman | Can Machines Read People Better Than Humans?

Body language expert Blake Eastman debunks nonverbal myths and reveals how AI is revolutionizing our understanding of human behavior and communication! What We Discuss with Blake Eastman: Traditional body language "rules" (like crossed arms meaning resistance or eye movements indicating lying) are often oversimplified and unreliable. Context, individual differences, and cultural factors play a significant role in interpreting nonverbal behavior. Detecting lies through body language alone is not reliable. Even trained professionals struggle to accurately identify deception based solely on nonverbal cues. Social context and cultural norms greatly influence how we interpret and display nonverbal behavior. What's considered appropriate or meaningful in one culture may be perceived differently in another. AI and machine learning are being developed to analyze human behavior, including facial expressions, voice patterns, and other nonverbal cues. This technology has potential applications in various fields, including healthcare and communication. The development of AI that can read human behavior raises both exciting possibilities and ethical concerns that need to be carefully considered. And much more... Ep 10231023: Plastic Surgery | Skeptical Sunday

Nip, tuck, and...regret? Michael Regilio examines plastic surgery's complex history — from ancient noses to modern BBLs — on this Skeptical Sunday! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: Plastic surgery has a long history dating back to ancient times, originally developed to help people with disfigurements or injuries, but has evolved to include cosmetic procedures. The popularity of plastic surgery has increased dramatically worldwide, driven by factors such as social media, filters, and changing beauty standards. In some countries, like South Korea and China, it has become deeply ingrained in the culture. There are significant risks associated with plastic surgery, including medical complications, psychological issues, and the potential for addiction. Non-specialists performing procedures and the rise of medical tourism add to these concerns. Body dysmorphia and societal pressures play a significant role in the plastic surgery trend, particularly affecting young people's self-esteem and body image. People considering plastic surgery can take positive steps to make informed decisions: research the credentials of surgeons, ensuring they are board-certified in plastic surgery; consider non-surgical alternatives and natural aging processes; focus on building self-esteem and body acceptance through healthy lifestyle choices and mental health support; and engage in open discussions about beauty standards and the potential impacts of social media on self-image. Ep 10211021: Konstantin Samoilov | Putin's Russia: An Insider's Perspective

Inside Russia YouTuber Konstantin Samoilov exposes what life under Vladimir Putin has been like — from fleeing mobilization to facing KGB threats abroad. What We Discuss with Konstantin Samoilov: Why someone who has lived through the transition of Russia from a Soviet superpower to an oligarchic dictatorship now lives in exile and sleeps with one eye open. How the arrival of companies like McDonald's in the 1990s had a significant psychological impact on Russians, challenging their perceptions of the West. The stark differences between American meritocracy and the "blat" (nepotism) system prevalent in Russia, which limits opportunities for those without connections. How, contrary to official propaganda, the Russian economy is suffering due to sanctions, brain drain, a mass population exodus of three million, and a focus on military production at the expense of other sectors. Why Russian state media has shifted from focusing solely on controlling internal narratives to actively trying to shape international perceptions of Russia. And much more... Ep 10201020: Sovereign Citizens | Skeptical Sunday

Is there a legal "cheat code" for avoiding US laws? Michael Regilio investigates this and other wild things sovereign citizens believe on Skeptical Sunday! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: The Sovereign Citizen Movement is a fringe group that believes they are not subject to US laws or government authority. They often engage in pseudo-legal arguments and tactics to avoid taxes, licenses, and other societal obligations. The ideology has spread beyond the US to countries like Canada, the UK, Australia, and parts of Europe, indicating it's a growing international phenomenon. The movement has roots in anti-Semitism, white nationalism, and conspiracy theories. It appeals to people in financial distress by promising ways to eliminate debts and access secret government accounts. Sovereign citizen beliefs have no legal validity and have never been successful in court. However, the movement has an estimated 200,000-300,000 adherents in the US. Some sovereign citizens have engaged in violence against law enforcement and government officials. The movement is considered one of the most dangerous domestic extremist groups by US authorities. While sovereign citizen beliefs are misguided and potentially dangerous, the best response is to promote good ideas and accurate information. By educating ourselves and others about the law, government, and civic responsibilities, we can help counter the spread of these harmful ideologies. Ep 10181018: Phil Elwood | Manipulating Media for All the Worst Humans

All the Worst Humans author Phil Elwood is here to illustrate his past life as a PR operative who made powerful pariahs palatable to public perception! What We Discuss with Phil Elwood: Phil Elwood's career as a PR operative for notorious figures was essentially a real-life version of being a supervillain's henchman, involving ethically dubious practices to manipulate public perception. Phil's work took him into the belly of the beast, collaborating with shady organizations and visiting dangerous locations to spin narratives for some of the world's most detestable characters. The moral weight of constantly lying and bending the truth for nefarious clients exacted a heavy toll on Phil's mental health, leading to substance abuse and requiring intensive therapy. Phil's experiences provide a rare, candid glimpse into the dark underbelly of global PR and political spin, exposing the extent to which public perception can be contrived. Despite his ethically questionable past, Phil's story offers hope for redemption. He has since established clear moral boundaries in his work, demonstrating that it's possible to learn from past mistakes and align one's career with their values. And much more... Ep 10171017: The End of the World | Skeptical Sunday

If you're constantly obsessed over predictions that the end of the world is nigh, Andrew Gold has some (mostly) good news for us on this Skeptical Sunday! Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by On the Edge host Andrew Gold! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Throughout history, would-be prophets and doomsaying groups have predicted the end of the world, but all have been wrong so far. This includes religious prophecies, cult beliefs, and misinterpretations of ancient calendars like the 2012 Mayan prediction. The concept of the end of the world is often used by religions and cults to control their members, instilling fear and promoting compliance with their rules and beliefs. There are several potential threats to humanity's survival, including climate change, nuclear war, pandemics, resource depletion, and the development of artificial intelligence. However, the likelihood of these causing a complete end to humanity is debated. The Fermi Paradox and the concept of the Great Filter suggest that advanced civilizations may face barriers to long-term survival, which could explain why we haven't encountered alien life despite the vastness of the universe. While concerns about global threats are valid, it's important to maintain perspective and not become overly anxious. Humanity has shown resilience and innovation in the face of past challenges. By staying informed, curious, and skeptical, we can work towards addressing potential threats and shaping a positive future for ourselves and future generations. AI and biotech are rapidly changing our world. Superconvergence author Jamie Metzl explores the risks and rewards of this unprecedented era! [Part 2/2 — find part 1 here!] What We Discuss with Jamie Metzl: AI and genetics are advancing rapidly, leading to potential breakthroughs in medicine, agriculture, and solving global challenges like climate change and food scarcity. The development of cell-cultivated meat and other animal products could significantly reduce environmental impact and animal cruelty associated with industrial agriculture. There are concerns about unforeseen consequences of genetic engineering and AI, including potential misuse of technology and ethical dilemmas. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of investigating disease origins thoroughly and following scientific evidence, even when it leads to uncomfortable conclusions. Everyone can and should participate in discussions about emerging technologies and their implications. By educating ourselves on these topics, we can contribute to shaping a better future that balances innovation with ethical considerations and societal needs. Ep 10141014: Jamie Metzl | AI Solutions for Hunger, Health, & Habitat Part One

AI and biotech are rapidly changing our world. Superconvergence author Jamie Metzl explores the risks and rewards of this unprecedented era! [Part 1/2] What We Discuss with Jamie Metzl: Technological progress is accelerating exponentially. According to Superconvergence author Jamie Metzl, the scientific advancements made in the next 14 years will outdo those of the last century, followed by another century's worth in only seven years. AI (artificial intelligence) is not just a standalone technology, but will be integrated into every aspect of our lives, boosting the rate of scientific discoveries and problem-solving across all fields. Advances in genetic engineering and reproductive technologies may lead to the ability to select and modify embryos for desired traits, raising ethical questions and potentially redirecting the future of human evolution. The rapid pace of technological change is outstripping our evolved ability to comprehend it, leading to challenges in adapting and governing these new technologies responsibly. To navigate this rapidly changing world, humanity should focus on developing a clear set of values and goals to guide its collective use of technology. Ep 10131013: Big Dairy | Skeptical Sunday

Big Dairy's impact on health and policy is udderly shocking. Michael Regilio milks the truth from this cash cow of an industry on Skeptical Sunday! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: Milk consumption by adults has not been natural for most of human history. About 65% of the global population has reduced ability to digest lactose, with some populations experiencing nearly 100% lactose intolerance. The dairy industry, with government support, has heavily promoted milk consumption despite questionable health benefits. This includes school milk programs and marketing campaigns like "Got Milk?" Raw milk can be dangerous, potentially causing diseases like typhoid and tuberculosis. Pasteurization made milk safer, but the dairy industry initially resisted it. The US government has repeatedly subsidized and bailed out the dairy industry, including buying surplus milk and cheese. This has led to an artificial inflation of the dairy market. Good news for the lactose averse: there are many alternative sources for the nutrients found in milk. People can obtain calcium from foods like almonds, figs, kale, tofu, and sweet potatoes. By exploring these options, people can make informed dietary choices that align with their health needs and preferences. Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. What We Discuss with Dr. Anthony Fauci: The importance of transparency and honesty in public health communication, even when it means delivering inconvenient truths or disagreeing with political leaders. How social media and political polarization amplified attacks on public health officials and spread misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Why the changing guidance on masks over the course of the pandemic was due to evolving scientific understanding, not flip-flopping. Ep 10101010: Participation Trophies | Skeptical Sunday

Are participation trophies ruining kids? Jason Feifer debunks myths and reveals the surprising century-long history behind the debate on Skeptical Sunday! Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we're joined by Jason Feifer, the editor in chief of Entrepreneur magazine, host of the Build for Tomorrow podcast, and author of Build for Tomorrow: An Action Plan for Embracing Change, Adapting Fast, and Future-Proofing Your Career. On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: As it turns out, participation trophies aren't some newfangled millennial invention. These shiny symbols of showing up have been collecting dust on shelves since your great-grandpappy was in short pants. We're talking 1922, folks — when the biggest participation trophy was surviving the Spanish Flu! All of these folks bellyaching about participation trophies probably have a few lurking in their own attics. It's like complaining about kids these days and their gimmicky rock music while air-guitaring to Led Zeppelin. Pot, meet kettle — you're both made of participation trophy material. Despite what the armchair psychologists down at the local watering hole might tell you, there's no scientific evidence that participation trophies turn kids into snowflakes. As they grow, kids naturally get more interested in winning than just showing up — like trading in their tricycle for a Harley. The whole participation trophy hullabaloo is less about plastic awards and more about our collective freak-out over parenting, work ethic, and why these darn kids won't get off our lawns. It's just generational anxiety dressed up in a well-worn, borrowed suit. Want to level up your success game? Ditch the black-and-white thinking. Winning's got more flavors than Baskin-Robbins, so keep an open mind for what's possible. Embrace the past, eye the future, and you'll be batting home runs with life's curveballs like a pro. How can you get through this domestic minefield without blowing up your wife's relationship with her spendthrift sibling — and your sanity? You're a woman who's always played for Team Dude, but lately you've been crushing hard on your sapphic bestie. The long-term forecast is cloudy with a chance of identity crisis, but you can't get her out of your head. How will you solve this romantic Rubik's Cube without peeling off the stickers? Halfway through your Master of Legal Studies program, an ad for AI legal services popped up. Suddenly, your degree looks about as future-proof as a Blockbuster membership card. How can you safeguard your Atticus Finch aspirations without being ground down by the mocking march of the machines? [Thanks — again — to attorney Corbin Payne for helping us answer this one!] You've got front-row seats to a family's horror show, complete with questionable parenting and kids who look like they could use a hug (or therapy). As a concerned friend whose perspective is admittedly biased by your own abusive upbringing, how can you swoop in for the save without nuking your relationship or crossing lines that can't be uncrossed? You're the company's sales superstar who just got kneecapped by the corporate fun police. After pouring your heart and soul into a presentation that was deader on arrival than disco, how will you dust yourself off and keep your mojo intact when the higher-ups have made it clear your ideas are about as well-received as a Christmas morning telemarketer? Ep 10081008: Brian Klaas | Embracing Uncertainty in a World of Flukes

Unexpected moments can change the world. Brian Klaas, author of Fluke, reveals how embracing life's randomness can empower us to make a difference. What We Discuss with Brian Klaas: Tiny actions or events can have massive downstream effects and consequences, as illustrated by historical examples like how a decades-old vacation spared Kyoto from nuclear bombing in WWII. Our lives and human history are shaped by chaos theory and random flukes, such as the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs or chance evolutionary events that led to complex life. Humans have cognitive biases that make us seek patterns and explanations, even when events are random. This can lead to superstitions, conspiracy theories, and a false sense of control. Wealth and success are often more influenced by luck and arbitrary factors than we like to admit, challenging the idea of pure meritocracy. While we can't control everything, we can influence the world around us through our actions. By embracing this mindset, we can feel more empowered and find meaning in our daily choices, recognizing that even small moments can have a significant impact on the future. And much more... Ep 10061006: Dr. Ramani | Surviving and Recovering from Narcissistic Abuse

It’s Not You author Dr. Ramani Durvasula is here to help us identify narcissists, overcome the abuse we suffer in relationships with them, and heal. What We Discuss with Dr. Ramani Durvasula: Narcissists can often be recognized by common traits like being know-it-alls, interrupting frequently, driving dangerously, throwing tantrums when frustrated, and displaying a strong sense of entitlement. But what kind of narcissists are you dealing with in your everyday life? Strategies for coping with narcissistic relationships when leaving is not an option. The role of cognitive dissonance in keeping people trapped in narcissistic relationships and how creating a written record of abusive behaviors can help overcome this psychological barrier. Growing up with a narcissistic parent can lead to difficulty forming one's own identity and a tendency to accommodate others' needs while suppressing one's own. This pattern can make a person more vulnerable to entering narcissistic relationships in adulthood. While it may seem daunting, healing from a narcissistic relationship is possible. By developing self-compassion, understanding that the abuse was not your fault, and gradually reclaiming aspects of your life that you enjoy (like hobbies, favorite foods, or social activities), you can begin to rebuild your sense of self and create a fulfilling life, even if the process takes time. And much more... Ep 10051005: David Fajgenbaum | Leveraging AI to Cure Rare Diseases

After treating his own rare disease, Chasing My Cure author David Fajgenbaum explains how existing drugs can help other sufferers survive the unknown. What We Discuss with David Fajgenbaum: Dr. David Fajgenbaum nearly died multiple times from a rare ailment called Castleman disease, for which there was no effective treatment available. The current healthcare system does not incentivize pharmaceutical companies to find new uses for existing drugs, especially for rare diseases, leaving many potential treatments undiscovered. Driven by his own experiences, Dr. Fajgenbaum realized that many existing FDA-approved drugs could be used to fight rare diseases for which they weren't originally intended. Dr. Fajgenbaum founded Every Cure, a nonprofit organization that uses AI to match existing drugs with rare diseases they could potentially treat, greatly accelerating the process of finding cures. You can make a positive impact by supporting organizations like Every Cure, which are working tirelessly to find treatments for rare diseases using innovative approaches. Consider donating to their cause, spreading awareness about their mission, or even sharing your own experiences with off-label drug use that has helped you or someone you know. Every contribution, no matter how small, can help bring hope and relief to those suffering from rare diseases. And much more... Ep 10041004: Memory | Skeptical Sunday

Misconceptions about memory are abundant, so Jessica Wynn is here to let us know which ones we're better off forgetting on this latest Skeptical Sunday! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: Our memories are more complex than just being videos that we can simply file away and retrieve at will. There are three main processes that characterize how memory works: encoding, storage, and recall. Forgetting is a feature, not a bug. Some memories are more easily recalled than others, and our memories can be manipulated by a variety of factors. While hotly debated, the concept of "repressed memories" doesn't seem to have the science to back it. Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
