Ep 885885: No Need to Be Chummy with a Grandad So Scummy | Feedback Friday
Are you right to cut ties with your grandpa now that his sociopathic, incestuous, and pedophilic history has come to light? Welcome to Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at [email protected]. Now let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Some people in your family disagree with your decision to cut ties with Grandpa now that his sociopathic, incestuous, and pedophilic history has come to light. What should you do? [Thanks to Maria Socolof and Brad Watts for helping us with another heavy one!] Six months off weed during a manic period brought you artistic success and closeness to your wife and kids. Now, in a 'down' time, an urge to resume communion with the righteous herb has returned — much to the chagrin of your wife. Is it worth it? Your father gave you and your siblings each $100,000 to use for investing in real estate. While you did use much of it to put a down payment on a house, you wasted about half self-soothing while dealing with a depressing, friendless work assignment in the middle of nowhere. Though you know your dad would be disappointed, should you come clean? Management at your company has become toxic since a recent merger, and they want you to jump through the hoop of finishing your bachelor's degree to make an extra $10,000 in your current position. Unfortunately, a Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis has you worried you might not be up to the challenge. What's your best move?[Thanks to HR professional Joanna Tate for helping us with this one!] Is there value in platforming divisive figures like RFK Jr. on this show? Ep 884884: What We Can Learn from Envy | Deep Dive
Join Jordan and Gabe for this deep dive into the lessons we can learn when we enlist envy as a teacher rather than a bitter reminder of what we don't have. What We Discuss: Merriam-Webster defines envy as "painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage." Envy is rooted in evolutionary psychology as an aid to our survival, but modern life amplifies and distorts it into an overwhelming compulsion that can hurt more than help. When envy crops up in our lives, it often contains two different desires within it: a desire for the thing we wish we had, and a desire to "beat" the person who has it. Envy could be about wanting something we don’t have, or it could be about being someone we wish we were — or maybe it’s both, and wanting the thing is really just a clever way of trying to become the person who has it. Envy can teach us about our genuine desires and goals, helping us focus on what truly matters to us. By practicing gratitude, distinguishing between sources and objects of envy, and acting on insights to overcome it, we can transform envy into a driving force for self-improvement and collaboration, shifting from "this joy is mine" to "this joy is ours." Ep 883883: Annie Ikpa | The Campaign to End Child Sacrifice
Video editor Annie Ikpa explains how she galvanized a movement to ban child sacrifice in Uganda, and what's in store for the fight ahead. What We Discuss with Annie Ikpa: Why child sacrifice is so common in Uganda that Annie Ikpa had to spend seven years campaigning for a law against it. Who hires the exploitative witch doctors who perform these sacrifices in the name of fortune or other earthly delights? How children are selected for sacrifice because they're relatively easy to abduct, less likely to fight back, and are regarded by true believers as spiritually more "pure" than adults. Why even a child who is "lucky" enough to survive a sacrifice is left mentally and physically traumatized — often with brutal scars across their bodies, missing limbs, and/or mutilated genitals. What you can do to help raise awareness and put a stop to this barbarous practice that continues in spite of positive strides in preventative legislation. And much more... Ep 882882: Homeopathy | Skeptical Sunday
Is homeopathy an effective alternative medicine or an unproven, unscientific sham? Comedian Michael Regilio joins us for Skeptical Sunday to find out! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Homeopathy is an alternative medicine with a long history, relying on the principle of "like cures like" and the idea that water has memory. Despite lacking scientific proof, homeopathic products are widely marketed and sold, even though they're required to carry warnings of unproven efficacy. Homeopathic practices have faced criticism, and DNA testing has even revealed mislabeled or diluted ingredients and dangerous products on the market. Some people turn to homeopathy for stress relief and placebo effects, but many are unaware of its lack of scientific basis. While there's pushback against homeopathy, it continues to thrive due to marketing, endorsements by celebrities, and regulatory gaps. Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Ep 881881: Finding Your Angle in Covert Love Triangle | Feedback Friday
When the circle of trust between you, your best friend, and his girlfriend accidentally turns into a covert love triangle, it might be Feedback Friday! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: The circle of trust between you, your best friend, and his girlfriend has accidentally turned into a covert love triangle. Now what happens? Your gaming group decided to officially ostracize its most annoying member, and you've wrestled with guilt and anxiety over the way it was done. Is there a way to smooth things over with him as a friend even if the group doesn't necessarily want to give him a second chance? A man 11 years your senior abruptly ended a one-month long-distance relationship two days after you first became physically intimate, and all you can wonder is: why? As a high school freshman with a small group of close friends, you're devastated to discover your best friend is moving away with his family to another state. How do you find and connect with new people? How do you create long-lasting relationships? Sometimes, it's the biggest betrayals delivered by the people we thought we could trust most during our lowest point that set us on a course of radical self-improvement — provided we find the strength to survive them, as our very own Jase can testify. Ep 881880: Ian Bremmer | Dealing with a World In Disarray
The Power of Crisis author Ian Bremmer rejoins us to assess the top threats facing our world today and the difficult choices they may force us to make. What We Discuss with Ian Bremmer: The effective unified Western response to Ukrainian invasion has transformed Russia from a would-be China into a massive Iran. China's Xi Jinping has been concentrating his power — which will allow him to make bigger mistakes that affect billions of people even more quickly. The unchecked proliferation of AI can move markets and effortlessly generate mountains of disinformation on social media to further the agendas of extremists. The growing partisan polarization of the American electorate continues to erode the legitimacy of core federal institutions and the peaceful transfer of power through free and fair elections. While the consequences of water scarcity will worsen, unprepared governments' ability to handle them seems unlikely to improve. And much more... Ep 879879: Kevin Dutton | Are You a Psychopath (And Is That So Terrible)?
The Wisdom of Psychopaths author Kevin Dutton rejoins us to discuss how we can tell if we're psychopaths and why it might not be such a bad thing. What We Discuss with Kevin Dutton: What's the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath? Society focuses on the negative qualities of psychopathy. But what are the upsides? What career niches do psychopaths tend toward (and which ones should they avoid)? Can children be psychopaths? How can you tell if you're a psychopath? Ep 878878: Body Language | Skeptical Sunday
Can we accurately read someone's body language to gain access to their innermost thoughts? Andrew Gold joins us on this Skeptical Sunday to find out! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Body language research has found that indicators of deception may include eye movements, blinking, posture shifts, and word choice, but these cues can vary widely and require careful consideration. Body language can be influenced by various factors, making it challenging to precisely interpret. The use of body language by experts like the FBI involves observing consistent patterns in a suspect's behavior over time. While body language offers insights, it is not foolproof, and understanding context and individual differences is crucial for accurate interpretation. The case of Amanda Knox — exonerated after spending four years in Italian custody — highlights the dangers of relying solely on body language as evidence of guilt. Ep 876876: Kelly Richmond Pope | How Fraud Became a Trillion-Dollar Industry
Fool Me Once author Kelly Richmond Pope explains how fraud became a trillion-dollar industry and helps us avoid becoming its latest victims. What We Discuss with Kelly Richmond Pope: What types of people commit fraud, and what — beyond simple greed — tends to motivate them? What is the fraud triangle, and how does it explain the factors that contribute to the occurrence of occupational fraud or white-collar crime? Why fraud seems more common and more severe these days than ever before. The multifarious faces of fraud, the criminals that perpetrate them, and their typical marks. Ep 875875: Jonathan Kennedy | How Pathogens Have Shaped Our World
Pathogenesis: A History of the World in Eight Plagues author Jonathan Kennedy joins us to discuss how microscopic pathogens have shaped our world. What We Discuss with Jonathan Kennedy: If we were to weigh all the bacteria on Earth, their mass would be about 1,000 times more than all humans. If all of the viruses on the planet were laid end to end, they would stretch for 100 million light years. About eight percent of the human genome's DNA comes from retroviral infections we've endured over our evolution. From them, we've inherited memory and the ability to give birth to live young. Our gut microbiota communicates with our brains and can directly affect our mood and influence our behavior. We modern humans have our ancestors' romantic soirees with Neanderthals to thank for genetic defenses against countless viral diseases. How the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture was a double-edged sword that brought us innovative progress and population-decimating pandemics. And much more... Ep 874874: Ayurveda | Skeptical Sunday
Is there scientific legitimacy to the ancient Indian medicinal practice of Ayurveda? Dave Farina joins us on this Skeptical Sunday to find out! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medicinal practice based on balancing doshas (life forces) and natural therapies like diet, yoga, and meditation. The belief in ancient wisdom's superiority to modern medicine and the allure of nature attract some people — especially those with anti-pharmaceutical sentiments — to Ayurveda. The marketing and commercialization of Ayurvedic products and treatments contribute to its multi-billion dollar industry. Ayurveda's emphasis on "detoxing" and "toxins" is based on misused terminology and misconceptions. Critics argue that Ayurveda's reliance on outdated concepts and lack of scientific evidence makes it ineffective and potentially dangerous. Despite the criticism, Ayurveda continues to be popular globally, with many proponents advocating its holistic approach to health. Integrative medicine seeks to combine Ayurveda and other alternative practices with evidence-based modern medicine, though this remains controversial. Ep 872872: Paul Hutchinson | Beyond the Politics of "Sound of Freedom"
Sound of Freedom executive producer Paul Hutchinson joins us for a politics-free conversation about the horrible truth behind modern child trafficking. What We Discuss with Paul Hutchinson: How did successful investor Paul Hutchinson get personally involved in undercover work to rescue victims of child trafficking? How does someone working undercover to bust child traffickers gain the trust of the world's worst people without losing themselves along the way? How do sting operations navigate international and local laws to rescue children being trafficked and bring their abductors to justice? How does someone heading a rescue effort even begin to pick up the trail of criminals that will lead them to the traffickers and their victims? How can we, as concerned adults and parents, take a pre-emptive approach to protecting children from traffickers? And much more... Ep 871871: Julian Walker | How Conspiracy Theories Make Society Sick
Conspirituality co-author Julian Walker joins us to discuss how influencers have curdled New Age spirituality and wellness with the politics of paranoia. What We Discuss with Julian Walker: Why have so many wellness influencers gone off the conspiracy deep end since COVID began? What do these conspiracies have in common, and who benefits from their proliferation? How do otherwise reasonable people get sucked down conspiracy rabbit holes? How "The female-dominated New Age (with its positive focus on self) and the male-dominated realm of conspiracy theory (with its negative focus on global politics)" has synthesized into a hybrid system of belief dubbed "Conspirituality" by sociologists Charlotte Ward and David Voas. Why a privately owned platform's refusal to host and perpetuate the views of disinformation peddlers isn't censorship or a violation of free speech. And much more... Ep 870870: Personality Tests | Skeptical Sunday
Are personality tests valuable tools based on science, or just horoscopes in a lab coat? Comedian Michael Regilio joins us for Skeptical Sunday to find out! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Personality tests, like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, are widely used by individuals and organizations as a way to understand who we are and how we interact with one another. But how accurate are they? The Myers-Briggs test was developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers — neither of whom were scientists or psychologists. Companies use personality tests in hiring practices, potentially leading to discrimination and exclusion of qualified candidates. The Big 5 (5-Factor Model) is a more accurate alternative, but even it assumes personality traits remain relatively static over time. Psychologists and researchers should continue studying personality and behavior to develop more accurate and fair assessment tools that can better predict job performance and workplace success, but we should take the results of current personality tests with a grain of salt. Ep 867867: Rory Stewart | Walking Across Afghanistan and Iran
GiveDirectly President Rory Stewart talks about "mad" politics, long walks in warzones, and ensuring our charitable donations actually aid people in need. What We Discuss with Rory Stewart: What makes the UK's system of government "slightly mad" (even when compared to that of the US)? How the kind of skills that get someone elected as a politician can get in the way of governing well. How did Rory survive a walk across post-9/11 Afghanistan — just weeks after the fall of the Taliban, in the middle of winter, during a war, stalked by hungry wolves — despite being "guaranteed" it would mean certain death? What it was like to be one of the first people to see the ruins of a once-thriving city since Genghis Khan had destroyed it over 800 years before. How we can ensure that every penny of our charitable donations to developing places like Afghanistan and Kenya helps the people who really need it instead of stuffing the pockets of warlords, corrupt officials, and middlemen. Ep 866866: Astrology | Skeptical Sunday
Do zodiac signs dictate demeanors and destinies, or are horoscopes hogwash? Dave Farina consults the stars about astrology with us here on Skeptical Sunday! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: The pseudoscience of astrology (not to be confused with astronomy — the legitimate study of space) purports that the position of celestial bodies relative to Earth influences events and human behavior. Initially designed as calendrical systems for predicting seasonal shifts and divining the will of the gods, astrology has been observed across cultures since at least the second millennium BC. From a scientific standpoint, astrology lacks a coherent explanation and fails to make statistically significant predictions. Ep 865865: Can Relationship Live on If China Takes Taiwan? | Feedback Friday
How can you convince your politically active girlfriend to flee with you to safety should China ever invade Taiwan? Welcome to Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at [email protected]. Now let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: You moved to Taiwan to be with your politically active girlfriend, but the threat of Chinese invasion always looms large. She's made it clear that she wants to stay and help resist should this ever come to pass, but how can you convince her to flee with you to safety and fight from afar instead? Should a rekindled old flame's dedication to an MLM "company" be a deal-breaker? He insists it's not a scam! Because you don't have the financial capacity or mental bandwidth to indefinitely support your brother — who struggles with severe depression, anxiety, and self-harm — you need him to step up and take responsibility for his own life. How do you make him understand? Your fiancée is so insecure about her appearance that she wants to skip a friend's wedding so she won't ruin the pictures, and has suggested hiring an actress to stand in for her at your wedding! What can you do to get her to see herself as the extremely smart, beautiful, kind, and overall amazing person that you fell in love with? You're a high school student with a dream to study abroad. How do you get over the fear of asking your parents for permission and the chance they might deny you this dream? Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share with us? Ep 864864: Caroline Rose | Captagon and the New Age of Narco-Diplomacy
New Lines Institute's Caroline Rose explains how captagon, a drug you may have never heard of, is propping up genocidal regimes in the Middle East. What We Discuss with Caroline Rose: What is captagon? Where did it originate, what are its effects, and why don't we hear about it in the United States? How captagon — with a potential trade value of over $5.7 billion annually — has transformed Assad's Syria into a Mediterranean narco-state. Who uses captagon on such a massive scale, and how is it manufactured and smuggled across borders? Why is Syria allowed a seat at INTERPOL, the organization established to reign in international crime — like the captagon trade? What can be done to stem the tide of captagon and prevent it from expanding its range and influence even further? And much more... Ep 863863: Juan Zarate | Waging Financial War on Rogue Regimes
Treasury's War author Juan Zarate joins us to discuss how the US wields its financial power against terrorism, rogue states, and global crime syndicates. What We Discuss with Juan Zarate: Why the Treasury Department became part of the intelligence apparatus of the United States post-9/11 — after resisting such integration for years. Sanctions: what are they good for and how do they work? How and why criminals (whether they're of the independent, organized, or state-sponsored variety) need banks and financial institutions for any major crime to succeed. What the SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications) system is and how it's used to disrupt terrorist financing around the world. Ep 862862: Targeted Ads | Skeptical Sunday
Do personalized ads enhance our online experience or intolerably invade our privacy? Andrew Gold joins us on this Skeptical Sunday to uncover the truth! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: Personalized advertising relies on algorithms that collect and analyze user data to tailor ads to individual preferences. While personalized ads can be effective in engaging users and providing relevant content, they raise concerns about privacy invasion and potential manipulation. Voice-activated devices like Amazon's Alexa and Apple's Siri are designed to listen for wake-up words, but there have been instances of accidental recordings and privacy breaches. The use of personal data in advertising can lead to discrimination and perpetuate existing inequalities. Stakeholders including tech companies, advertisers, regulators, and users have roles to play in ensuring ethical and privacy-respecting practices in personalized advertising. Users can — and should — take steps to protect their privacy and advocate for stronger privacy protections. Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. At 35, how do you disclose your virginity on a date that might lead to sex without ensuring the continuation of said virginity? Welcome to Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! You're 35 and you've never had sex. How do you disclose your virginity during courtship with a potential partner without scaring them off and ensuring the continuation of this unfortunate trend? Should you maintain a friendship with your college buddies whose partners alienate your wife? They acknowledge the issue but don't seem to care. You support your daughter's use of therapy, but you wonder if maybe weekly appointments, emergency sessions, and direct access to her therapist might be bordering on excessive. Can therapy be addictive? [Thanks to clinical psychologist Dr. Erin Margolis for helping us with this one!] Your ex-wife endured you at your worst, and you'd like to help her financially now that you're successful on multiple fronts. Is this appropriate, or should you consider doing so anonymously? After working through the pandemic as a registered nurse pulling 10-12 hour shifts seven days a week, you're finding it difficult to reintegrate into a society that feels like it's moved on and left you behind. Ep 860860: Mitchell Prothero | Cocaine, Murder, and Dirty Money in Europe
Project Brazen's Mitchell Prothero reveals Europe’s cocaine crisis through the stories of cartel thugs, cops, journalists, and victims caught in the middle. What We Discuss with Mitchell Prothero: Why European law enforcement is ill-prepared to deal with the influx of crime and violence associated with a cocaine trade that has grown to rival that of the US. How European ports that have been historically instrumental in the development of international trade have become thriving modern hubs for drug trafficking. What makes cocaine the "perfect" drug for illicit entrepreneurs who want to make a lot of money on their own terms? Why loose cannon drug trafficker and murderer Ridouan Taghi makes fellow criminals as nervous as he makes journalists, agents of law enforcement, and European society. What needs to change in order for the European cocaine trade to decelerate? And much more... Ep 859859: Bradley Schurman | Demographic Collapse in Russia, China, & the US
Demographic futurist Bradley Schurman joins us to explore a future where over-65s outnumber under-18s — and the changes society will have to face. What We Discuss with Bradley Schurman: In the not-too-distant future, a staggering shift looms over the developed world: at least 20 percent of national populations will surpass 65 years of age, outnumbering those 18 years of age and younger. Termed the Super Age by Bradley Schurman, this demographic transformation carries immense potential for growth or, conversely, risks leaving many behind. Take Russia, for instance, where this trend unfolds amidst geopolitical turmoil and a high military mortality rate — 25 times that of Chechnya and 35 times Afghanistan's monthly casualties. Failure to prepare for these impending changes would usher economic stagnation, increased isolation for vulnerable communities, and hastened decline of rural areas. Yet, there is reason for optimism. By proactively planning, we can unlock the advantages of the Super Age: prolonged and healthier lives, enhanced intergenerational collaboration in workplaces and households, and unexplored markets and innovations. Ep 858858: Fast Fashion | Skeptical Sunday
We delve into the drawbacks of fast fashion while highlighting the benefits of mindful wardrobe choices on this Skeptical Sunday with Michael Regilio! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: Even under normal circumstances, the fashion industry is a major contributor to carbon emissions, water pollution, and waste, with clothes often ending up in landfills. What is so-called "fast fashion," and how does it create a constant cycle of trends and clothing turnover, leading to excessive waste and environmental damage? Donating clothes is not always a sustainable solution, as many donated items end up in landfills or have a negative impact on local textile industries in developing countries. The fashion industry relies on cheap labor and often exploits workers — particularly women — in factories with poor working conditions and low wages. How do we help tip the scale in a more sustainable direction? We can support eco-conscious designers, clothing recycling, and rental services while buying quality items and reducing washing loads. Ep 857857: Forever on the Lam from a Blackmailing Scam? | Feedback Friday
Should you worry that a blackmailer tipped you off to the FBI 10 years ago and it's been waiting to nab you at the border? Welcome to Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: PSA: Listeners using Stitcher should be aware that the service is going the way of the dodo soon. Recommended alternatives: Podcast Addict (Android) or Overcast (iOS). Could a drunken chat room indiscretion with an allegedly underage blackmail scammer from 10 years ago lead to an arrest when you try to cross an international border for the first time since the incident? [Thanks to attorney Corbin Payne for helping us with yet another sticky situation!] A recent pregnancy scare illuminated your significant other's dependence on their family's advice over their own faculties for critical thinking, and it's got you wondering if such a relationship could — or should — have much of a future. You recently discovered that your father has a second family — for which he provides a luxurious life while telling your disabled mother to support you and your siblings as a street vendor. Now you're wondering if you can truly live peacefully with him until you're old enough to leave home? Is merging accounts with your significant other — whose financial shortcomings always seem to fall in your lap — a prudent step in the right direction for easier money management? Some listener feedback is shared regarding the disheartened, defamed fellow from episode 840, and we get a bombshell of an update from the woman in episode 679 whose boyfriend didn't want her to meet his mom because she's allegedly a huge racist. Ian Urbina is a journalist, the director of The Outlaw Ocean Project, and the author of The Outlaw Ocean: Journeys Across the Last Untamed Frontier. What We Discuss with Ian Urbina: What makes the ocean the Earth's final untamed frontier? Who has jurisdiction to enforce laws in international waters? For that matter, what are the laws, and who makes them? How does slavery persist on the open ocean? Who is most vulnerable to finding themselves enslaved, and who is profiting from their misery? What percentage of the fishing that supplies Western cities with delicious seafood is illegal? What can we do to ensure we're not supporting high crimes on the high seas? And much more... Ep 854854: Fireworks | Skeptical Sunday
Fireworks cause pollution and health risks while disturbing veterans and pets. On this Skeptical Sunday with David C. Smalley, can we find alternatives? Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and comedian and podcast host David C. Smalley break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Studies have shown that fireworks have negative effects on human health and the environment as they release toxic metals and contribute to air and water pollution. The noise from fireworks can be extremely distressing for combat veterans, individuals with PTSD, and pets, leading to anxiety, panic attacks, and even running away. Fireworks-related fires cause significant property damage and pose a risk to both people and wildlife. Fireworks regulations are fragmented and challenging to enforce, and there are political and monetary pushbacks against stricter regulations thanks to moneyed interests (like fireworks manufacturers) lobbying lawmakers. One 21st-century solution to overcome these negatives is the use of drones for aerial displays, which are quieter, more environmentally friendly, and can still provide a visually stunning experience. [Thanks to Brad Watts, a licensed professional counselor and the author of Sibling Sexual Abuse: A Guide for Confronting America’s Silent Epidemic for helping us sort this one out!] You worry that your significant other's "close" coworker is trying to get a bit too close, and their dynamic seems tantamount to an emotional affair. He insists on maintaining this friendship in spite of how uncomfortable it makes you feel. Are you overreacting, or are your concerns perfectly reasonable? What should you do? How do you communicate your disinterest in the boring stories your significant other constantly shares about people you don't even know in a way that won't be hurtful or offensive? How does a stay-at-home dad on military disability who used his downtime to hone his education and skill set explain his unorthodox break in employment as a feature — not a bug — to prospective employers? Ep 850850: Self-Help Cults | Skeptical Sunday
Striving to better yourself is a noble pursuit, and there are plenty of legitimate resources to help you navigate this journey. But how do you protect yourself against the unscrupulous shysters lurking in the shadows looking to exploit you at this vulnerable juncture? Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and fact-checker, comedian, and podcast host David C. Smalley break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: Globally, the self-help industry brings in nearly $60 billion per year. But how much of this is generated by programs that actually help people better themselves? Under the surface, many so-called self-help groups are nothing more than cults that use coercive tactics — or even abuse — to keep their "customers" in line. These groups cultivate dependency among the flock while escalating the price of admission. A healthy dose of skepticism and genuine connection with the outside world will help guard against such exploitation. Therapy, research, and self-guided approaches are better bets for promoting genuine well-being. Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Ep 849849: Whose Story to Pick When the Charge Is Sick? | Feedback Friday
Should you believe without question that the mild-mannered cousin you've known your whole life is a rapist, as your friend alleges, or should you take into consideration that this friend's past lapses in credibility may cast a shadow of doubt over this narrative? We'll try to find answers to this and more here on Feedback Friday! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Is it Jordan answering your comments on social media, or is it an AI chatbot? Beep? Boop? Bop? A friend's rape allegation against your cousin has you weighing the latter's mild-mannered reputation against the former's sometimes questionable credibility. How can you achieve financial and emotional independence from an abusive father while maintaining relationships with the family members who still live with him? What can you do to help your brother untangle himself from an unhinged ex who seems capable of committing acts of extreme retribution — against him and his family — if he does anything to displease her? Is there a professional way to tell a client they either need to up their hygiene game or lower their fragrance game because your olfactory senses go haywire whenever they're within smelling distance? Ep 848848: Yuval Noah Harari | Peering into the Future of Humanity
Yuval Noah Harari (@harari_yuval) is a historian and the bestselling author of Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow, and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century. His latest book, Unstoppable Us, Volume 1: How Humans Took Over the World, is out now. What We Discuss with Yuval Noah Harari: At a time when information is unlimited, has the idea that "knowledge is power" become obsolete? It all depends on how careful we are about ingesting the right kind of information — and knowing which kind to avoid. Religious texts and nation-defining constitutions are only as useful as their human interpretations — which can shift radically over the course of generations. In what ways might technology like artificial intelligence and genetic engineering threaten a humanist-centered approach to the future? How algorithms that guess new ways to sell us things we don't need can be modified to put us on the hit lists of authoritarian governments. What humanity really needs to do in order to avert climate crisis and World War III. And much more... Award-winning journalist and podcaster Andrew Gold joins us for this edition of Skeptical Sunday to examine the spread of conspiracy theories linking 5G technology to COVID-19 and debunk these claims with actual science. On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: 5G is the latest generation of wireless technology that offers significantly faster data speeds, lower latency, and increased network capacity — leading to enhanced connectivity and improved efficiency in our daily lives. Conspiracy theories linking 5G to COVID-19 have gained significant attention and, like the virus itself, spread across the world — helped by Russian state-backed media outlet RT. Misinformation and conspiracy theories tend to exploit newsworthy events to further ulterior agendas. Conspiracy theorists often seek comfort and certainty during uncertain times, leading to the popularity of such theories. The good news: there is no credible evidence or scientific basis supporting the idea that 5G radiation depletes the immune system or spreads COVID-19. Your fiancée's ongoing involvement with a "business" contact feels a lot like an emotional affair — something you endured in a past relationship and aren't eager to repeat. How do you address this before trust in your betrothed has irrevocably eroded? How do you help your mother move on from the death of your father when she's vehemently opposed to the idea of therapy? What We Discuss with Elie Honig: How the rich and powerful exploit flaws in the justice system to evade accountability while being able to afford lengthy trials and secure better plea deals. Why using wiretaps and flipping complicit parties are essential tactics for gathering evidence against the people at the top. How intermediaries are used to shield the rich and powerful from being held responsible for crimes committed in their name. After suffering a brain injury in a terrible car accident, many aspects of your personality have changed — including a fresh perspective about how your dysfunctional family and the religious cult in which you were raised have been neglectful and abusive. How should the "new" you face the future? You've been waiting for nearly a decade to exit an unhappy marriage until your youngest kid turns 18, which will happen soon. Unfortunately, you and your spouse work in a full-time religious ministry, and divorce will mean dismissal, loss of income, disappointing the family and community, and surfacing of past transgressions you'd rather not revisit. The common misbeliefs and flawed mindsets around fitness and weight loss perpetuated by a wellness industry that prioritizes its profits over the people it purports to help. How the wellness industry inflates bogus "sciencey" claims in order to fool us into buying routines, diets, and supplements that, at best, do nothing for us. How do you maintain your own patience, empathy, and mental well-being while providing support for your difficult, negative grandmother who isn't quite ready to accept an assisted-living situation? How should you handle inappropriate comments from a mentor/friend that triggered past trauma related to your father?
