The Great Canadian Bumblebee Count Canada’s Wild Native Bees Are In Trouble – Can You Help?
Take part in Friends of the Earth’s Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count from August 1 to September 15, 2017. Our downloadable Bumble Bee Census Card for Eastern or Western Canada will get you off to a buzzing start. And each submission before September 16 gives you one chance at a great prize from our friends at the Sustainable Outdoors Co.Just like governments need a census to know what’s happening with its citizens, as well as their homes, families and jobs, we think bumble bees need their own census. Not enough is known about wild, native bees in Canada, and what scientists do know is worrying. By taking part, you’ll learn about over 40 species of Canada’s bumble bees and ways you can help them.By acting together to save the bees and other pollinators, we can make a difference for our food security, for wildlife and, overall, to protect biodiversity. A Cross Country Bike Trip Raising Funds For Urban Youths In Under Resourced Communities
As part of a cycling journey across Canada, Former Queen’s University football star, Curtis Carmichael, will be taking off from Vancouver. Curtis is cycling across the country, as part of a 3,300 km journey, and is seeking donations in support of urban youth that are growing up in under-resourced communities. Curtis’ stated goal is to raise more than $150,000 as part of his tour, which starts Monday, July 10th in Vancouver, BC, and is scheduled to conclude Saturday, August 12th, in Halifax, NS. A former CFL prospect, Curtis grew up in community housing in Toronto, eventually realizing his dreams and playing Wide Receiver on a partial athletic and partial academic scholarship for Queen’s University in the CIS. As part of that team, he won prestigious the Russ Jackson Award, which is presented annually to the football player in Canada best exemplifying the attributes of academic achievement, football skill and citizenship. After college, he passed on the opportunity to play professionally and is now studying to become a teacher to serve marginalized communities. As part of the trip, he hopes to speak with thousands of Canadians about his experiences living in government housing, and looking to impress upon them the importance of society’s long-term relational investment in the lives of children and youth. The Prime Minister Should Not Be Choosing The Governor General
This week, as part of its Democratic Head Campaign, Democracy Watch called on Prime Minister Trudeau to democratize and Canadianize the choice of the next Governor General. Like all the other Officers of Parliament, the Governor General (GG) must be independent of the Prime Minister because s/he makes many key decisions about the operations of Parliament and the government, and so the Prime Minister should not be choosing the GG alone as that taints the position with partisanship.
