Wall Street Insane! EP05: Omid wrote a 10 pages letter just to quit James! The Rise and Fall of The StockPickr
You know, back in our hedge fund trading days, it was so stressful that Dan and I seriously thought about pivoting to selling Diet Pill on Television! after failing 9 of the other ideas, we eventually started StockPickr, which was eventually acquired by Thestreet.com. It is at that time, Omid wrote a 10-pages letter, and he quit me! We also talked about how we get connected to thestreet.com, how Jim Cramer crashed our website, how it was rebuilt and optimized, how Omid actually felt about the whole StockPickr and Thestreet.com's deal, and how I could never work in a corporate.Listen to the episode and tweet at me @jaltucher or Jay, the producer, @jay_yow to let us know if you like this episode!Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! How I created a 3 million subscribers' YouTube Channel with curiosity! - Evan Puschak
Nerdwriter's YouTube channel has helped me through the lockdown. I especially enjoy the video where he breaks down Louis C.K.'s joke about playing monopoly with his daughter, and how his daughter learned a valuable adult lesson from the game! I have watched that video over and over, more than 10 times! In this episode, I am fortunate enough to have the creator of Nerdwriter, Evan Puschak, an American video essayist, and journalist on to talk about his new book, Escape into Meaning: Essays on Superman, Public Benches, and Other Obsessions! It's such a fascinating book! We broke down some of the videos from Nerdwriter, especially Louis C.K.'s video, Darth Vader, Jerry Seinfeld, and also How Donald Trump Answers a Question!! We also talked about what drove Evan to write this book, how he grow his YouTube channel, and what motivates him to keep creating content!Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! Will the US lose to China in the War!? with General Robert Spalding
This might be one of the most pessimist episodes that I have done! The China-Taiwan tension has been rising every day since The Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. The question is what is she doing there? Why is she there? What brought her to Taiwan? With all the questions that I have, I invited General Robert Spalding, retired United States Air Force brigadier general, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, this work focuses on U.S.-China relations, economic and national security, and the Asia-Pacific military balance, and basically asked him, will the US win if the war breaks out?We break down whether was it propaganda when the media says China is enraged at the US because Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. How much did China control? How much does the US rely on China in terms of Supply Chain? Could China have been sabotaging us all these years?Listen to the episode, and let us know what you think!Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! Gumroad has been around 11 years and more, and people have made tens of thousands of dollars selling digital products on Gumroad! But do you know, how Gumroad was founded? In this episode, the founder and CEO of Gumroad, Sahil Lavingia who also invested in Clubhouse, Republic, and more, joined me to talk about his origin story and his road to creating Gumroad!Sahil's origin story is fascinating, he was young and wanted to buy some Xbox games, so he started learning how to build websites to make money on the side. Adulting 101
I think there should be an Adulting 101 course out there! In this episode, my wife, Robyn, and I talked about why weren't some subject taught in high school. Like, as how to do laundry, how to take care or rent an apartment, how to cook for one person, and so on...Of course, Robyn has her own takes on those subjects! She thinks that parents should be the ones that teach the kids those skills as part of their parenting method! However, we both agree on high school should at least teach the kids about doing taxes, how to prepare for job interviews, and also teach basic probability and statistics! (A note from Jay the Engineer, we did learn those in our high school in Malaysia. Not taxes, but basic accounting.)Robyn and I also discuss how to have a healthy relationship with your spouse, and how having unique skills and/ or unique experiences can win you in life!Listen to the episode, and if you like episodes like these, make sure you give it a like, tweet at me @jaltucher, and leave a review!Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! Wall Street Insane! EP04: I was so miserable, I just want to get out...
During my trading time, it was so miserable, I just wanted to get out! However, something kept me in the game during that time! In this episode, Dan Kelly, my business partner, Omid Malekan, and I realized we had so many insane stories because we have zero pedigree, and we came from a non-traditional background. We also talked about how Victor Niederhoffer, an American hedge fund manager, champion squash player, bestselling author, and statistician sort of putting us on the path, and how we ended things because of my writing! This episode also includes how I was miserable, I wanted to get out, the oil trade that Omid did back in 2008 during the pricing collapse, how we unintentionally got someone else fired, and how we made deal with thestreet.com.Listen to the episode and tweet at me @jaltucher or Jay, the producer, @jay_yow to let us know if you like this episode!Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! What really caused the Inflation and the use cases of cryptocurrencies with Tascha
Tascha, a macroeconomist and technology investor gave a great explanation of the outlook of the economy right now. She gave a bird's eye view of what caused the inflation and the "mild" recession, how long will that last, and what was her prediction for the future. On top of that, she explains web3 infrastructure to me, and breakdown how could crypto tokens and NFTs could be utilized, and she also breaks down some of the use cases for cryptocurrencies as well.If the episode (830) with Omid Malekan, educates you on what actually are cryptocurrencies, this episode with Tascha will be the one that educates you on the future and outlook of cryptocurrencies from a macroeconomist point-of-view.Visit Taschalabs.com to learn more about Tascha's work. Also, make sure to check out Episode 830 with Omid Malekan.Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! Julia Cameron gave me permission to Skip The Line (Re-Release)
What is going on with the world in the past 3 years, especially the past few weeks? There is news about inflation, the economy, and reports of big tech companies planning to lay off their employees. With the uncertainties looming, we need something to take our minds off the news and calm our anxiety. I remember the podcast that I did with Julia Cameron, an American teacher, artist, poet, playwright, novelist, filmmaker, composer, journalist, and most of all, the author of "The Artist Way".In the episode, Julia talked about her morning pages, we discussed the 10,000 hours rules, and how can we use all the practices to help our creativity juice flow. Eventually, the episode led me into writing, Skip The Line, and then created the idea list website, notepd.com.Listen to the episode, I hope the conversation with Julia in this episode helps you as it helped me.If you want to see an example of what Notepd's list looks like, check out my post here: https://notepd.com/idea/the-ultimate-guide-to-becoming-an-idea-machine-317Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! How to beat someone who's better and more equipped than you? with Wally Green
After sharing his origin story, how he went from being in a gang to the rising table tennis star. Wally Green, pro athlete and co-founder of Spin NY, taught me how to get into your opponent's mind, and win the mind game. He also shares that being forced into the corner during a game actually fires him up, and he also loves the feeling of beating someone who has had everything in life in terms of training, support systems, and money, while he has nothing to lose is the best feeling ever. That inspires him, and motivates him every day! Wally also shares some tips on how to grow his TikTok and Instagram! The Villain's Journey of the Criminal Mastermind, Paul Le Roux with Evan Ratliff
How does one become a criminal mastermind? How does one turn into a villain? In this episode, I was joined by Evan Ratliff, an American journalist, and author, to talk about his book, The Mastermind, A True Story of Murder, Empire, and a New Kind of Crime Lord. What is fascinating about his book, and his reporting is that Paul Le Roux, is like the criminal and crime lord equivalent of Elon Musk, where he is tech savvy, and well-versed in technology, and engineering! And at the same time, he also fits into the "Villini's Journey Arc", where he was a genuine and kind-hearted guy, but due to some obstacles, he turned 180 and started falling into the path of the villain! At some point, Paul Le Roux also mentioned that he wanted to be the biggest criminal out there.Listen to the episode and find out more!Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! Kitboga: I scam the scammers and they yelled at me!
Aren't you tired of all the robocalls? All the phone calls that claimed to be from IRS, student loan forgiveness, and especially those about the extended car warranty? In 2021, there are 59.4 million Americans have lost money to scam callers and lost a total amount of roughly $29.8 billion! Naturally, Jay The Producer also got the scam call claiming to be from Student Loan Forgiveness Program and the Extended Car Warranty Program (even though he did not own a car!) So much that he got frustrated and he called up Kitboga, an American Twitch streamer, and YouTuber whose content primarily focuses on scam baiting against scams conducted over the phone, and arguably one of the real-life superheroes, and invited him onto the podcast to talk about his origin story, the type of scam that's out there, how he bait the scammer into spending more time with him!In one of the scambaiting stories, he even has an on-again and off-again relationship with "President Joe Biden"! One of my favorite quotes from this episode is when Kitboga said, "An extra hour that I spend on the phone with the scammer, is an extra hour that this scammer not have spamming other people."Check out his website here: https://kitboga.com/Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! Wall Street Insane! EP03: Betrayal of the decade!
Another episode of Wall Street Insane! This is probably one of the most stressful stories that I have told. Imagine a company just got offered 40 Million Dollars, MILLION, and the owner refused to sell it because he wanted to "grow and scale" the company. I told everyone this if someone offers you more than 100% of what your company is worth, take it!Dan Kelly, my business partner, Omid Malekan, and I also talked about the betrayal of the decade! The first betrayal that I have seen in my life on how money changes people's attitudes and breaks a 20-year-old friendship after obtaining a large amount of money, literally within days!We also talked about all the stressful things that I had to do, to make sure the deal close!Listen to the episode and tweet at me @jaltucher or Jay, the producer, @jay_yow to let us know if you like this episode!Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! Supply chain, inflation, recession, is everything collapsing? with Jim Rickards
Are you a pessimist or an optimist towards the state and the economy of the world? Do you think we are finally at the bottom, and we are slowly climbing back up? Or do you think the worst had yet to come? In this episode, I had a conversation/ mild debate with Jim Rickards, an American lawyer, economist, investment banker, speaker, media commentator, and author on matters of finance and precious metals about the state of the economy right now. We talked about what is the Fed doing about inflation, what causes inflation, and we talked about the supply chain issue, and when did the supply chain issue start? Did it really start with the Russian-Ukraine war? The Lockdown? Or did it actually start with the trade war back in 2019? Also, how does the physical supply chain works? JeVon McCormick: Don't be common, be the modern leader instead.
JeVon McCormick has an unusual upbringing. Who gave him his first business advice? It was When he was nine years old, from his dad, who was a pimp!In this episode, JeVon McCormick, an American author, President, and CEO of Scribe Media told me his origin story, where he was working for his dad (a pimp), collecting money from prostitutes, did not go to college, and he rose up to be an extremely successful entrepreneur, and eventually became the CEO of Scribe Media, which was an excellent publishing company, and his new book, The Modern Leader. We also talked about what he had seen socially, learned as an entrepreneur, his biggest regrets, what he thinks about the state of the world should be, and what should do to make sure we have a better tomorrow.Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! How to write a military thriller with Brandon Webb and John David Mann
People always put you in a box when you have become successful in "the" one field and one genre. Sometimes, when people do try something new, that didn't usually work out for them. However, this is not what happened to Brandon Webb, a former United States Navy SEAL, SEAL Sniper course Head Instructor, and author, and John David Mann, an award-winning author. They both went on from being successful in writing non-fiction to, now thriller novel writers that not just have one book, but a sequel to the previous book as well, Cold Fear. So, naturally, I have to have both of them on, to ask them, how did they do it? How did they transition from writing non-fiction to writing a thriller, and also, how to write a thriller novel?Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! Who Are You: Brian Lawlor defied drug addiction, stripped search, and now Back to Music!
Over the years, I have interviewed hundreds of guests that came on to promote their books or promote their self-help habits. Now, the series, Who Are You, is an experimental series where I just interview strangers, people that I never met before, (or maybe my producer, Jay has met and recommended.) to get them to tell their stories, their downfall, their recovery, their hero's journey! In this episode, I have on Brian Lawlor, a New Jersey-born musician, who was addicted to drugs when he was younger while still able to function. He told the stories where he got addicted, he was arrested, stripped search, tried really hard to get off drugs, but kept giving excuses and going back for it. He also told me about his bizarre adventure in China where he almost got detained!Listen to this episode, and tweet at me @jaltucher and Jay @jay_yow07 if you like this series, and if you or you know someone with interesting stories! If you like this series, please leave a review, likes, and subscribes on any podcast player of your choosing!Follow Brian's journey on Instagram and Bandcamp:IG: @brianlawloredSpotify: Brian LawlorBandcamp: BrianLawlor.bandcamp.comhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usiTyS5bmtwVisit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out!
