In this episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD, is joined by Vince and Krystina Shirey to discuss the many blended family issues they faced when they got married and combined their families. They also talk about how they learned to let go of expectations in order to have a happier marriage. A pervasive challenge faced by couples when blending a family concerns the delicate balance between prioritizing the children's needs and wellbeing versus prioritizing one another in the marriage. Unfortunately, societal norms and unconscious biases are unhelpful when navigating all the important considerations. The truth is, in a successful marriage with children, it's not either-or and it's key to aim for a harmonious balance. It is crucial to prioritize the marriage while also maintaining a strong bond with the children, which is an inherently lifelong commitment. 118. Intention And Love Language Keep Romance Alive | feat. Kaylee and Justin Poulet
In this episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD, chats with Kaylee and Justin Poulet about keeping the romance in your marriage alive through intention and using Love Languages. In addition to his knowledge and ambition, I recognized Justin's incredibly intentional support for his wife as a real asset to his marriage. For context, we met in Arizona at a conference, and there was a massive snow storm back in his hometown. This made the situation back home somewhat difficult on his wife, Kaylee, who was managing the kids and household on her own. After we got to talking about Justin's intentional actions to support and connect with Kaylee from afar, I learned just how growth oriented and aware Justin is as a husband. I knew I had to have this couple on the show. I see Justin and Kaylee as true role models: role models for other couples, role models for their children to see what marriage can be like, and I hope, today, they are role models for you too. In this episode of The Intimate Marriage Podcast, host Alexandra Stockwell, MD discusses the ways you can connect with your partner if frequent business trips keep you apart. This can be difficult on both sides – for the person who's at home (oftentimes managing the day-to-day household and kids on their own) and also for the person traveling–who's focused on their work project and being present in their job. This episode will offer you useful advice that both you and your partner can use before the scheduled travel, during the trip, and once you or your partner returns home from a trip. Also in this episode: Why I've found it's more challenging for the person at home than for the person traveling How you can support your partner at home while you're traveling Tips on how to stay connected for both the one traveling and for the one at home Why existing relationship complications are exasperated by someone being away FREE 3-Day Make Your Valentine's Day Special Course: Alexandrastockwell.com/valentines Sign up for the next Uncompromising Intimacy Workshop: https://www.alexandrastockwell.com/workshop/ Subscribe To The Podcast: Apple Podcast | YouTube | Spotify Connect With The Show: Website | Linkedin | Instagram If you're ready to create the deliciousness and joy of a growth-oriented, passionate relationship, visit: www.alexandrastockwell.com If you're ready for your relationship to feel as good on the inside as it looks on the outside, get started with the FREE first chapter from Alexandra's acclaimed bestselling book "Uncompromising Intimacy" HERE Purchase a FULL copy of "Uncompromising Intimacy" HERE About Alexandra Stockwell, MD Her mission is to change the cultural narrative around long-term relationships from one of ongoing stagnation and compromise to the delectable joy and deep gratification a couple feels while building passion and excitement together, every day. 112. Can You Be Growth Oriented In Your Relationship While Also being Satisfied With Where You Are?
A recent coaching call with clients has inspired this episode. The woman in the couple is extremely committed to her personal growth through an extensive morning routine including meditation, journaling, and self-care every day. While not opposed digging into growth, her husband is a very ambitious entrepreneur who, after a hard day at work, desires to hang out with his wife in a lighter manner by focusing on the laughter, and fun moments the majority of the time. This creates an ongoing tension between the two of them because they believed having a growth-oriented relationship, and feeling satisfied and content, were mutually incompatible. In this episode, I discuss: How this couple can get into alignment with one another Is feeling content really the opposite of being deeply committed to personal growth? Why a desire does not imply dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs How to want more while being content with what you have As a relationship and intimacy coach, I always want you to be able to see how what you have is beautiful, while also believing it's worthwhile to create even more goodness and connection in your relationship. 111. Prioritizing Your Marriage Within A Successful Career: Featuring Insights From A LinkedIn Post By Marc Randolph, Co-Founder of Netflix
In this episode, I discuss a LinkedIn post by Marc Randolph, Co-Founder of Netflix, concerning how he chooses to prioritizes his marriage even while maintaining a wildly successful career. This post recently came up in my feed and it thrilled me to read about such a successful man, founder of numerous extremely robust companies, because he feels most proud of achieving his success while staying married to the same woman and being present as a father. To him, this is THE DEFINITION OF SUCCESS. What struck me after reading the post were the comments, many of which were negative reactions to what he'd shared. For a relatively sophisticated platform like LinkedIn, I was surprised to say the least. You'll learn today that spending time with your partner is not about the quantity, or even the frequency. It's about the quality of the time spent together and the commitment to doing so. 110. The Date Night Planner: Simple Tips And Intentions To Make Date Nights Unforgettable Again
Don't you sometimes wish you had a Date Night Planner? It would definitely come in handy. There are particular occasions in life that require a lot of thought and planning. If prom night is coming up, you know you want to figure out ahead of time what you'll be wearing. If it's your wedding day, you've likely spent months setting your intentions for the day—what you'll wear, where it will be, the flow of the day, the experience throughout the day, both for yourself and your guests. These are examples of occasions that you put a lot of thought and attention into in advance in order to set yourself up for success. But the truth is you don't have to save that approach for the big milestones. You can put care into and set intentions for all experiences in your life, both big and small. 108. Sexy Marriage Radio w/ Dr. Corey & Pam Allan
Dr. Corey and Pam Allan co-host the wonderful, informative, fun podcast called Sexy Marriage Radio, which he started 11 years ago! Their marriage and partnership exemplify many of the concepts I teach. I especially enjoy that they've come to it through very different training and life experiences than I have had–which makes our conversation all the more dynamic. In this episode you'll hear Dr. Corey and Pam discuss: Dr. Corey's inspiration for starting a podcast 11 years ago (which was way ahead of its time) The question Pam asks herself regularly as part of addressing any issues that arise in their marriage (and how she also applies this to motherhood and other relationships) How Dr. Corey and Pam's careers have evolved and led them to gradually begin working together as co-hosts How most people view the concept of what is "fair" …plus much more. 107. Say What You Really Want: Create Connection & Real Intimacy With Your Spouse (And Become A Better Leader While Doing It)
Identifying and expressing your desires is one of the most important aspects of real intimacy. However, I frequently see couples struggle with this–both with knowing what they want and also being able to say it to one another. Some people have no idea where to begin in order to figure out what they desire. Others know exactly what they want but don't know how to say it clearly, or they find it prohibitively uncomfortable to do so. And then some people don't know what they want nor how to say it. It can be helpful when your spouse asks you, "what do you want?" But that question has at least two different meanings, with two very different contexts. It's important to be able to distinguish between them. In one context the question is genuinely about you and your desires, and in the other it's about the question asker's needs in that moment. In this episode you'll learn: Two different contexts and meanings that become relevant when you're asked what you want and how to respond to each one Tactics to help you discover what you really want Why it's important to give yourself time to identify what you want, and then share it …plus much more. Since it's the beginning of a new year, I know you may be setting goals and intentions–doing so requires you to tap into your desires and navigate any blocks you have. I hope this episode helps you in achieving that. 105. Live Coaching: Polyamorous Woman Confronted by Partner's Desire for Monogamy
In this episode you'll hear me coach Jennifer Kaylo Ruscin, a polyamorous woman with a podcast focused on polyamory, swinging, and all things related. I was scheduled to be a guest on her show, The Jennifer Kaylo Ruscin Podcast, but instead of a typical interview I ended up giving her a coaching session instead!A week before we spoke, Jennifer faced a major challenge in her relationship. She told her partner that she was interested in dating a couple she knows. Her partner is typically ok with flirting and fun sexy socializing but he did not take well to this idea at all. He immediately rejected it and said he would move out rather than stand by her moving forward with this plan. Jennifer was faced with three choices: move forward without his permission, leave her partner, or dial down and disconnect from her desires. She chose the third option. That's where our conversation begins. In this unique episode you'll hear: How I coached Jennifer and reframed her views on compromise The ways Jennifer communicated her desire for polyamorous experiences to her partner My advice to Jennifer to communicate using curiosity and openness …plus much more. The way I coach Jennifer will show you how to feel more connection, more emotional intimacy, and more erotic gratification in your relationship, whether you are in a strictly monogamous relationship, or not. 104. The Power Of Authentic Connection With Serdar Hararovich
Today's podcast episode is different from every episode before because, for the first time ever, I'm interviewing someone about the power of authentic connection who is not currently in a committed relationship. But, I heard Serdar speak on a panel about masculine and feminine polarity teachings, and his views piqued my interest (plus I was captivated by his voice which you'll soon understand). Then shortly after that, I saw a post he did on how to have meaningful connected sex, and I knew we were aligned in our ways of thinking and that he would have a lot to offer that will enhance the intimacy in your life. Serdar is the epitome of self-reflection, living authentically, and constantly growing in connectedness and hearing his perspective as a single male is sure to inspire and nourish you. You'll hear us discuss: How the challenges in Serdar's upbringing left him with a strong yearning for connection How Serdar defines attachment trauma and how it relates to the way he coaches The ways in which Serdar's concept of connection has evolved over time Serdar's views on sex, intimacy, and connection and his guidance on how to have more fulfilling sex Serdar's personal growth journey is truly beautiful and I'm delighted for you to learn from such an enlightened man. It's that time of the year again; the holiday season is upon us. But do you actually find it to be the most wonderful time of the year??? If you want to create joy for your family, your marriage, and yourself this holiday season, you need the tools to do so. 102. When Your Partner Isn't Into Personal Growth
In my intimacy coaching business, over the years many women have reached out and expressed interest in working with me, while also sharing a lot of frustration because their husband "wasn't interested in doing the work." However, anytime one of those husbands chose to have a short conversation with me, it turned out that he definitely was interested in exploring coaching with me. I found this to be true 100% of the time! It used to confuse me, until I came to understand that people tend to project their own personal growth style onto their partner, and then find the partner lacking. These men, who were described by their wives as having no interest in personal growth and coaching, turned out to be quite interested and motivated. However, they were not interested in contorting themselves to fit the definition of "personal growth" assigned to them by their wives. In other words, they were not interested in neglecting their own ways of growing and learning, in order to conform to what their wives wanted. Once they spoke with me and realized that I highly valued their perspective and preferences, everything would change. They would enthusiastically open up and tell me how much they wanted to put attention on their marriage. In this episode, you'll hear: Why personal growth doesn't look the same from person to person A story about a woman I coached who traveled for work and struggled with long-distance communication with her husband A man I coached on his own because his wife wasn't interested (and doesn't speak English) and the amazing results he created in his marriage. If you have a partner who isn't interested in personal growth, your instinct may be to try to change them, or give up on them...I hope this episode makes you question those options and inspires you to adopt a different strategy instead. 101. Using Travel to Enhance Intimacy, with Marilee & Paul Kostadimas
There are many different ways for a couple to connect. For Marilee and Paul Kostadimas, it has always been using travel to enhance intimacy – from the day they met on an archeological dig far from where either one of them lived. Rugged travel, luxury travel, educational travel, service-based travel, leisure travel, historical travel, and many other kinds of travel form the defining backbone of this couple's beautiful, intimate marriage. They live by the mantra, "meaningful travel is part of a meaningful life" and they see themselves as travel partners in life, through life, and for life. While this shared value has been there since they met, it has evolved over time and taken many different shapes over the course of their long, nourishing marriage. The Kostadimas' share their love story and how travel became so important to them and has enhanced their marriage–so much so, that they started a company, Spotlight Sojourns, to inspire and connect others wanting to enjoy more meaningful and varied travel together. Also In this episode: How these two bring balance to their relationship through respecting one another's gifts and creativity: Paul's photography skills and Marilee's way with words Marilee and Paul's conviction that couples shouldn't commit to marriage until they've traveled together How Marilee and Paul became passionate about travel and allowed that to color their lives The different types of travel styles and how Marilee and Paul choose their next adventures Marilee has such a beautiful way with words that invites you to feel the moments she shares from this couple's incredible adventures. 99. Where Christians Get Their Sex Toys, With Teresa & Blair Bass
Although I don't typically focus on religious considerations on The Intimate Marriage Podcast, I was thrilled to have a wonderful conversation with devoted, church-going Christians Teresa and Blair Bass. They set out to make a change in the way their fellow Christians view sex and intimacy by opening a Christian sex toy shop where you can purchase sex toys and other supplies, receive instruction and respectful encouragement. Now this is the place where Christians get their sex toys. The Basses share their story and the many challenges they faced in this unique, courageous, and remarkably honest conversation. You'll hear about: How Blair and Teresa define purity culture and my take on it How purity culture can impact women's relationship to sex How Teresa reacted when Blair presented the idea of opening a Christian sex toy shop How Blair's expertise in supply chain management translates to sex toys How Teresa and Blair navigated the complicated responses of their pastor and other members of their church Get 10% Off From The Romantic Blessings Sex Toy Shop Use this code: IMP10 Stay Connected with Teresa and Blair: Website | Instagram | Blog Connect With The Show: Facebook | Facebook Group | Linkedin | Website | Twitter | Instagram If you're ready to create the deliciousness and joy of a growth-oriented, passionate relationship, visit: www.alexandrastockwell.com If you're ready for your relationship to feel as good on the inside as it looks on the outside, read this. 98. How Masculine-Feminine Polarity Teachings Undermine Intimacy
Implementing masculine and feminine polarity teachings prohibits the cultivation of uncompromising intimacy, because they place you in a particular role that inhibits the expression who you really are. This is an outdated view on relationships and ultimately undermines the idea that the tension between "masculine" and "feminine" ways of being creates erotic chemistry in a relationship. This usually is understood to mean that having a man embody masculine energy and a woman embody feminine energy (in a heteronormative relationship) will result in a wonderful marriage. It's far more important to focus on your own authenticity and self-expression, rather than taking on a particular gender role. In this episode, I discuss: How masculine and feminine roles have changed over the decades (including examples from my own relatives) Why I believe that masculine and feminine polarity teachings are extremely restrictive My client, Suzanne, who was hesitant to participate in coaching because she was so concerned about giving up who she is in order to fit into a "feminine" role (as she felt she would be losing herself in the process) When masculine and feminine polarity teachings ARE helpful in an intimate marriage Resources referenced in this episode: Uncompromising Intimacy podcast episode Going Beyond the 5 Love Languages podcast episode Download the first chapter of my book, Uncompromising Intimacy Connect With The Show: Facebook | Facebook Group | Linkedin | Website | Twitter | Instagram If you're ready to create the deliciousness and joy of a growth-oriented, passionate relationship, visit: www.alexandrastockwell.com If you're ready for your relationship to feel as good on the inside as it looks on the outside, read this. 96. When Your Complaints Become Desires
Your complaints can become desires. Oftentimes, however, when I talk to couples about challenges in their relationship, no matter the issue, there is one common theme: one of them wants the other to make a change. When the partner stays the same, they inevitably respond with resentment. This is the cycle that happens no matter what the issue is. Whether it's about sex, parenting, work, or anything else, this is the pattern that plays out. In this episode, you'll hear detailed examples of 3 real-life couples I've worked with: A couple who was fighting constantly A couple who had a non-existent sex life A couple where he was working too much and she felt he needed to be more present in their marriage If you've been looking for an accessible way to work on your marriage and see real results, my brand new Aligned & Hot Marriage LIVE program is for you! 94. Libido Mismatch Is A Myth
Libido mismatch is a myth. That's right. In my experience working with hundreds of people on relationships and intimacy, drawing the conclusion that one person has a low libido and the other person has a high libido is an oversimplification of a much larger (and much more solvable) issue. Libido mismatch is an easy assumption to make because it is an accurate description of what seems to be happening at the moment. But, it is not an explanation and it is not the root cause of the issue at hand. I experienced a disconnect in our marriage but couldn't see a single reason why this was happening. The cause, however, had nothing to do with a present-day occurrence; it was something from my husband's past that was creating the disconnect in our marriage. He didn't want it to. He didn't even know it was. Nevertheless, it was definitely happening. In this episode, you'll hear: How I realized what was causing us to become disconnected What happened when I shared the theory with my husband Why challenging times with your spouse may have nothing to do with you A real client example of how past experiences can come up in your present … and much more!
