Ep 166Episode 158 Tauranga NZ with Gian Booysen

On Episode 158, our very first international on location podcast!! What can I say to sum up the Tauranga that Gian Booysen showed off... put simply, as a flats destination, Tauranga is the most undersold saltwater flats fishery in the world !! The place is a mecca and for many people standing on the outside looking in (trout fishermen, and Saltwater Fly fishermen from overseas) who are already aware of Kingfish (Yellowtail) on the flats, particularly the famous ray riders which are definitely very very cool, but.... the free swimming Kingfish are truly a special target... Fussy, big, challenging to see and you absolutely will see your arbour knot in 5 seconds flat !! Think GT and Bonefish and you will be almost on the money regarding the approach and fight these Kingfish offer. Tauranga is a place that no matter the conditions offers truly epic saltwater flyfishing. Personally, the most incredible part of the journey was proper size Snapper in knee deep water, tipping and tailing like any premier flats fish you can think of. They (Snapper) eat all the same stuff you throw at Permit or Goldies, they go super hard ( you will see plenty of backing) and if your fishing deeper than chest deep, your wasting your time. The other two main species Kahawai and Silver Trevally are definitely no slouches either and they also get a great run on the podcast... Both are also members of the Tauranga super slam which is a very achievable goal when fishing with Gian from https://www.kingstobefound.com/ This podcast is proudly presented by Nervous Water, Power Pole, Kettafly and Beast Brushes

Also on this show, we give a pretty detailed account of the new Power Pole "Move" trolling motors. These motors are nothing like you will have seen before.. a lot faster, a hell of a lot quieter and a lot more efficient. Learn a little more before this giant killer of an electric motor hits Australia. This show is brought to you by Nervous water, Kettafly, Power Pole and Beast Brushes

Ep 164Episode 156 - Starting Out Special

On Episode 156, The hosts reflect back on their respective almost 25 years of flyfishing each, to offer hindsight for beginners and talk about what it was like for them starting out. The show is themed along the lines of what they would do again or do differently if presented with the opportunity to start out again. This essentially is an episode for those starting out, or are interested in giving the "fluff wand" a go. The show covers gear selection and compares what the industry wants to sell you versus what you should be buying. Where should you funnel the most funds on a budget. Reels and lines a decision making process that's more simple than you'd think. Figuring out the casting, how important is it to get it right early on, or can you just get by with a scented fly and burley until you get better. Also, the raging debate on whether you should buy or tie flies, and how important is understanding fly tying to a beginner. I think if your listening to this as a beginner or looking to get back to basics, you will find a very trimmed pragmatic approach to fly fishing that involves no mystery or elitism... Just an effective way to fish that will require a bit of discipline on your part, and not a lot of money. As always, the show exists because of these great sponsors Nervous Water, Kettafly, Power Pole and Beast Brushes

Ep 163Episode 155 - New Ground with Paul Dolan ( Mackay Fly and Sportfishing)

On episode 155, we are very proud to present to you for the second time around Paul Dolan. Many of you will have listened to Episode 36 when Paul joined us last... Since then, a bit has been going on. As many will know, Mackay has earned its place on the Permit map, and Paul, although not the first person to catch them there, is what we believe is the first person to setup and guide for Permit in the area... And what an impact he has made!! You will hear on the show that last year, Paul got his clients 26 Permit in the net, from 28 days guiding, and many many more that in shots with some dropped fish too. All this after the first half of the year ruined by record floods and a record cold winter in an area that has 5 meter tide variations. Pauls passion for his local permit is infectious, you will find it hard not to connect to the passion he radiates during this interview. Australia has so many great Permit destinations, and after listening to this show, you'd be mad not to consider Mackay as part of that conversation. Wil is a great educator and his style is ultra pragmatic. We got Wil on here to chat about his approach to Permit, and we think that if you are a Permit chaser, Permit holiday maker or someone who wants to tick that bucket list fish off in the future, you will not want to miss this... we do get technical. Apologies in advance for those who just not into Permit....In that case, we are also sorry to learn there might be something wrong with you. For first aid, listen to the show. Ep 156Episode 148 - Return of the Voltz 2

Usually in these captions we try to inspire you listen to the show, but on this weeks show, the first half of the show is a tale of two entwined travellers named Kyle and Voltron. KV as the charismatic duo will now be referred to as, set upon their annual sojourn to Queensland's Whitsunday region. This show captures the highs and the lows of this years trip that clearly highlights that adventure is not for everyone. Hear tales of the one that got a way, survival of incredible weather events, true bonds made with local legends, the wild animals that live on the land and a plethora of lutjanids that requires Google to makes sense of it all, not to mention big blue blobs in shallow water. Also on this show we talk about some new Australian inventions entering the fly tying market, tales of woe and success with electric motors and the legends at Minn Repairs who sort them out , our new show sponsor and why we have ditched sponsors in the past and why we work with others, all this and chat about a new Vlog concept that we just might run with... we want to know your thoughts. Ep 155Episode 147 - Estuary Jedi Clinic with Brook Swanton and James Caves

Its the hallmark of any remarkable angler to have the ability to fish your local waters well, and to many people around Australia, that means Saltwater Estuaries and bread and butter species. Of these highly accessible species, none can be as challenging as the humble Bream... Overlooked by some who feel they are above them, yet Bream have the ability to embarrass those same people by outsmarting even the stealthiest angler. On the flip side, there are those that know and understand that these incredibly slow growing and smart fish offer everything that defines saltwater fly fishing. To fish for Bream well, is a lifelong journey and on this show we talk to 2 of the best in the country, James Caves and Brook Swanton. These two guys live miles apart (James, Bermagui and Brook, Gold Coast) and both live in some of the most pressured waters in Australia, be it population, commercial pressure or pollution, the bream mentioned in this show are hard earned. On this show we aim to inspire you to get out and give these challenging fish a go... light rods and leaders, pin point accurate casts, tailing fish in a few inches of water, topwater and deep structure... the humble Bream is only unrated by those who either struggle to catch them or are yet to realise they have everything we travel for right on your doorstep. Ep 154Episode 146 - Scott Mitchell SAVE OUR FLATS

On Episode 146, Yep, we are not going to let this go... there is still a wild amount of apathy amongst rec fishers who's lives and businesses the Great Sandy Straits Marin Park Zoning Proposal effects. So on this show we got the one guy who has been tirelessly promoting change for 17 years while many sat and watched. On this episode we get Scott Mitchell on who honestly needs a flat named after him if this goes through!! The guy could have easily sat back at BBQ's and talked about how good it could be if the GSMP had true conservation zones, but he did something and did it in an unwavering manner at the risk of his personal safety on land and on the water, in addition to his actions affecting his non fishing related business.... Scotto has everything to lose with us and the environment having everything to gain. Everything Scotto says on this show can be backed up from independent sources... nothing he is hearsay. The GSMP is a world heritage listed are that allows gill netting amongst other forms of commercial fishing in true conservation zones.... by removing the part that allows this ( referred to as red cross hatching) the GSMP will be for the greater part net free. PLEASE go and sign the online submission form here - https://intheloop.des.qld.gov.au/great-sandy-marine-park-zoning-plan We hear on the show how some of the commercial sector use bullying and intimidation techniques on Scotto and surrounding businesses. We also hear the overwhelming support that they show behind the scenes for fear of being seen as a supporter of conservation and the Fraser Coast Fishing Alliance. Please show your support... what happens here reflects on all rec fishers... those with heavy commercial netting in their area should be very keen on how this unfolds as this could very well be a foundation that highlights both the economic and environmental bounce back that seals the deal for your local area as a net free zone. This show is brought to you by Nervous Water, Kettafly, Power Pole and Beast Brushes.

Please give this a listen. Ep 150Episode 142 -Modern Innovation last 15 years

On this episode, we took on the task of going through some of the most impactful innovations that we have had in fly fishing, and fly tying over the last 15 years... I can tell you, it may not be what you think. This is not a rod or reel review, but a thoughtful approach to some of the overlooked innovations that have affected us all in the last 15 years. let us know what you think in the comments. Also on this show we bring up some of the most heavily commented on topic we have had since the show started... no its not eating Carp... it's do Bumphead Parrot fish eat. We talk about some of the DM's we have had that were inspired by the last show. And didn't the topic of copy cats bring up some charged emotions !! Almost as much from those industry types that don't like the follow the beef campaign too !! listen in as we round that topic up a little further. Ep 149Episode 141 - Keith Rose-Innes (Alphonse Fishing Company)

On Episode 141- We are really excited to bring you a true GOAT as we chat to Keith Rose-Innes. Keith is well known around the world for playing a major role in exposing the Seychelles as one of the most iconic Flyfishing destinations known, however there is so much more to Keith that we talk about on this show. Keith's influence on the greater fishing community goes beyond his results on the water, as many will know that Keith has been integral in the development of some of the most popular flies that have comes from the Seychelles such as the Alplexo Crab, The Brush Fly and the NYAP. On this show we talk about the very first Alplexo Crab and how that pattern came about. Keith is also part owner of Shilton Reels, as well as an ambassador/ advisor for Thomas &Thomas Fly Rods and Cortland Fly Lines. We cover a lot of interesting stuff on this episode, but what will be of a lot of interest to many is the " Do bumpies actually eat" discussion. Also on this show, we chat about industry ethics, of the back of a recent run of plagiarism that we seen target Aussie innovators in both the Fly Industry and the Conventional industry. We chat about how this legal but unethical practice is actually affecting you and offer a few thoughts on how you can benefit your time on the water by your actions off the water regarding this ugliness. Ep 147The Intermediate Vice Ep 5 - John Everett (Fish New England)

Last week, I had the opportunity to chat to John Everett from Fish New England. John is a very pragmatic fly tyer, who is a shining example of what translating observations made on the water to the vice looks like. Many people will already know John to be an inspiring man who is always free with advice and time, this also runs true in this interview as we talk about the trials and tribulations involved in fly design for John and how time on the water is what has shaped the flies we see today. Many people will know John as the "Cod Fly" guy, but John is more rounded than that, and although John has spent many hours in the salt and lake Barra, he is well known for tying in his lane, a great lesson for all of us, especially those new to the sport. Having been close to the forefront of Murray Cod fly design has afforded John the ability to see both failures and successes of the successful flies we see today. Tune and listen to the stories behind some of the greatest Cod flies this country has known. This show is brought to you by Nervous Water, Kettafly Apparel and Beast Brushes

Ep 146Episode 139 - Rod Review, 2am Fish Mongers and Nerding out on Bucktail

Episode 139 is one of those episodes where we just get caught up in conversation yep we lost track of time for the intro and just talked flyfishing for an hour and forty minutes. We chat about Ugg Boot management, new experiences with Glass fly rods, the wonderful hairtail as a fly target, targeting fish in estuaries at night in winter, fast sink lines for Bream, Suss characters at boat ramps at hours when most people should be asleep and the nuances of Bucktail production. I think its fair enough to say that this podcast has it all for those average joes like us who are just out giving it a crack and are making friends at boat ramps no matter what the time of night. The information source for angler access rights is one he not only deals with professionally but also passionately. We run a series of layman questions past Al, to get an insight into our rights as a bankside angler or a saltwater angler who fishes urban environments, so you can combat the aqua karens. Ep 144The Intermediate Vice Ep 4 - Brandon Bailes ( Panther Branch Bugs)

On Episode 4 of the Intermediate Vice, I am stoked to interview someone I and many people draw a lot of inspiration from, and that guest is Brandon Bailes who is Panther Branch Bugs. Brandon hales from northern Alabama in the USA, where he grew up fishing for the various Bass species his area has on offer. From these experiences, Brandon has developed very much his own style of fly tying and is considered by many as a world leader. Although openly admitting to drawing inspiration from many fly tyers around the world, Brandon has a great skill of adapting flies to suit what he sees on the water which makes Brandon one of the most interesting fly tyers in my opinion... his on water results are excellent to say the least. In addition to his excellent stream craft and inshore saltwater fishing, Brandon is world class when it comes to Bass and Panfish flies. Listen as we discuss the parallels between Australian Bass and Smallmouth Bass that are literally oceans apart but also quite similar. We also talk about the Deerhair bugs we both like to throw at them. The technical talk surrounds the techniques we find common ground on with Deerhair and some of the unique additions and alterations Brandon makes for his own flies that end up seen down many a Smallmouth Bass' throat. This is an awesome episode, and one I hope you enjoy. We will have to get Brandon on again, the recorded show was only half of the phone conversation had when we weren't recording...we definitely have more to discuss in the future. Ep 143Episode 137 - Comps, Crabs and

On Episode 137, we talk about the rising popularity and success of the Gav's crab. Pictured here in the corner of the first ever Permit to eat one (caught by host Chris) and now seen in a stack more permit since. In a seemingly short period of time, this crab fly has really got some runs on the board, so we chat about its origins and a few directions that many wouldn't know about. Also, we show our age and chat about the golden era of Saltwater Fly Fishing Tournaments in Australia, and the impact they have had on both product development and the old school community that used to actually meet face to face. Sadly, we don't see anything like these tournaments anymore, with only the Hinchinbrook Challenge and the Darwin Fly Rodders flying the flag for what's left. This is a pretty meaty chat, one we hope provokes discussion. Should we bring the Tuna comps back? Is the Gav's Crab the Permit slayer we have been looking for? Will we see it go by the wayside in Australian Flyfishing media like many other Australian developed flies? let us know in the comments. Ep 142Episode 136 - Stu Dodd’s Doddcast

On Episode 136, we chat to West Coast legend Stu Dodd. We had the intention of getting to know Stu on the air having only admired his photos from afar, but what resulted was a rich tapestry of mainly fly fishing related tangents that we took on this episode!! Not many people have covered the west coast like Stu, and although we are dealing with arguably Australia's most successful colour-blind flyfisho, he has defiantly pinned some of the glamorous fish WA has to offer. He's not a shipwright, yet his home build skiff is mint, be sure to follow along with his Instagram page open. The tangents are thick and the jokes are bad, but we think its a pretty good show, we hope you do to !! This show is brought to you by Nervous Water, Ketafly Apparel and Beast Brushes

Ep 141The Intermediate Vice - Ep 3 Captain Dave Bradley

With over 300 days on the water and a career that spanned 25 years, the now retired captain Dave Bradley has seen a thing or two. When asked for his own opinion of himself as a fly tyer, he doesn't rate himself as fancy, just practical and that's what has seen over 400 permit lock eyes with Dave while he's removing the successful fly. On this show I chat to Dave about what observations he can offer in fly design as it relates to fishes behaviour, the environment they have to contend with and and standout flies he has known. An unsung hero as guides often are when it comes to fly design, Dave is very well known for his Bradley Barra Bunny, but did you know how much input he has had into other popular crab flies? Dave also has a personal insight into some of the more popular and oldest Saltwater flies designed or influenced by the likes of Harry Speak and Steve Huff that get little mention these days when compared to the more popular flies that have been modelled from them. This was a tough one to put together for a fly tying podcast as there was 100 different direction the conversation could have gone, I sincerely hope you enjoy the show and get something out it as a fly tyer. Ep 140Episode 135 - Nicky Mill

Today we present a conversation we had last week with all round nice guy Nicky Mill. Nicky is the creator and co host of the Millhouse Podcast which needs no introduction, but if you haven't heard of it, please do yourself a favour and search it out. This is the second time we have had Nicky on the show, the first time over a year ago with his father and Co Host of the Millhouse Podcast, Andy Mill. On this show we wanted to learn more about Nicky, apart from what we know of him through the podcast, we wanted to know about him as a person, a podcaster, a bow hunter and a fisherman. We really hope you enjoy this show, it was really cool for us to chat to Nicky again and learn more about the dude. I reckon we covered it all ; ) This show is brought to you by Nervous Water, Kettafly Apparel and Beast Brushes

Ep 139The Intermediate Vice Ep2 - Nic Stewart

On Episode 2 of The Intermediate Vice, Nic Stewart tells us about the even darker side of fly tying... Composite loops, Tubes, rare and endangered natural materials, Waddington shanks etc... and if that doesn't grab you.. how does talking about Intruders, Munkers and Willy's Whips interest you ? That's right, Nic is a Spey demon and a good one too !! This is a meaty show, a lot to unpack... you asked for more technical... this one should wet the appetite. Ep 137Special Episode 1 - Andy Bolch

The first of an irregular series of special shows presented by the Intermediate Line Podcast nicknamed "The Intermediate Vice". The Intermediate Vice is hosted by Chris and will feature candid and technical fly tying talk with some of his favourite tyers. On episode 1, Chris chats to Andy Bolch who is an all-round fan of all fly tying and accomplished angler who is innovative and insightful in his approach to tying flies. Although a fisherman first and foremost, Andy is an occasionally a commercial tyer when he's in the mood. Andy and Chris see eye to eye about many things in fly tying, but strongly disagree on a few items too which we hope makes for an engaging chat to listen too. If you are into tying your own flies or trying to understand fly design, then this new concept just might be a great show to tie flies too. Remember we don't promise any regularity to the Intermediate Vice, but we do promise less jokes and mucking around, and just a straight up conversation about our time at the vice. Ep 135Episode 132 - Dr Owen Li

On Episode 132, we are honoured to have Dr Owen Li on the show. Owen is a Doctor of Social Science specialising in recreational fishing activity. Owen joins us on the show today to discuss the wide spread shark problem that recreational commercial anglers have been experiencing in recent years. Owen is on of the main guys behind the info fish app called "Sharkd". This app is a free app that provides researchers like Owen valuable data on non desirable shark interactions so that this information can be studied by those that can effect policy and change. Many anglers complain about the shark problem yet are still not aware of the app, but will complain that nothing is being done about the problem. Owen and his team are offering a real solution to being heard, that may be the start of fixing the issue. You can get Sharkd for any device where you normally get your apps. Ep 133Episode 130 - Gian Booysen ( Kings To Be Found)e

On Episode 130 - We chat to Gian Booysen, a resident of New Zealand, a saltwater flyfishing guide and marine biologist. Spending the time with Gian made for a super interesting chat, sure we learned a little about the guy, but what was very interesting is that we spoke a lot about the prey on the flats just as much as we spoke about the kingfish up in the skinny water that hunt them. If you think NZ is all trout and Deepwater saltwater fishing, then you are missing out... think 1 meter long Kingfish, think crabs, think flats for miles, think of seeing your arbor knot, think every part of a flats fishing destination that has fish that will get the heart rat going so fast that you may never go to NZ for trout again !! For a very special announcement about the show, please listen to the outro. This show is brought to you by Nervous Water, Kettafly Apparel and Beast Brushes

Ep 132Episode 129 - Leroy Addison

On Episode 129- We talk to a young student of Fly fishing, Leroy Addison. Leroy is located near Melbourne Victoria, and is like most of us, realising that every day is a school day when it comes to Flyfishing. Transitioning from early beginnings of fishing for Trout in Tasmania and Victoria, Leroy is turning his recent attention to Australian natives and that delicious river meat known as Carp. We asked Leroy on to tell us about his sum of experiences in addition to how someone who has grown up with the influence of social media sifts through the smoke and mirrors to fine tune his results on the water. An interesting show that started off with no real direction that quickly took a few turns that would be of interest to anyone who is watching and tuning their interests through readily available information sources. Disclaimer .... Leroy knows that Goulburn River doesn't feed Eildon, he knows it's the other way around... it was just a brain fart that he wanted us to let you know about.
