592: The Evangelical Bro Code & Debriefing America's Border Crisis with Matthew Soerens and Carmen Imes

Why do so many women find Christian organizations difficult places to work? Katelyn Beaty says the "bro code" within evangelicalism is to blame. She's back to define the different parts of bro code and why it needs to change. Then, immigration is once again a hot political debate, and it ranked as the top issue for many white evangelicals in recent elections. Last month, a group of Holy Posters visited the Southern border to see what's really happening, meet with church leaders on both sides, as well as border agents. Skye and Kaitlyn Schiess are joined by Old Testament scholar Carman Imes and World Relief's Matthew Soerens to debrief their trip. 591: The Social Gospel Strikes Back & Plodding Through Life with Drew Dyck

Striking auto union workers are quoting the Bible, progressive politicians are citing Jesus, and religious language is returning to more liberal causes. While everyone is focused on the rise of Christian nationalism on the political right, have we been ignoring a resurgence of the social gospel on the political left? Then, Drew Dyck is back to discuss his new book, "Just Show Up." He says the evangelical culture's focus on changing the world for God warps our vision of a faithful life, and he argues there is deep significance in committing to simple, unspectacular callings. Plus, Phil coins a term that makes it into the Washington Post. And, an alcohol company has appointed a robot as its CEO. What could possibly go wrong? 590: Who's the Most Pro-Life? & the Bible on Immigration with M. Daniel Carroll

Democrats are pro-choice and Republicans are pro-life. Right? According to Ryan Burge it's not that simple. He says a closer look at the data reveals more nuance to the issue, including a significant number of Black and Latino Democrats who are strongly pro-life, and pro-life Republicans who support traditionally progressive social policies. In a post-Roe America, the abortion issue is getting a lot more complicated. Then, Skye talks to Old Testament professor M. Daniel Carroll about a theology of immigration. He says that before Christians adopt a political policy about immigration they first need a biblical vision of immigrants themselves. All of that, plus smashing pumpkin records. French Friday: Liberty U., Israel, & Social Identity Theory

Liberty University, the country's largest Christian college, is facing a record-breaking fine of $37.5 million for failing to report crimes, including sexual assaults, that occur on its campus. David French and Skye Jethani discuss the case and its similarities to other scandals within Christian institutions. Why is there a culture of cover-ups within American evangelicalism? French points to the "siege mentality" of the culture war, and Jethani unpacks the way strong group identities make us dismissive of our group's evils while magnifying those of others. They then apply this other news stories including Israel's war with Hamas and the ongoing mess in Congress. 588: Pointless Theology Fights & Rethinking American Poverty with Matthew Desmond

A Christian writer in Australia has a list of seven "pointless" things Christians fight about "for no good reason" including predestination, evolution, the inerrancy of the Bible, and worship. Phil presents all seven to Kaitlyn and Skye and discovers that maybe they're not all pointless. Then, Kaitlyn interviews best-selling author and professor Matthew Desmond about his most recent book, "Poverty, by America." He says the amount of poverty in the country is not an intractable problem but a choice. He challenges the narratives we tell ourselves about taxes, welfare, and the poor, and says the church should be more angry about what's happening to the most vulnerable in our society. Why I'm Still a Christian with Jemar Tisby

The last five or six years have been rough for many thoughtful faithful Christians. The embrace of Trump and Trumpism, the rise of ethnic nationalism and xenophobia, conspiracy theories and abuse scandals have rocked the church. Many have walked away in disgust. Some have spoken out and paid the price and yet, rather than walking away, they have remained committed to Christ and his church. We wanted to sit down with a few of those who have cried out like voices in the wilderness and who have been attacked by the church they love, and yet still remain. 585: The Overlooked Heroes of American Christianity with Jasmine Holmes

For decades most Americans have said other people cannot be trusted. The exception was regular churchgoers who reported more faith in their neighbors, but new data says attending church no longer boosts social trust. What's changed? Why are political conservatives suddenly talking much less about abortion and much more about transgender issues? Young earth creationists and Christian nationalists are flirting. What's the attraction? Kaitlyn Schiess talks to author and Instagram historian, Jasmine Holmes, about her new book "Crowned with Glory," and the overlooked story of how Black Christians shaped American history. And Phil has a disturbing story about rats, slugs, and worms. Holy Post Plus: Holy Post Office - How should Western Christians be involved in missions? Why I'm Still a Christian with Russell Moore

One of those people is Russell Moore who spent his whole life in the Southern Baptist convention. After standing against Trump and then advocating for an honest assessment of sexual abuse within the SBC, Moore became a pariah among the conservative wing of the convention, ultimately leading to his departure from the SBC. I sat down with Russell Moore to hear his story and find out why through it all, he's still following Jesus. 0:00 - Theme Song 0:29 - Intro 1:37 - Moore speaking out in 2016 11:16 - How Moore's faith has been impacted 16:32 - Sponsor - AG1 To get your FREE 1 year supply of Vitamin D AND 5 free travel packs with your first purchase, go to athleticgreens.com/HOLYPOST 18:03 - How Moore stays focus on Jesus 37:10 - End Credits Resources: Russell Moore https://www.russellmoore.com Episode Music - "Sorrow's Got a Hold On Me" by Paul Zach https://www.paulzachmusic.com/ https://open.spotify.com/album/0IGfsm8Y61UxmkCcaAWtHg Holy Post website: https://www.holypost.com/ Holy Post Plus: www.holypost.com/plus Holy Post Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/holypost Holy Post Merch Store: https://www.holypost.com/shop The Holy Post is supported by our listeners. French Friday - Abortions Rise & Civic Ignorance

Even pro-life critics of Donald Trump credit him with appointing three Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v Wade. But now Trump is calling further restrictions to abortion a "terrible thing." Why are pro-life conservatives still overwhelming supporting the ex-President? David French discusses the shifting politics of the pro-life movement, the risk of aligning with Trump, and why abortions are on the rise after overturning Roe. Plus, data shows most Americans have always been ignorant about how their own government is structured and works, so why is civic ignorance now more dangerous than before? French says it's because the civic ignorance of the citizens has now infected our government leaders as well, and these elites no longer police themselves or defend institutional norms. 0:00 - Theme Song 0:17 - Trump's comments about abortion 13:57 - Pragmatic ways to reduce abortion 26:05 - A Culture of Hope 31:12 - Sponsor - With God Daily Sign up today at withgoddaily.com 32:14 - Sponsor - Dreamland Baby Go to dreamlandbabyco.com and enter my code HOLYPOST at checkout to receive 20% off sitewide + free shipping 34:11 - Civic Ignorance 1:06:28- End Credits Other resources: David French: https://twitter.com/DavidAFrench Trump tries to play both sides on abortion https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4219271-trump-tries-to-play-both-sides-on-abortion/ The Importance of Hope in the Pro-Life Movement https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/22/opinion/abortion-law-reality.html The articulate ignorance of Vivek Ramaswamy https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/31/opinion/ramaswamy-political-ignorance.html https://www.holypost.com/ Support us and find premium content by going to https://www.patreon.com/holypost The Holy Post is supported by our listeners. 584: Dress Codes, Growing Fears, & Why Grace is Still Amazing with Philip Yancey

The Senate is relaxing its dress code so senators can wear hoodies and gym shorts, but senate staffers are still required to wear suits and ties. Is it a meaningless change or the sign of wider institutional decay? A new study finds 7 out of 10 pastors say their congregations are more fearful about the world and the future. Are they really being shaped by the gospel of Christ or by the fearmongers in the media? And researchers asked religious Americans, what's the bigger problem today—actual racism or false accusations of racism? The responses are telling. Then, author Philip Yancey is back for the 25th anniversary of his best-selling book, "What So Amazing About Grace?" He says our culture is even more divided and condemning than when he first wrote the book in the 1990s, and he examines why grace has fallen out of favor even among Christians and how to get it back. Theologian and writer, Esau McCaulley, is back to talk about his new memoir "How Far to the Promised Land: One Black Family's Story of Hope and Survival in the American South." He says there is grace in learning to tell the complicated facets of his family's story, rather than reducing it to a single story about race, poverty, or trauma. McCaulley believes that's a lesson we need to apply to America's story as well. Also this week, David Brooks writes about the courage and wisdom of three women during World War II. 582: The Rise and Fall of New Atheism with Justin Brierley

If you live in a part of the country that was originally settled by Puritans or Quakers you will probably live a lot longer than if you live in a region colonized by the Scots, the Irish, or that was dominated by slavery. A new article explores why this is true, and we discuss how immigration patterns from 200 years ago even impacts how we read the Bible. UK broadcast, speaker, and host of the Unbelievable? Podcast, Justin Brierley, is back to discuss his new book, "The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God." In it he documents how the same political divisions and culture war issues that are dividing the church have also ruptured the New Atheism movement, and how that's leading more academics and intellectuals to reconsider the claims of Christianity. 581: How Evangelicalism Lost Its Way with Russell Moore

A prominent conservative Calvinist has denounced white Christian Nationalism as heretical and racist, but the movement is still gaining popularity within theologically Reformed circles. How deep is this divide among the anti-woke theobros? New data says the massive rise in loneliness and depression is linked to the rise in singleness, and that marriage remains the best predictor of happiness. Then, Russell Moore is back to discuss his new book, "Losing Our Religion: An Altar Call for Evangelical America." He explains how evangelical churches form people to value authoritarian leadership, why evangelicalism's response to market forces is a great strength and its fatal weakness, and how the fear that drives so many evangelicals is a betrayal of the faith. Then, Skye talks to Kaitlyn about the launch of her new book, "The Ballot and the Bible," and the way political movements have used and abused scripture throughout American history. 578: How America Got Mean & Why We Misread the Bible with John Walton

In a new article in The Atlantic, David Brooks asks how America became so mean. He says moral formation used to be a key part of social, religious, and educational structures in the country, but after World War II communal virtues were abandoned for an individualistic and therapeutic model. Simply put, we stopped teaching people how to be good. But what's missing from Brooks' solution? A popular preacher says he won't watch The Chosen because it violates the Second Commandment prohibiting any images of God. Is he right? Then, Dr. John Walton is back to discuss his new book, "Wisdom for Faithful Reading." He explains why relying on the Holy Spirit isn't enough when engaging the Bible, and why he believes the American church isn't facing a crisis of biblical illiteracy but a crisis of biblical interpretation. 577: How Church Became Theater & the Evangelical Imagination with Karen Swallow Prior

A new survey of worship leaders finds that four megachurches have cornered the worship music market. Should we care who is writing the songs we sing in church, and what gets lost when market forces influence local ministries? A sermon clip has gone viral showing a megachurch pastor scolding people who arrive late or leave early because they are treating the "church like it's a religious show instead of a welcoming family." But are people acting like church is a show because that's the model church leaders have created? We explore the history of how churches came to copy theaters and its impact on the church's mission and power. Then, Phil talks to Karen Swallow Prior about her new book, "The Evangelical Imagination: How Stories, Images, and Metaphors Created a Culture in Crisis." She explains how the current crisis in evangelicalism finds its roots in trying to preserve Victorian values rather than biblical ones. Also this week: a celebrity bear is above the law. 576:Christian A.I., Church Dropouts, & Fixing Men with Christine Emba

A new chatbot based on OpenAI claims to have a "biblical worldview" and invites users to ask questions directly to the Apostle Paul. Is this a helpful tool, or another step closer to replacing Christian community with artificial intelligence? Then, a new article in The Atlantic says 40 million Americans have stopped attending church because our culture is addicted to work and no longer values community. But is it all the culture's fault, or does the church also carry some blame? Washington Post columnist, Christine Emba, is back to discuss her new report about the masculinity crisis. Hollywood is struggling. Fewer people are going to theaters, but this week saw the opening of two huge movies including Barbie. Can the movie revive Hollywood, or will its social commentary drive more Americans away? Florida's anti-woke policy is now revising how its public schools teach history by saying enslaved people benefited from the skills they learned. What's really behind the move to downplay the evil of slavery? Dr. Carmen Imes is back to discuss her new book "Being God's Image." 574: Non-Toxic Masculinity & Lessons from the Black Church with Justin Giboney

The feminist movement has made significant advances in the last 50 years, but data indicates men are falling behind. Fewer men then women are graduating from college, deaths of despair are highest among men, and the phrase "toxic masculinity" is ubiquitous in the culture. Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn discuss Christine Emba's new article seeking a positive vision for masculinity and why it's elusive to both the right and left. Then, Kaitlyn talked to Justin Giboney from the And Campaign about the upcoming 2024 election. How can Christians avoid the partisan polarization and culture war extremism? Giboney says we should be like Jesus who took firm positions on issues of his day, but he did not pick sides. 570: Hello AI Sermons, Goodbye Saddleback, & Happy Juneteenth with Rasool Berry

Christians in Germany are using ChatGPT to create liturgies and even preach sermons. Is the rise of AI different from previous technologies, and how should the church respond? Meanwhile, the South Baptists voted overwhelmingly to prohibit women from being pastors and banned any churches that disagree. How did an issue that even John Piper argued was not essential in 1991 become grounds for excommunication in 2023? Then, a new documentary by author and pastor, Rasool Berry, introduces the history and meaning of Juneteenth. 569: Shiny Happy Certainty & How Women Led in the Early Church with Nijay Gupta

Two events have our attention. First, a new documentary about reality TV's Dugger family is exposing the ugly side of the Christian fundamentalism, patriarchy, and legalism taught by Bill Gothard's ministry. And, Christian broadcaster and pillar of the Religious Right, Pat Robertson, died this week at 93. Was there a link between the popularity of Gothard and Robertson for a whole generation of American Christians? Then, New Testament scholar Nijay Gupta talks about his new book "Tell Her Story: How Women Led, Taught, and Ministered in the Early Church." And he participates in an unexpected therapy session with Skye about their shared background. Also this week—Kaitlyn is learning German, book bans backfire on the Bible in Utah, and Phil rescues pets from fallen ministry leaders. Bud Light, Target, Kohls, Chick-Fil-A—the list of companies and brands being boycotted by Christians keeps getting longer. Now there are even calls to boycott the hit streaming series about Jesus, "The Chosen." When are boycotts justified, when are they just performative, and is there any escape from the purity death spiral they create? Then, Skye talks to Pastor Brenda Quinn and author Richard Foster about his new book, "Learning Humility." 566: Tim Keller, American Poverty, & the Legacy of Rich Mullins with James Bryan Smith

Influential pastor, author, and apologist, Tim Keller, passed away last week. We reflect on Keller's ministry and wonder who is filling the shoes of the Christian giants we've lost. A new book about poverty says that the U.S. spends more on welfare than any other country except France, but the majority goes to help the wealthy and middle-class rather than the poor. Why aren't we doing more to end poverty, and is our view of the Bible to blame? Then, it's been 25 years since Rich Mullins died. 564: How Rapture Theology Shaped America (Part 2)

How did a theological system that rejected Christian participation in politics eventually give birth to the Religious Right? Phil talks to historian Daniel Hummel about the spread of rapture theology in the 20th century, why it spawned so many conspiracies, the legacy of the Left Behind books, and why rapture theology remains so popular despite being rejected by nearly every evangelical seminary. Also this week, why did controversial author, Joshua Butler, resign from his church? The embrace of Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump by the Religious Right is proof that the movement is now entirely post-Christian. And reflections on the coronation of King Charles III. 563: How Rapture Theology Shaped America (Part 1)

Many Christians in America simply assume that Jesus could return at any moment, that believers will be raptured in the twinkling of an eye, that the state of Israel has a special role in the End Times, and that the church should just save souls and stay out of politics. In Part 1 of an interview about this new book, historian Daniel G. Hummel explains to Phil how this rapture theology isn't rooted in church history, but was invented by a British layman less than 200 years ago. And why it was embraced by American pastors during the Civil War who wanted to avoid talking about slavery, race, and reconstruction. Also this week—paganism is on the rise. Who is really killing public schools? And women will win the battle of the sexes in 4.6 million years. Patreon Bonus: Christian Asks - What Happens to Non-Christians When They Die? https://www.patreon.com/posts/82415424/ Defined Terms to Know for This Week's Interview Millennium - The thousand year reign of Christ described in Revelation 20:1-8. There are basically three understandings of this: Premillennialism - (Think Left Behind book series) Christians will be raptured, leaving behind everyone else. There will be a tribulation period with the rise of the Antichrist, mark of the beast, war, famine, earthquakes, etc. before Christ eventually comes and rules on earth for 1,000 years during which peace will reign. After one final rebellion, God will crush evil forever, offer a final judgment, and establish heaven and hell for eternity. Postmillennialism - The millennium will come from the spiritual and moral influence of the Church through preaching and teaching. Conversions will increase and evil will diminish. In other words, Christians will make the world a better and better place and after that, Christ will come back, the dead will be resurrected, and there will be a final judgment Amillennialism - The 1000 year period mentioned in Revelation does not refer to a specific period of time, but to the heavenly reign of Christ. Rev. 20 means the return of Christ will occur at the end of history. Sees Revelation as more symbolic than literal. French Friday: How to Thrive in a Post-Christian Culture

From Harvard Law School to The New York Times, David French has repeatedly found himself in communities where secular progressivism is the majority view, and where his Christian beliefs face suspicion, ridicule, or even hostility. Skye Jethani asks French how he's learned to not just survive in these post-Christian enclaves, but actually thrive. What mistakes did he make? How did he successfully build relationships across political and philosophical barriers? And how did closer connections with those he disagreed with strengthen his faith? French also explains why Christians who sow fear and anger toward the culture will reap fear and anger from the culture. He's made that error and says joy and curiosity are what Christian leaders need to display in the public square instead. 0:00 - Intro 1:29 - David's childhood in rural Kentucky 7:23 - Sponsor - Blueland To get 15% off your first order, go to Blueland.com/HOLYPOST 8:37 - David's time at Harvard 23:18 - Sponsor - Hiya Health Go to hiyahealth.com/HOLYPOST to receive 50% off your first order 24:24 - Sponsor - Sundays Get 35% off your first order of Sundays. 562: Fox Fires Tucker, Toxic Gun Culture, & Rethinking Revivals with Derwin Gray

After admitting it broadcast election lies and conspiracies, and paying $787 million in damages, Fox News has fired its most popular host. Does this signal a change at the cable news network? An online chatbot says Christianity gives it hope. Are we witnessing the first A.I. convert? Then, more innocent people are being shot by fearful gun owners who "feel threatened." Is this the inevitable outcome of America's addiction to fear and idolatry of guns? And Derwin Gray is back to ask a question he's been sitting on for 20 years—why isn't the Civil Rights Movement considered a Christian revival? 561: How the Evangelical Movement Failed a Generation with Jon Ward

From the Jesus Movement in the 1970s, through the Religious Right in the 1980s, the rise of New Calvinism in the 1990s, and the MAGA movement today, as a Christian kid in the suburbs and then a political journalist in Washington, Jon Ward has had a front seat to the most significant characters and events in American evangelicalism. He talks with Skye about his new autobiography, "Testimony," and why he is still committed to Christian faith despite the failure of the movement that raised him. Also this week, early data shows a reduction in the number of abortions since the Supreme Court overturned Roe, but it's less than many predicted. The so-called "independent prophets'' are predicting God will kill Donald Trump's opponents next month. Why are they still supporting him when there are alternatives? And a report finds advocates of Christian Nationalism are more rooted in cultural heritage than Christian theology. Is anyone surprised? 560: The Rise of Retaliation Politics & How to Suffer Well with Alan Noble

Protests have continued after last month's school shooting in Nashville, including in the Tennessee state legislature where the majority Republicans expelled two Democrats after their protests broke the rules of decorum. What was really accomplished by this extreme response, and what's really behind the rise of retaliation politics? Then, Skye talks to Alan Noble about his new book, "On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden and Gift of Living." Noble says we've believed the lies that life is supposed to be pleasurable, that suffering is abnormal, and that our feelings are a reflection of reality. Instead, at a time when depression, anxiety, and loneliness are skyrocketing, he shows how our faith equips us to suffer well. Plus, scientists have grown mammoth meatballs. Yummy! 559: The Nashville Shooting & Preaching to a Divided Nation with Matthew Kim & Paul Hoffman

Description: Immediately after last week's school shooting in Nashville, opportunists used it to advance their favorite culture war narratives. Why does this happen after every tragedy, and why are we more likely to empathize with victims we identify closely with? Then, what impact will Donald Trump's indictment have on the 2024 presidential race? Are his evangelical supporters finally ready to move on? And, can preaching really undo the damage and division caused by cable news and social media? Kaitlyn Schiess interviews the authors of "Preaching to a Divided Nation: A Seven-Step Model for Promoting Reconciliation and Unity." Plus, Levi's goes AI and Christian is having none of it.
