Great Movie Plots Gone Wrong, Serial Killers, Defunct TV Shows Needing A Movie Reboot, The Tomorrow War
On this compilation episode, we discuss great movie plots gone wrong, our fascination with serial killers, defunct TV shows in need of a movie reboot, and Amazon Prime's The Tomorrow War. First up are those defunct TV shows that are completely off-air and that we believe deserve a movie reboot. We've all seen this done a bazillion times – Baywatch, Spencer Confidential, countless others – what is it about long dead television shows that make feature films so appealing to reboot them? After our review of Chris Pratt's The Tomorrow War, we discuss our fascination with serial killers. True crime has exploded over the last few years between podcasts, Netflix series and documentaries, and films, but the societal obsession has always been there. What is it that makes us all so intrigued? Do we have a different response to fictional killers than we do to documentaries on real killers? Finally, we debate great movie plots that went wrong. These are ones we thought were great in concept, but the execution – whether it be in production or performances – made us a sad panda. We're looking at you, Star Wars prequels, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Lady in the Water to name a few. Discussed on this episode (0:00 – 39:35) Defunct TV Shows Needing A Movie Reboot (39:36 – 55:43) The Tomorrow War Review (55:44 – 1:30:35) Our Fascination With Serial Killers (1:30:36 - 2:01:00) Great Movie Plots Gone Wrong Troy Heinritz can also be heard on The Blacklist Exposed Please support The Hollywood Outsider and gain immediate access to bonus content, including Patreon exclusive podcast content like our Bad Movie Night by visiting Patreon.com/ TheHollywoodOutsider Be sure to join our Facebook Group Do your shopping via our Amazon Link!

Listen as we dissect and discuss the latest film in the seemingly never-ending Fast and Furious franchise. This latest installment finds Dom and his loved ones facing the dilemma of whether that means all family or just the family you've chosen. F9 finds the core "family" group – Dom (Vin Diesel), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Mia (Jordana Brewster), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel), and more – back together once again to battle imminent worldwide danger in the form of Dom's estranged younger brother, Jakob (John Cena).

Iconic Television Episodes

Lone Wolf Assassin Movies, Invincible, Nobody, Seaspiracy
Who is your favorite lone wolf assassin in film and why do we love these movies so much? Lone wolf assassin movies a.k.a. movies where one person (man or woman) is either exacting revenge by slaughtering evil doers in fantastic ways, or just does it because they are damn good at it. John Wick is the most tossed about example but really think on this: for examples, the 80s had Commando, Chuck Norris' An Eye for an Eye, the 70s had Death Wish, also films like The Bourne Identity, Kill Bill, Peppermint, The Punisher, Leon The Professional, Wanted, etc. It's a genre that has been around for decades, yet seems to always disappear for a year or two until someone – most recently John Wick and Nobody – brings it storming back to popularity. So what is it about someone murdering scores of thugs all on their own that keeps audiences coming back to the fold over and over again? Also on this episode: our news roundup including Death on the Nile is relocated to 2022 and Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard takes on Thundercats, spoiler-free reviews of Nobody and Invincible, our weekly streaming recommendation, and much more. Does Entertainment Have a "Cancel Culture" or Image Problem?
EWhere do you stand on "cancel culture" in entertainment? Is it holding celebrities accountable or are we too quick to jump? On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we're talking about the daily news section called "cancel culture" and whether entertainment has a cancel culture or image problem. To define cancel culture, cancel culture (or call-out culture) is a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles - either online on social media, in the real world, or both. Those who are subject to this ostracism are said to be "canceled." Cancel culture refers to the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive. Cancel culture is generally discussed as being performed on social media in the form of group shaming. For those at the receiving end of cancel culture, the consequences can lead to loss of reputation and income that can be hard to recover from. Gina Carano, Joss Whedon, Armie Hammer, Kevin Spacey and many more are discussed as we debate whether or not Hollywood, in fact, has a cancel culture problem. Also on this episode: spoiler-free reviews of Silk Road, Tentacles, Judas and the Black Messiah, and To All the Boys: Always and Forever, and upcoming releases. Lastly, our "CANCEL IT!" segment has returned - fitting for this episode - where each host offers an old cliché in movies or TV that REALLY needs to be canceled (in a fun way). On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we dive head first into the pastel-colored waters of the 80s with an in-depth discussion on DC's return to the world of Gal Gadot's Diana Prince, Wonder Woman 1984. This time, Diana is forced to grapple with the power of wish fulfillment as she tangles with Kristen Wiig's Barbara Minerva / Cheetah and Pedro Pascal's Maxwell Lord. TENET Review and Spoilercast | Hunter Hunter Review
In TENET, The Protagonist (John David Washington) is an agent who takes a cyanide capsule – which turns out to be a ruse – after an operation goes south, rather than turn on his government, which wins him favor with a secret organization in need of such fierce loyalty. This is where The Protagonist learns about inversion; the ability to essentially rewind time and possibly save the world from destroying itself in the past, or from the future to the past, or is the past the future? The concept is fascinating and hilariously convoluted – brace yourself for exposition as clear as a Yoda TED Talk – yet ultimately clicks as we wade into the final act. Inversion is time travel for people who love to pine on about the complications and philosophies of the topic. Like Christopher Nolan, we imagine. Now that Tenet is on home video, enjoy our review and spoilercast for Nolan's latest film. Also, Aaron reviews the new On Demand thriller, Hunter Hunter, about a family living remotely who come to fear they are being targeted by a lone wolf in the wild.

It's the 2020 HOliday Special! Every year, we love to celebrate the holiday season with our listeners, and there is no better way to do that than with our 7th Annual Holiday Special! It all started with a random idea, we were big fans of holiday specials, yet podcasts seemed to skip over the idea completely. Therefore, we decided we can do whatever we want here at The Hollywood Outsider, so let's create our own tradition and the Annual Holiday Special was born! Every year we do a little something different, so this year we're celebrating going into our 10th year as a podcast by looking back at previous holiday specials and assembling some of the best moments from every host - Aaron, John, Amanda, Brian, Scott, and Justin - for the most fantastic holiday special ever! Debating what constitutes a Christmas movie - including a little Die Hard - and specials we love, taking our Movie Battle Royale and sprinkling some Christmas magic on it for a Santa Battle Royale, Christmas cliches we love, and so much more. Warner Brothers, HBO Max, and the Future of Movie Theaters
EWhat do you think is the future of movie theaters? Originally, HBO Max made a deal with a handful of theater chains to simultaneously release Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters and on HBO Max the same day and date. Both parties agreed to it, because of the circumstances of theaters currently during the Covid-19 crisis. Last week, Warner Brothers dropped the further news that they will be debuting ALL of their 2021 releases – Matrix 4, Conjuring 3, Godzilla vs. Kong, In the Heights, and more – on HBO Max and in theaters on the exact same day and date. Thing is, theaters haven't – as of this recording – agreed to that. Also, the creatives and talent behind those films had no idea it was coming either. Christopher Nolan even lashed out and called HBO Max "the worst streaming service". Now, currently HBO Max is stating this is only for one year due to COVID, but the internet is already reacting as if this is the future of movies. Settle in and get your ears ready, because on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we're discussing the entirety of this debate. Also on this episode: Aaron's interview with a movie theater general manager on coping with the constant struggles that 2020 produced as well as his thoughts on the HBO Max news, recommendations and discussion on MANK, and our HO Teachable Minute! Ian and Eshom Nelms | Fatman
EFATMAN, newly available on demand, is a modern, gritty, almost realistic take on the Santa Claus legend, starring Mel Gibson and Marianne Jean-Babtiste as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. While Santa - aka Fatman - deals with shrinking sales due to a noticeable lack of NICE in the world, little Billy (Chance Hurstfield) is obsessed with getting everything he wants. When Santa gives Billy a lump of coal because he's been extremely naughty this year, Billy decides to hire Walton Goggins' contract killer Skinny Man to hunt down the Fatman and take him out, once and for all. It's darkly comedic, twistedly violent, extremely clever holiday thriller that features strong performances across the board. Enjoy this interview with the writers and directors of Fatman, Ian and Eshom Nelms!

Typecast Actors Who Took A Chance, Fatman, The Hillbilly Elegy, Buddy Games
Who are your favorite typecast actors that took a chance? This week, we talk about our favorite typecast actors that branched outside their norm. A typecast actor is one who becomes strongly identified with a specific character, one or more particular roles, or characters having the same traits or coming from the same social or ethnic groups. For example, if you think of Jason Statham's acting career, you'd probably think of him as the straight-faced action-movie killer. However, he took a chance in the movie Spy where he played a humorous character. Adam Sandler is famously known for his man-child characters, yet with Uncut Gems, he proved yet again there are many layers wrapped into the Sandman. Others might include Robin Williams, Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, etc. Also on this episode: our HOT TAKE game where a host takes a movie that is universally loathed but that host loves it, spoiler-free reviews of The Christmas Chronicles 2, Buddy Games, The Hillbilly Elegy, and Fatman; a news roundup, new releases, and our HO Teachable Minute! Presidents in Entertainment and Sean Connery
Who is your favorite President in movies or TV? On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we first take a look back at the legacy of Sir Thomas Sean Connery. Born on August 25,1930, Connery began acting in the '50s before he first launched to fame as James Bond in Dr. No. He went on to break away from Bond in films like Marnie and Robin and Marian, and then did a lot of ensembles and supporting roles in the 70s and 80s including The Untouchables (which is won an Oscar for), Highlander, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. His career continued a box office resurgence as films like The Hunt for Red October, The Rock, Dragonheart, and Entrapment kept him on the A-list until he retired after A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003. He also won American Film Institutes Lifetime Achievement award in 2006. We then shift over to Presidents in Entertainment. Whether it be from film or television, the greatest presidents in entertainment are - just like with any election - subject to personal tastes. Independence Day, 24, The West Wing, entertainment is full of fantastic representations of the United States Presidency. We discuss what constitutes being "presidential", how much movies and TV influences are opinion on actual presidents, and even play a few games with both real and fictional presidents. Discussed on this episode (0:00 – 26:24) Opening | Sir Sean Connery (26:25 – 58:46) From The Outside In: Presidents in Entertainment (58:47 – 1:05:00) Recommendations | Closing | HO Teachable Minute Please support The Hollywood Outsider and gain immediate access to bonus content, including Patreon exclusive podcast content, by visiting Patreon.com/ TheHollywoodOutsider Be sure to join our Facebook Group Do your shopping via our Amazon Link!

John Maggio | HBO's The Perfect Weapon (2020)
Director John Maggio discusses his career and the timeliness of his latest film, The Perfect Weapon, centered around the growing use of cyberterrorism as the preferred warfare of the modern age. Maggio elaborates on many of the themes included in the film, such as the expansion of 5G and "Perception Hacks", as well as the challenges in bringing this riveting film to life. This is a fascinating interview every person needs to hear. Based on a best-selling book by New York Times national security correspondent David E. Sanger, The Perfect Weapon explores the rise of cyber conflict as the primary way nations now compete with and sabotage one another. Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker John Maggio (Panic: The Untold Story of the 2008 Financial Crisis) and featuring interviews with top military, intelligence, and political officials on the frontlines of cyberterrorism, the documentary brings to light the combatants and innocent victims caught in the crosshairs of a hidden war that has been going on for decades — a war that America started, but has no idea how to finish. - HBO The Perfect Weapon is now available on HBO and streaming on HBO Max.
