On this compilation episode, we discuss great movie plots gone wrong, our fascination with serial killers, defunct TV shows in need of a movie reboot, and Amazon Prime's The Tomorrow War. First up are those defunct TV shows that are completely off-air and that we believe deserve a movie reboot. We've all seen this done a bazillion times – Baywatch, Spencer Confidential, countless others – what is it about long dead television shows that make feature films so appealing to reboot them? After our review of Chris Pratt's The Tomorrow War, we discuss our fascination with serial killers. True crime has exploded over the last few years between podcasts, Netflix series and documentaries, and films, but the societal obsession has always been there. What is it that makes us all so intrigued? Do we have a different response to fictional killers than we do to documentaries on real killers? Finally, we debate great movie plots that went wrong. These are ones we thought were great in concept, but the execution – whether it be in production or performances – made us a sad panda. Who is your favorite lone wolf assassin in film and why do we love these movies so much? Lone wolf assassin movies a.k.a. movies where one person (man or woman) is either exacting revenge by slaughtering evil doers in fantastic ways, or just does it because they are damn good at it. The South by Southwest Festival is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Every year, thousands of fans arrive in downtown Austin, TX to partake in a couple of weeks of great music, technology, and film. With Zack Snyder's Justice League released to the world, what do you think of his vision? Determined to ensure Superman's ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne aligns forces with Diana Prince with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. Where do you stand on "cancel culture" in entertainment? Is it holding celebrities accountable or are we too quick to jump? To define cancel culture, cancel culture (or call-out culture) is a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles - either online on social media, in the real world, or both. Those who are subject to this ostracism are said to be "canceled." Cancel culture refers to the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive. Cancel culture is generally discussed as being performed on social media in the form of group shaming. For those at the receiving end of cancel culture, the consequences can lead to loss of reputation and income that can be hard to recover from. In TENET, The Protagonist (John David Washington) is an agent who takes a cyanide capsule – which turns out to be a ruse – after an operation goes south, rather than turn on his government, which wins him favor with a secret organization in need of such fierce loyalty. This is where The Protagonist learns about inversion; the ability to essentially rewind time and possibly save the world from destroying itself in the past, or from the future to the past, or is the past the future? The concept is fascinating and hilariously convoluted – brace yourself for exposition as clear as a Yoda TED Talk – yet ultimately clicks as we wade into the final act. Inversion is time travel for people who love to pine on about the complications and philosophies of the topic. Like Christopher Nolan, we imagine. What do you think is the future of movie theaters? Originally, HBO Max made a deal with a handful of theater chains to simultaneously release Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters and on HBO Max the same day and date. Both parties agreed to it, because of the circumstances of theaters currently during the Covid-19 crisis. Last week, Warner Brothers dropped the further news that they will be debuting ALL of their 2021 releases – Matrix 4, Conjuring 3, Godzilla vs. Kong, In the Heights, and more – on HBO Max and in theaters on the exact same day and date. Thing is, theaters haven't – as of this recording – agreed to that. Also, the creatives and talent behind those films had no idea it was coming either. Christopher Nolan even lashed out and called HBO Max "the worst streaming service". Now, currently HBO Max is stating this is only for one year due to COVID, but the internet is already reacting as if this is the future of movies. FATMAN, newly available on demand, is a modern, gritty, almost realistic take on the Santa Claus legend, starring Mel Gibson and Marianne Jean-Babtiste as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. While Santa - aka Fatman - deals with shrinking sales due to a noticeable lack of NICE in the world, little Billy (Chance Hurstfield) is obsessed with getting everything he wants. When Santa gives Billy a lump of coal because he's been extremely naughty this year, Billy decides to hire Walton Goggins' contract killer Skinny Man to hunt down the Fatman and take him out, once and for all. It's darkly comedic, twistedly violent, extremely clever holiday thriller that features strong performances across the board. Who are your favorite typecast actors that took a chance? This week, we talk about our favorite typecast actors that branched outside their norm. A typecast actor is one who becomes strongly identified with a specific character, one or more particular roles, or characters having the same traits or coming from the same social or ethnic groups. For example, if you think of Jason Statham's acting career, you'd probably think of him as the straight-faced action-movie killer. However, he took a chance in the movie Spy where he played a humorous character. Adam Sandler is famously known for his man-child characters, yet with Uncut Gems, he proved yet again there are many layers wrapped into the Sandman. Who is your favorite President in movies or TV? On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we first take a look back at the legacy of Sir Thomas Sean Connery. Born on August 25,1930, Connery began acting in the '50s before he first launched to fame as James Bond in Dr. No. He went on to break away from Bond in films like Marnie and Robin and Marian, and then did a lot of ensembles and supporting roles in the 70s and 80s including The Untouchables (which is won an Oscar for), Highlander, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. His career continued a box office resurgence as films like The Hunt for Red October, The Rock, Dragonheart, and Entrapment kept him on the A-list until he retired after A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003. He also won American Film Institutes Lifetime Achievement award in 2006. We then shift over to Presidents in Entertainment. Whether it be from film or television, the greatest presidents in entertainment are - just like with any election - subject to personal tastes.
