PETA Interview and Animals in Entertainment

On this special episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we discuss animals in entertainment with none other than PETA, the organization formally known as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. A while back we did a segment on a horse that passed away on the set of Amazon Prime's The Rings of Power, reportedly due to cardiac arrest. We made our comments, and riffed on PETA's condemnation of the death. Well PETA heard this segment and reached out to us with an offer: let's have an honest discussion about animals in entertainment with PETA on your podcast. So, Aaron and John sat down with Courtney Penley, PETA's Coordinator of Animals in TV and Film to discuss what it is that PETA wants Hollywood to do and what that means for the entertainment industry as a whole, as well as PETA's activism as a whole. So you might walk into this interview with preconceived notions, maybe you support PETA or perhaps you struggle with how they convey their message. We would only ask that you approach this conversation as a whole with an open mind on all sides of these issue, and then listen as all of our hosts join up on the other side of this to discuss our thoughts on the interview as a whole. Discussed on this episode: (0:00 – 47:09) The PETA Interview with PETA Film & TV Production Coordinator, Courtney Penley (47:10 – 1:41:54) Discussion on PETA, the Interview, and Animals in Entertainment Contact PETA to report any questionable animal issues at 323-210-2233 Please support The Hollywood Outsider and gain immediate access to bonus content, including Patreon exclusive podcast content like our Bad Movie Night by visiting Patreon.com/ TheHollywoodOutsider Be sure to join our Facebook Group Follow us on Twitter @BuyPopcorn

Controversy, Multiverses, 80s Movie Soundtracks | The Best of 2022

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, it's the Best of 2022 as we assemble our most popular topics of 2022 in ONE episode: Controversy, Multiverses, and 80s Movie Soundtracks! First up, we decided it was time to get a bit controversial and weigh in on a few of our unpopular opinions or theories in entertainment news. Is Wes Anderson vastly overrated? Should Star Wars have ended with Return of the Jedi? Is E.T. really an allegory for something deeper, perhaps a love story? All of these and more are discussed and probed as The Hollywood Outsider gets controversial. Then we're taking a journey through the multiverse. Specifically, the concept of multiverses as a storytelling device. While many might think this starts and ends with Marvel's recent slate of films including Spider-Man: No Way Home, in fact, multiverses have been around for decades in various forms. As this backdrop of storytelling explodes in popularity, we take a look at it and discuss if it has a long-term future in modern filmmaking. We conclude with our most popular topic of the year as we decided to look back at the original for inspiration and devote our topic to 80s movie soundtracks! Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, Purple Rain, The Blues Brothers, the list goes on and on and on. What was your favorite soundtrack from the 80s era? Discussed on this episode (0:00 – 49:16) Let's Get Controversial (49:17 – 1:13:34) Journey Through the Multiverse (1:13:35 – 2:05:12) 80s Movie Soundtracks Please support The Hollywood Outsider and gain immediate access to bonus content, including Patreon exclusive podcast content like our Bad Movie Night by visiting Patreon.com/ TheHollywoodOutsider Be sure to join our Facebook Group

The 2022 Holiday Special | A Hollywood Outsider Christmas

Every year, we love to celebrate the holiday season with our listeners, and there is no better way to do that than with our annual Holiday Special! It all started 8 years ago with a random idea: we were big fans of holiday specials, yet podcasts seemed to skip over the idea completely. Therefore, we decided we can do whatever we want here at The Hollywood Outsider, so let's create our own tradition and the Annual Holiday Special was born! Every year we rekindle the past while adding a little something new, and assembling some of the best moments from every host - Aaron, John, Amanda, Brian, Scott, and Justin - for the most fantastic holiday special ever! Debating what constitutes a Christmas movie and specials we love, what makes for a great Christmas movie, Christmas cliches we love, plus new segments where we review Violent Night and bring back Recasting the Classics with a look at how we would remake National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation! That's not all, oh no. The Christmas spirit kicks into overdrive as we open up and share our personal memories of the holiday season, stories that remind us of Christmas. And no holiday special would be complete without a visit from the big man himself, so get ready for as much St. Nick as legally allowed as Santa Claus drops by the studio to tell us just how naughty or nice we are, all throughout the episode! With a special game from Amanda, Santa in his sleigh, John's obsession with puppets, Scott's first Christmas Poem, and a lot of fun for everyone – This is the one podcast you don't want to miss this holiday season! Changing the Tone in Movies or TV and Thor: Love and Thunder

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, with Thor: Love and Thunder blowing up theaters, we decided to take a look at movies or TV that changed their tone. Timeless Movies, Iconic TV Episodes, and Villain Team-Up Battle Royale

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we debate timeless movies, iconic TV episodes, and debate villain team-ups in a Battle Royale! Our Movie Battle Royale takes on a new form as each host forms a Suicide Squad of their own, 4 villains teaming up to defeat Thanos. Which combination wins the battle? Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park. These are some of the first films you think of when you debate movies that have stood up to the trials of time. On this segment, we are discussing timeless movies. Those films that still hold up decades later, against modern effects and scrutiny. These aren't based on greatness or classic status, these are decided on by their ability to almost look and feel the same to you now as they did when you first saw them. Iconic is typically defined as widely recognized and well-established. Iconic episodes of television though are far and few between, because typically a series can only have one that would be called iconic, and how few episodes of any TV show are actually iconic? On this segment we discuss the very nature of reaching iconic status, as well as what we would define as iconic television episodes. Sure, the usual suspects arrive in the form of Lost or Game of Thrones, but a few surprises await as well during an engaging discussion on a topic most of us know far more about than we realize.
