EThis week we get to speak with Sarah Williams, an engineer who shares with us her journey in navigating being a single mom, dealing with mom guilt, and being a leader (even if you find it hard to stand up and shout that's what you are).Sarah shares her experiences with finding her village and the path that led her from the UK to Colorado and a few stops inbetween. Her powerful and inspiring insights are truly eye-opening and give an incredible perspective on how to lead in STEM while managing the responsibilities of motherhood and life.Sarah definitely has a case of imposter syndrome, both in her new job and being asked to do this podcast with stories from such strong, accomplished, and brave women. She realizes that no matter where you are in life or what journey you’ve been on, we all have so much in common, and it’s important to share the good and the bad and realize we are not alone.Sarah grew up in the UK, graduated from the University of Liverpool as an engineer, and went straight into a male-dominated engineering career 20-something years ago. She’s remained in the same industry after moving to the US 15 years ago.Sarah sits on the board of a couple of committees, including Women’s Leadership and Women in STEM, which is trying to sustain and grow the representation of women in her industry and encourage and mentor young engineers starting out in their careers. She is a single mum of 2 soccer and climbing crazy boys and a loopy dog, so juggling life is never dull. Sarah finds peace in the mountains, whether hiking or skiing, running with friends, getting her hands dirty in clay, and cooking with weird and wonderful ingredients. Fun fact, she has a certificate in entomophagy - eating insects 😆Thanks for tuning in and listening to Sarah's story and insights. It's a great reminder of the power of community and the importance of supporting one another.Connect with Sarah:http://linkedin.com/in/sarah-williams-90192845Book that was mentioned:Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for MenHow to connect with Dianewww.thefireinsideher.com [email protected] Instagram@TheRealFireInHer LinkedInwww.linkedin.com/in/dianeschroeder5/Are you excited to get copy of the Self Care Audio download that Diane mentioned? You can get that HERE –TheFireInsideHer.com/audioIf you enjoyed this episode, take a minute and share it with someone you know who will find value in it as well. S2 Ep 14The Complexity of Mothers and Daughters
EThis is a Heartfelt Mother-Daughter Podcast Episode You Don't Want to Miss! You're going to love the latest episode of The Fire Inside Her where Diane sits down for a second time to interview her mother Billie and they take some time to unpack a bit of their challenges and struggles, and how hard it can be for mothers and daughters to get along. In this heartfelt episode, it's valuable to take a peek into someone else's life as the mother and daughter duo share their personal stories about their experiences, miscommunications, and ways they both learned to work and grow through them.If you would like to listen in on the first episode that Diane and Billie shared you can check it out at https://TheFireInsideHer.com/podcast/8 .How to connect with Dianewww.thefireinsideher.com [email protected] Instagram@TheRealFireInHer LinkedInwww.linkedin.com/in/dianeschroeder5/Are you excited to get copy of the Self Care Audio download that Diane mentioned? You can get that HERE –TheFireInsideHer.com/audioIf you enjoyed this episode, take a minute and share it with someone you know who will find value in it as well. S2 Ep 13Using Tarot as a Tool for Self-Care
EYou've probably heard of Tarot cards, but fewer people are familiar with their use, or may be more familiar with the preconceived notion that these cards cast in stone a, potentially foreboding, future path. In today’s conversation, we get to peel back a little of the mystery to talk about ways that Tarot serves as a guide or tool. You’ll also learn a little about how our host, Diane, incorporates them into her life as well as learning abou the unique way today’s guest uses them in her work with clients.Gavie Remaly is the Tarot Guide at Luxi Enchanted and she leads overwhelmed women seeking boundaries in identifying the boundaries they need and helps them establish a plan to enforce them. S2 Ep 12Being an Introvert is a Super Power
EHave you ever noticed that the world often assumes most of us are extroverts? That some demands placed on us can be extra taxing for an introvert? So much so that it may take a bit of deciphering to figure out that playing an extravert for much of your life can be part of why things are out of alignment.Today Jeannie Scott joins us for a valuable conversation about being an introvert in an extroverted world. From reflecting on how introverts show up and contribute differently (and the value added by this) to looking at the importance of introverted voices in leadership, they cover a lot of ground. If you stick around to the end, you even get the inside scoop on some great plays to keep your eye out for! Jeannie is an actor, empowerment coach, and breathwork facilitator. As an actor, Jeannie understands what it is to be exhausted and hide in an industry built for extroverts. For years, she hid behind an extroverted mask, regularly burning out, and feeling lost and stuck in cycles of self-sabotage. She used mindset and embodiment tools to change her own life, and now she helps others do the same. She is on a mission to empower and amplify female introverted voices in traditionally extroverted spaces, so they can create confidence in their way and make an impact without burning out. This honest, bare conversation highlights the value of taking time to recharge and observe the bigger picture, which is a natural gift for introverts.Connect with Jeannie:Free guide "Introvert Power Save Mode: 4 Ways to Hold onto Your Energy in a World Built for Extroverts": https://subscribepage.com/powersavemode Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeannie_coaching/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jeanniescottcoachingBlog: https://www.jeanniescottcoaching.com/blog Connect with Diane:Get a copy of the Self Care Audio download Diane mentioned: https://thefireinsideher.com/audio/ Website: https://www.thefireinsideher.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thefireinher/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dianeschroeder5/ Resource mentioned:Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain, et al.: https://www.amazon.com/Quiet-Power-Introverts-World-Talking/dp/0307352153

S2 Ep 11Healing Trauma as A Parent, Survivor, and Helper
ETrauma can take on many forms. Today's guest was a classroom student of trauma before life became her teacher, and is now using her lessons to be in service of others. A life-changing accident in 2011 showed her the physical effects of trauma, but her journey as an adoptive parent had already introduced the complexities of trauma into her family's home years before this. Her reckoning with the circumstances that came into her life and the growth and journeys that continue to flow from them are what we dive into today. Chris' connection to The Fire Inside Her is something she mentions. That burning perseverance is part of what makes her story so compelling and something you're going to want to hear more about.Chris Prange-Morgan, MA, MSW, considers herself a student of all types of trauma. Before becoming a parent to her children, Prange-Morgan worked for more than ten years as a mental health professional and social worker with adults in the criminal justice system. She has a master’s degree in social work from Loyola University Chicago, a certificate of advanced graduate study in pastoral counseling from Neuman College, and a master of arts in religious studies from Cardinal Stritch University. Prange-Morgan has sought to better understand collective and generational trauma and its effect on individuals after she suffered a life-changing accident in 2011, becoming a trauma survivor herself. Her story has been featured on The Today Show, The Trauma Therapist Project, CBS, Milwaukee Magazine, The Institute for Healthcare Improvement website, The No Barriers Podcast, and The Conversation Project. Her articles have appeared in many publications, including Psychology Today, The Huffpost, Able Outdoors, Tiny Buddha, and Living With Amplitude Magazine. S1 Ep 8It's Never Too Late for Self-Care
EEach of us will experience a lot of transitions as we move through life. We will find ourselves at multiple crossroads trying to discover the best way to adapt and advance into our next phase.Billie Schroeder's husband passed away just as everyone moved into quarantine because of the Covid-19 pandemic. She had married young and never lived alone. Now, she was not only living alone for the first time, but also during a time of mandated separation and isolation. She was also in her late seventies. Her story may not be what you would expect from where it begins. It seems that finding ourselves, caring for ourselves, finding our voice, and finding our joy can happen at any age. So settle in for a wonderful conversation that will help you see that growth doesn’t have to stop, that sometimes self-care is an important tool at any stage and age, and that people’s capacity may surprise you. The best part of this episode- Billie is Diane's mother. So there is a bit of laughter, some moments of insight, and some extra layers and depth that you will really enjoy. Including the lesson that showing up and letting others take their path really is a good strategy. You can see how well it worked in Billie’s parenting, and in her finding her own way.Thank you for being part of The Fire Inside Her community and continuing on this adventure of meeting the incredible people that are already at Diane's table and part of her journey to authenticity. S1 Ep 7Work Culture Currency
EIt's March Madness, so today's episode opens with some reflecting on Diane's connection to this annual college basketball tradition, and some valuable lessons on life, culture, and leadership from one of college basketball's greats, Coach Wooden.Work culture, and its importance to an agency, seen as work culture currency, is the focus of this episode. The Fire Insider Her has a returning guest with Trish Connolly, whom some of you may remember from episode 2. She and Diane offer a lot of wisdom and reflection on the challenging, yet extremely important, work of addressing culture within organizations. They explain the difference between a technical problem and an adaptive challenge, and the fact you can't resolve an adaptive challenge in the same straightforward manner you might a technical problem. No matter how much we try to simplify it or how much we like checklists. This conversation offers insight on where to put your focus when you are trying to support positive change, a lens that helps us all be on the same page when thinking about diversity, a useful perspective on the importance of belonging in DEI work, and an awareness that agency organizational culture is always the foundation and first step. They also discuss the important role that everyone plays in organizational culture, which really hits home with a poignant story Trish shares of a colleague.Resources mentioned in today's episode:Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Successhttps://www.thewoodeneffect.com/pyramid-of-success/Did you enjoy today's conversation with Trish Connolly? S1 Ep 5Self-Care Strategies for Industrious Women
EBy now we’ve all heard of self-care. It’s something we’ve talked about often in the last four episodes of this podcast. Today’s conversation considers that even though we’ve heard of it, are aware of it, and admit that we need it; it can still be difficult to actually do it. Dr. Colleen Foster even points out that for industrious humans, it’s something we may have to schedule in time for. Our self-care isn’t something we can easily fit in. There is just so much that we want to accomplish every day that it falls off the list. Especially, when we have a hard time moving ourselves to a place of prominence. The conversation covers a lot. We touch on invisible work, communicating upsetting news, and the importance of trust in leading teams. It’s a valuable conversation you are going to be glad you were part of, and take a lot away from. Dr. Colleen Foster is an emergency room physician and a medical director. Dr. Foster grew up in northern Indiana and attended college at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science. She attended medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, graduating AOA with an emphasis in medical care for the underserved. She completed residency training at Denver Health in emergency medicine. Since completing her training, she has worked in emergency departments in the Denver Metro and Boulder area. She currently serves as the Medical Director for Louisville Fire, an Associate Medical Director for North Metro Fire, and a Physician Advisor for the Louisville Police Department and West Metro SWAT team. Besides her professional activities, she is a mom to two small boys, the wife to an entrepreneur, and an aspiring regenerative farmer. S1 Ep 4Healing Power of Storytelling w/Naomi Marquez and Mandi Benecke
EStorytelling is a powerful medium to connect with others. It helps us to know that we aren’t alone in this human experience. The more stories we hear, the more we understand that we all have stories. The more we accept those stories make us who we are. Listening to and understanding those stories better connects us. As we further explore community and collaboration, you get to meet two women who are blazing ahead on the podcasting path with a podcast focused on sharing stories. They’ve also built a community, value authenticity, and are very much in alignment with what we focus on here. Their podcast was the first that Diane Schroeder appeared as a guest on, and now, The Fire Inside Her is the first podcast that they are joining as guests because collaboration builds us all up and brings us all together. In today’s conversation, we speak a lot about authenticity, about what community means. We touch on the stories that make us who we are and get vulnerable about the experiences that made an impact. Mandi and Naomi also touch on some stories and experiences they’ve gained from over two years of podcasting together and the many guests they’ve interviewed.Naomi Marquez and Mandi Benecke have been friends for almost 20 years. They’ve been together through the highs and lows of their 20s, 30s, and 40s. After each of them experienced serious health events, they realized how precious life really is and that no matter how grand our picket fences are, each of us has a story to tell and work to be done beyond those picket fences. It was this realization that gave them the idea to launch a platform for those who identify as women to come together as a community and to provide a platform to lift their voices.Naomi and Mandi believe that through authenticity, vulnerability, connection, and community, we can thrive together. Beyond Picket Fences started as a podcast and has grown to a business providing resources and events for women to share their stories and connect. How to connect with Mandi & Naomi:https://bpfences.comhttps://www.facebook.com/bpfencespodcasthttps://www.instagram.com/bpfenceshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPMI2eihdeH8c5LcmKXLJxAHow to connect with Diane:www.thefireinsideher.com [email protected] Instagram@TheRealFireInHer LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/in/dianeschroeder5/Are you excited toget a copy of the Self Care Audio download that Dianementioned? You can get that HERE -TheFireInsideHer.com/audio

S1 Ep 3Courageous Conversations & The Journey of Authentic Friendship
EDiane’s father told her a person could count their true friends on one hand and probably have some fingers left over, of course, with most advice that her dad gave her growing up, she didn't think that was true. Over the years, as she looked back on her friendships- she realized he was right. It’s helped her to come to learn the importance of those friendships. The people that you can be authentic with, the ones that you can have courageous conversations with, that will be honest with you (even when it stings a little), are the most valuable connections you can strive for.Today on The Fire Inside Her, you get to meet one of Diane’s oldest and dearest friends, whom she would truly place in the “ride or die” category. As they chat, you will learn more about where they grew up, the things they’ve been through together, and some things they have learned to value in their friendship. You will also get glimpses of a woman Diane values and admires, partially because of her ability to show up bravely and be herself. They touch on the importance of who you have at your table, the moments you need to value as they occur (because they quickly slip by), and what makes a community. They reflect a bit on parenting, the need to give back, the ways we define ourselves, and how to navigate the seasons of our lives. They even take small glances at trauma and privilege two very different actors that can affect us in ways we often don’t recognize. There is much to be gained by joining this valuable conversation. A little more about Victoria:Victoria Deaser is a 46 year old Latina from Denver. Married 23 years, mother to 3 children, raised by strong women, college educated, probation officer for 20 years, dedicated to building an inclusive society where all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. S1 Ep 2Connection, Community, & Collaboration
EConnection is something we seek from the time we are children.Building friendships and finding connection is something that can seem harder as we get older, rather than easier. Yet, connection, community, and collaboration are things we all need. Trish and Diane found commonality in their roles as leaders in the fire service. With less than 1% of women occupying the roles they are in, it was valuable to find someone else with this shared experience The two have built a solid connection over time, and in this episode reflect some on how they have cultivated and found value in this relationship. They also touch on the journey of a leader and the importance of the community you create that can help to hold you up when times are challenging. They touch on some leaders they look up to, share some challenging experiences they have been through, and share the ways they have grown. Trish says it best, she is a ‘perfectly imperfect’ leader, and the most important ingredient is to always be authentic and embrace the uniqueness that you bring to the table and to the position.Trish Connolly lives in Bend, Oregon, with her husband, son, and highly anxious dog- Duncan. She loves all outdoor activities, including mountain hikes, snowboarding, and mountain biking. S1 Ep 1Taking a Leap of Faith
EFaith is Diane Schroeder's word. In this episode we get to meet one of her friends who helped her find her way back to it when she hit a pothole on her journey to authenticity. Throughout the first season of The Fire Inside Her podcast you'll get a unique opportunity to meet some of the individuals who make up Diane's inner circle and have been an integral part of her leadership path, her finding space to be more authentic, and her venture towards launching this podcast. From learning more about the connective power of breaking bread, the questions around what you can get out of therapy, examples of self care, the sharing of powerful insight moments about high achievers needing help too, and the power of female friendship and the struggles and gifts of good female leadership. There is much to gain in this episode as you get a chance to get to know Diane a little better and meet one of the bad ass women who embodies the leadership, community, and authenticity that The Fire Inside Her is all about.
