S1 Ep 86What other OM patients should know - a story w/ Heather M.

Join A Cure in Sight to interview guest, Heather McMenamin, a patient originally from England, currently living in Houston, TX, and diagnosed with ocular melanoma in 2021. “I went for my annual eye exam 9-22-21, (because of COVID it was actually 18 months since my previous eye exam, normally done every year). I was asymptomatic and more concerned about what new frame I might pick out. The doctor was quite concerned about the large mass in my left eye and said I needed to see a retina specialist STAT. I was able to get an appointment for the next morning at which time the doctor dilated my eyes and very quickly said I needed to see an Ocular Oncologist - he did not give me a diagnosis but at this point I knew it was serious. I was referred to Dr. Amy Schefler and got an appointment 9-29-21. After hours of testing she diagnosed me with Uveal Melanoma. I had Brachytherapy 11-01-21, plaque was in for 7 days. That was an odd experience to look back on. I just had my 2nd year anniversary and so far no sign of METS, next scan 10-19-23 and I began eye injections last month as I have signs of retinopathy.” If you take anything from Heather’s episode, we hope you glean that knowledge is so empowering as a patient, and that the knowledge you share with others to help spread awareness makes such a key difference. You can find Heather on facebook, and also in the Houston area if you head to the Houston 5K coming up on Dec 10th! Her favorite song referenced in this episode is “Take Me Home Country Roads.” ANNOUNCEMENTS: 5K SITES ARE OPEN FOR REGISTRATION NEAR YOU! Start your team and bring your community to get involved! S1 Ep 82E82: Can Nutrition Make a Difference? Guest Patricia Daly, Nutritional Therapist

Join A Cure in Sight as we interview Patricia Daly, an OM survivor and nutritional therapist. She shares her personal journey with ocular melanoma, including a recurrence of her tumor in her eye and local orbital spread, and how she began a journey to healing her body’s metabolic system, one small step at a time. “Patricia was diagnosed with a 15.2-mm large choroidal melanoma in 2008. Following plaque radiotherapy under Professor Bertil Damato in Liverpool, she responded well to the treatment but not even two years later suffered a recurrence. The original tumour now measured 18.3mm and there was also local spread with an extraocular tumour of 6.2mm, called "extraocular extension" (stage T4e). Patricia was treated with proton beam therapy in Clatterbridge. Another two years on, in 2012, there was renewed tumour activity and excessive angiogenesis- and this was the moment she opted out of further treatment and embarked on a metabolic health journey, which is an ongoing process for her. Patricia Daly is an experienced and internationally recognized nutritional therapist (MSc, dipNT, mBANT, rCNHC) specializing in the personalized application of ketogenic metabolic therapies for recovery from chronic health challenges. She credits the ketogenic lifestyle for successfully quieting an aggressive eye tumour she was diagnosed with fifteen years ago. In 2021, she completed her MSc degree in "Advanced Nutrition in Research and Practice" at Middlesex University in London. Patricia is co-author of The Ketogenic Kitchen, a best-selling cookbook that includes meal plans for therapeutic carbohydrate restriction. Born in Switzerland and living in Ireland, Patricia is a proud founding and advisory member of the European Keto Live Center based in Switzerland. She regularly speaks at international conferences and has established herself as one of the leading practitioners in the field of metabolic therapies. Nothing makes her prouder than witnessing her clients transform from bystanders to active and empowered participants on their health journey." S1 Ep 80E80: Worrying didn’t work: An OM Story, Guest Ellie Levine

After seeing her article featured last week, we had to get this omie on the podcast! Tune in to hear from Ellie sharing her story: "I have to believe that going through all of this at a young age has happened for a reason. I’m not someone who blindly believes God has a plan for everything, but in my case, I can’t help but recognize that He’s taught me a lesson. Spending your whole life worrying about what has happened, what will happen, what might happen, is a waste of time. I am proof that worrying does not work! I worried my whole life that I would get cancer. And guess what? It didn’t stop me from getting it." LINK TO ARTICLE Summary of her diagnosis: Diagnosed with choroidal (retina) melanoma in November, 2022. Had surgery in Boston, MA to implant a tantalum ring in my eye, at the end of November. Treated with proton beam radiation in Boston, MA in December. Follow-ups show shrinkage in the tumor. Slowly losing some peripheral eyesight. No sign of metastasis as of fall 2023. Of those diagnosed, children and minority communities (people of color, indigenous peoples, etc.) make up an even smaller percentage of the patient population. Dr. Lauren Dalvin and Dr. Justin Moser, who attended medical school together, were part of a discussion on the importance of awareness for rare diseases, and how they got involved in the work of ocular melanoma specifically. Dr. Justin Moser is a medical oncologist and hematologist and associate clinical investigator at HonorHealth Research Institute. How do you see the rare disease landscape changing in the future? What are registries and biobanks? Why are they important for rare diseases? PLUG FOR INSIGHT REGISTRY , living library, what is a bio bank? How often do you treat someone in a minatory group (like children, people of color, potential obstacles they face)? How do you reassure a patient with rare diseases that they will receive good care in your practice? This webinar is made possible by contributions from the EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases. S1 Ep 59E59: RARE² Panel Interview - Kenny, Yvonne, Presley

Join A Cure in Sight to briefly interview Yvonne, Presley, and Kenny; patients who are some of the “rare among the rare” or the RARE² in honor of Rare Disease Day. Yvonne, Presley, and Kenny show their stripes by expressing what navigating their journey with ocular melanoma has looked like–and how that has differed from the mainstream community. Ocular melanoma is most commonly found in fair skinned, light eyed males over the age of 50 according to most statistics found online. These 3 patients demonstrate the statistics just don’t accurately depict those in our community who are here, living with OM, and who don’t “fit the mold” of the most common demographic diagnosed. Meet Yvonne Loggins-Colemen, diagnosed in 2020 with ocular melanoma by sheer chance; rare among the rare as a woman of African American descent. Meet Presley Jackson, diagnosed at the age of 13 with ocular melanoma, experiencing childhood eye cancer, and adjusting to the loss of vision and a great deal of uncertainty, while living as full of a life as a teen as he possibly can. Meet Kenny Rains, diagnosed at the age of 29, far younger than most, and tackling life with new passion and perspective after navigating an immense mental health struggle that his diagnosis triggered.
