S1 Ep 90Palliative v Hospice Care - guest, Suzanne Obrien
Join A Cure in Sight, an ocular melanoma foundation, to interview Suzanne O'brien on the topic of Palliative v. Hospice care. Suzanne B. O’Brien RN is the Founder & CEO of Doulagivers Institute. Her life's mission is to increase the availability and access to high quality end of life education and care for patients and families throughout the world. Suzanne has developed free resources and trainings for family caregivers and practitioners from her firsthand experience working at the bedside of over 1,000 end of life patients as a hospice nurse and palliative care professional. Doulagivers Institute was formed in 2012 by Suzanne after she was moved to action by what she witnessed in the homes of her dying patients as a hospice nurse - both the beautiful, empowering deaths that she feels every person has a right to experience and the heartbreaking, traumatic ones that she recognized were the reality for far too many. Improving end of life outcomes for all members of the community through education and advocacy, as well as increasing satisfaction with the home hospice care experience is the ultimate goal of Doulagivers Institute. Suzanne is a registered nurse and has been awarded “Worldwide Leader in Healthcare” by the International Nurses Association for creating Doulagivers Institute. She has worked directly at the bedside of over one thousand end of life patients as a hospice and oncology nurse. Suzanne has a degree in Transpersonal Counseling and Spiritual Ministry from (AIWP) in Los Alamitos, CA and was named Humanitarian Ambassador for Oprah Magazine in 2019 for her work to bring peace and comfort to those facing the end of life around the world. S1 Ep 86What other OM patients should know - a story w/ Heather M.
Join A Cure in Sight to interview guest, Heather McMenamin, a patient originally from England, currently living in Houston, TX, and diagnosed with ocular melanoma in 2021. “I went for my annual eye exam 9-22-21, (because of COVID it was actually 18 months since my previous eye exam, normally done every year). I was asymptomatic and more concerned about what new frame I might pick out. The doctor was quite concerned about the large mass in my left eye and said I needed to see a retina specialist STAT. I was able to get an appointment for the next morning at which time the doctor dilated my eyes and very quickly said I needed to see an Ocular Oncologist - he did not give me a diagnosis but at this point I knew it was serious. I was referred to Dr. Amy Schefler and got an appointment 9-29-21. After hours of testing she diagnosed me with Uveal Melanoma. I had Brachytherapy 11-01-21, plaque was in for 7 days. That was an odd experience to look back on. I just had my 2nd year anniversary and so far no sign of METS, next scan 10-19-23 and I began eye injections last month as I have signs of retinopathy.” If you take anything from Heather’s episode, we hope you glean that knowledge is so empowering as a patient, and that the knowledge you share with others to help spread awareness makes such a key difference. You can find Heather on facebook, and also in the Houston area if you head to the Houston 5K coming up on Dec 10th! Her favorite song referenced in this episode is “Take Me Home Country Roads.” ANNOUNCEMENTS: 5K SITES ARE OPEN FOR REGISTRATION NEAR YOU! Start your team and bring your community to get involved! S1 Ep 82E82: Can Nutrition Make a Difference? Guest Patricia Daly, Nutritional Therapist
Join A Cure in Sight as we interview Patricia Daly, an OM survivor and nutritional therapist. She shares her personal journey with ocular melanoma, including a recurrence of her tumor in her eye and local orbital spread, and how she began a journey to healing her body’s metabolic system, one small step at a time. “Patricia was diagnosed with a 15.2-mm large choroidal melanoma in 2008. Following plaque radiotherapy under Professor Bertil Damato in Liverpool, she responded well to the treatment but not even two years later suffered a recurrence. The original tumour now measured 18.3mm and there was also local spread with an extraocular tumour of 6.2mm, called "extraocular extension" (stage T4e). Patricia was treated with proton beam therapy in Clatterbridge. Another two years on, in 2012, there was renewed tumour activity and excessive angiogenesis- and this was the moment she opted out of further treatment and embarked on a metabolic health journey, which is an ongoing process for her. Patricia Daly is an experienced and internationally recognized nutritional therapist (MSc, dipNT, mBANT, rCNHC) specializing in the personalized application of ketogenic metabolic therapies for recovery from chronic health challenges. She credits the ketogenic lifestyle for successfully quieting an aggressive eye tumour she was diagnosed with fifteen years ago. In 2021, she completed her MSc degree in "Advanced Nutrition in Research and Practice" at Middlesex University in London. Patricia is co-author of The Ketogenic Kitchen, a best-selling cookbook that includes meal plans for therapeutic carbohydrate restriction. Born in Switzerland and living in Ireland, Patricia is a proud founding and advisory member of the European Keto Live Center based in Switzerland. She regularly speaks at international conferences and has established herself as one of the leading practitioners in the field of metabolic therapies. Nothing makes her prouder than witnessing her clients transform from bystanders to active and empowered participants on their health journey."
