Who owns public space? Although segregation legally ended in 1964 with the passing of the Civil Rights Act, informal policing of public spaces has continued. Recent viral videos where people of color are confronted in public spaces, are only half the story. From parks, to pools, to neighborhoods, to college campuses, people of color are being policed from public spaces. Page Gardner is the founder and board chair of Voter Participation Center and its partner organization founder, the Center for Voter Information. The Voter Participation Center has helped 4.6 million voters register and get to the polls. Page Gardner was a pioneer in recognizing unmarried women as a key political voting bloc with significant and impactful political power. We discuss what's called the “marriage gap” between unmarried and married women, in relation to their registration habits and voting behaviors.
