Steve Goldstein: Why Are There Snowblowers in Miami?

Guest: Steve Goldstein author of "Why Are There Snowblowers in Miami?" Transform Your Business Using the Five Principles of Engagement. As a senior executive for a major department store chain, Steve Goldstein was shocked to find snowblowers for sale at the company's Miami store. When Goldstein asked a salesman on the floor how long this had been going on he replied, "I've been here for 30 years and we've been getting them since I've been here." Steven D. Goldstein helps improve companies' performance through renewed engagement and laser-like focus. He has over thirty-five years of experience working as an operating executive at both global Fortune 500 corporations (including as Chairman and CEO of American Express Bank), midsize companies, as well as advising private equity firms with their portfolio companies. Jonathan Raymond "Good Authority"

Jonathan Raymond author of "Good Authority" past CEO and Chief Brand Officer at EMyth (the company behind the famous book), where I had the opportunity to lead the transformation of a global business and brand. Jonathan has worked in clean energy, e-commerce, and helped to found a non-profit that teaches mindfulness to at-risk youth. Refound is my attempt to bring it all together — to share the best of what I've learned in a way you can apply. If you're like most leaders I know, you had no intention of becoming a people manager. It turns out that the moment you have people working for you everything changes. It's not just that you need a new set of skills. It's that you have to learn to become a new version of yourself. Now you're the one who has to figure out how to motivate people, how to get people to communicate professionally, how to collaborate with teammates instead of devolving into gossip and politics. And, more than anything else, it's now your job to crack the code on how to get people to take risks instead of playing it safe. (Not to mention trying to do all that while navigating the organizational and cultural issues that were there long before you arrived). "Required reading for anyone who wants to do more than merely manage people. Good Authority is a modern classic, and it will redefine what it means to be the boss." - Seth Godin More on Jonathan Raymond & Good Authority: http://refound.com More on the host; Dov Baron. http://FullMontyLeadership.comGet bonus content on Patreon Learn more about your ad choices. What is Healthy Governance? #301

When your family business becomes bigger, a chance occurs in the organization. Usually it is called: Governance. Who has a voice in making decisions and who is accountable for those decisions? Ultimately, it is the 'Norms' of the organization that rule. And that may or may not be in the best interests of the organization. If the purpose is not clear, the Board has challenges. Dov covers all this and more in today's exciting episode. Plus: Do you have a fear of conflict? Let me help you out… Get Over It! I don't know if you've noticed, but there is a direct link between being a decisive leader and being a master of conflict. Bottom line: As a leader, if you cannot embrace healthy conflict you will have a hard time committing to your decisions. Great leaders are masters of conflict because they are willing to passionately disagree about the things they hold as most important. As a leader, you are a walking, talking living example to your people, they can and only will do what it is that you demonstrate through your own behavior. Leadership Expert, Speaker and Author, Jim Bouchard #299

Are you sick, tiered and angry about the quality leadership we are dealing with today...particularly at a political level? Do you wish someone would step up and call the craziness out? Our guest today is someone who decided to do something about it. Yes, I know it's shocking but he got angry about the way things were going and decided to do something about it. My guess today is a highly in demand leadership expert, speaker and author who I am honoured to call my friend (not in the Hollywood sense) but a real friend. He is someone I highly respect as a leader of leaders. He's also an outspoken individual who is committed to making a difference. And as a result has decided to jump into the crazy game of politics. He has chosen to run for the US House of Representatives as a Libertarian His slogan is "Not One. Penny. More." My mate Mr Jim Bouchard. Jim is always an outstanding guest and this time was no exception. I was just thinking how our discussion was in many ways an example of what healthy politics would look like. Passionate, heated (not always in agreement) and fighting for a common good! This is what the fools don't understand...We don't have to agree to like and respect each other to get along and make a difference. Check out Jim's Libertarian stance and get his free book here...I promise you'll find it highly stimulating! http://bit.ly/CrazyAngryLibertarian More on the host: Dov Baron http://FullMontyLeadership.comGet bonus content on Patreon Learn more about your ad choices. Curiosity and Leadership #298

Why curiosity may be your most important leadership quality. What does it mean to be curious. Are you interesting or interested? Are there any REAL Leaders left? Before I answer, I have to ask another question: Do you want to hear the absolute truth? I'm talking about the raw truth and definitely Not some buttered up, make it sound better than it is bunch of B.S. What I'm talking about is just you and me, sitting across the table from each other speaking our truth. (A word of caution…. What you are about to read will likely piss some people off. Maybe even you!) If you are ready to hear the absolute truth then I'm here to tell you that… There are no REAL Leaders anymore. Don't believe me? Take a look around. You and I both know that leadership in its present form is a about as effective as a Jell-O© bullet. The problem is, we've been trained to believe someone is a leader because of position, title or accumulation of goodies, and it's about time we realized; that's not "real" leadership. So let's boil leadership down to its core… You are a leader if you have people who have consciously decided to follow you. Note that I said consciously. That means they aren't following you because they have to, they're supposed to, or for any other reason than you, their leader, are the example of the way they want to be! So let's take a look at some so-called leaders we have today. Orlando Shooting Hate Crime or Terrorism? #295

Dov Baron talks about the recent shooting in Orlando. Was it Islamic terrorism or a Hate Crime? Mass shootings in the USA drive today's episode. From: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/14/us/orlando-shooting.html ORLANDO, Fla. — The gunman who went on a shooting rampage in a popular gay nightclub here shot nearly all of his victims in the first stages of the assault, then was utterly "cool and calm" while he talked by phone to law enforcement officials about further carnage, claimed allegiance to the Islamic State and praised the Boston Marathon bombers, officials said on Monday. As officials offered new details about the worst mass shooting in American history, which left 49 people dead and 53 wounded, Chief John Mina of the Orlando Police Department said that the gunman, Omar Mateen, 29, told police negotiators — falsely, they later discovered — that he had explosives and accomplices at Pulse nightclub. Mr. Mateen eventually made comments persuading them that "there would be an imminent loss of life," Chief Mina said, prompting the chief to end a three-hour standoff and order the assault that killed Mr. Mateen and freed dozens of people in trapped in the club. Technology and Succession Change or Die with Dov Baron

Technology and Succession Until recently, the way the boss ran the business was the 'only way'. Today, that is not the case. On this episode Dov Baron shares the history of Kodak and it's final fate as an example. Why do we never hear about them now? Kodak was the first company to come up with digital photography, but ignored it and were bypassed by all the digital camera makers and chips. Reacting to what happens is not enough. Think Blockbuster Videos. NextGen leaders have a unique view of what's coming and how to use that technology. If you don't tap into their knowledge, you could be the next Blockbuster... and not in a good way! Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few years, you know that the recession has aggravated what already was a deteriorating relationship between employers and their employees. While things weren't rosy before, now everyone knows someone (or has experienced it themselves!) who was caught in layoffs, buyouts, downsizing, capsizing, and reductions in benefits, not to mention freezes on new hires, pay raises, and promotions. You also know the result: People are willing to abandon companies like the proverbial rats on a sinking ship because no one feels safe! The reason this happens isn't rocket science! If you even suspect that the ship you are on could go down and something else comes along, there's a good chance you'd jump ship too. Think about it. The fear doesn't have to be based on facts; a nasty corrosive rumour can have people racing toward the exits just as easily. A Wharton School of Business article says that most companies can expect to lose anywhere between 20 and 50 percent of their employees in any given year. Few things are more disruptive and costly to your business than an unexpected exodus from your talent pool. Suicide among millionaires and billionaires […] is a social problem, which shows more people cannot cope with the pressure they feel to maintain their wealth after they've become successful," said Hu of Fudan University. Did you know, suicide rates are higher among the wealthiest nations? You know how… the more successful we become the more pressure there is to uphold an image of what we are "supposed" to be… Then you also probably know… The more successful people become the easier it is to feel like there are less and less people you can trust with your own problems and challenges? The main problem is: That we might think because we have become successful we've figured it all out… The biggest challenge with that is that as we become increasingly successful it's easy to also become increasingly cynical too. Fair Versus Equal Podcast Episode 283

The Battle of the Century! Fair Versus Equal. Is it possible that treating people equal in unfair? Can it create resentment? What happens when you look at situations from the prespective of fair, instead of equal. The bad news: Leadership includes conflict! To be a great leader you must become a C.R.O (Chief Relationship Officer) and that means becoming a master of conflict resolution. (However, that conflict doesn't have to be nasty) It is estimated that conflict in the workplace cost US employers over a billion dollars every year. Therefore, with the right training, it's the single most preventable cause of lost revenue. However, there is an even higher cost of avoiding conflict in that your people will be walking around carrying resentment and frustration that keeps them walled off. These walls will in turn crushes both innovation and morale, not only in that individual but everyone they work with. Your corporate culture is the life blood of your organization and not dealing with conflict will turn that blood toxic. Goals, Resolutions and Martin Luther King

How to make a Goal actually work. And it's Martin Luther King Day. It seems to me that right now in 2016, particularly in the present political climate we need to stand up for our civil rights regardless of our colour or creed. For me it seems that Dr King was trying to teach us… we are all one. We are not blacks, whites, yellow or purple striped. We are not just Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist or anything else they can use to separate us…We are humanity. That means, nothing, and I mean nothing, can separate us from the truth of who we truly are, not racial profiling, not extremists of any colour or religious belief, not even war. Recognition and the Chief Relationship Officer - Podcast 270

Making sense of people is a huge challenge for managers. Dov talks about the importance of recognition, and how the nuances of giving recognition can impact their motivation - good or bad - after the acceptance. What people do is what people do. All the parts of your organization works with all other parts of your organization. We have to pay attention to relationships in your organization. One day I was chatting with one of the CEO's that I mentoring. She is an esteemed leader in her industry, a person so many look up to, and for that reason what she said next might surprise you… "As a leader I have always believed that it is not only important, it's vital to recognize both privately and publicly the people around me for who they are and for their achievements" I could hear in her vocal inflection that there was more. There was a softening in her voice as she continued; "What's interesting, is that the higher a person climbs, the more people seem to think that those notes, and supportive words of acknowledgement don't matter." Are You Looking for Evidence?

How did you become a leader? What stops you from doing those things you still have to? Dov talks about a client who had a great dream and goal, who thought they hadn't achieved it, but once he examined the situation deeper, he realize that he had surpassed his goal. Everyday we receive more information (2 Billion bits of data every second) than we can ever handle. What was important in the past becomes important in the future. Your mind constantly filters this information and you consciously become aware of what 'fits' with what you thought was important. if you thought something was good or bad, your mind continues to filter and gives you the same view regardless of what is really happening. You have to reset your mind's filter, by being clear about what is important so your mind gets onside. www.fullmontyleadership.com Get bonus content on Patreon Learn more about your ad choices. Leadership Decisions - Podcast #263

There are invisible factors at work in your organization. 50% of why a team can be successful. Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few years, you know that the recession has aggravated what already was a deteriorating relationship between employers and their employees. While things weren't rosy before, now everyone knows someone (or has experienced it themselves!) who has been caught in layoffs, buyouts, downsizing, capsizing, and reductions in benefits, not to mention freezes on new hires, pay raises, and promotions. And you also know the result: People are willing to abandon companies like the proverbial rats on a sinking ship because no one feels safe! The reason isn't rocket science. Few things are more disruptive and costly to your business than an unexpected exodus from your talent pool. http://fullmontyleadership.com/Get bonus content on Patreon Learn more about your ad choices.
