Ep 319Who Killed Kennedy?
Back in 1996, Virgin Publishing was pumping out Doctor Who 'New Adventures' and 'Missing Adventures' novels every month, which were both very popular ranges with fans. Then it made... this. Who Killed Kennedy is a standalone Doctor Who novel that is very much its own thing. Tonight, we discuss the novel... what it is, what it's about, and what we think of it. Before then, news from the past month including our thoughts on Millie Gibson appearing in season two, and much more. You can contact us anytime via [email protected]
Ep 318Who Killed Kennedy - Synopsis
On this Sunday's flagship show, we review the 1996 Virgin Publishing Doctor Who novel, Who Killed Kennedy. We appreciate it might be some time since some of you read it, and many of you might have never read it at all (being a nearly 30 year-old novel!), so this episode serves as a synopsis of the novel, enabling you to brush up on the basic storyline. Take note, this isn't a discussion, and it rattles along at a fair old pace. If you're not up on the first few seasons of Pertwee (and even a few stories that happened before his era), you might miss some of what's going on in this one. But stick with it, and try to get the flavour of what's going on, and we're sure it will benefit you when listening to us talk about the novel on Sunday. See you then! Ep 317Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith was released in 2005 and tonight, The Doctor Who Show team examines it in what must rate as one of the coldest of cold takes ever committed to a digital recording. What are our memories of the movie on release? What are our thoughts on it now, after a 2024 re-watch? If you’ve got an hour to spare, sit back, relax, and join us in an ALTERNATE GALAXIES episode that travels to a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away to try and review the film, once and for all, with no contemporary distractions. By the way, we reviewed Star Wars Episode II – Attack of the Clones in March and Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace in February, if you haven't heard our takes on the two earlier installments in the prequel trilogy.

Ep 316Top Doctor Who non-fiction
In today’s episode we dive into the realm of Doctor Who non-fiction books. So much has been written about the show over the years - some of it academic, some of it autobiography/biography, some of it in the form of episode guides, some of it in the form of fans writing about their fandom, and much, much more. Which would YOU pick for your top Doctor Who non-fiction books? There's a lot to choose from, so why not let us know? Contact us any time: [email protected]
Ep 315Jodie Whittaker / Dave's Big Day Out 2
Over the years, whenever Dave has seen a notable Doctor Who alum at an event, we've endeavoured to switch on the microphones and grab his thoughts in a special, standalone episode of the show. A year ago this was Sophie Aldred in the original 'Dave's Big Day Out' episode, but prior to that, episodes like, 'When Dave Met Chris' have also entertained listeners who couldn't attend the events. Today, we talk to Dave immediately upon his return home from Supanova where he saw, and interacted with, Jodie Whittaker. And also caught the panel for Jango/Boba Fett himself, Temuera Morrison. Enjoy our chat, and contact us anytime at [email protected]

Ep 314Gin & TARDIS #1 - Horror of Fang Rock
Join Dave from the Doctor Who Show, Mark from 42 to Doomsday, and Richard from Spacefall: A Blakes 7 Podcast, after knocking back a few ciders at Dave's place and watching the updated version of Horror of Fang Rock on the new Doctor Who Season 15 Blu-ray set. What are their backgrounds with the story? What do they think of the updated version? Tune in, find out. Contact the podcast anytime: [email protected]
Ep 313Rob & Dave are the Time Meddlers!
A bit of a different episode for March. In this one, we take on the role of time meddlers, going back into Doctor Who's past to change aspects of its history - mostly in the production sense, which then trickles down to the stories we see onscreen - and then discuss the fallout. Does a little change HERE equal a big change THERE? See if you agree with us. You can also contact us anytime via [email protected]

Ep 312Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones
Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones was released in 2002 and tonight, The Doctor Who Show team examines it in what must rate as one of the coldest of cold takes ever committed to a digital recording. What are our memories of the movie on release? What are our thoughts on it now, after a 2024 re-watch? If you’ve got an hour to spare, sit back, relax and join us in an ALTERNATE GALAXIES episode that travels to a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away to try and review the film, once and for all, with no contemporary distractions. We reviewed Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace last month and will also be reviewing Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith in April.

Ep 309Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace is 25 years old later this year and tonight, The Doctor Who Show team examines it in what must rate as one of the coldest of cold takes ever committed to a digital recording. What are our memories of the movie on release? What are our thoughts on it now, after a 2024 re-watch? If you've got an hour to spare, sit back, relax and join us in an ALTERNATE GALAXIES episode that travels to a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away to try and review the film, once and for all, with no contemporary distractions. We will also be reviewing Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones in March and Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith in April.

Have you seen the Keys of Marinus? Do you agree with the guys? Why not write in and let us know your thoughts? Ep 298Doctor Who @ 60 : Our Lives - And Yours - With The Show
It's the 23rd of November, 2023 and Doctor Who is 60! Rather than drop this episode on the weekend - which would be its normal monthly slot - we've brought it forward a few days to celebrate the anniversary. Plus, we'll be putting out a hot take episode this weekend anyway, when we take a look at the first of three 60th anniversary specials - THE STAR BEAST. In today's episode we have a quick discussion about three of the bigger issues leading into the anniversary, including the retconning of Davros, a colourised version of The Daleks, and the Tales of the TARDIS series of releases. But then it's onto Doctor Who itself. Why did we get into it? How did we fall into fandom? What happened during the Wilderness Years? What about the show's return? And what does the future hold? Along the way we also read, and play, comments from our listeners, who also tell us their own stories about the show. We hope you enjoy the stories herein. Happy birthday to Who! Tune in, drop out, and contact us anytime, [email protected]

Ep 294Top Overrated Stories
As we sit here on the edge of the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, there's an awful lot of TV stories out there. Some of them quite underrated... some of them regarded commensurate to their quality... and some of them are incredibly overrated. In today's episode, we look at the latter. What have been the most overrated stories in Doctor Who's long and storied history? Come at us! Contact us any time: [email protected]
Ep 293Violence in Doctor Who
*Dedicated to our friend and listener, David Harmsworth* In today's episode we discuss violence in Doctor Who, from the original three decades of the show, through to the modern era. Has Doctor Who always been a violent series? Are some eras more violent than others? Before then, we have an Apple Podcasts review, some news, and short topics. After the feature on violence we have our usual listener emails, and what else we've been consuming in the world of entertainment. Strap in! You can follow us on X @theDWshow or write to us about anything you like at: [email protected]

Ep 292Fantasy production teams
Doctor Who has had a lot of talented production staff over the past 60 years - and most of them never worked together. In this List Makers, sent in by listener 'Blue Box' Bill McCann from the USA, we make our fantasy lists of which production staff we would have loved to see paired together. Are you surprised by any of our choices? Agree with them? Why not let us know YOUR top production pairings? Contact us any time: [email protected]
Ep 291The Fires of Vulcan
Dave's away this month, so Rob recruits super-sub Dwayne Bunney from the Sirens of Audio podcast for a suitably Big Finish themed episode, this time talking about the classic, The Fires of Vulcan - the twelfth story in Big Finish's monthly range, released in September 2000. It was written by Steve Lyons and features Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor and Bonnie Langford as Melanie Bush. Before then, the guys also talk some recent Doctor Who news, including Big Chief Studios going out of business; the surprise animation of the Underwater Menace; a possible return to Doctor Who for Steven Moffat; and the 60th anniversary celebrations at Big Finish - the 'Once and Future' range of stories. Lots to talk about! Tune in, drop out, and contact us anytime, [email protected]

Ep 290Top 1960s Stories
The 1960s era of Doctor Who is one that fascinates and entertains both of us - to the degree that William Hartnell is Dave's favourite Doctor. In this episode of THE LIST MAKERS, we sit down to discuss what our top stories of the 1960s are. Are you surprised by any of our choices? Agree with them? Why not let us know YOUR top 1960s stories? Contact us any time: [email protected]
Ep 289Stories that could only come from their era
In past episodes of the podcast we've considered various TARDIS teams being placed into stories from other eras of Doctor Who and how they would fare. In this episode, we turn that concept on its head somewhat and each come to the table with a Doctor Who story from each era that we think could ONLY be of its era and not be made in a different era with a different team. Before then, we also talk some recent Doctor Who news, including Ncuti Gatwa confirming he will complete at least two series of the show; Season 20 comes to Blu-ray; Target novelisations of the 60th anniversary stories; and Mark Gatiss comments on how he would play the Doctor. Tune in, drop out, and contact us anytime, [email protected]

Ep 288Our top ’almost’ companions in Doctor Who
A new month means a new LIST MAKERS episode! This time, we discuss 'almost' companions in Doctor Who. Characters whom we think would have made good companions or, in some cases, were designed to be companions, then the production changed course. If you’ve never heard a List Makers episode before, these are 20m chats based around making a Doctor Who related list and discussing similarities, differences, and whatever else comes up during the chat! Suggestions for future lists to be drawn from The Hat of Rassilon are always welcome; get in touch via any of the methods mentioned below! Twitter, Facebook or email us old-school style at [email protected]
Ep 287INTERVIEW: Pull To Open: 1962–1963: The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who
With a new non-fiction Doctor Who book on the horizon, this time looking at the creation of Doctor Who back in 1963, Rob sits down for the third time in the life of the podcast with friend of the show and the book's author, Paul Hayes. Pull To Open: 1962–1963: The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who is available from Ten Acre Films on July 24, 2023. = = = ‘Fresh and compelling… As definitive an account of those early years as I have read’ Toby Hadoke When Doctor Who began on Saturday November 23 1963, few could have guessed that it marked the start of perhaps the most extraordinary story in the history of BBC television drama. But there had already been another story, equally extraordinary yet unseen, leading up to the transmission of that opening episode – the creation of the series itself. Pull to Open explores the behind-the-scenes saga of Doctor Who in 1963, when a chain of events at the BBC brought together a disparate group to launch what would become one of British TV’s best-loved and most successful programmes. It’s the story of why these events happened; the BBC creative culture into which Doctor Who was born; how television drama was made in the early 1960s; and an insight into the people who started this epic journey. Drawing from the BBC’s written archives and new interviews with some of those who were there, including Doctor Who’s first director Waris Hussein and original co-star Carole Ann Ford, Pull to Open is a detailed and comprehensive account of the programme’s path to the screen. Immerse yourself in the world of BBC Television in 1963 and discover how a series which was almost cancelled before a single episode was shown survived to cement its place in the popular culture of a nation. Foreword by Toby Hadoke
Ep 286Mark Gatiss
From time to time, the Doctor Who Show devotes an episode to a series writer. A great chance to talk about numerous diverse episodes, sometimes from totally different eras of the show, only related by the name on the script. In today's episode... Mark Gatiss. Possibly the most 'Marmite' of all Doctor Who writers, especially in the modern era. Fans tend to love and hate Gatiss' stories... but strangely can never agree which stories are meant to go in which column! Stories covered in this episode include: The Unquiet Dead The Idiot’s Lantern Victory of the Daleks Night Terrors Cold War The Crimson Horror Robot of Sherwood Sleep No More The Empress of Mars Plus a number of 'extras' including Gatiss' New Adventure novels, Nightshade, and St. Anthony's Fire, and the 50th anniversary special, An Adventure in Space and Time. Before then we also talk some recent Doctor Who news, including new cast members for the upcoming Ncuti Gatwa era; Davo's wife has written a book; and are there some missing episodes materialising from the ether in time for the 60th? Tune in, drop out, and contact us anytime, [email protected]

Ep 284Dave’s Big Day Out
On May 13, 2023, our Dave travelled up to Sydney to attend the Sophie Aldred fan event, run by our fellow Antipodean podcasters, The Sirens of Audio. In addition to being there to support the return of small, fan-run events in this country, Dave was also tasked by the hosts to conduct an on-stage interview with Doctor Who author, Jon Blum. This was originally to be a joint interview with Jon and his wife, the celebrated Doctor Who author, Kate Orman, however Kate was unable to attend on the day. This podcast is a half-hour discussion between Rob and Dave about the day in general, followed by about half an hour of audio from the Jon Blum chat. As we mention on the podcast, the audio of the Blum interview isn't up to our usual podcast standards, but we're sure you'd rather hear a version of the chat than nothing at all, so we include it here. Enjoy! Tweet us, Facebook us or email us at [email protected]
Ep 283Season 26 (1989) Deep Dive
We threw a vote out there on Twitter for which season would like us to discuss on the next episode, from a list of four options. In this episode, Rob & Dave discuss the Virgin Missing Adventure novel, The Shadow of Weng-Chiang, as voted for by... you! 162 votes were cast and Shadow of Weng-Chiang took 35.2% of the vote, just pipping Scales of Injustice on 29.6%, with Sands of Time close behind on 25.9% and Lords of the Storm on 9.3% bringing up the rear. So here we are to discuss it. Before they get to talking about the novel, the guys also talk about the past month in Doctor Who news, including Season 9 of Classic Doctor Who on Blu-ray still not produced locally in Australia - and perhaps never will be. Follow us on Twitter @theDWshow or write to us about anything: [email protected]
Ep 278Synopsis - The Shadow of Weng-Chiang
Our episode on April 30, 2023 features the Virgin Missing Adventure, The Shadow of Weng-Chiang, as its main topic. In the past when we've done novels, we've included a blow-by-blow summary of the novel, so our listeners are across the story. The theory being that far less listeners have read all the Virgin or BBC novels, and may need the information. This practice has been appreciated, but has also blown out episode run-times. Given that not every listener even needs the summary, we put our heads together to come up with a way to provide a summary but not blow out the episode. And here it is... a standalone summary of The Shadow of Weng-Chiang. If you've never read the novel before, or you have but feel like a refresher is in order, this 15m podcast will tell you what happens in the novel, from start to finish. Have at it. See you on Sunday with our Shadow of Weng-Chiang episode, where you'll hear our actual thoughts on the story in question!

Ep 277Alternate Galaxies: Ultraviolet
In our 17th outing for this irregular mini-podcast on our feed, we’ve been watching the 1998 six-part TV series Ultraviolet (so you don’t have to), and we give our thoughts on it. Drop us a line anytime - [email protected] Ultraviolet is a 1998 British television series written and directed by Joe Ahearne and starring Jack Davenport, Susannah Harker, Idris Elba, and Philip Quast. The music was composed and performed by Sue Hewitt. The programme was produced by World Productions for Channel 4.

How many snaps will we get? Thanks to David Beardsley from Santa Cruz, California for the topic! If you’ve never heard a List Makers episode before, these are 20m chats based around making a list related to a Doctor Who topic and discussing our similarities, differences, and whatever else comes up during the chat! Suggestions for future lists to be drawn from The Hat of Rassilon are welcome; get in touch! Twitter, Facebook or email us old-school style at [email protected]
Ep 275The Ultimate Jodie Whittaker Cold Take

Rob also gets excited about episodes of The Afternoon Show being found and digitised, showing him and his club mates, back in 1988, taking part in a quiz on ABC TV over three days before Remembrance of the Daleks aired. All that and so much more. If you're an old hand, you know the drill by now. If you're new to the show - hello!
