The Doctor Who Podcast

On Saturday 1st June, the BBC annouced that Matt Smith is to leave the role of The Doctor in the 2013 Christmas Special.  So after three and half years, we have but two episodes of Doctor Who featuring Matt Smith left.  Join us in the campervan for this special edition of the DWP as Trevor and James assimilate, cogitate and digest the information. Now the dust has settled with the Name of the Doctor having screened and most (but not all!) of the secrets have been revealed, Ian and Tom push back in a lazy chair and discuss Series 7B as a whole.  Their highlights, their lowlights, what worked, what didn’t, and the magic time travelling properties of coffee. All this and so much more in another episode of THE Doctor Who Podcast.

We are finally here.  The long journey that began way back in September 2012 comes to an end with The Name of the Doctor.  Comes to an end, but also tantalises us with the voyage we have ahead of us in this anniversary. An eager Trevor, James and Tom are in the campervan this time around, all bursting at the seams to share their thoughts on the final story of Series 7. It’s another episode of The Doctor Who Podcast and this time, Trevor and James are joind by Stephen Prescott of A Madman With  Box Podcast fame.  Join the lads as they talk about Mark Gatiss’ second script of this year’s run of episodes. What did they make of it?! They also take some time to talk about Doctor Who in the fiftieth anniversary year – just how is the celebratory year going so far and what can we look forward to over the next twelve months or so?

This week The DWP bring you a review from the very epicentre of the Campervan – the kitchen.  Joined by their good friend Michael from the Tin Dog Podcast Trevor and James review Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS.

It’s another interview special!  This time, James was fortunate enough to interview Louise Jameson on stage at the recent Big Blue Box 2 convention held in Tunbridge Wells.  As many of you will know, Louise appeared as Leela in forty episodes of Doctor Who with Tom Baker back in the seventies. Louise was an absolute joy to speak to and fondly reminisced about her time on Doctor Who.   Join her and James as she discusses Leela, Big Finish, Tom Baker, directing Katy Manning and her forays into writing and directing. Thanks to Stephen Elsden, the Commander-in-Chief of the Big Blue Box conventions which are run in aid of Compaid – a charity providing services to disabled people in the South East of England.

James and Trevor have the absolute hide this week to bring you their review of the new story Hide. The review was recorded whilst hiding in their newly constructed duck hide, laying on the hides of at least 15 different animals.  This new addition to the Campervan complex is called “The Hideout”, though you will neither hide nor hair of a mention of this on the official drawings. So find your favourite hiding place, pop your earphones in and join James and Trevor in their discussion of Hide.

Two hundred!  Two hundred episodes of THE Doctor Who podcast!  One hundred and ninety-nine episodes since that review of The Eleventh Hour all the way back in 2010! Woo-hoo! How then, should we celebrate such a landmark? What would be appropriate?!  Hmmm.  We at The DWP thought long and hard on this.  There could be so many ways to celebrate this historic occasion and say thank you to our devoted listeners.  We came up with a couple of ideas: humming the Doctor Who theme for five straight hours reviewing Delta and the Bannermen and Unicorn and the Wasp whilst inhaling helium perform an entire podcast in morse code doing a commentary track for Planet of the Dead. We rejected these plainly insane ideas, and after much discussion finally made a decision.  How about a never-before-heard interview with an iconic Who writer who sadly is no longer with us?  A writer who assisted in giving us War Lords, Draconians, Silurians and Sea Devils?!  Yes.  Yes indeed.   That might be just the way to go! It is therefore with immense pride that The Doctor Who Podcast presents an interview with none other than Mr Malcolm Hulke! But why stop there?! Mac, as he preferred to be called struck up a collaborative writing relationship with a man who also went on to become a Who legend in his own right.  Why not interview him too and ask him about his memories of Mac?  We therefore also bring you a brand new interview with Mr Terrance Dicks! So, sit back and enjoy an hour in the company of Messrs Dicks and Hulke as they talk about the show they help immortalise, all in one juicy, celebratory edition of The Doctor Who Podcast. Things get decidedly chilly in the DWP Campervan this week as Trevor, Leeson and James review the latest episode of Doctor Who – Cold War. Yes, it’s the highly anticipated return of the Ice Warriors and our intrepid reviewing team revel in the opportunity to discuss a new Ice Warrior story. To help prepare themselves for this episode, the boys sat in a cramped cupboard together for a week and poured water over their heads every three minutes whilst watching The Hunt for Red October on a continuous loop. They talk about submarines, the 1980s, Russians and what, just what – precisely if you please – is the correct definition of a cyborg. In a very special episode of the Doctor Who Podcast, it’s time to take you back to where it all began. In 2009, two men had a dream, create an episode of the DWO WhoCast in which everything was made up, not a single thing was true. They even created a special day on the calendar to release this episode – April 1. The rest, as they say, is history, legend. Stories passed down through the generations about the episode of the DWO WhoCast, reviewing the mystical episode The Spume of Destiny. Missing, believed wiped for many years, this episode of the DWO WhoCast has been returned to the archives and can now be presented again to be enjoyed by a new generation of fans. Our thanks go to Seb over at Doctor Who Online for facilitating the return of this episode.

It’s back! After what seems like an eternity (but in reality, is actually just three months) Doctor Who is back on our tellyscreens.  Huzzah! Typically, it’s at this time of year that Trev goes walkabout so James and Michele are left to steer the campervan – but are joined by the fabulous Laura (no, not the ood one), a long-term supporter of the show and has has kinda assumed the role of ‘roving DWP reporter’ of late – she helped to cover the recent Big Finish Day (interviews will be forthcoming) and has attended the BFI screenings with Ian and James this year. So what did this new DWP campervan-combo think of the series 7b opener, The Bells of St. John? Tune in, download and find out!  But don’t click.  Don’t even click.  Click, and you’re dead.

A big week here in the DWP Campervan here at the compound. Trevor, James and Leeson wrap their heads around the epic new series episode from last Friday night – Remembrance of the Spume.  As we see Season 14 coming to a close the revelations are coming thick and fast, and this story is no exception!  Is there enough in this story to keep long term fans happy and new fans entertained?  Can the show recover from the “Mars Colony” incident? Ian and Michele keep the Big Finish reviews coming, and take a look and listen to the latest adventure – Clink. Onion Boy makes his triumphant return to the DWP airwaves after his enforced cyro-sleep and makes some interesting observations on the question that must not be answered… As always, get your feedback in via the usual means.  We look forward to hearing from you.

As is customary at the DWP before we launch into a new series of Doctor Who, we have a look at the information we know so far about the upcoming stories and see if we can figure out what they are about. The investigation team of Trevor, James and Ian have scoured the internet, looked under the floorboards and tried a sneaky mind-meld with Stephen Moffat to bring you the good oil on Series 7B. As we are discussing spoilers about unaired stories, if you are sensitive to these sorts of things, this probably isn’t the episode for you.  We do not talk about anything that isn’t already publically available. Ian and Michele also have a chat about Life Without the Ponds – we are entering an era of the show that does not have our second favourite married couple as part of the TARDIS crew.  Will the show survive?

We return to the deep bountiful well of Big Finish in this episode, with Michele and Trevor reviewing one of the latest trilogies from Big Finish.  Sylvester McCoy as the 7th Doctor takes centre stage in the audios Protect & Survive, Black & White and Gods & Monsters. We also feature the second part of our Seventh Heaven series, in which Stephen Elsden continues his journey through the previously unseen era of the 7th Doctor.

James and Ian were lucky enough to attend the recent Big Blue Box convention at the Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells. Attending were a whole galaxy of Doctor Who stars, including: Dan Starkey (Commander Strax) Toby Hadoke (Stand up comedian and writer/performer of Moths ate my Doctor Who Scarf) Simon Fisher-Becker (Dorium Maldovar) Nick Pegg (Dalek Operator) Andrew Smith (Writer of Full Circle) Tom Spilsbury (Editor of Doctor Who Magazine) In this episode we bring you some short interviews James and Ian were lucky enough to record with the above gentlemen and talk Doctor Who (naturally!). The DWP campervan and its inhabitants return with another amazing Doctor Who Podcast Quiz showdown! In this instalment, Ian, Trevor and Leeson are subject to the baffling questions ofJames. Note that this quiz was recorded before the lads embarked on their trip across the pond to the Gallifrey convention.

This week on the Doctor Who Podcast Trevor, James, Ian and Leeson throw out the schedule, give scant regard to planning, and laugh in the face of anything close to a script. Yes, it’s another of our internationally renowned Geek Outs! A diverse array of topics are discussed, ranging from animation, Doctor Who trolls and Mindwarp. Join the boys as they throw caution and common sense to the wind.

James, Ian and Michele were lucky enough to attend the Gallifrey convention in Los Angeles this year, and now that they have returned to their respective parts of the world they come together again in the Campervan to discuss what they thought of the 24th Gallifrey convention. Ian and Michele also review the final two stories in the Big Finish Counter Measures box set.

Today the DWP present the second epic quiz showdown that took place at the recent Gallifrey convention in Los Angeles. In this mighty battle is the long awaited rematch between the DWP (championed byJames, Ian, Michele and ring in Luke from the Minute Doctor Who Podcast) and those lyrical funsters The Oodcast. Keen listeners to the DWP might remember the previous Gallifrey quiz between these two podcast behemoths, and it didn’t go too well for the boys from the DWP… What will happen this time?  Will the Oods be triumphant again?  Or will the DWP (and a ring in) wrestle back the title of quiz champions? Hosted once again by friend of the show Andrew Smith (who stood in valiantly at the last minute in place of Ed Stradling), we will see who is victorious, and who headed off to the convention closing ceremony with their tails tucked firmly between their legs. A big, big thank you goes out to Chip from the Two Minute Timelord Podcast for going above and beyond the call of duty to secure this particular recording of the quiz for us.

We all have our own guilty pleasures.  Whether it be that sneaky trip to the fridge at midnight to have chomp on that chocolate bar without having to share it or taking delight in sitting down to enjoy The Phantom Menace, engaging in activities we know would raise eyebrows from our peers makes our guilty pleasures all the more enjoyable! Doctor Who is the same.  We all enjoy parts of the show that others frown upon. Our own little moments of joy in a show that might not necessarily be considered as such by other fans. In this episode, Tom and Leeson discuss their own Who related guilty pleasures, along with Ian and Michele’s own secret loves from the shows history. Tom and Leeson also find time to discuss what is happening currently in the world of Doctor Who.  With that in mind, for those that are sensitive to spoilers, it may be best to avoid the first 16 minutes of this episode.  The conversation is only slightly spoilerish – Tom and Leeson allude to facts already officially released and publicly available.  Neither rumoured plot points or unofficial news is discussed.  

A very special quiz this time around from the Doctor Who Podcast. We present today the first of two quizzes that our very own Campervan inhabitants took part in whilst enjoying the delights of the Gallifrey One convention in Los Angeles. For this quiz Ian and James went up against the quizzing might of Josh and Steve from The Memory Cheats podcast. Quiz master is friend of the show Andrew Smith, writer of the 80s story, Full Circle. And hosting proceedings (which really just gives him an excuse to make some cheap shots at the contestants) is another dear friend of the show, Chip, host of the Two Minute Timelord podcast. Two mighty teams, with thousands of kilometres of water between them, brought together to compete in the quizzing arena.  Exciting huh? Thanks to Chip for making the audio recording of this mighty battle available to the DWP.

It’s another journey into the world of Big Finish – join Trevor, Leeson and Tom as they take a look at this Fifth Doctor, Turlough, Nyssa and Tegan trilogy released towards the end of 2012.  This eclectic collection of stories sees the TARDIS materialise in Calcutta, on a meteor and in Australia proving once again just how inventive the minds of those amazing bods at Big Finish really are. But did the Campervan occupants like them?  Never a podcast to hold back, tune in to this latest edition of The Doctor Who Podcast to find out.  Howzat?!

In just a few days, the DWP Campervan will be packing up and preparing itself for dematerialisation.  The co-ordinates are set for Los Angeles where hoards of Doctor Who fans will be travelling to from all four corners of the globe to celebrate fifty years of the show we call Doctor Who at the annual Gallifrey One convention. Sadly, some of the Campervan occupants will be absent – Trev, Leeson and Tom’s invites failed to show up at the correct space-time co-ordinates, and they are therefore destined to miss the campervan’s departure – in very a similar way that Tegan missed the TARDIS at the end of Timeflight. Will they end up in Amsterdam?  Let hope not.  For Amsterdam’s sake. The last in our current series of Burning Issues here at the DWP – the thorny subject of “How Far Can Sacred Cows be Pushed?”  How much that we hold dear about our beloved program is open to reinterpretation, reimagining and redesign and how much about the history of the show do we need to consider when creating more of it? The first of these is in response to a statement Tom made on a previous DWP – that the classic series story Genesis of the Daleks should be “put in a box and buried”, further stating it was the worst story of the first twenty years of the program. It wouldn’t be a new year of THE Doctor Who Podcast without the hosts speculating on what will happen in the Doctor Who universe in 2013, the anniversary year for this amazing show.  Trev, James and Leeson offer up their suggestions for what will be going on this year, partly cause it is fun to guess, but mainly because we look forward to revisiting them again in a years time and see how badly we were wrong! We bring you a very special episode of the DWP this week –James spoke to DVD value-added-material producer, Mr Ed Stradling.  Ed is responsible for producing a ridiculously high number of extra features that have been included on Doctor Who DVDs, the first of which saw the likes of Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss talk about Earthshock all the way back in 2003!  Ed also talks about Ian Levene’s project to re-construct Planet of the Giants back into the four part-story originally conceived, the results of which appear on the DVD, and discusses rumours about missing stories being found. So sit down with a  cuppa tea, put your feet up and listen toJames and Ed talk Doctor Who for half an hour!

In what will be the DWPs last podcast for 2012, we go over the feedback which we have received from you regarding the 2012 Christmas special, The Snowmen. Be warned, there are multiple kooky theories, time eddies and informed comments abound in this episode! Now that you have celebrated Doctor Who, Christmas-style, let the DWP team of Trevor, James and Tom take you on another special journey. We have been on a long journey in our look at the world of the 10th Doctor, but before we leave this era we have diverted up a little side street to take a look at some of the novels featuring the 10th Doctor and his various companions.  As well as an extensive television history to enjoy, the books provide further enjoyment for those looking for more adventures featuring this most human of Doctors. Last month, the assembled hordes of Doctor Who fans across the planet descended upon the United States third largest city, Chicago.  The DWP was represented in the form of our very own Michele who in additional to being on the podcasting panel, spoke to Messrs Richard Dinnick and Paul Spragg.  Richard has written extensively for Big Finish in both the written and audio formats whilst Paul, Big Finish employee-extraordinaire and serial crisp eater talks about Doctor Who on audio and the plans that Big Finish have for the future. Join Tom and Michele as they bring you our coverage of the convention  which showcased none other than Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred as headliners and a host of other Dr Who luminaries.    

All good things must come to an end, and in this episode we say goodbye to David Tennant as the 10th Doctor and the DWPs look at his era of the show. With only the specials of 2009/2010 left, the 10th Doctor somehow knows the end is near.  How will he cope with the impending prophecies? Trev, Leeson and James forge on with our indepth 10th Doctor retrospective, looking over the era of the show dominated by actor David Tenant. In this episode we look at Christmas specials, the year that was in 2008 and cast our eye forward to the inevitable end to this incarnation.  

Join our very own roving reporterJames, Luke from The Minute Doctor Who Podcast and friend of the show and long-time DWP listener Tony as they talk about what they thought of Air Lock – episode 3 of the missing story, Galaxy 4. The British Film Institute screened the restored episode as part of the Missing Belived Wiped event held on Sunday 2nd December 2012.   This was only the second time the episode has been shown in full to an audience in the UK and you can hear the joy asJames, Luke and Tony talk about what can justifiably be described as new Doctor Who, despite it being first transmitted on BBC1 forty-seven years ago!    

2007 was a strange time for Doctor Who – now established as a regular piece of Saturday night telly for three months each year, what would the production team be able to come up with to prevent the interest of millions of viewers from waning? James talks to Stephen Elsden, the Commander-in-Chief of the Big Blue Box Convention that re-materialises in Tunbridge Wells on Saturday 16 March 2013. The popular one day convention for fans of Doctor Who rematerialises at Trinity Theatre to mark the 50th anniversary of everyone’s favourite time traveller. The event will include panel discussions with audience Q&As, a live debate, charity auction, special screenings, signings and stalls. Guests (subject to work commitments) include LouiseJameson (Leela), Sarah Sutton (Nyssa), Simon Fisher-Becker (Dorium Maldovar) and from inside the Daleks, operators Cy Town and Nicholas Pegg. Part one of our Tenth Doctor Retrospective is finally here – join Trevor, Leeson and James as they calmly and reasonably debate Doctor Who in 2006.  Listen as no furniture flies through the air. Revel in the tranquility as scerene and articlate as views are exchanged in a loving and caring campervan atmosphere.  In fact, use this podcast as a theraputic relaxation tool to take a break from the madness of this crazy  world we all inhabit! On serious note (well, relatively) this episode sees the DWP team start another of their seemingly very popular era-retrospectives. The tenth Doctor’s era is a funny one – on one hand it feels very recent, but in this episode the boys find themselves talking about episodes that were first transmitted on BBC1 six years ago. SIX years ago! The lads are back next week in part two to talk about Shakespeare, Martha and Masters in Series 3.      

You may have heard of a little show called I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! which has been going for quite some time in the UofK.  D-List celebrities are thrown into an Australian wilderness area and forced to eat bugs, undertake ridiculous challenges and spending long nights trying to figure out who is the least obscure amongst them. Our very own Doctor Who, Colin Baker is making an appearance this season, and James and Trevor chat about just why the Doctor of the multi-coloured coat is willing to make a multi-coloured fool of himself on this program. The boys also chat about our very own Michele’s appearance at the upcoming Chicago TARDIS, and we launch yet another incredible competition for a very special prize that is definately worth fighting for.

It’s been a long time between drinks in the Doctor Who Podcast quizzing arena, but the boys are back to pit their wits against the best Doctor Who has to offer. In this instalment of this epic battle, our very own Ian is the quizmaster, throwing the verbal conundrums up against Trevor, James and Leeson. The DWP Campervan this week is getting a little crafty.  The dining room table is covered in paints, crayons and half finished sketches of John Barrowman. The lounge suite is swimming in a sea of different coloured wools, so much it would put that witty knitter Madame Nostradamus to shame. And the kitchen.  Let’s just say it will take a little while to clear up the paper mache, glue and tinsel. What is all this for you may ask?  Well, Trevor, Leeson and Tom have been delving into the wonderful world of fan creativity, in its many guises and forms. Doctor Who fans certainly are a talented lot, and we have found a few that we wish to share with you today. Michele talks with Andrew about the process behind how a Big Finish score is produced.  There are some fascinating insights into an area of Doctor Who production that is rarely talked about.
