Ep 96True Hope for Hard Times: Setting Our Eyes on Eternity

When life gets hard, what is your hope? What helps you weather the storms of life? As believers, we will experience suffering and hardships on this side of eternity. We have to ask: what helps us persevere and not lose hope? The key is to set our eyes, hearts, and minds on eternity. This is really important, but even as believers, we may not know the why and how. In this episode, we talk about what setting our eyes on eternity means, and how we can practically do it in our everyday lives. Ep 95“I Heard the Bells” and the Hope of Christ with Caroline Cobb

Advent is around the corner. The joy of Christmas is starting to fill the air. This year more than ever though, many of us are feeling the tension between the suffering and heartache of this broken world and the joy of Christmas. “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” is a beautiful Advent hymn that works through this dissonance, and singer/songwriter Caroline Cobb helps us navigate through the lyrics to uncover the beauty that is Jesus, the reason for the season. Ep 94Thinking Deeply, Forming Convictions, and Loving Our Neighbors

“Christians are closed-minded. They lack logic and reason.” Ever heard this? The truth is, believers can and should be deep thinkers. If we’re in Christ, we are redeemed: body, MIND, and soul! Faith and intellectual integrity go hand-in-hand! We should engage our minds and think deeply about Scripture, our beliefs, and our convictions. We should think deeply about the grey areas of life! We believe this helps us love God and love our neighbors better! But it takes humility, effort, and the help of the Spirit. Ep 93Fighting Our Fears with Kristen Wetherell

Many of our fears are heightened right now. Some of us fight our fears by trying to will them away. We remember verses like “do not be afraid” and “do not be anxious” and think our fears reveal a weak faith, which makes us feel like not-good-enough Christians. Today, we’re joined by Kristen Wetherell, and she reminds us that we don’t have to fight our fears that way. Instead, we are invited to trust God and believe that He is for us. Kristen walks us through how we can fight our fears in a healthy, practical way. Ep 92Seeing Christ in All of Scripture

Jesus is in every verse, passage, and chapter of the Bible. What does this mean? Should we be looking for a hidden reference to Christ in every single verse? What does it mean to see Christ in all of Scripture? We believe the whole Bible points to Jesus. In the Story of Scripture, He is the main character! Having a Christ-centered approach to Scripture helps us make sense of the OT and NT, but this takes practice! We talk about why this is crucial for Bible study, and how we can individually do this. Barriers to Food and Fellowship (and How to Overcome Them)

bonus

Food and fellowship go hand in hand, but it’s not always easy to do. While the benefits are clear, the barriers are also very real. We feel pressed for time and money. We worry if it’ll be awkward or we’ll be rejected by others. We stress about food allergies and dietary preferences. We get it! In this episode, we get really practical about how we can work in and through these barriers, and how we can make fellowshipping with others around the table a priority and reality. Ep 91Food and Fellowship

Food has a special way of fostering deeper conversations and knitting hearts together. There is something powerful about gathering around the table with other people. We believe that food is a generous gift from God, and it can be a means to point others to the goodness of God. Thus, food can play a significant role in evangelism and discipleship. There are so many ways food can help believers cultivate meaningful relationships both inside and outside the church. Ep 90“You Do You”, Shame, and Repentance with Maggie Combs

“You do you. Everything depends on you. You need an escape. Be more than just a mom.” Have you heard any of these? What’s your response? Is it freedom or stress? Our society imposes these standards to tell us how to be a good mom or good person. But rather than finding freedom, rest, and peace, we are left with our shame and failures. Maggie Combs talks to us about the problem with “you do you.” This isn’t the answer! Instead, she encourages us to practice daily repentance and find true forgiveness in Christ! Ep 89Ask Us Anything (Fall 2020)

How should Christians view an eco-friendly lifestyle? How should we view makeup? How can we witness to someone who thinks she’s saved? What even is a good way to present the gospel? How can we keep Christ at the center of our marriages? What advice is there for a stay-at-home mom who feels like she’s losing her identity? You all submitted so many great questions! Some were serious while others were more fun and personal. However, we believe the gospel can be applied to any and all of our questions! Ep 88Worshiping Together with Jeremy Schmucker

There are so many different churches out there. Different denominations with varying musical styles and traditions. What does healthy, corporate worship look like? This goes beyond musical preferences. When we go to Scripture, we see many elements that should make up a corporate worship service. We are joined by Jeremy Schmucker, and he points us to God’s Word and helps us see that God tells His people how He wants to be worshipped. There is something special about physically coming together to worship! Ep 87Learning the Voice of God

Can we hear God’s voice today? Yes, we can! It may not be an audible voice from a burning bush, but believers can absolutely know the voice of God. This is because God primarily speaks through Scripture. As we study the Bible, we familiarize ourselves with the tone of His voice. In a world full of voices, we need to do something to ensure that God’s voice is loudest and clearest. We talk about how we can do that practically, and how we can allow God’s voice to be a guiding voice in our everyday lives. Ep 86God’s Design for Sex

Sex is everywhere. Movies, TV shows, music, books, advertisements, and even children’s resources! Our culture says sex is one’s right to enjoy whenever, however, and with whomever one pleases. Many think the Christian view of sex is oppressive or repressive. Some Christians think sex is dirty and a necessary evil for procreation. But what does the Bible say? What is God’s design for sex? What sexual ethic does Scripture promote? We need to go to God’s Word to have a healthy vision for sex! Ep 85God’s Word and Our Emptiness with Nancy Guthrie

Have you ever felt empty? Loneliness, disappointment, dissatisfaction with life, fear of an unknown future. We all feel some sense of emptiness on this side of eternity, and sometimes, our emptiness can cause us to feel despair or beyond God’s reach. Today, we are joined by Nancy Guthrie, and she reminds us that emptiness never stopped God from doing His glorious work. We can even see the theme of emptiness traced throughout the Bible! Ep 84Should We Fear the End Times?

Endless waves of hard things going on in the world can cause us to ask if we are living in the end times. What actually leads up to the end? Should we be afraid? Some of us fear increased suffering. Others have a fear of missing out on experiences. Many fear impending judgment! But believers can face the end times with a deep anticipation for the return of Christ. No matter what we believe (premillenialism, postmillenialism, amillienialsm), knowing Jesus can return at any moment should compel us to live differently. Ep 83How to Disagree Well with Others

Disagreements are hard, but they’re part of each of our realities due to our fallen nature. Maybe it’s a political or social issue. Maybe it’s a doctrinal issue. Maybe it’s a matter of personal conscience. There are a thousand things we can disagree on with others! So is there a way to disagree well? We believe there is, but it requires hard work. It requires humility and engaging in conversations with the goal of listening and learning. It requires acknowledging that we’re limited beings. And most importantly, it requires keeping the gospel central. Ep 82Engaging with Our Emotions in a Healthy Way with Courtney Reissig

Feelings can be complicated. Even within Christian circles, we can get mixed messages about how we should deal with our emotions. Today, Courtney Reissig reminds us that believers can truly engage with their emotions in a healthy + biblical way! This includes the “hard” feelings we may experience like grief, anxiety, and loneliness. We should feel something about the brokenness of this world! We don’t have to stuff our feelings or be enslaved to them. God’s Word can inform and shape our feelings! Ep 81What is the Role of the Holy Spirit Today?

Who is the Holy Spirit, and what all does He do? Some people overemphasize the gifts of the Spirit, and others neglect the Spirit altogether. We need to have a biblical vision and understanding of the Holy Spirit in order to not miss out on what He has to offer us and to ascribe Him the honor/worship He deserves! The Spirit is an amazing gift, and He plays a tremendous role in the lives of believers. Let us respond to the Spirit, be filled by the Spirit, and walk in step with Him! “I’ll pray for you.” How many times have we said this and neglected to follow through? Can we actually develop a habit of praying for others? Today, we are joined by Maryanne Challies Helms, and she reminds us that we can be people who faithfully pray for others. Ep 79When Our Sins are Exposed

Exposure of our personal sins is humbling, hard, and sometimes painful. Often, we find that we try to cover up our sins or ignore them! Or maybe we’re just not aware of some sins lingering in our hearts! We can tend to deny or undermine our sins because we don’t want to feel shame or judgment. But in Christ, we believe that it’s a mercy for our sins to be exposed! It’s an invitation to turn our eyes to the cross, practice repentance, and be purified. This is a vital part of growing in godliness! Ep 78The Value of Women with Elyse Fitzpatrick & Eric Schumacher

Is a woman’s worth different than a man’s worth? Does Christianity devalue women? Elyse and Eric show us in their book how Scripture actually holds a high view of women as evidenced by the indispensable role women play in God’s overall plan of redemption. They continue their work by engaging in open and respectful dialogue on this charged topic of the value of women. We talk about why there are misperceptions about women inside and outside of the church, how we can practically celebrate women, and more. Ep 77The Gospel for All People

The gospel is not just for a certain demographic. We can know this in our heads, but sometimes, the way we live communicates a different message. Maybe we find ourselves withholding the gospel from people who are different from us. Maybe we think some people are “too far gone” in their sins to hear the Good News. Maybe we’ve been deeply hurt and don’t want the grace of God to lead the offending party to repentance. We can forget the gospel, and that it is indeed for all people! Ep 76Overcoming Negative Body Image

Many of us silently wrestle with negative body image issues. We feel pride or shame in how we look or don’t look. While it’s true that God looks at our hearts and cares for the eternal well-being of our souls, He also made us as whole persons with physical bodies. What God said is “good” became distorted with sin. But the gospel offers us true freedom even here. Jesus can overcome the heart issues related to body image. We can find our worth, not in our outward appearances, but in our union with Christ! Ep 75Walking with Others Through Suffering and Grief

Someone you know is grieving or suffering. This is true for all of us. And the thing is, we want to be people who love and encourage others well in all seasons of life, even the hard ones. But we wonder: “What if we say the wrong thing? What if we make them even sadder? What if it’s really awkward? Could we really offer any sort of comfort?” In this episode, we get really practical about things we can say and things we can do when we’re walking with others through their grief and suffering. Abide. We use it as our “word of the year”. We see it on coffee mugs, necklaces and baseball caps. But what does abiding really mean? How do we abide? What does it look like to abide in the Lord in this day and age? We are joined by Kristin Schmucker, and she helps us see how abiding is simply being a disciple. It’s not about trying harder out of our own strength, but trusting in the person and work of Christ. It’s an overflow of our position in Christ as His beloved. It’s a means to true rest. Ep 72When Comparison is a Good Thing

Does comparison always lead to envy and competition? Is it really “the thief of joy”? Scripture offers us a different form of comparison: imitation. We are called to imitate those who imitate Christ. This is a positive form of comparison that helps us in our pursuit of godliness. It isn’t about getting validation. It is acknowledging our weaknesses, identifying believers who are strong in those areas, and learning from them in order to grow in Christlikeness. The goal is more of Christ and His glory. Ep 71Teach Me to Pray

We know we should pray. We want a thriving prayer life. But where do we start? What do we say? Our prayer lives feel rote and dry! We wish someone would teach us to pray. Good news! Jesus gave us the model to experience an enriching prayer life in Scripture! The Lord’s prayer has 6 petitions (3 God-centered petitions followed by 3 need-centered petitions), and these can serve as a framework for our prayers. Prayer is an important spiritual discipline to intimately commune with God! Ep 70Learning from Our Differences with Kristie Anyabwile

Our world is diverse. People come from different cultures, are shaped by different experiences, and have different preferences and passions. Even within the body of Christ, there are a wide range of personalities! While differences can be good, they can also create tension that can give way to conflict/division. Kristie Anyabwile joins us today and offers us practical advice as to how we can embrace our differences, navigate the tension that can arise from our differences, and actually learn from those in the body who are different from us. Ep 69Joy in the Mundane

Do you live for the weekend? Or the next vacation? For most of us, our days are ordinary and filled with monotonous, everyday things. We can feel weary, unfulfilled, overwhelmed, or stressed because of the mundane things that fill up our days. We are tempted to go into auto-pilot. But how does the gospel inform the way we approach the mundane things of life like paying the bills, doing homework, cleaning the house, and changing diapers? We believe that in Christ, we can experience fullness of joy. Ep 68Walking Through Seasons of Spiritual Dryness

On today’s episode, we talk about the times in our spiritual lives where we feel like we’re in a drought. Maybe God’s presence feels withdrawn. Maybe we don’t find delight in reading and studying His Word. Maybe we don’t feel passionate about God and the things of God like we once did. We may wonder: why do we experience these times of spiritual dryness? Is it an indicator of a lack of faith or is it something all believers go through at some point on their faith journeys? Today, we talk all about spiritual dryness. We discuss the various reasons we can experience these seasons, and how we can faithfully walk through them. How Can We Overcome Burnout?

bonus

On today’s bonus episode, we get really practical. In Episode 67, we discussed what burn out is and offered preventative measures to avoid burnout. However, we realize that many of us are currently in a state of burnout! So then the question is: what practical steps can we take to overcome this state of chronic stress? In this short bonus episode, we discuss how incorporating rhythms of confession is important for all of us. If we’re in a state of burnout, we need to start by confessing that we’ve been living out of our own strength! Then we can take practical steps to respect God’s good limits for us. We need to intentionally yield to God’s design of tending to our physical needs, which means we need to consider the very real aspects of diet, exercise, and sleep. We pray this episode and its practical content is helpful to those currently in burnout. Disclaimer: many symptoms of burnout mimic symptoms related to anxiety and depression. It is important to note that clinical anxiety and depression are not synonymous to burnout. Please consult a biblical counselor in your area for additional help, if needed. Ep 67How to Prevent Burnout as a Believer

On today’s episode, we talk about burnout. This is something that many of us have faced, are facing, or dread we will face in the future. Burnout is a state of chronic stress. It can be described as feeling exhausted, stressed, overwhelmed, spent, and just plain done. It can come up in many different ways and in many different contexts, and it’s something any personality type can experience. But here’s the thing: our theology has direct implications to how we navigate this issue of burnout. In this episode, we explore what Scripture says about who God is and who we are in light of Him, and we discuss how those truths impact how we live. Believers don’t have to live in a state of burnout! We can go to God’s Word and see how He has designed His people to live on this side of glory. The Bible helps us live this Christian life by helping us establish a good pace; offering true nourishment; building endurance; and leading to true rest. We can prevent burnout and finish our race well. Come join our conversation! Ep 64The Beauty of Racial and Cultural Diversity in the Church with Aubrey Coleman

Diversity is a beautiful idea from God. His image bearers are marked with racial and cultural differences. But the gospel is for people of every tribe, nation, and tongue, and we can get a taste of heaven when there is true unity amongst diversity within the body of Christ. But there are natural challenges we face! We are joined by Aubrey Coleman, and she offers great encouragement and practical suggestions on how we can pursue unity specifically regarding racial and cultural differences. Ep 63Pursuing Biblical Friendships that Thrive

Deep, meaningful friendships. We all want them! God actually designed us to live and grow in relationship to Him and each other. The Bible offers a vision of friendship that goes beyond doing things 50/50. It goes beyond affirming, venting, and commiserating. Christian friendship is an eternal bond offered by the blood of Christ. We serve each other sacrificially, help each other grow in holiness, etc. But how do we cultivate these friendships? Ep 62Is God Really Trustworthy?

Has anyone ever told you to “trust God”? The assumption behind that phrase is that God is trustworthy. But how can we know that He will make good on His promises? Can we really trust that He will be faithful and work all things for our good? We can find ourselves asking these questions especially in times of suffering. We can trust God because He is a covenant-making and covenant-keeping God. Covenants show us how God relates to us, and why we can have a sure and confident hope in Jesus. Ep 61Learning from Those Who Are Ahead with Hunter Beless

What does it look like to be discipled and to make disciples? What if you’re in a busy season with littles? Does it have to be a weekly coffee date with the Bible open? What’s the fruit of opening up our lives, mess in all? Hunter Beless joins us and shares how she has been personally discipled and how that has impacted her own mission to disciple others. She shares how her mentors taught her to imitate Christ, apply the gospel to every circumstance, and depend on the grace of God. What Does Forgiveness Look Like?

bonus

What is the evidence that true forgiveness has taken place in our hearts and lives? What does it practically look like to extend forgiveness? Forgiveness isn’t just “forgive and forget”. There are internal elements and external elements of forgiveness. Our thoughts, emotions, and actions are all influenced by the exchange of forgiveness! Ep 60Why Should We Forgive Others?

Do we forgive others for our good or the good of others? Is it for our own peace of mind or is it to foster peace with others? What does God’s Word have to say regarding the “why” behind forgiveness between people? God’s people are compelled by His love, grace, and forgiveness to extend love, grace, and forgiveness to others. It is a mark of a believer to have an ongoing attitude of forgiveness. But this doesn’t mean it’s easy: we need God’s help! Ep 59Freedom from “What If?”

What if the worst case scenario happens? What if our family contracts COVID-19? What if the lump is cancer? What if I lose my job? How do we walk by faith in the midst of life’s many “what if’s”? We believe the gospel offers us freedom from living with the “what if’s” ever before us. Sometimes, tragedy does strike. Our world may experience a pandemic. But God’s people respond, not in fear, but in faith. We look back to God’s past faithfulness, and we look forward to His future faithfulness. We are not “what if” people; we are “even if” people. Ep 57The Beauty of Daily Dependence

Our culture values independence and strength. We also find ourselves living out of our own strength so often. We know we should “depend on God”, but what does that look like practically? We have to remember that God is self-sufficient. He is dependent on nothing and no one. And truly, this is good news for us! In fact, He created us to be dependent on Him. There is beauty in daily dependence on God and His church! Ep 56When Church Hurts with Jana White

Church hurt is real. It’s real pain and heartache. Why does it even happen? Though we love the local church, we also know that it is made up of redeemed sinners. This opens up the possibility for fellow believers to hurt one another. Sin is devastating! Jana White shares her personal story of church hurt, and she talks about the healing process. She offers encouragement to those who have experienced this type of pain and also offers thoughts on how the church can come alongside those who are hurting. Ep 55Praying Scripture

Prayer is how we experience intimacy with God, but many of us struggle to pray. We pray sporadically throughout the day, but our prayers lack depth. We feel like we don’t have the words; maybe we lack desire. What can we do? Praying Scripture is a beautiful way to deepen our prayer lives. It keeps our prayers from being self-centered; it helps us understand and apply Scripture. Though our prayers are personal, we aren’t confined to our own words. God invites us to pray His words back to Him! Ep 54Hope in Suffering with Katherine and Jay Wolf

A massive stroke at 26-years old. Their world turned upside down. One minute they thought they were headed toward a certain future: Jay would graduate law school in 3-weeks, and Katherine would continue her pursuit of acting/modeling while caring for their 6-month old son. The next minute, Katherine is in a risky surgery that required the removal of half of her cerebellum. Though their story is one of overwhelming loss, it’s also one of overwhelming love. It’s a story where the living hope of Christ anchors and heals. It’s a story of redemption. Ep 53Comparing Our Spiritual Gifts

Have you ever thought, “I wish I could teach the Bible like she does” or “Why didn’t God give me a voice like that to lead worship”? Unhealthy comparison can come up in many ways regarding our spiritual gifts and abilities. Ep 52The Truth about Gossip

Gossip. We’ve all experienced it; we can all agree that it’s unkind. But do we really understand the ramifications of gossip? Gossiping is saying what you don’t need to say, whether or not it’s true. It is always harmful and never helpful. It is unloving. And the most important truth about gossip is this: gossip is sin. Yet, we justify gossip for many reasons. Maybe we call it “seeking counsel” or “asking for prayer”. Is it even possible to not gossip? Ep 51Being Married to an Unbeliever with Sheila Dougal

Being married to an unbelieving spouse is a reality of so many. It’s been Sheila’s reality for 26 years and counting. Today, she graciously answers the tough questions like, “Have you thought about leaving the marriage?” and “What does submission look like?” She points us to God’s Word, which speaks directly to this topic and shares how the local church can come alongside people in these situations.
