S1 Ep 240Mistakes We’ve Made in Bible Study: Reading with our Heart and Not Our Head

This is the second episode in our Mistakes We've Made in Bible Study series and we're talking about the mistake of reading with our heart and not our head. What do we mean by reading with our heart and not our head? We mean that we decide what Scripture means by feeling only and not by fact. While our hearts should absolutely be engaged in Bible reading, when we read with only our hearts and not our heads, we run the risk of an incomplete or incorrect interpretation. And that can lead us to misunderstand who God is and how He relates to His people. So… learn from our mistake! Come listen to this episode and let us teach you how we’ve learned to read with both our heart and our head. Ep 231Hope and Help for Handling Anger

Anger is something we don’t often want to talk about. We can minimize our own struggles with anger, or we can neglect to see anger in our own hearts. However, we believe it is extremely important to discuss how anger impacts our personal relationships and our relationship with the Lord. In this conversation, Shelby and Krystal address some key questions: is anger a sin? Can it be controlled? How can we identify and work through our anger? How does the gospel inform our perspective and our response to anger? Ep 230Growing in Understanding Towards People With Disabilities w/Laura Wifler

Chances are that unless disability is a part of your daily life, you haven’t thought much about how to grow in understanding towards people with disabilities. And it is for that reason that we welcome Laura Wifler onto the Daily Grace Podcast today to talk about this topic. Laura is the mother of five year old Eden who was diagnosed with developmental disabilities at a very young age. Laura candidly shares the fears and joys her family has experienced since Eden’s diagnosis. She encourages us to see people with disabilities as people who are “like me” because they are made in the image of God. She gives practical tips for loving people in our spheres who have disabilities and tips for walking alongside parents of children with disabilities. Above all, Laura reminds us that the value of a person is not dependent on their abilities. All people are worthy of dignity and love. Ep 229If God is Good, Why Do Bad Things Happen? w/ Michele Cushatt

We are often afraid to ask questions that have the potential to destabilize our faith. We worry the answers will reveal that God is not real or that God is not good. One of those questions is, “if God is good, why do bad things happen?” In today’s episode, Shelby chats with Michele, who has walked through three decades of suffering and trauma about this exact question. Michele helps us understand that the presence of sin and suffering doesn’t diminish the goodness of God. And she helps us understand that God has provided the greatest good in Jesus. Even when evil presses in from all sides, the gospel gives us real, lasting, eternal hope. Michele also speaks to the person who is feeling weak in their faith and needs the encouragement to keep going in the midst of suffering and pain. If you struggle to make sense of God’s goodness in a broken world or you feel like your faith is faltering and you’re in need of a reminder of God’s goodness towards you—this episode is for you. I pray that it helps you to see the goodness of God in Christ and the glorious hope offered in salvation. Ep 227Loving Hard to Love People

In this episode, Shelby and Krystal talk about what it looks like to navigate relationships that we have with hard to love people. Rather than avoid every person that irritates or bothers us, how can we lean into the gospel and allow God's love to be reflected in the way we love and serve others? As we chat through this topic, we will encourage you to remember how Christ loved us when we were "hard to love." We will look at Scripture to see how we can practically love hard to love people even when it feels impossible. Today’s episode was all about how the gospel helps us to make peace with our past. Our pasts hold a lot for each of us—good memories, sad seasons, hard times, and everything in between. The way we view our past has implications for us in the present and for our future. It can hinder us or help us in our spiritual growth. It can even dictate how you respond to others in times of stress. In this conversation, we talk about the power of the gospel to help us make peace with our past. Ep 221Unmet Expectations: Gospel Hope for Disappointment in Marriage and Singleness

Since this episode releases on Valentine’s Day, we decided to do something extra special! We have not one but TWO interviews in this special episode! First, we talk with our husbands to discuss what it looks like to honor God and one another in marriage as we navigate unmet expectations. Then, we interviewed Melissa Zaldivar about expectations in singleness. I know the temptation is to listen to the part that applies to where you are at, but I encourage you to listen to both parts! Chances are if you are single, you have a married friend. If you are married, you likely have a single friend. (If you don’t, step out of your comfort zone and develop new friendships—you won’t regret it!) Ep 220Handling Everyday Life While Grieving with Melissa Zaldivar

“We tell the stories of Scripture over and over because they anchor us and remind us of what's true when things get blurry.” This is a quote from Melissa Zaldivar’s book titled, “What Cannot Be Lost: How Jesus Holds Us Together When Life is Falling Apart.” We loved talking with Melissa on this week’s episode as we discussed grief and loss. In her book, Melissa tells the story of losing her friend Jill to cancer as she weaves together threads of the life of Louisa May Alcott, the author of “Little Women.” It is a beautiful, hopeful, and heavy story of how Jesus can meet us in whatever situation we find ourselves in. In today’s conversation, we talk about how to rightly handle the Scriptures when faced with loss, how to help others that are in grief, and where hope is found even as grief lingers. Ep 219Navigating Success and Failure Well w/Katie Davidson

We might try to avoid it but it’s inevitable—we all fail at something at some point. No matter if we are in the workforce, self-employed, at home, or in ministry, we face failure. But we will have moments of success as well, which in some ways can be even more difficult to handle. Navigating both of those with grace can be a challenge in different ways! How can we respond well as believers? In today’s conversation, Shelby and I invited staff writer Katie Davidson to join us as we talk about how to navigate success and failure. If you struggle to receive success with humility or failure with grace, we encourage you to join us in this conversation. We hope that it will provide you with some practical and Biblical wisdom to rightly navigate these situations in your everyday life. In the good and bad, whether we succeed or fail, we know that we can fix our eyes on God who is good and faithful and wise. Ep 218Identity & Roles: Finding Our Worth in Christ, Not in the Titles We Hold

In today's episode, we discuss roles and our identity. It's a topic that listeners have messaged us about but it's also one that feels very relevant to Shelby and myself right now. We want to be faithful in the roles that God has entrusted to us, but we also don't want to find our primary identity in them. We attempt to untangle some of the complexities as we look to our identity in Christ and see what God's Word has to say about who we are as believers. Sign up for the Daily Grace Podcast Newsletter and receive the free resource "Scripture for Every Season.” Time Stamps: :51 - Favorite things 3:23 - Why talk about identity and roles? 7:55 - Finding our identity in the roles we have 9:32 - Finding our identity in the roles we don’t have 15:36 - Scripture on identity in Christ 21:02 - How fulfilling our roles can be an overflow of our identity in Christ 23:51 - Prayer prompts and gospel encouragement Questions to Consider: How do you react when success in your role is threatened? Do you still see your need for God when everything is going well in your roles? Or do you pull away from God because you are being satisfied by your roles? Does your contentment depend on getting a role that you don't currently have or keeping a role that you do currently have? Are you able to weather failure and criticism in your roles well or do these things crush you? Prayer Prompts: Ask God to help you glorify Him in your current roles. Thank God for the roles He has given you and thank Him for his goodness and sovereignty in the roles that you don't have. Ask God to increase your joy and contentment with where He has you right now. Pray that the Spirit would convict you when you're tempted to place your identity anywhere other than Christ himself. Ep 216The Faithfulness of God in Our Testimonies w/Afshin Ziafat

What’s your story? We all have one. As believers, God has crafted a story for each of us, bringing us into salvation through the work of His Son, Jesus. Your story may be one of faithful Christian parents that brought you up in the ways of the Lord. Your story may be one of wandering. Perhaps you became a Christian later in life after years of rebellion. Whatever your story entails, there is a common thread that we all share: the faithfulness of God. In today’s episode, Krystal chats with her pastor, Afshin Ziafat. Though he was raised in a Muslim household, Afshin came to know the Lord in his teenage years. Afshin has an incredible testimony and has the opportunity to share it all other the world. But in sharing his story, Afshin is clear to point out that it is a story of God’s faithfulness and not his own. Come chat with us about the faithfulness of God in our testimonies. Ep 212When to Walk Away From Toxic People w/Gary Thomas

On today’s podcast episode, Gary Thomas talks to us about how to determine if the difficult people in our lives are toxic people and what to do if we discover they are toxic. Toxic is a cultural buzzword when it comes to relationships, but Gary doesn’t allow culture to define this word. Instead, he uses Scripture to explain to us the traits of a toxic person and relationship. He also shows us how Jesus handled difficult and toxic people. It may be surprising to you to learn that Jesus both walked away from people and let people walk away from Him many times in the gospels. Ep 208Still Waiting: When God Doesn’t Give You What You Want w/ Ann Swindell

Are you in a place of waiting? Do you feel like there is seemingly no end in sight? In this episode, author and speaker Ann Swindell joins us to discuss what it looks like to wait and trust in Jesus. Ann shares about her own season of waiting and how it has led her back to the truth of God’s Word time and time again. And yet, we often become stressed or overwhelmed when it comes to giving and receiving gifts. Ep 203Politics and the Gospel: Public Witness in a Politically Crazy World w/ Dr. Patrick Schreiner

What are the two topics you aren’t supposed to discuss at family gatherings? Most of us would immediately guess religion and politics, and some of us may intentionally stay away from these topics in public. But what if we could step into the political sphere in a way that honors God? In this episode, Dr. Patrick Schreiner makes a compelling case for why we should consider engaging in politics as believers. Shelby and Krystal chat with Dr. Schreiner about how the gospel changes the way we view politics and offers practical tips on engaging in politics in a way that honors Christ as King. The opinions of guests on the Daily Grace podcast do not represent the opinions of The Daily Grace Co., and we do not necessarily endorse the resources that they recommend or mention on the show. We believe it is valuable to hear from a variety of guests, even if we do not agree in all areas.
