Building Mental Toughness for Families w/ Joe De Sena

My guest today is Joe De Sena. Joe was one of my first guests when I first started this episode 6 years ago. If you are a Spartan Racer, you might know Joe. He is the CEO of Spartan Race. The basis of his company is the foundation that we as humans cannot reach our potential until we have gone through a struggle or a test. It's what he calls, purposeful suffering. Coming from a childhood where he had nowhere to learn, only his own, and had to figure out how to make it. Joe believes his success came from his purposeful suffering philosophy. This is one of my favorite episodes, no doubt. Joe shares about "Mental Toughness for Families - 10 Rules for Resilience", his new book and we talk about some of those rules on this episode. Choosing The Life We Lead w/ Craig Risoli

Craig Risoli is a good friend and Dad Edge Accelerator business matermind member. He is a husband of 10 years to Hailey, father of 3, veteran and the proud owner of High Speed Daddy, an epic backpack for dads company. He built his company around his family schedule as a stay at home dad, not the other way around. A lot of men choose to let life manage them. That is unfortunate, because that stresses and burns them out. Today we will be talking about taking initiative, making decisions and stop letting things hold us up and learn along the way. Many of us are stopped by analysis paralysis. Craig is an engineer, so I ask him all things about making decisions. Show Notes: http://www.thedadedge.com/friday34

When it comes to conflict, do you find yourself frustrated or lost? Relationships is not something that we are taught. We grow up and we are taught different skills, trigonometry, social studies, but rarely how to resolve conflict. And it's really unfortunate because think of what our marriages and relationships could look like if we knew how to resolve conflict and how we could actually do it from an objective standpoint to where when we try to resolve conflict just normally in day to day. My guest today, Jayson Gaddis, a licensed family therapist knows exactly how to do it. He wrote a book, How To Get to Zero and we talk about conflict resolution with those we love the most. Permission to Dream with Chris Gardner

"Don't ever let somebody tell you you can't do something, not even me. All right! You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can't do something themselves, they want to tell you you can't do it, you want something, go get it. Period." Chris Gardner is the CEO of Happyness and he loves his job. his first book The Pursuit of Happyness became a New York Times best-selling book as well as Washington Post #1 bestseller and it has been translated in over 40 languages. That book was the story of Chris's life and he always thought of it as a way to project onto the world that anybody can do anything no matter what the obstacles are, no matter what the adversity is because we all embrace the power of choice. His book also inspired a film that became critically acclaimed, iconic and perhaps more relevant today than when it was first released. That movie was The Pursuit of Happyness. Will Smith played the part of Chris Gardner, he receive a Golden Globe Screen Actors Guild award and Academy Award nomination for his performance. The first and most important decision Chris ever made in his life is that his children would always know who their father was. The second most important decision that he ever made in his life is that he would become world-class as to whatever he did in his life. This decision led him to an uber-successful career on Wall Street. Chris shares some serious powerful lessons: #1: how we can make powerful pivots in our lives when we're confronted with adversity and Challenge and how we can show up as a more empowering and compassionate father than we ever thought possible even when we're dealing with everyday stress and the obstacles in our lives and finally that our circumstances do not define our future success.

Life Principles and the Joy of Fatherhood with Matthew McConaughey

Alright, alright, alright is the famous phrase coined by the illustrious Matthew McConaughey. He is an actor, father, husband, and author. When Matthew was younger, his father instilled in him three principles for life – "Don't say can't," "love, don't hate," "tell the truth, don't lie" and he has carried these principles throughout his life. Matthew McConaughey has acted in over 50 films and is the co-founder of the Just Keep Livin' Foundation alongside his wife, Camila. The two have three children and currently reside in Austin, Texas. Throughout his life, Matthew has learned that putting the energy into your family will produce results far greater than if you go it alone. He recalls his wife saying, "You go, we go" when they were deciding whether or not to have children. Since having three children, Matthew has been cultivating a closeness with his children that leaves a legacy for years to come. In his book Greenlights, Matthew talks about how he wants his life to read like an unfiltered, unedited version of himself. His whole life has been dedicated to this persona of an actor that everyone is familiar with. Leaving a legacy is all about the raw, unedited moments of our lives; the ones where we're not perfect and we do make mistakes. These are the moments that define who we are, not who everyone else thinks we are.

The Gifts In Life That Come From Struggles with Nikki Sixx

My guest today is Nikki Sixx and I have to tell you, this is by far one of the best interviews and guests I've had on the podcast. Nikki Sixx is one of the most respected, recognizable and entrepreneurial icons in the music industry. He founded Motley Crew and has been sober for 21 years. He is incredibly passionate about his craft and wide open about his life in rock and roll. He was an All-American kid growing up. He loved to hunt, fishing, he chased girls, played football, but underneath of all of it, there was this burning desire for more, and that was music. How To Cultivate an Environment of Psychological Safety with Jarrod Haning

Jarrod Hanning is a father, husband and mindset coach for high level entrepreneurs. For the past 10 years, he has been working with high level entrepreneurs and successful business owners to help them actually work less and teach them how to optimize their time and also leverage the proper mindset to go out and live a fulfilling life. In this episode we talk about building and cultivating an environment where our kids can come and talk to us without instilling fear to the point where they shutdown on us, but also being able to teach them lessons of boundaries and consequences around those actions. I challenge Jarrod a lot in how he approaches certain teachings. I also share a couple of stories of things that I've gone through lately with my teenages and how I've gone about that. Parenting is not perfect, but I think you get a lot of clarity from this episode. Sal Frisella is a husband, father of three children, and the President of 1st Phorm Supplements, which was founded by his brother Andy. He was a Minor League Baseball player who was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and played for the Single A New Jersey Cardinals. Sal went from a baseball player to selling copiers to medical sales where he worked for Johnson and Johnson as a successful sales agent. After these phases of his life, Sal realized that these jobs were not meant for him. Sal knew that he had to take a chance on himself and live the best possible life ever. Becoming the President of 1stPhorm gave him the best life that he could want. However, Sal's goals weren't always clear. The fear of rejection and fear of the word "no" often held him back during his younger years. Yet, fear didn't stop him from trying. Sal's success in his life can attest to this because even through doubt and others' negative opinions, he was able to push through and achieve the life he wanted. Sometimes, we are so afraid of rejection that we live with the regret of not trying at all. Take advantage of every single day and live as if it were your last, or you'll live with regret. The greatest strikeout of life is never stepping up to the plate. In order to live a fulfilling life, we have to embrace fear and live life to the fullest. Great Leaders Communicate and Great Communicators Lead with Scott McCarthy

Scott McCarthy has been in the military for over 20 years and is a leadership expert. His leadership journey started when he was young and had the drive to take control of everything that he needed to be planned. Transferring these skills into the Canadian Army, Scott enrolled as a Logistics Officer in 2001 when he was selected to attend the prestigious Royal Military College of Canada. At the age of 24, Scott commanded an Army transport platoon comp comprising of 80 soldiers. At 33, he was selected to command a Logistics squadron of 200 members. As you can see, Scott knows how to compete as a high-performing leader and knows that leadership is a cycle. He understands how to build high-performing powerful teams, how to delegate as a leader to be a force multiplier, and is proficient in setting goals for high-achieving leaders. Today's show is about the simplicity of leadership and communication within marriage. We need to be clear about things that we want as men and husbands while also being servant leaders to our wives and what they need, want, and desire. A lot of men live in two camps when it comes to communication. We either throw ourselves on the sword for the sake of our wives and family, while feeling empty. We end up neglecting ourselves in a noble, selfless way without realizing it. On the other hand, we are extremely selfish and only think about ourselves. The goal of today's show is to explain the common ground between both of those camps where we support our families while also communicating what our needs are as a husband and father. Interrupting the Drift with Shane Achey

Shane Achey is a husband, father, and part of the Dad Edge Alliance Leadership team. Today, we are going to be talking about how we can handle the adversity and unexpected curveballs that come our way as fathers. We are also going to be talking about interrupting the drift. For those of you who don't know what the drift is, it's the process of going through the motions daily. Interrupting the drift is when we step out of our daily cycle, and we step into learning the skills to connect with our wives and kids and become a leader in our businesses. The problem with this is that we are highly trained in our careers and overwhelmingly untrained in interrupting the drift. What we need is a community, such as the Dad Edge Alliance, that teaches us these core values so we can live legendary lives. Today, we are going to be talking about how Jocko takes charge of his team and family by applying the same tools in both aspects of his life. He's also going to be talking about why it's critical to distance yourself from chaos, mayhem, and our own emotions to make rational decisions. He's going to talk about how even though you may not know the right course of action for your kids, you shouldn't force decisions on them. Finally, Jocko says you must explain to your kids the why behind everything you ask of them. The Power of the Word No with Chris Voss

Chris Voss is the former chief hostage negotiator for the FBI, the CEO and founder of the Black Swan Group, and is the best-selling author of the book titled Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended On It. Chris Voss has over 25 years experience as a negotiator for the FBI. He has been featured in TIME Magazine, Business Insider, Entrepreneur, Inc. Magazine, Fast Company, Fortune, Washington Post, Success Magazine, Squawk Box, CNN, and ABC News. Today, we are going to be talking about the psychology of communication and negotiation. We are also going to be talking about why you want the person you're negotiating with to say no first instead of yes. Chris Voss is going to share with us how to make people feel safe, protected, and in control, and ready to move forward when they are given the space to say "no." He tells us that without action, an agreement is useless. Voss also teaches us the three yesses in agreement situations - commitment, confirmation, and counterfeit. He's also going to go over the skill of tactical empathy. Tactical empathy is not sympathy, and it doesn't have to end in agreement. You being empathetic to someone in your life doesn't mean you agree with where they're at, nor does it equal sympathy. Voss also goes over how to use your voice tone and how people appreciate integrity despite the outcome of the discussion. He goes over the difference between someone telling you "you're right" versus "that's right." There is specific psychology that underlies the meaning in the tone of voice that Chris will be sharing with us today.
