S1 Ep 45In a Mass-Shooting, "Your Instincts Just Take Over." - A Survivor's Lesson

E

This video discusses sensitive topics, including gun violence, mass shootings, and surviving those violent incidents. If you are triggered in any way, please stop the video and seek counseling from a mental health professional. America is suffering through a bloody and ongoing epidemic for which there is no vaccine. This week's episode analyzes mass shootings and speaks to a woman who survived the worst mass shooting in US history with her children. You may have thought about what you would do during a mass shooting, but what do you do after? Physical wounds aren't the only wounds bullets can cause. As we hear, mental trauma can create scars that last a lifetime. Listen to the first-hand account of Stacie Armentrout. She was injured but lived through the Las Vegas mass shooting in 2017. The bloodshed at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Vegas is the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. After the lone gunman stopped firing, 58 people died, and more than 850 were injured. Stacie was in the middle of it with her daughters. What do you think in the middle of shooting may not be what your body lets you do? "Fight or flight" isn't always something you have physical control over. "Locks are for honest people." Collier and Stacie discuss the bloodlust killers have and question what can be done to stop these people beforehand. Could you be going to work every day and sitting next to a potential mass murderer and not knowing it? Do you know the signs to look for? Stacie and Collier explore the importance of making those answers more mainstream. Shootings and traumatic events can trigger emotional breakdowns in survivors. Hear why Stacie says it's okay to experience those feelings and why it's essential to acknowledge that sometimes we can't control everything. S1 Ep 44The Pleasure Narcissists Seek: Exploring Ghislaine Maxwell's Crime

E

Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted assistant to infamous sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein, was just sentenced to 20 years in prison for ruining countless girls' lives. Collier discusses the narcissism that runs through Maxwell's actions and her defense. Collier also reflects on the similarities his father shares with criminals like Maxwell. PLEASE fill out this brief audience SURVEY Collier explains why there should be no sympathy for people like Ghislaine Maxwell. He explains how people, even from affluent and privileged backgrounds, can turn to a life of horrendous crime. Doubling down on their crimes and mistakes: why convicted sex offenders and violent criminals often believe they've done nothing wrong. Grooming children takes all sorts of forms, but the main premise is someone coercing kids to do what they want. Collier describes how he believes his father was trying to groom him in an effort for Collier to take back his testimony that put his father in jail. In her testimony, Ghislaine Maxwell attempted to make herself look like the victim without recognizing the real victims - all of the innocent girls she helped traffic sexually. Collier shares a letter from his father to show the striking similarity between criminals. How do you deal with a narcissistic parent? The trauma they inflict on their children is horrible, but as Collier explains, the trauma they inflict on others can be even worse. S1 Ep 41Answering Your TikTok Questions: "Did my grandma know about my mother's murder?"

E

In episode 41 of Moving Past Murder, host Collier Landry answers some of his TikTok audience's questions in an open and honest conversational episode of the show. Collier also takes a moment to weigh in on some rumors circling Reddit and the Twittersphere, his opinion on the importance of "Conscious True Crime" consumerism, and how the actions of the few should not overshadow the many survivors and victims sharing their stories in their search for justice. The audience questions he responds to include the following: What are some things you've had to deal with because of what your father has done? Do you think your grandmother knew that your mom was dead? Or do you think she believed she had just up and left? I was an elementary school teacher; I would have believed you. I am so glad that cop (Lt. David Messmore) gave you his business card. Were you worried for your safety? S1 Ep 40Cash, Crime, and Sociopaths: Murderish Host Jami Rice Explores the Connection

E

Murderish host Jami Rice digs deep into the most disturbing true crimes and mysteries. In episode 40 of Moving Past Murder, she and Collier dish on their cases, compare sociopaths and discuss troubles with the true-crime business. They look at financial crimes and their connection to violent crimes. As well as how the criminal minds of a murderer and a thief aren’t so different. Why Collier really can’t stand criminals who prey on the innocent. The woman who stole $15 million from a bank with pie and a made-up persona. Jami discusses a bizarre true crime she’s now working to crack. Does the entertainment industry fetishize and even award certain types of criminals? Real-life con artist Anna Delvey had her story made into the Netflix special "Inventing Anna." The Tinder Swindler, Simon Leviev, tricked innocent women into giving him millions of dollars, and now he has his TV special about his devious life. Both Simon and Anna are making lots of money off their criminal behavior. Collier and Jami share their outrage. Are some of Collier’s podcast listeners reaching out and trying to contact his dad? What happens when the subjects of true-crime podcasts and their friends and families hear what podcast hosts say about them? The risk that comes with the job. Whatever happened to Collier’s dog that disappeared after his mom disappeared? The moment that caused Collier to break down. S1 Ep 39Threats and Plot Holes: The Radio Team that Interviewed a Murderer

E

Decades ago, Pastor Ernie Sanders looked into the murder of Collier’s mother and even interviewed his father live on the radio. In episode 39, we hear from radio host Pastor Ernie Sanders and his associate Jim Kloos on what they’ve uncovered about the case over the years. Did Collier’s father have help murdering his mother and hiding her body? For the first time, citizen investigators revealed the evidence they gathered, which led them to a shocking new possibility in the murder case. The bag over the head: as a doctor, Collier’s father would’ve known whether or not his wife was dead. So why did he bury her with a bag covering her head if that’s not how he killed her? Collier’s guests discuss how this fact could be a hole in the case against him. “You better stop coming down to Mansfield. Things are going to get rough for you down here.” The eerie warnings possible police officers allegedly gave to these amateur sleuths to stay away from the case. The two ways to go to prison: how you can choose to go by yourself or drag your whole family down with you. Ep 38Lies Caught on Tape: Uncovered Radio Interview with My Convicted Murderer Father

E

Back in the 90s, after Collier’s father was in prison for murdering his mother, he was interviewed live on a radio program called What’s Right What’s Left with Pastor Ernie Sanders. Speaking from prison, Collier’s father professed his innocence while discussing the conspiracies and crooked law enforcement he claims were out to frame him. For the very first time, Collier listens to his dad’s interview as he records this episode. Hear his responses and outrage to the lies his father peddles as he tries to clear his name by smearing Collier’s dead mother. A listener writes Collier about her trauma and struggles with an abusive relationship she fought to escape from. Hear what Collier’s father has to say about Collier just a few years after he took to the witness stand to help convict his father in his mother’s murder. Smuggling children, gold, and drugs on the black market? The wild explanations Collier’s father gave for his wife’s disappearance and death. Ep 32Terra Newell: The Aftermath of Ending A Life In Self-Defense

E

How do you move past taking the life of another human being, even when it is in self-defense? How do you cope with Survivor Shaming? What does moving past guilt & shame look like in the public eye? In last week's episode (Moving Past Murder - Episode #31), an interview with survivor Terra Newell, many of my audience members were left with a few unanswered questions after hearing Terra's story. Specifically, how Terra was able to move past ending the life of John Meehan, AKA “Dirty John." How do you deal with the public's scrutiny, moving past your guilt and shame, and the almighty "Survivor Shaming" from a self-righteous public audience? I recently met Terra in person this past weekend, and she was more than to share more of her journey toward healing and recovery. Episode highlights... •Coping with PTSD and the double trauma when someone tries to take your life and you take theirs in self-defense. •Dealing with "Survivor Shaming". Ep 30Sociopath Mashups: Chris Watts VS My Father, Dr. John F. Boyle

E

Collier breaks down how Chris Watts's behaviors and victim narcissism mirror his father's behavior, both in the courtroom and once in prison. The Watts family murders occurred in Frederick, CO, in the early morning of August 13, 2018. Christopher Watts admitted to murdering his pregnant wife Shanann by strangulation. He later admitted to murdering their daughters, four-year-old Bella and three-year-old Celeste, by smothering them with a blanket over their heads. On November 6, 2018, Watts pleaded guilty to multiple counts of first-degree murder as part of a plea deal and was sentenced to five life sentences without the possibility of parole. Episode highlights: • Distorted version of reality - how both men seem to live in a "Walter Mitty" world of their delusion. • The Victim Narcissist - Both men want the audience to feel sorry for them for all they have been through, completely ignoring the devastation and destruction they have created. • "You Have a Good Idea, let's go with that!" - AKA the "Grabbing at Straws" defense; both men seem to latch on to insane ideas to push the narrative for their defense. Ep 25Incest & Sexual Assault (How She Survived)-Nancy Barrows,

E

Disclaimer: This episode contains mature topics and graphic conversations about incest and sexual abuse. Audience discretion is advised. Named one of LinkedIn's 50 Most Impactful People of 2021, child sexual assault survivor-turned-thriver Nancy Barrows M.S. CCC-SLP is using her personal story to change the narrative on how we look, discuss and treat child sexual abuse, both here in the United States and around the world Episode Highlights: Nancy shares her story of being assaulted by her grandfather starting at four. And how her family was forced to confront the abuse after years of "being in the dark". Using her fierce resilience, combined with the love and understanding of her family, Nancy was able to confront her demons of an eating disorder and get off the hamster wheel of guilt and shame that survivors often find impossible to disengage from. Collier shares the similarities between Nancy's trauma and his own dealing with the murder of his mother by his father. Nancy and Collier share a "knowing" moment at which you can recognize trauma in others because you've been through so much. According to the CDC, child sexual abuse is a significant but preventable public health problem. Many children wait to report or never report child sexual abuse. Although estimates vary across studies, the latest data shows: About 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys experience child sexual abuse at some point in childhood. 91% of child sexual abuse is perpetrated by someone the child or child’s family knows. The total lifetime economic burden of child sexual abuse in the United States in 2015 was estimated to be at least $9.3 billion. However, this is likely an underestimate of the true impact of the problem since child sexual abuse is underreported. The prevalence of child sexual abuse is difficult to determine because it is often not reported; experts agree that the incidence is far greater than what is reported to authorities. If you or someone you know is suffering from or is a victim of sexual abuse, please use the following resources to seek assistance. Ep 24Message to Amir Locke's Mom: “You’re your son’s voice now”

E

“When you realize that your child is no longer coming home or going to give you a call, that part hits so horribly,” Melissa McKinnies said. She believes her son Danye Dion Jones was murdered after she found him hanging from a tree by a sheet in her backyard in 2018. An investigation into what happened occurred, not by police, but through a podcast called After The Uprising, which premiered its first season on iHeart Radio last summer, 2021. In this episode, she, Collier, and co-host of After The Uprising Ray Nowosielski discuss the outcome of the investigation, no-knock warrants, the devastating death of Amir Locke on February 2 in Minneapolis, and what moving past murder is like. Collier and Ray also discuss how the show’s recent NAACP award nomination may help elevate national awareness of the crime and open new doors to the investigation. Collier fights back tears while talking to Melissa about her grief over her son's death and the lack of investigators' accountability in finding who killed her son. Ep 22Robert Durst is permanently Jinxed! Will his death keep his victims from finding closure?.

E

Disgraced multimillionaire and real estate heir Robert Durst is dead. • How the murderer’s death may keep his victims from finding closure. As someone who confronted my father over the murder of my mother, I have my unique take on this conundrum. • I also discuss the similarities between Durst's bizarre behavior and my father's. In my opinion, they are both sociopaths. • Authorities believe Durst was behind three killings in three states over four decades, as highlighted in the 2015 HBO documentary series The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. • As a filmmaker, I also look at the impact HBO's series had on the conviction of Robert Durst in the trial over the murder of Susan Berman. S5 Ep 15Power VS Authority: Former Detroit PD Officer turned attorney and author David Robinson, Esq. on the Police & America.

E

Collier and Brenda welcome attorney and author David Robinson, Esq. to the program to share his thoughts on the current state of policing in the United States. With over 30 years of experience in law enforcement and on both sides of the infamous "Blue Line," David's unique perspective elevates the current debate of Power VS Authority and how much is too much. We explore how the curing of "the symptoms" does not cure "the disease", but rather further escalates the current crash course between the civilian population and those in uniform trying to keep the streets safe. Collier notes how the current situation seems to go far beyond race and/or gender but rather comes down to one simple scenario: those who seek to maintain power versus those who seek to attain it. Harris Blevins for the murder of her husband Todd Blevins in Lexington, Ohio, a suburb of Collier's hometown of Mansfield. Collier remembers how he was shut down many years ago by both his mother AND father's family, who labeled him "guilty by association," despite Collier's crusade in aiding the investigation of his mother's murder, leading to his father's conviction for her murder. Collier reveals how this stigma has haunted him his entire life and seeks to understand if other "children of murderers" face the same hurdles in life. Ep 4Local Ohio Tragedy: Melinda Davis' murder resonates with Collier's own mother's murder.

E

Collier Landry and Brenda Fisher discuss the tragic discovery of the body of Melinda Kay Davis, mother of four, on March 14, 2021, in Galloway, Ohio. Davis' ex-boyfriend, John Henry Mack, Jr., had been charged with kidnapping before the discovery. United States Marshals said Mack boasted at one point to investigators that Davis' "body would never be found," which helped connect him to his ex-girlfriend's disappearance. The case presented a familiar tone, as Ms. Davis had reportedly said to friends that if she disappeared, Mack might be responsible. Collier's mother told him that if she was to disappear, his father had something to do with it. 2 months later, her body was found, and Collier's father was arrested for her murder. ***Collier also discusses the distance the murder of his mother has put between himself and his family, especially his half-sister Krissy, who recently got remarried.
