This week's episode is very different from the content that I normally share in this podcast. The main difference is that this week's episode is very “faith focused.” I am in Anaheim, California for Podcast Movement 2017. My great friend, Phil Mershon had been wanting to have me as a guest on his podcast and I inviting him to come up to my room and we could knock out the interview while were both here at the event. Knowing that I needed to create an episode of my own this week, I asked Phil if he minded if I used the recording for my own show. Recently, my friend, Tammy Adams, provided a question for me to use as a topic for one of my YouTube VLOG episodes. However, when I started to think about how I would answer her question, I knew that the length of time that I wanted to spend answering this question, would make this better suited for a podcast episode. Tammy's question was… “What do you think is the #1 reason people struggle to get their small businesses jump started and earning a decent income?” I share what I feel may be the top five reasons in this episode. Here are a few reasons that I can think of. They feel uncomfortable charging people money for something that comes so naturally to them. They feel that their “gifts and talents” should be offered freely to others. They don’t feel confident in charging ENOUGH money for their products and services to allow them to operate a “profitable” and “responsible” business. They have not been able to find the INTERSECTION between the MARKET PLACE and their gifts, talents, passions, experience, and areas of expertise. They are too focused on where they are going to earn their next dollar and take little, to no, time evaluating where they want their business to be in the next five to ten years. I recently published a video where I gave a tour of my Next Level Studio. This prompted one individual to write a comment on the video (which this person has since deleted). That comment said…. Cliff, you have a LOT of stuff. Do you really need all of that? I mean as a self proclaimed Christian, (I’m anti religion btw) couldn’t you help more people by doing more with less and donating all the money you put into that stuff? … It’s none of my business how you spend your money but I feel like some of you guys that teach entrepreneurship to guys who have little income are kind of rubbing your success in our faces. I know that’s not your intention but do you ever think about what you’re actually putting out there? (No I'm not your audience, and no I don’t have a podcast, and no I haven’t worked as hard as you online, but yes I work hard every day and face my battles as they come) This episode is my response to the questions posed in this comment. In this episode, I share some thoughts about the mindset of what people are paying for when they hire you for an hour of one-on-one coaching and/or consulting. When people pay you (whatever amount), they are not paying for an hour of your time, they are paying for access to the years of experience, knowledge and wisdom that you bring to the table. I hope that this episode will inspire you to create a document where you can begin to take an inventory of all the value that you bring to the table. A few months ago, my great friend, Ray Edwards, shared a series of podcast episodes where he broke down the framework that he has developed for those who are looking to start an online business. I invited Ray to come and share the seven phases of his framework, with my community, in this week's episode. Ray Edwards' Framework For Starting An Online Business Phase 1 – Design Your Life: The idea is to ask yourself, what do you want your life to look like? What are you willing to do and what are you not willing to do? Phase2 – Person-Problem-Pain: In this phase, you clarify who it is that you are wanting to serve, you decide what problem you want to solve for them and you discover what pains these people are experiencing related to this problem. Phase 3 – Product: In this phase, you determine what products and services you plan to offer your customers. This could be one-on-one coaching/consulting, online/digital courses, physical products, etc. Also, in this phase, you should decide when you will make these products and/or services available. Phase 4 – Copy: Everyone should be clear on the value and benefits that they bring to the table. Not only that, you should have pre-determined language at your disposal to communicate what it is that you offer. In fact, Ray suggests that “everyone should have a sales letter.” Phase 5 – Marketing: Once you have your product(s) and you have you have your copy that clearly communicates the value you offer, it is time to begin marketing what you have to your target customers. This is where want to find out where these people hanging out? Better yet, where are they looking for solutions already? This is where can start building an audience with a blog, podcast and an email newsletter. This is where you begin setting up your landing pages and possibly even begin advertising. Phase 6 – Optimization: In this phase, you take what you are already doing and focus on making it better. You try to improve email opt-ins and open rates. You try to optimizing conversations from your ad campaigns. Etc. Phase 7 – Scale or Sale: When it comes to the SCALE of your business, is your business a mission or a means? When it comes to the SALE of your business, is your business even something that could be sold? Or are YOU the business? What is your number?
