As I was washing the dishes, I was thinking about what message that I might share as the closing keynote address for Free The Dream 2019. A few thoughts about discovering, embracing and living fully alive according to our TRUE IDENTITY came to my mind. After finishing the dishes, I came down to my studio to post production work on the recording of a Free The Dream Family Zoom call that I had hosted. I wanted to make the recording available as a REPLAY for those who were unable to join live. However, before starting that post production work, I felt compelled to go live on Facebook to talk about how important it is that we discover, embrace and live our lives fully according to our TRUE IDENTITY. What happened next was quite serendipitous. I'm not certain if this will end up being the topic that I share as my closing keynote for Free The Dream this year. However, after I finished recording this, I was CERTAIN that those who caught this live were meant to hear what I shared and I was equally certain that the audio recording was supposed to be this episode of The Cliff Ravenscraft Show. Crystal Foth has been a member of my community since 2013. Over the years, I have the honor of getting to know more and more about her and what her dreams are. One year ago, I was producing daily video content to help get the word out about the Free The Dream Conference. I noticed that Crystal had been leaving amazing feedback related to what I was sharing. However, I was surprised that she had not yet signed up for the conference. I reached out to Crystal to ask her why. Below are a few “excerpts” from her email response. Wow! I can't thank you enough for the personal message…. in fact I've been paralyzed when it comes to drafting this reply…. By replying, I have to confront the reasons myself why I'm not buying this ticket already! I've checked on flights/hotel, etc. Money is not the reason, time is a bit of a reason (but I'm willing to make it happen), the biggest reason is FEAR, but of what I'm not sure. Since 2013 … I've longed to create a business that would fully support my family and let me live my fullest life…. On my desk, I have a handwritten note stating my dream is to build “a creative business that nourishes my soul, inspires others and creates financial abundance.” What's my problem right? I attended (other event name removed) in 2014 to surround myself with others sharing the same goals and desires. Sitting in front of me that day were (name of couple removed) – and boy have they succeeded! I guess I'm afraid to make another investment and still not make it happen and see others just pass me right by. So what IS stopping me from making it happen? That I feel is buried deep and hasn't risen to the surface to be put into words yet. I can make excuses because that's what it really would be – I know if I want something bad enough, I CAN make it happen. I've dabbled since 2013 with niche sites, blogs, etc. but not really found my place in all of, not really made any money that would make a difference… You inspire me so much on a daily basis, I can't thank you enough for putting yourself out there and being 100% transparent and honest and sharing it with the world. I'm leaving tomorrow for Hawaii, I hope to rest, reflect and make a decision before I return! In response to Crystal's email, I was immediately inspired to create a new video for my community. (Click Here To See The Video) In that video, I expressed that Free The Dream was going to be the missing piece of the puzzle that would help her understand why it is that others have passed her by and why it is that she hasn't taken the actions to make her dream a reality. I boldly proclaimed that, if she came to Free The Dream, she would be unleashed from all that has been holding her back and that she would make more progress toward her dream in the following year than she ever thought possible. Immediately after watching this video, Crystal signed up for the Conference. When my friend, Brian Floyd, was asked… “What does an extraordinary life look like for you at the next level? (a.k.a., What is your dream?), he responded by sharing the future of his dreams. Brian stated that he would be considered a best selling author who is now producing movies and television shows based upon the stories that he has written. In further conversation, Brian exclaimed to me, with full confidence, “Cliff, I was born to be a story teller.” After attending Free The Dream 2018, Brian had a clear action plan for how to go about achieving his dream. When I checked up with Brian, a few months after the event, he had certainly made significant progress in the direction of his dream. However, he shared that he had come across a major road block, holding him back from a certain action that he desired to take on a consistent basis. When I asked him why he was failing to remain consistent in this behavior, he initially told me that he had no idea what it was, holding him back. I reminded Brian that “all beliefs have consequences.” I then shared a valuable insight about how to discover the beliefs that are holding him back from living the life that he was created to live. I asked him to apply that insight, on the spot, and Brian discovered a memory from when he was a teenager. He recalled when his loving, and well respected, uncle spoke a few words that have been etched deep in his heart. Those words created a belief that he was not even consciously aware of. The best part of this story is that my entire conversation with Brian was recorded and he has given me permission to share this recording with you in this episode of The Cliff Ravenscraft Show. I've had the honor of knowing Matt Dobschuetz for several years now. He took my Podcasting A to Z course back in March 2014 and launched a podcast called Porn Free Radio. I've always been impressed with Matt's journey from starting the podcast, creating a community around his podcast and then creating products and services for his niche audience that allowed him to create a full-time career around doing the work he feels called to do in the world. Matt came to the Free The Dream Conference last year. During the goal setting workshop, Matt went through the process of outlining a goal that he had been working on for several years. It's no secret that I'm pretty authentic and transparent about what I experience in my personal and professional life. It's just who I am. In this episode, I share a bit of feedback from someone who was confused about why I've made some of the decisions that I've made over the past year and a half. Listening to you over the past few weeks it feels to me that you've started drifting a bit, like there is a lack of clarity of where your focus needs to be. It's like you haven't found your feet yet in your new direction. I can see that you are extremely passionate about your new direction, particular the marriage course with your wife but I can also see that you are frustrated as it is not as financially rewarding as you would like it to be. This made me ask myself, what would happen if Cliff would coach Cliff? I did an entire episode of my Audio Journal Podcast in response to the question above. I loved your feedback and as I was listening to you I remembered what my original question was that made me decide to write to you. My friend, Chris, sent me an email that linked the the photo shared above. His email said… “Hi Cliff, I saw this post in my LinkedIn feed today. While I understand some of what he’s saying, i.e. entrepreneurship is hard, I just felt that parts of what he said don’t ring true. I’m curious to know what you think about what he says here. Agree, disagree or it depends? Have a good one, Chris” I clicked on the link in the email which took me to a post that Gary Vaynerchuck posted to his LinkedIn account. Here's what he wrote… “This is a picture of me. I'm catching up on some sleep on the floor of an airport between meetings. My videographer captured the picture. Now, don’t get me wrong … I’m not encouraging anyone to work to the point of burnout or exhaustion. I just want to share my truth and the lifestyle that I’m actually living. Here are a few points about entrepreneurship and starting your own business that I really want to make sure everyone understands: 1. It’s unbelievably lonely. 2. You have to deal with a lot of mental pressure and stress that comes with being the “last line of defense” at an organization. 3. You need to have the internal strength to deal with the judgement that the outside world deploys on you when (not if) you lose. 4. If you aspire to live a top 1% life aka finding your happiness (i.e. running a business that funds your life on your own terms), you're going to have to work hard and give up some leisure for that to happen … depending on your ambition. There are so many people who are going to get crushed over the next few years because they're starting companies, when they could've succeeded “within the system” at big companies. I implore you all to get real self-aware about who you are, and navigate your life around that. Have you ever heard of the article titled “1000 True Fans” by Kevin Kelly? This article came out at a powerful moment in my life, back in 2008, just after I transitioned into full-time self employment. I was looking to find a way to build a profitable business around the content, products and services that I created. Sure, I was blessed to have already grown a relatively nice sized audience from my first two years of podcasting as a hobby. However, I was not famous and I certainly didn't have millions of fans. I'll admit that I had a bit of anxiety about whether or not I'd be able to build my audience to a level that would allow me to be successful with my new business venture. However, when this article came it, it gave me a great sense of peace. Kevin Kelly wrote…. “To be a successful creator you don’t need millions. You don’t need millions of dollars or millions of customers, or millions of fans. To make a living as a craftsperson, photographer, musician, designer, author, animator, app maker, entrepreneur, or inventor you need only thousands of true fans.” You only need 1,000 true fans! Kevin described a true fan as someone that will buy anything you produce. He wrote… “These diehard fans will drive 200 miles to see you sing; they will buy the hardback and paperback and audible versions of your book; they will purchase your next figurine sight unseen; they will pay for the “best-of” DVD version of your free youtube channel; they will come to your chef’s table once a month.” In today's language, a true fan is someone who… will travel to your live event. will buy your book. will sign up for your course. will subscribe and follow you on every social media channel. and will share you work with everyone that they know! Simply put…. A true fan is someone who dedicated to you and your message. Can you really make a living with just 1,000 true fans? Yes! Note: We are talking about “making a living” not “making a fortune.” The following is the math that Kevin Kelly shared to explain what he meant… “Here’s how the math works. You need to meet two criteria. First, you have to create enough each year that you can earn, on average, $100 profit from each true fan. That is easier to do in some arts and businesses than others, but it is a good creative challenge in every area because it is always easier and better to give your existing customers more, than it is to find new fans. Second, you must have a direct relationship with your fans. That is, they must pay you directly. You get to keep all of their support, unlike the small percent of their fees you might get from a music label, publisher, studio, retailer, or other intermediate. If you keep the full $100 of profit from each true fan, then you need only 1,000 of them to earn $100,000 per year. That’s a living for most folks.” Heres' the thing…. You could have 500 true fans and create products and services that allowed you to earn merely $200 in profit, per year, from each true fan and you'd still earn $100,000 per year. The whole point is not that you need exactly 1,000 true fans. It's not even about the exact amount of $100,000 per year. The point is that YOU CAN MAKING A LIVING DOING WHAT YOU LOVE and you don't have to be famous to do so! Just imagine all the people who are working a day job, doing work that they hate, just to earn $30,000 per year. Any one of these individuals could start some sort of “side job” where they simply grow a community of only 300 true fans who will buy products that will net them $100 per year, in profit, from each true fan to replace that soul sucking day job. If you haven't done so, I encourage you to read the whole article by Kevin Kelly. After doing so, you'll understand why I always tell people to… STOP FOCUSING on THE NUMBERS and GROWING YOUR AUDIENCE and STAY FOCUSED on BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS with those who are already in your audience. Here's the truth though… Kevin said it like this… “The truth is that cultivating a thousand true fans is time consuming, sometimes nerve racking, and not for everyone. Done well (and why not do it well?) it can become another full-time job. At best it will be a consuming and challenging part-time task that requires ongoing skills. There are many creators who don’t want to deal with fans, and honestly should not.” While this approach is not for everyone. I have found that those who are willing to go this rout are able to find success in serving a specialized niche audience that can't be served by companies that are ill equipped to serve the focused interests of such small number of people. There is so much opportunity out there for you if you are willing to invest in relationships with people who connect with you and your message. One thing I've learned over the past decade is that there seems to be endless opportunties when it comes to generating an income with your internet connection. In this episode, I feature a weird mix between a conversation and an interview with my great friend, Jake Lang. I'm still trying to navigate the concept of having guests on this podcast. Jake has had a unique journey in creating an online business. Apply for the Next Level Mastermind at NextLevelMastermind.info. “Your life will be the direct reflection of the expectations of your peer group.” – Tony Robbins I fell in love with that quote the instant I heard it at one of Tony's Unleash The Power Within events. Jim Rohn said it this way… “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” If there is an area of your life that is not going as well as you would like, you may need to investigate who has the most influence, in your life, in this area. It may be time to “upgrade your peer group.” My first full year of full-time self-employment was riddled with self-doubt, overwhelm from all that I was being told I needed to do, and lack of clarity of what I needed to focus on next. As a result, that first year was the most difficult year, financially, that I have ever experienced in my lifetime. I can tell tell you that those difficult times were definitely worth it. However, with that said, looking back from the perspective of knowing what I know today, I now realize that things didn't have to be quite so hard. For me, everything changed in October 2010, when I discovered “the mastermind principle” and launched my very first “mastermind group.” I define a mastermind as “a small group of people who meet on a consistent basis, where every member of the group is 100% committed to the success of every other member in the group.” The concept of the mastermind was formally introduced by Napoleon Hill in his book, “Think and Grow Rich.” Hill stated, that through your participation in a healthy mastermind group, “you may borrow and use the education, the experience, the influence and perhaps the capital of other people in carrying out your own plans in life.” The Green Room MastermindIn October 2010, I was working with Pat Flynn, helping him launch his “Smart Passive Income” podcast. Through our conversations, I learned that he had recently discovered the mastermind principle as well. I knew that Pat was someone that I would trust to enter into a mastermind relationship with, so I asked him if he would join me in the start of our own mastermind group. He said yes and our personal and professional lives have grown in ways that neither of us would have imagined at the time. Our mastermind group has met for one hour, every week since. Today, our group is known as the “Green Room Mastermind Group” which is made up of myself, Pat Flynn (Smart Passive Income), Michael Stelzner (Social Media Examiner), Ray Edwards (Ray Edwards International), Mark Mason (Late Night Internet Marketing) and Leslie Samuel (Become A Blogger).   The Green Room Mastermind is not open to new members. However, for more than eight years, I've facilitated a number of paid mastermind groups where it gives me great joy to see others experience the following benefits of being in a healthy mastermind group. You benefit greatly from the the education, the experience, the influence and even the resources of the other people in your mastermind group. You can accomplish more, in one year, than you could accomplish, without your mastermind group, in a lifetime, if you relied entirely on your own efforts for success. When you form a true mastermind alliance with others, and work with them in a spirit of perfect harmony, you can draw freely upon the spiritual forces within you in carrying out your plans and desires. The mastermind principle can give you protection against failure, provided always that your purpose, in using this principle, is beneficial to all whom you influence. You will experience dramatic improvements in both your personal and professional life. You will have more focus and greater confidence in yourself and your abilities. You will have more clarity about what you need to focus on next. The Next Level Mastermind In November 2017, I launched the Next Level Mastermind. This is a paid mastermind group for those who are on the journey of full-time self-employment. I recently recorded a brand new promotional video for the Next Level Mastermind. Each month, I will take on one or two new “one-on-one mentoring” clients. I had the great honor of working with Clint Schumacher in a mentoring capacity from December 2017 through the first few months of 2018. Recently, Clint wrote the following to me in an email… “So excited to hear that the Free the Dream conference was a huge success! Excited for you and your impact! At some point, I need to send you an update on exciting life events that I’ve walked into since our mentoring sessions.
