Ep 60Circular business models: Making the economics work
The textiles industry remains anchored in the linear take-make-waste economy. According to the European Environment Agency, the sector has the fourth most significant impact on primary resource materials and water after food, housing and transport. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has recently set out five universal circular economy policy goals around which governments and businesses can align to scale the circular economy. One goal is to ‘make the economics work’ by creating economic incentives and setting regulatory requirements that enable circular economy business models (such as resale, rental and repair) to become the norm rather than the exception. How can this be achieved in the fashion and textiles sector? In this episode, we'll hear from the European Commission, the European Environment Agency, and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, who will share their perspectives on the enabling role of policy to increase the adoption of circular business models.--Watch the full episode of the Circular Economy ShowFind out more about the Universal Policy Goals Discover more episodes of The Circular Economy ShowLearn more about our work

Ep 59Measuring your business transformation towards a circular economy
Measuring progress against targets is vital for any business. You track your company’s sales figures, cost base, and carbon emissions — but what about your circular economy performance? As the circular economy gains momentum globally, with more businesses developing circular strategies that create growth and also benefit society and the environment, circular economy performance is becoming increasingly important. In this episode we hear from Cecilia Brännsten, the Environmental Sustainability Manager for the H&M Group, Marianne Richeux, Brambles' Zero Waste World Programme Director for Europe, and Ellen Jackowski, Chief Sustainability Officer at HP Inc. --This podcast is based on a recent episode of the Circular Economy Show, watch the full episode following this link.Click here to learn more about Circulytics.Find more episodes of The Circular Economy Show here. Ep 58Upstream what? Solutions to plastic pollution
If you came home to find that your apartment was flooding, would you immediately start mopping up the water?Probably not! That would be a futile effort without first finding out what is causing the flooding and stopping it. This is the essence of tackling the root cause of a problem — moving upstream. In a circular economy, upstream innovation is about tracing a problem back to its root cause and tackling it there. Why deal with a pile of waste when we can prevent it from being created in the first place? Good for the environment, good for the economy: shifting just 20% of plastic packaging from single-use to reuse is an upstream innovation opportunity worth ~USD 10 billion. In this episode, we'll explore worldwide cutting-edge upstream innovation examples to tackle plastic pollution. We will hear from Jessica Vieira from Apeel, who disrupts food systems by extending the life of fruit and vegetables without any single-use plastic. Also joining us is Dieuwertje Nelissen from Enviu, who will share their reuse projects and how they are tackling plastic pollution from Indonesia to The Netherlands.--This podcast is based on a recent episode of the Circular Economy Show, watch the full episode following this link.Explore our Upstream Innovation Guide.Find more episodes of The Circular Economy Show here. Ep 57Food and farming: regenerative solutions to tackle climate change
From farm to plate, our food plays an important role in how we tackle climate change. Since the beginning of the agricultural revolution, we have used extractive, traditional farming practices in order to produce enough food to meet the needs of an ever-increasing global population.People are eating more food with less nutritional value. Is it possible to grow our food in ways that provide more valuable nutrients through regenerative and restorative practices?Join us in this episode as we explore examples of regeneratively sourced food, that sequester carbon and restore soil health. We will be joined by Sheena Shah, the Permaculture Design Consultant and Director at Harvesting for Good East Africa, to discuss regenerative agricultural practices and examples from East Africa. We will hear from Nicole Gobeth to understand the role of policy and how her initiative, Connect the Dots, is creating a circular economy for food in São Paulo. We will also welcome Jeanette Coombs-Lanot from Danone to discuss the role played by large consumer-facing businesses and learn how they are ensuring that the food they produce for our plates is managed regeneratively.--This podcast is based on a recent episode of the Circular Economy Show, watch the full episode at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNcJfu0xwJAFind out more about food and the circular economy: https://www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org/our-work/activities/foodFind more episodes of The Circular Economy Show: https://www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org/our-work/activities/the-circular-economy-showMore about our work here: https://www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org

Ep 56Circular-ish: the messy reality of circular design
As the circular economy continues to gain momentum, designers, creatives, and innovators have seized the opportunity to rethink the way in which products are made and used. But there is still much to do — we need pioneers to demonstrate what is possible, and most of the innovation we need to scale the circular economy transition has not yet been established. In this episode, we will discuss the opportunities and challenges in circular design and ask the question: what does the journey towards circular design look like?In this episode, we hear from Joe Iles, Circular Design Programme Lead at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, plus Lay Koon Tan, co-founder of Nature Squared, and Katie Treggiden, author of Wasted: When Trash Becomes Treasure. Ep 49Transforming the fashion industry - The Fashion Show (ep 1/5)
The way that clothes are made today is extremely wasteful and polluting. For the fashion industry to thrive in the future, we must transform its current take-make-waste model into one where clothes are kept at their highest value and designed to never end up as waste. In a circular economy for fashion, products (apparel, footwear, and accessories) are used more, made to be made again, and made from safe and recycled or renewable inputs. In the first episode of this five-part series, the Foundation's Make Fashion Circular (MFC) team explain how a circular economy for fashion works.-The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is a UK charity working on business, learning, insights & analysis, and communications to accelerate the transition towards the circular economy. Ep 47Urban intersections: visualising hidden resource flows
Resource flow analysis in cities relies mostly on quantitative methods which often overlook informal sector activities. However, informal actors provide vital services in African cities, and must be part of our future imaginaries of cities. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing challenges for this sector such as access to food and limitations to transport and infrastructure. To achieve urban resilience, food-, water- and energy-security, and successful decision making, we need to include analysis methods that bring to light hidden resource flows in our cities. In the final episode of the current series we are joined by experts from ICLEI Africa, Solophina Nekesa, Professional Officer with the Urban Systems team and Paul Currie, Manager of the Urban Systems Unit. We’ll explore how photography and storytelling can complement quantitative understanding of livelihoods, resources, and infrastructures in cities from across Africa. Ep 46Stephanie Kelton on Redefining the Story of Our Economy
Do we really understand the economy? Do we truly know how money works? Join us in this episode as Stephanie Kelton discusses the role of Modern Monetary Theory in shifting common misconceptions around government deficits. We tend to associate deficits with negative connotations such as rising taxes and destabilisers of the economy. However, is this the result of the deficit itself or rather the decision making of governments? Is it possible to shift our use of government deficits towards boosting job creation, driving innovation, and propelling us towards an economy of regeneration and restoration; a circular economy? The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is a UK charity working on business, learning, insights & analysis, and communications to accelerate the transition towards the circular economy.
