The Future Is Yours. What's Holding You Back?

Today you're joining me in Jamaica where I gave a keynote to rising stars; part of Richard Branson's Center for Entrepreneurship. What I love about this talk, and really engaging with the community at large is -- whether you are an entrepreneur, artist, or really pursuing anything, we all face the same challenges - fear, doubt, and finding our way. I share some of those things from my journey, but even more interesting and fun is getting to hear from 3 different entrepreneurs on stage with the goal of unlocking some of their biggest challenges. And I know without a doubt, the challenges they have are similar to ones you face or will face. Please enjoy our business therapy session. You'll also be inspired to know that: * Failure is one of the best learning opportunities. Rather than letting failure scare you away from trying again, let it teach you what to do next time. * You've got to periodically look at your business model to see where your money is coming from vs where you're spending your time. If you're not making the most money from where you're spending the most time, you need to fix it fast. * Stories are an integral part of succeeding at business. Telling your own story well can move your business across the globe. On the other end of the spectrum, you've got to get really honest regarding the stories you're telling yourself about what's holding you back. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Grit, Guts, Gumption and the Art of More

Today I'm reaching into my quiver of keynotes to share a talk I gave at CreativeMornings here in Seattle. If you're not aware of CreativeMornings it's a breakfast lecture series for the creative community started by my good friend Tina Roth Eisenberg. These talks are hosted in hundreds of cities around the globe and a great way to connect with your local community. There are thousands of talks on their website, creativemornings.com. The theme of this talk was bravery, so I talk about my own experience and my take on how Ansel Adams and Macklemore have used bravery and vulnerability to propel their careers by making things that only they could make. I showed some videos during the talk, and if you want to see them you can find the whole talk on my YouTube channel or on the CreativeMornings site. In this episode, * We really explore this idea of "the art of more". The act of creating, and putting more work out there, despite our fear and it's imperfections. * At the core of this talk is bravery. I dig into why personal work, for me, has been a great vehicle to getting out there and when I look back on my career, it's been the greatest lever that has lead to my biggest accomplishments. * Finally, we end with audience questions which is always my favorite part of any talk. We get into how to break into a creative community, how to deal with "no", and some of my biggest failures. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Celebrating Your Weirdness with Thomas Middleditch

E

Thomas Middleditch is an actor and comedian best known for his starring role on HBO's Silicon Valley where he plays Richard, the struggling startup founder. He started his career doing improv theater for the likes of Second City and UCB, and certainly showed off his improv skills during our conversation. Silicon Valley is the only TV show that I watch religiously, due largely in part to its authentic portrayal of the startup world that I have one foot in the door of. Thomas lives the same authenticity, and isn't one to shy away from removing the glamour from working in Hollywood. Whether you're founding a startup, working your way up the rungs as a comedian, or trying to double your client base, you better remember to enjoy what you're doing to get through the tough days. In this episode, * You can't be passive! If you want things to be happening around you, you have to make them happen. * If you want to be a good artist, you have to experience life. * Pursuing your happiness is worth the arduousness, the struggle, the inconveniences, and the trolls. Treat all adversity and every challenge like it's a buzzer beater shot. Welcome it. Embrace it. Step up. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Persevering through Failure with Melissa Arnot Reid

Melissa Arnot Reid is a mountain guide, speaker, and founder of the nonprofit organization, The Juniper Fund. She was the first American woman to summit and descent Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen and also holds the record for summiting the tallest peak in the world more times than any other western woman with a total of 6 ascents. She's a certifiable bone crushing badass with a lot of life experience to share from her years of sacrificing for her passions. In this episode, you'll learn that it wasn't the final, most strenuous 250 feet of summiting Everest that got Melissa to be the first female to summit and descent the highest peak in the world without supplemental oxygen. It was every single step since the first mountain she had ever stepped on that got her there. The key to summiting Everest is taking small steps towards your bigger goals. If you liked that metaphor, brace yourself for another 942 of them that will help you be bold, find what calls you, and dig deep to make it all happen. In this episode, * You don't have to see the summit to make the first step. You don't even have to know what the summit looks like. * If you're asking yourself if what you're doing is your passion, then it isn't. * Let yourself grow and change as a person as you have new experiences and learn more about yourself. Failure is a good thing and it makes life exciting! Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Go Against the Grain with David Heinemeier Hansson

E

David Heinemeier Hansson is a programmer, writer, and entrepreneur. He changed the future of technology with Ruby on Rails, has influenced the way businesses are being built and run with his books; Getting Real, Rework, and Remote; Office Not Required, and has helped many businesses (including my own photo studio) stay organized and productive with the integrated project management solution, Basecamp. David is passionate about finding alternative ways to do things. He loves looking at the status quo, ripping it apart and putting back together only the elements that make the most sense. In our conversation, David helps budding entrepreneurs cross the bridge from wantrepreneur to taking first steps as well as offers some animated anecdotes and mind shifts for how to make your existing businesses and teams ultra productive, passionate, and value driven. In today's episode, * If you want to build a successful business, try integrating existing ideas and tools rather than creating a new standalone tool. * You don't have to be a genius, nor do you have to outwork everyone to be an entrepreneur. You can build a profitable business starting with 10 hours a week and existing business models. * Take control of the things that you decide are important and make sense to you. Stamina, Tenacity and Craft with Eugene Mirman

Eugene Mirman is a stand up comedian, actor, and writer. You've heard his voice as "Gene" from Bob's Burgers, seen his face on Comedy Central, Netflix, and Flight of the Conchords and recently found his podcast on Audible, Hold On. From the outside, Eugene has lived what we may think of as the typical struggling comedian's career. It took him six years of failing before got a bit of traction. Most people quit well before the 6 year mark. How did he persevere through those years of struggle? He never considered not being a comedian. He didn't give himself a backup plan. He made the conscious decision to keep trying new things until things started to stick. Eugene is a living lesson of perseverance and tenacity, and his mindset is one that will help you thrive long term, regardless of what you're creating. Listen to this episode if you want to laugh while getting a schooling on how to make sacrifices that pay off. In this episode: * If you have a skill, service, or product that serves someone's need, your audience is out there looking for you as hard as you are looking for them. * No one is stopping you from making the thing that you want to make. Go make it and then find 5 ways to get that thing out there. Then do it again. * Focus on your one big goal and work on it every day. It's a long slow grind, but if you stick with it for 10 to 15 years, Eugene is betting that you'll be a success. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Ramit Sethi: Make More Money

E

No one has single-handedly given me better insight about the business side of art than the New York Times bestselling author, Ramit Sethi. He's a business savant, mindset master, habit king, and money maker. Ramit is a regular on the show by now, and this episode is the first one we did together. It was such a hit and I still get so much positive feedback on how powerful his advice is that we had to share it with you on the podcast. Our conversation is packed full of both mindset shifts as well as tried and true tactical advice so you can earn more money. And we're not talking nickels more. We're talking 10x more. Give it a listen and give the techniques a try. In this episode: * If you can learn to understand your client, find solutions they need, and communicate in their language, price becomes a triviality. Show your future clients you've done the work by using "the briefcase technique." * We talk about negotiating. If you're a freelancer, are you getting paid by the hour? We need to change that to value-based pay… * Ramit shares how to, step by step, land your next pitch, freelance gig, double your rates, make more money. The Secret to Success No One Talks About

You're stuck. You've plateaued. You're making great work but nobody is seeing it and you're asking yourself "how do I get noticed?" How did the blowout successes of YouTube and Instagram get to their million+ followers? The answer: they created community. Whether you're an individual, a hustler, an artist, a creator, an entrepreneur, or you represent a company, the fundamental principle is that making something great and promoting it is only 50% of the work, and that the other 50% (the community) is the part that makes the difference to ongoing and repeated success. In today's episode: What building a community means. Why building a community is the path to your success. How to build your community. (step by step instructions) Enjoy! Tame Your Distracted Mind with Neuroscientist Adam Gazzaley

Adam Gazzaley is a neuroscientist, speaker, entrepreneur, photographer, author… He's a hyphen through and through. But what he's obsessed with these days is using technology to retrain and improve the use of our human brains, using it even to treat ADHD and other mental conditions. Now more than ever before the world is moving at a pace faster than our 2 million year old brains can catch up. Adam says that as a species our brains aren't evolving quickly enough so we're experiencing a cognition crisis and the fallout of this crisis are attention deficit disorders. Through the application of treatments involving video games and mindfulness practices, we can not only be more productive in our life, but also feel more fulfilled in our lives. We talk about how to build our minds to increase our attention, expand our perception, improve our decision making, and better regulate our emotions. In today's episode: The brain is a muscle - it's trainable. We may soon be entering a time where doctors prescribe digital medicine - video games as medication for ADHD. Even if you don't have ADHD or another attention deficit disorder, you can still benefit from training your brain. You can use monotasking and mindfulness to fight anxiety and be more productive. The world needs wisdom. Part of the wisdom is the development of our intuition and internal awareness. It's the foundation of how we approach all things and each other. Enjoy! Austin Kleon: Why Great Artists Steal

Austin Kleon is a writer who draws. He's the best selling author of three illustrated books; Newspaper Blackout, Steal Like An Artist, and Show Your Work. Using his own words and borrowed (stolen) words alike, Austin articulates better than anyone how to find your own style and vision and then what to do with your work. He's been featured on NPR, Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and this is quickly becoming a regular here on cjLIVE. This interview is from a few years ago, but I've been itching to share it again because it still packs such a heavy punch. Austin, the quote factory, Kleon seems to have a quote that perfectly encapsulates every topic we touch on. We go from tip to toe on the creative process; how to draw inspiration for your work, how to hone your style while growing an audience, and how to ship your work. In today's episode: Boring life = best art. Schedules, habits, daily routines make you more productive and more creative. If you aren't sharing your work, you're missing out on half of the artistic experience. The person who experiences your art is just as important as you are in the process. Sharing your work is also a tool to attract more people who are interested in what you're interested in. Side projects and hobbies are critical components in defining what your next best work will be. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Daymond John: Why Grit, Persistence, and Hard Work Matter

Daymond John is the CEO and founder of the iconic lifestyle brand, FUBU, which he started by selling handmade hats on the street and went on to have more than $6 billion in sales. You've seen him as the "snake in the grass" star on ABC's Shark Tank, which is currently in its tenth season of filming. He released his first NY Times best selling book, Power of Broke, in 2016, and is just about to drop his second, Rise and Grind. This is Daymond's second time bringing his buttery soft hands and understated wisdom on the show and somehow we had even more fun than last time. Between jokes and anecdotes, Daymond drops some serious wisdom on how to keep your goals, habits, and pursuit of your dream life simple and effective. In today's episode: While writing Rise and Grind, Daymond found some killer recurring themes for living your most productive and best life. Most of them you've heard on the show before- meditation, importance of sleep, exercise- but he drops some new shared habits and techniques on prioritization and goal setting. Entrepreneurship is simple. It's just figuring out each roadblock, each problem, one at a time and not getting comfortable with it. If you can't answer why you want the success that you claim to, you probably won't have the fortitude to keep going when the going gets tough. There's power in defining exactly why you want the things you do, and revisiting your goals regularly to make sure you still want them. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. 7 Habits to Unlocking Your Big Dreams

December is generally a slow time- a lot of businesses shut down or slow down, people tend to spend time with family and loved ones, and it's traditionally a time that offers us time and space. I love using this time of year and the traits that it bears to its full advantage to slow down, strategize, and synthesize my intentions. Whether it's end of the year, beginning of a year, or the cusp of any time in your life, we unwrap the mindset of dreaming big, setting goals, and taking action. In today's episode, Declaring your intention for yourself and where you want to go should be one of your first steps in setting your goals. Verbalizing your intentions is a signal to the universe that you're ready to take the necessary action. How to use a playbook to creatively attack your goals and turn your intentions into actions. I have 7 habits that I use to feed my creativity. Use my playbook or start your own. Making your goals specific and quantifiable and then tracking them is incredibly important if you want to succeed in achieving them. There's power in specificity; "I want to get my business off the ground" vs "I want to have 4 new clients by March 1st, 2018".

On Stage with Gary Vaynerchuk at PhotoPlus

E

Gary Vaynerchuk and I gave a co-keynote in NYC at Photo Plus Expo. My background is as a creator turned entrepreneur, and Gary's a born entrepreneur and then realized that creativity was how he was going to take his business to the next level. Unsurprisingly, we both ended up in roughly the same space. Instead of delivering a keynote that showed my own pictures or videos or stories like I've done at PhotoPlus in the past, we decided to co-host a Q&A and answer 3 audience members' biggest current struggles. I've been getting a ton of great feedback on the Q&A style keynotes I've been doing, so I'm pumped to share another one with you. In today's episode, Jason has a growing portrait business in Chicago, but seems to have plateaued on the money that he's able to make using his current strategies. We let him leave the stage only after offering a new blueprint for how to set his prices to make the kind of money he dreams of. Niki has been hustling like crazy shooting volume to grow her brand, but now she's getting antsy not making money even though she's so busy. She seemed to know all the answers before asking, but needed to hear from us. Patience and the power of intention will take you as far as you want to go if you're willing to stay in the game long enough. Richard has been grinding at his podcast for 11 years, trying to make enough money to support his craft. We find that with all the experience that he has, he's certainly got options, but hasn't gotten creative enough about his strategy. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Ryan sees more product launches than perhaps anyone else in the world and knows how to do it well and how to do it poorly. He shares his insights for his path of launching (and continuing to launch) Product Hunt and what he notices in the 100's of launches that make it to his virtual doorstep, daily. Richard Branson: Lessons in Business and Life

If there's anyone qualified to lay out the blueprint for dreaming big, living life on your own terms and turning your passions into your career, it's the iconic Sir Richard Branson. He's fearlessly and boldly disrupted one industry after another as the founder of the Virgin Group, from publishing to airlines to creating Virgin Galactic (the world's first commercial spaceliner), building an empire of more than 100 companies and 60,000 employees in over 50 countries. Drawing threads from his new book, Finding My Virginity, we talk about some of his recent projects as well as the steps he took to get from one stepping stone to the next. Sit down with Sir Richard and I as he uses stories to break down prioritizing your life, setting goals, and how to choose what to pursue. In today's episode, It's time to spin the nasty term "dyslexia" into a positive; let's start calling it "alternative thinker." Richard actually credits his alternative thinking to shape him into a master delegator, a skill that he credits much of his success to. The recipe for a successful business boils down to this: spend lots of time on the things you care about, pay attention to what annoys you about how others are doing things, find a way to do it better. Glennon Doyle is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir Love Warrior, and Carry On, Warrior. Glennon is also the founder of Momastery an online community reaching millions each week, and Together Rising—a non-profit organization that has raised seven million dollars for families around the world through its Love Flash Mobs, which have revolutionized online giving. Prepare your ears for a healthy dose of honesty, as that's what Glennon does best. She says things that others aren't comfortable saying and does what she believes is true and beautiful, even under threat of career suicide. We talk about how perseverance, integrity and trust in her community made her a ten year overnight success and I know there's some nuggets in here that'll help you as you mine for the gold of life. In today's episode: Glennon started writing every day. First to her friends, then on her blog. She talks about getting up at 4 am to write in her closet and hitting publish every day by 6. So many takeaways and about sharing before you have time to judge your work (and thusly not release it) and making creativity a habit. Glennon has this saying I love, "And both". This idea that life is not black and white. She says … Life is brutal. But it's also beautiful. It's Brutiful. Life's brutal and beautiful are woven together so tightly that they can't be separated. If you reject the brutal, you're rejecting the beauty, too. We talk about technology and social media and our constant need to check our phones. Get Un-stuck And Make Real Money

In speaking with people all over the world, I've found hearing other people's struggles is a fascinating way to helping ourselves breakthrough. In this episode, we discuss: Defining your dream. Many creatives haven't defined what they actually want. If you don't know what you want it will be hard for you to get it. Understanding your why. When the going gets tough, and it will, your WHY is what will separate you from those who don't want it as bad as you. I share some tactical steps to building a client base and portfolio that supports the work you want to be hired for. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Ryan Holiday: How to Create Work That Lasts

E

Ryan Holiday is an author and media strategist. His career in marketing started at age 19, where he dropped out of college to work with Robert Green. He soon found his way as the director of marketing for American Apparel, then went on to start his own creative agency, Brass Check, who advises the likes of Google, Tim Ferriss, and Tony Robbins. He's quite the writer, making the New York Times bestseller list with multiple of the 6 books he's released in the last 5 years. Ryan is a master marketer and what you'll find at the core of his marketing principles are his personal principles. He applies a Stoic philosophy to everything he does and this episode is overflowing with philosophies, self directed questions, and stories that has helped him make work that stands the test of time, and will help you do the same. In today's episode we discuss: Good marketing isn't taking pictures or writing copy that sell shoes anymore. It's just as much about making work that starts a discussion. You're going to get a little crash course on Stoic philosophy and how to use your own mindset to propel your creative endeavors in three simple but challenging steps. Control your perception, take action, and look forward to the transformation that hardship brings. The two questions you should be asking yourself before starting any creative project are "who is this for?" and "what does this do for them?" If you think long term about the impact that you want to make, it will help you persevere when the going gets tough. Enjoy! Mel Robbins: 5 Seconds To Change Your Life

E

Mel Robbins is the most booked female speaker in the world, an American on-air CNN commentator and television host, contributing editor for Success magazine and author of The 5-Second Rule. Her TED Talk around the 5-second Rule is a simple framework to turn inaction into action and has garnered over 10 million views. What I love about Mel is her hard-hitting, no bullshit real talk. You won't get any sugar coating here. She calls herself the fucked up friend that figured things out and has become wise. Now, she doesn't want us to make the same mistakes she did. She's done the hard work and the research, science of habit, science of confidence, the way self-doubt works. She's on a mission to share everything she's learned. In this episode: We talk a lot about anxiety. Mel says she was born a worrier, and around age 21, the panic attacks started becoming paralyzing. Not everyone has dealt with depression and anxiety, but we've all had gone through hard times. And the open & thoughtful tools Mel shares are useful for everyone. Mel says "you don't have to think the way you have to think." The basis of her book is the 5-second rule, which is taking the world by storm. There is a connection between our wellbeing and our thoughts. Mel and I go deep into her technique the 5-second rule to change habits. We also get a sneak peek of a technique Mel is currently researching that works every time to help you find your passion, make choices, and audit your life. I cannot wait for you to hear it. Enjoy! He's a marketing guru, who has helped the likes of Tim Ferriss, Ramit Sethi, and Gary V reach the #1 spot on major bestseller lists. He also brings the distilled wisdom of your favorite authors to you on his podcast, Author Hour Podcast. This interview has been a long time coming. If you've been following me for awhile, you've probably heard me mention Charlie's book, Play It Away. It has certainly changed my life and it's why PLAY is one of the 10 habits I do every day for a happy and more creative life. Brené Brown: The Quest For True Belonging

Brené now holds the record for the most cjLIVE appearances, this being her third time on the show. She is a vulnerability and empathy expert and has one of the most watched TED Talks of all time on the subject and is the author of four New York Times best selling books, one of which, Daring Greatly, is my playbook for staying creative and true to myself. Her new book, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone, has come out at a time where we need it most with our world being as divisive and disconnected as it is, it's giving us the tools and ideas to use our unique skills to help connect with each other. Like in our past episodes, we quickly go deep in this conversation. Brené drops bombs about the importance of connection and how to use your art and creativity to get there. We talk about power of paradox and you need to look no further than the paradox of her no bullshit Texan way of communicating her vulnerabilities as a paradox in itself. It was so refreshing to break down boundaries with Brené again after a year- hope you enjoy the interview as much as I do. In today's episode: We talk about how divisive times are good breeding grounds for good art and how that art may be just what we need to form stronger connections between us. Art can save us. Brené has such a unique way of talking about valuing your work. Have a strong back and a soft front. We talk about how to set boundaries around your worth and communicate that value without being a jerk. Everything in this episode comes down to taking the reigns on your brain. You will learn about and tactics on how to use your intellect to your advantage, especially when your lizard brains wants to take over. Enjoy! Real Artists Don't Starve /w Jeff Goins

Jeff, like many of us, has had a winding path to his art. He's a best-selling author of FIVE books including The Art of Work and his latest, Real Artists Don't Starve. As a youth, he never claimed being a writer, but it was always something that lingered in the back of his mind. From joining a band to lingering at a comfortable job, he was just waiting for his mid-life crisis to push him into gear and start taking action. Our conversation is chock full of actionable, tangible, you-can-and-should-do-them nuggets about how to go from starving to thriving as an artist. Perhaps the biggest nugget revolves around something I've been suggesting to you for years- don't quit your day job while pursuing your side hustle. Keep your side hustle where it belongs, on the side, until it has enough traction to support you. Today on the podcast, We go back into Jeff's journey and unpack the curiosity, intuition, soul-searching, and grit to travel a winding road to his calling. There is no school or method to finding out who we are. Jeff drops some valuable tactical gems we can all use to find out way. Jeff's curiosity lead him to discover more stories of artists and entrepreneurs. What he heard was "I can't do that, because there's no money in that". We talk a lot about the idea of a starving artist explore what has enabled artists who are killing it to overcome that mindset. There's no such thing as a solitary genius. We talk about how to use community and network to build collaborative partnerships that elevates your work. Enjoy! Show notes and links for this episode can be found at www.chasejarvis.com/podcast. Habits For Ultra-Productivity w/ Jessica Hische

Jessica is a lettering artist, entrepreneur, designer, speaker and author who's worked with clients like Penguin Books and Wes Anderson and recently published a book called "In Progress" which is an incredibly detailed look at her process from sketch to final deliverables - definitely a must-read for any of you lettering fanatics out there. She's also got this amazing library of side projects like Daily Drop Cap (exactly what it sounds like), a site called Don't Fear The Internet which teaches HTML and CSS to designers, ShouldIWorkForFree.com - a flow chart which answers that exact question - and literally 10 more. Insanely prolific. Are You Leaving Money On The Table?

E

Today's podcast is inspired by a question I received on Twitter about setting rates. The question was: "How do you figure out what a person CAN charge for commercial photography in their industry?" In this episode, I talk about: So many of us are terrible about asking for money for our work. Luckily, positioning, negotiating, and pricing are all skills. I provide some resources as well as some hard earned truths about pricing your work. How the alchemy to pricing your work is a balance of what people expect and what someone is willing to pay for your work. The value of your work must also consider the impact it will have on the ability to change a brand, sell product, or solve a problem Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Using Constraints to Fuel Your Best Work Ever /w Scott Belsky

Scott Belsky is one of those guests where I couldn't possibly do justice to their resume - but here's the short version: He's currently the Executive Chairmen of the professional referral platform Prefer, was the founder of Behance, the creative portfolio platform that I'm sure many of you use, VP at Adobe, and author of the bestselling book "Making Ideas Happen." I'm leaving out a ton - such as his time at Goldman Sachs, Benchmark, and as an early investor in Pinterest, Uber, and Periscope among others - but you get the idea - incredibly accomplished entrepreneur and passionate advocate for creativity. Today on the podcast, * He has an amazing term called "the messy middle," which essentially refers to all the stuff between the start of a company and the flashy exit or spectacular failure * He is also militant about the critical importance of, well, doing shit - of focusing on execution over plans or ideas * We also riff on the value of focus and prioritizing, another common weak point for creators and entrepreneurs Enjoy! Airbnb's Joe Gebbia: The Intersection of Art & Business

Joe is best known as the co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Airbnb, a company you've probably heard about once or twice - valued at $31 billion at the moment (yep - that's billion with a B). But this isn't his first rodeo – he's been a passionate advocate of design and an entrepreneur since his childhood, channeling that passion into everything from his college side hustle of selling his specially seat cushions for the uncomfortable stools in his art classes to various earlier online businesses, designing a furniture line called Neighborhood, and his current project, Samara, Airbnb's internal design studio. Today on the podcast, * The role of sports in Joe's life and how in many ways they paved the way for his path as an artist and entrepreneur - I absolutely love this part of the conversation because it so closely mirrors my own path, growing up as an artist living in the body of a jock * So many of Joe's biggest moments have come from doing what I call "the other 50%" - for example how he met Brian Chesky, the co-founder of Airbnb by starting his college basketball team * We talk so much about pushing past "no." Why Creativity Is The Key To Leadership w/ Sen. Cory Booker

E

Cory Booker is one of those most compelling and dynamic voices in American politics: the former mayor of Newark, New Jersey, the subject of the 2005 documentary "Street Fight" that chronicles his initial 2002 bid for mayor, and he's particularly engaged on the topic of education reform - a subject that's near and dear to my own heart. He's also an incredibly candid and open personality who's willing to share many things that those in his position typically haven't - which is not only refreshing but ultimately makes him that much more effective as a leader. Today on the podcast, * Sen Booker is incredibly good at getting eyeballs on the causes he advocates for, and he gets into the tactics he uses * He talks very openly about the times he's fallen short and even outright failed - and how we turned those into valuable learning experiences. * The techniques Sen Booker he uses to take control during those inevitable moments where we get overwhelmed and feel our emotions getting away from us Enjoy! The Things All Creators Must Know + Believe

E

One of my most popular, widely shared, and (so I'm told) most impactful blog posts is one I did a few years back called "The 10 Things All Creatives (That's You) Must Know," a collection of hard-won lessons I've learned from my 20+ years in the trenches as a creator. And although it's a few years old I feel more confident than ever about the timeless value of these lessons -- and so this week on the podcast I'm bringing you an audio version of that blog post. Here's a sneak preview of what you can look forward to: * Experts aren't the answer. * Clients cannot tell you what they need. * Don't aim for 'better', aim for 'different'. * Big challenges create the best work. * Aesthetic sensibilities actually matter. * Simple is good. * Make mistakes, learn quickly. * "Value" is different from "price." * A-Gamers work with A-Gamers. * Real artists create. Piera Gelardi is the co-founder of Refinery29, one of the most important and influential lifestyle editorial companies on the internet with millions of visitors a day from just about every corner of the planet. It's one of those classic entrepreneur stories, starting with a few friends in a cramped makeshift office who had a ton of passion but not a lot of experience - they've had some ups and downs, made some pivots, but here they are - they're still standing, stronger than ever, and they've unquestionably made their mark on our culture with a voice that's distinctly different from that of mainstream fashion - one built on diversity, inclusion and community that's struck a chord with millennials. Why Creativity Is About To Radically Transform The World

E

Today I'm bringing you the audio version of a talk I gave at The Next Web conference in Amsterdam earlier this year on a topic that's top of mind for many of us, which is the rise of AI and automation and the implications it may have for our careers - whether you're a truck driver or a radiologist or a graphic designer, you've probably had a moment in the past year or two where you saw a news piece and asked yourself - "whoa - is a computer or a robot gonna put me out of a job?" Transform Your Consciousness w/ Jason Silva

E

If you're familiar with Jason then you know he's an incredibly unique human. And if you're not, then I'll do my best-- but you really just need to check out his work. He's a brilliant and insanely insightful creator whose work sits at the intersection of philosophy, personal development and film much like my own work. You may know him as the host of Nat Geo's "Brain Games," from his short film series "Shots Of Awe" or his latest show "Origins" which is in its debut season. It's really tough to put a label on his work, so instead of trying I'm simply going to echo his words - he calls them "espresso shots of philosophy" and while that's a bit of a mouthful it's also a very accurate characterization. The Formula For Peak Performance w/ Steven Kotler

E

Steven is an entrepreneur and writer whose work has appeared in just about every publication you can think of-- New York Times, Forbes, Wired, TIME, you name it and was nominated for a Pultizer for his book "A Small Furry Prayer. I wanted to have Steven on here because he has a very unique focus in his latest book "Stealing Fire": understanding peak human performance -- not in an abstract sense, but the specific mechanisms that make people like world-class athletes, Navy SEALs, and entrepreneurs able to do the incredible things they do and more importantly, how that formula can be reverse-engineered and applied to YOUR life. Today on the podcast, * We get deep into one of Steven's signature themes which is "flow:" the optimal state of consciousness where we feel + perform our best * Why mindfulness is a super important part of all this-- Steven says that many of us live in a constant state of mild fight or flight that overtaxes our nervous system * The implications of all this specifically for creatives - what Steven learned from studying ravers, CEOs, SEALs is actually directly applicable to us Enjoy! How What You Buy Can Change The World w/ Leila Janah

E

Leila Janah is a human dynamo and one of the most exciting voices in the world of social entrepreneurship. After starting her career in management consulting, she quit to pursue her passions full time and has founded TWO companies. The first is Samasource, a non-profit that lifts people out of poverty via hiring them to do data work - and their clients now include the likes of Walmart, eBay, Google. And more recently she started LXMI a luxury skincare brand that sources rare ingredients from poor countries and thereby helps lift women out of poverty. Oh - and in case she didn't have enough on her plate she's also the author of the forthcoming book Give Work, the thesis of which is that giving work is the most powerful solution for ending global poverty. Today on the podcast, * She tells the story of sending Reid Hoffman a message on LinkedIn (which he replied to) * Why it's limiting and ultimately a non-solution to operate from the idea that handouts are the answer to poverty - why "giving work" is the real answer * The power of surrounding yourself with the right people Enjoy! Overcome Fear & Self-Doubt w/ W. Kamau Bell

E

W. Kamau Bell is a veteran standup comedian, the creator and star of the hit CNN show "United Shades Of America" which is kicking off its 2nd season, host of a couple podcasts, one of which has probably the best title of any podcast ever - "Denzel Washington Is The Greatest Actor Of All Time Period" - and author of a bestselling book among many other things he's been part of over the course of his career. The word prolific does not even begin to describe this man. Today on the podcast, * How he went from his humble beginnings doing open mics in coffee shops and bars to getting his first TV show * He shares some super candid stuff about how despite appearing unflappable, on the inside - as he says - "it's all flaps." * You've probably heard me talk about the idea of "create the work you want to be paid to create," and Kamau has an amazing story about how he applied that exact idea Enjoy! Build A Life You Love w/ Chris Guillebeau

E

Chris Guillebeau is an author and entrepreneur - you may know him from his bestselling books like "The Art Of Noncomformity" and "The $100 Startup" or his popular essay "A Brief Guide To World Domination." He's also a prolific blogger and the brains behind the Worldwide Domination Summit. This interview is from a few years back, but I wanted to bring it back because Chris - along with Tim Ferriss and a few others - was among the first wave of people who pioneered the path that I've heard so many of you say that you want to be one. Today on the podcast, * We talk a lot about an idea that's really at the core of this show, which is that the answers to all of this are inside you. * We also get into the post-success comedown. If you've ever had a big win you know what I'm talking about. * Another big theme in this show is potential - how to understand your potential, what to do with that energy, and the power of living up to your potential. The Unfiltered Truth About Entrepreneurship w/ Adam Braun

E

Adam Braun is an author and entrepreneur who you may know from his work with Pencils of Promise, an organization that creates schools and other projects that bring education to underserved populations living in rural poverty. He's also the author of the book "The Promise Of A Pencil" and more recently the founder of a super exciting education startup called MissionU whose model is 1 year of intense, skill-based education with NO upfront tuition - instead, you give them a percentage of your income once you land that sweet job. Today on the podcast, * Why he walked away from a career in management consulting to dedicate himself to his passion of giving the rural poor access to education via Pencils Of Promise * We get into a topic I've been touching on a lot lately which is balance. As a new father and entrepreneur this is a big challenge for Adam and he speaks very candidly about the real tradeoffs he has to make between his company, his family and his health * On that note, he also shares some of the habits and hacks he's developed such as his journaling routine and practice of putting his phone in airplane mode in another room before going to bed Enjoy! James is the founder + driving force behind indie rock icons The Shins and partner in the new collage app Pasted. With over 20 years in the game, he's seen just about every facet of the music business – from tiny shows at dives bars to Billboard top 10 albums on major labels – and as you can imagine he's learned a thing or two along the way. Today on the podcast, * Longevity and stamina. How do you stay motivated and inspired after success and hardship, the industry, dealing with the "what's next" feeling and post-achievement comedown? * The artist-as-entrepreneur paradigm. Whether they like it or not, all artists are also entrepreneurs. What does "entrepreneur" mean to James? * Collaboration: How do you have co-creators? (eg. his Broken Bells collaboration with Danger Mouse). How do you develop the soft skills to the business? When do you compromise on creative differences and when do you decide to cut ties? Enjoy! Sell Yourself Without Selling Out with Marc Ecko

E

Marc is a creative entrepreneur who's probably best known as the founder of the apparel brand Ecko, which began in his parents' garage and eventually grew into the largest brand in streetwear with a global footprint and over $1 billion in revenue. He's also the author of Unlabeled: Selling Yourself Without Selling Out - the book we discuss in this episode - the creator of a video game called "Getting Up" and the founder of Complex Media. Today on the podcast, * Some super-actionable tactics for promoting your work - one that I really love is Marc's concept of a "swag bomb," which is a package that you deliver to someone to get their attention- for example when he'd send some Ecko gear to rappers. * Why the biggest barrier to success is - for most people - a self-imposed one: fear. Specifically, the fear of public or peer ridicule. * The power of humble beginnings. There's this idea that you have to have best-in-class tools from the jump in order to get your start and frankly, that's complete bs. Enjoy! Conquer Fear & Self-Doubt with Amanda Crew

E

Amanda Crew is an actress who's best known for playing Monica on the hit HBO show "Silicon Valley," which I absolutely love for skewering tech culture in a loving but deadly accurate way. If you haven't seen the show please, please do yourself a favor and check it out - season 4 recently premiered on HBO. But her career goes back many years: she's appeared in a ton of shows and movies like Smallville, Final Destination 3, Life As We Know It and much more. Today on the podcast, * Like almost everyone on my show, Amanda is a hyphen - she's a passionate photographer, although it took her a while to give herself permission to be more than an actor - she talks about overcoming the social bias that you can be good at more than one thing * She talks about the low point of her career a few years back when the recession and a writer's strike hit at the same time one of her movies flopped and she didn't work for nearly two years - and how rebuilding her career from scratch was actually the thing that made her believe in herself more than ever and conquer the imposter syndrome * We also get into the phenomenon of dealing with "what's next" - as an actor that's a constant thing for her: wrap a season of the show and there's the instant question of "ok so now what?" It's not an easy one for many people to answer and she has some great thoughts on it that apply to any creator. Enjoy!
