Emma: Hello Dr. Cabral, My mother has been diagnosed with Grave's and Thyroid Eye Disease. Her symptoms include proptosis in one eye, very low TSH and normal T4 & T3. Although all of her antibodies have shown very low or zero, even after repeat testing. Is there a specific imbalances or deficiencies you commonly see paired with low TSH ? What could be causing the proptosis if she doesn't have any antibodies? Could Candida be at play? What are your top recommendations for Grave's/Thyroid Eye Disease? So grateful for your support. Anonymous: If someone is sensitive or allergic to wormwood and/black walnut, what product or ingredients would you recommend instead to be able to do both a parasite protocol and a CBO protocol? It seems like omitting the microbial balance and parapro would not achieve the best results, but I can't tolerate either of these. Even using the smallest doses and titration, I get severe stomach pain when using these supplements. I have learned so much from your podcast. Thank you for all you do! Michelle: I'm always on a quest to source the best possible animal proteins I can find. Recently I went on a search for turkey, specifically turkey slices like deli meat. I know better than to buy any grocery store deli meats so I tried searching for local pasture raised turkeys but couldn't find anything except a whole bird. Then I referenced The Cornucopia Institutes Organic Poultry Scorecard which gave me one option I could find in the stores with a 4-bird rating but on further research of that company I found they only have a special Holiday bird that qualifies for the GAP step 5 rating and all their other birds are only GAP step 3, which means outdoor access, not pasture raised. Very frustrating and I've come to the conclusion that I'll probably need to buy a whole bird and cook it myself. What I am wondering though is even with the local pasture raised farms it's normal to supplement with an organic / non-gmo feed that is a grain product. I do not eat grains due to my autoimmune history. If I'm eating animal protein that had some grain feed during it's life span does that affect me? To quote Michael Pollan "You are what you eat eats." Check out today's questions: Lorena: Hi there! I'm a 28 year old Vata and IHP Level 1 and 2 certified. Recently, I've been noticing that my Oura ring has constantly been telling me that my heart rate has been elevated at night. My HRV as a result is much lower than usual. I haven't got one night of a normal heart rate and it's been in "red" in the Oura app (56-62 bpm. At the same time that this started happening, I started to feel some weird neurological symptoms similar to those in MCAS (intense anxiety especially after eating, heart palpitations, brain fog & more). I've also suddenly started to experience bloating and gas after whole food meals (not smoothies). I've never had digestive issues before and did the CBO a year ago for skin issues solely. Trying to figure out how to lower this heart rate at night. I've even lowered stressed massively (at work & stopped working out intensively). Any idea what could be going on? I take a good amount of magnesium before bed too and sometimes even melatonin. Waiting on stool test results because I want to rule out parasites & h pylori. But if the latter is negative, what else should I look at? Melanie: I always hear you talk about people with high blood pressure needing more potassium in their diet. They would therefore not have to worry too much about sodium. However, my dad has high blood pressure and a few weeks ago ended in the hospital as his potassium levels were very very elevated and it was life threatening. He has high blood pressure, diabetes type 2 etc… I was wondering how this can be possible? I thought everyone with high blood pressure usually had low potassium levels! Btw this event happened the day after he took the laxative to do a colonoscopy so not sure if this is relevant. Anonymous: Hi Stephen, I have a question about insulin. In the health world currently, there is A LOT of talk about blood sugar and insulin in regards to losing weight. I am regularly reading that insulin must be kept low because insulin halts fat oxidation. Therefore is insulin is up you can't burn fat. However, there is an abundance of research that shows that under isocaloric conditions, there is little to no difference between LCHF and HCLF diets. I knw you yourself are familiar with the rice, fruit, and fruit juice diet reearch which was basically all carbs and yet insulin sensitivity was improved and weight loss occured. Surely this would suggest energy balance is the overriding important factor in weight loss. If "fat can't be burned when insulin is present or high" how can such studies be explained? I'm currently getting my level 1 and I truly look forward to learning from you everyday. Ok so in regards to my question… My 7 year old son got covid about 3 weeks ago now. He got hit in the form of mostly diarrhea for two days. I'm only giving that piece of info because the current problem has only happened since having said virus. (In all his 7 years he has been sick about 4 other times.) He's been hit with the current problem about 3 times in the last two weeks. He'll be eating and his stomach will start to hurt really bad. One, was on Thanksgiving which I thought ok maybe all the different foods being combined. Then it happened again today two different times after eating something he always eats. Didn't hit him as hard but still came. His stomach does seem to settle once I give him this ginger drink. My mom intuition tells me something isn't right and I need to catch it before it develops into something worse. I have some ideas on where to start but I'd love your thoughts first. Its Really bad especially in the morning when he has to cough, clearing the pflem and scratchyness out. He is working outside around damp leaves quite a bit but doesn't have any other mold-symptoms... Since he was a little puppy his colds always got to his lungs and airways. Victoria: Hi Dr. Cabral, Someone I know has been in the hospital with double pneumonia and tuberculosis. The antibiotics weren't helping for awhile so they had to put her in an induced coma for a week and on a ventilator to keep her alive. Eventually, she left the hospital but then her ankles started hurting. After review by doctors, they found something called "mycobacterium haemophilum" that could be possibly infecting / eating away at her bone. They only had one very unfortunate solution for this to prevent it spreading to the rest of her body. I have a few questions. I know you are not supposed to give medical advice -- so I won't be asking for medical advice. If she would look to help to fix this dis - ease in her body naturally, what do you think the best solutions would be to start? I am trying to get some kind of a Naturopathic doctor to start working with her. Looking for any possible guidance though you may have. Wondering if this happened because of all the antibiotics she was pumped (7+ kinds) to keep the other infections at bay imbalanced her microbiome and body dramatically. F) always have cold hands and feet - especially during the winter. In those cold months, my fingers will often swell up and look inflamed from the cold. Any recommendations for raising my cortisol levels in the morning naturally? Thank you so much for taking the time to answer our community's questions :) I'm a Vata body type 29 year old woman currently working on healing my adrenal fatigue. I have elevated levels of cortisol in the PM and low cortisol in the AM. Unfortunately, I don't do very well with adrenal soothe due to histamines. I've tried it several times but it just doesn't agree with me. Any other alternative that you recommend? I can't take adrenal support in the morning because I already suffer from anxiety (funny given that my AM cortisol is low). Sleep is good, I track it with my Oura ring and take magnesium, DNS, omega 3, daily probiotic & vitamin D everyday. Maria: Sorry me again! I forgot to mention that I decided to take a break from heavy lifting and just stick to 10k steps every day and Workout 3x a week with resistance bands only. BMI 21 & 15% body fat percentage. I was doing a lot of sauna but I read that it might not be the best right now as it can be a stressor to my body. What are your thoughts? My workouts are not as intense so I don't really sweat. Sauna is the only option I have…After running the hormones test with your team, all of my hormones are also on the lower side (including estrogen). So I don't want to push my body too hard. Jenna: Do you think that drinking pomegranate juice has more benefits or more downsides? I know drinking any juice without the fiber of the fruit will spike blood sugar, but I also know pomegranate is great for antioxidants. Would you recommend drinking this? (maybe in small amounts?) Darren: Hey Dr Cabral. Wishing you, your family and Equi Life team all the best in the new year. By the time you get this it'd likely be finished but this question is for future reference. I got the Equi Life Activated B Complex, Activated Multivitamin and DNS recently. I looked at the daily value percentages and was wondering if it was possible to take 1 capsule instead of 2 suggested for the B Complex and 2 instead of 4 capsules suggested for the activated multivitamin. I'm trying to stay healthy and do what's right while still keeping budget but I'd do what's right if I actually have to do the suggested number. Also with regard to the DNS, is there any reason why it has added sugar in the ingredients? Is it for a particular reason or merely for taste? Christina: Are infrared sauna and proteolytic enzymes (taken on an empty stomach) safe when you have breast implants? Thank you for the wonderful information provided in your podcasts. I'm an IHP, and I have a client with Down syndrome (18 yr old female) who is starting to experience symptoms of acute regression. We have done lab testing and are working on correcting her "root cause" imbalances, but I was wondering if you could point me toward any resources (podcasts, websites, etc) to further my education in this area since I don't know much about acute regression and how to help "reverse" it naturally. All of the information I've found so far is from more of a conventional perspective, so any of your insight would be very helpful! Adrianne: Hey Doc! Thanks for showing up everyday to make the world a healthier place. My sister in law was told by her dermatologist that she has barnacles. She showed me one next to her eye. Google calls it Seb-k and says the cause is unknown. I am thinking maybe a deficiency or toxicity. Can you shed any light on the subject? Thanks! Laura: I would like to ask two questions.1- I have recently purchased your Daily Nutritional Support. On the list of ingredients is Zinc Picolinate. According to some studies it has been found that this form of Zinc may cause liver damage. Do you believe this to be true? If so are you considering changing to another form of Zinc? 2- I have read your book The Rain Barrel Effect. I enjoyed it and am very interested in helping a family member with MS. Is there any truth to ghee is used in ayurveda as the first thing in the morning on an empty stomach as doing this will lower cholesterol levels, aid in unblocking "clogged" arteries (by preventing endothelial cells) and getting a daily supply of omega 3s and vitamin E? Or is that overstating its properties? I know it's a saturated fat but are there any concerns with using it or who should avoid it if any? Thanks for your help Concerned Mother: Dear Dr. Cabral, I've been listening to your show for a while now and am working with one of your health coaches. I'm very happy seeing some changes in my own health. I know my son needs help too and I'm hoping you can tell us the best way to begin. He is 9 years old and was adopted as an infant. We know his birth mother smoked regularly during the pregnancy. He had a regular delivery but was not breast fed. He's had a few rounds of antibiotics over the years for rashes that turned into infections. He is overweight (none of the other members of our family are so I wonder if genetics play a role in that) and has recently developed asthma. He has always had a runny nose and gets rashes and hives regularly. He has learning disabilities and when he was younger he needed occupational therapy for eating and walking. He is still lagging in physical skills and coordination and will stuff his mouth full and not chew his food well no matter how much coaching we offer. I sometimes think his sense of fullness may not be functioning well. Every time I go to the doctor for any of these issues I end up feeling blamed for his weight but they don't offer any really helpful advice. I have been taking it consistently for the last 5 or so years, ranging from a steady 5mg per day, to larger less-frequent doses (10-15mg) on strength training days only. As someone who both exercises frequently and has been trying to heal ongoing IBS/gut permeability issues, glutamine seems like a great dual-benefit supplement but I just want to check there aren't any long-term downsides. In line with with what you teach on mindset and motivational Mondays, I believe you'd lean toward avoiding porn given what it can do your brain but are there benefits to not ejaculating or abstaining over a given period? One elder while growing up said its always good to keep the "blood flowing" there even if you don't climax while I see so-called experts saying you should often cause of benefits ranging from better sleep to prostrate health. I read somewhere in ayurveda where they said different doshas should have different requirements. Hope this didn't come across too crass. Do you have thoughts on this? Erin: Asthma! What is the root cause of asthma? I have been told magnesium deficiency but would love to hear your input. Thanks so much I really do love listening to your podcasts. I'm seeing good feedback about it in regards to helping with menstrual cramps. Apparently it's a patch that you put over your uterus and it "works to pick up the message your body is sending out, rerouting it and absorbing it like a sponge using nanocapacitors." I'm a tiny bit skeptical on how this works and if it's safe and wanted your perspective before I try it. Sheba: Hello, I was asked about ways to detox the the vaccine. Do you have any suggestions? I want to share this information as unbias as possible and I will represent IHP to the best of my abilities. Please let me know if you have any advice or suggestions on this matter. Best, Sheba Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral, I am 27 years old, resistance train 5-6 days a week, and have a very good body composition. Since high school, I have had a large bump under my right nipple that has not gone away. I got a sonogram in college that did not show any cancer or tumor, and it seems closer to the description of gyno, but only on one side. Overtraining during high school and college impacted my hormones, of which I am still trying to fully recover from. The bump was noticeable before I began rigorously training for athletics, but I am sure the hormone damage did not help in it subsiding. My question is as to whether or not you would recommend looking into your DHEA supplement, or if I am too young to begin something like that. My life now is fairly stressful, but manageable, I am an engineer, lift weights (as previously mentioned), walk at least 10,000 steps a day, eat very healthy, and also struggle with digestive issues (story for another day). Cabral :) This podcast is my favourite thing of the day.. I listen to it while preparing my lemon water and smoothie in the morning :) Which brings me to my question(/-s).. I usually make a huge smoothie with everything you can think of (frozen berries, leafy greens, protein powder and then lots of herbs and spices, mushroom powders, ginger & turmeric root, etc. It comes out pretty big so I started freezing half of it for the days I don't have the time to make it.. does freezing & then defrosting destroy all the good benefits of all these ingredients which are blended together? My second question about it is, even though I eat quite a big bowl of it, I still feel quite hungry and shaky after it.. like I don't have energy in my muscles to do any real movement or exercise.. that feeling sometimes stays with me for most of the day or until I eat something solid (which usually makes me feel bloated or uncomfortable in the stomach).. is this weird, considering I do use healthy fats and proteins and carbs in the smoothie (and it's a really big amount of it)? The American Heart Association director & senior scientist went on to promote liquid vegetable oils corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil, which are high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, and monosaturated like canola oil. How does one tell their family, coworkers, clients and friends to stay away from those plant based oils when the AHA, of all people, are promoting them? Darren: Hey Dr. Cabral. I have a question about HSP's or Highly Sensitive Person's. I'm one if them, however, I'm not balanced YET in my mind and body. So my question would be, is there an underlying physical root cause behind the reason people become HSP's? Is it something that will go away after rebalancing the body and mind? I don't talk for others HSP's, but at least in my self, I can se patterns of Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Is there a connection between HSP's and ASD? I would love to hear your viewpoint of this specific topic. Anonymous: Hi Doc, I'm an IHP level 1 & 2 certified. I did all labs and all protocols accordingly and maintain a healthy routine based on the destress protocol. I was doing very well until I travelled to South America and started experiencing a lot of anxiety. The anxiety is worse after I eat, especially breakfast. I'm not sure what happened. The breakfast didn't change as I took all of the ingredients from home (except oats which I bought local GF oats) and my supplement protocol remained the same. I even stopped all supplements to see if that would change anything but anxiety, especially heart palpitations is still very much present and as I said, get's very bad after meals. I didn't have this before travelling and I'm not experiencing any digestive issues whatsoever. No bloating, gas, pain, nothing. It's just this shortness of breath, heart palpitations that is driving me insane. I've been eating the same breakfast for ages (banana, DNS, GF oats, nuts/seeds) with no issues but maybe I've developed an allergy to one of those suddenly? If it isn't a food allergy what could it be? I also get it after lunch (not as bad) as breakfast though. Dinner is less but still present. Anonymous: Hi Doc, me again. Forgot to mention that when this anxiety started, I've been having a lot of random body twitches and been very sensitive to external sounds. Funnily enough, it get's better when I'm around people and having a conversation so basically whenever I'm distracted. It get's really bad when I'm by myself (for example, when I'm on my laptop) and focused on something. Would you say that this could be a symptom of the anxiety? Have you ever come across someone having these twitches from anxiety? Or could this be something more serious? I'm a new RN and just accepted a job working from 7p - 7a, 3 days per week (the days I work every week will vary). Besides ensuring good sleep hygiene and optimal nutrition what are some actions I can take to ensure proper sleep and switch between days and nights? I hope you had a lovely day so far. My question is related to multivitamins. I've heard so much controversy on this specific topic and there are so many individuals that state that multivitamins made from whole foods are the only multi vitamins that really work. That is why they're more expensive because they're the only ones that the body truly absorbs. This means that I've been taking a synthetic form of vitamins for years! For example, ascorbic acid for vitamin C, methylcobalamin as B12, etc. Apparently these are all synthetic so not absorbed and I should look for a whole food vitamin instead. What are your thoughts? Victor: I was listening to a house call and you mentioned how you don't recommend straight curcumin on a daily basis. I've been taking 500mg of curcumin with bioperine as part of my daily foundational protocol on top of DNS, omega-3pm, vitamin D, magnesium, vit C, zinc etc. I don't have inflammation but I just take it to optimise my health. What are your thoughts? Lindsey: Hello Dr. Cabral. I hope you are having an amazing day. Your podcast archive is always where I turn to when a friend is dealing with anything health related. I was surprised recently when I couldn't find a podcast talking about Guillain-Barré syndrome. Can you shed any light on this and possible ways to heal the root cause? You are much appreciated! Don: Recently, my tongue began burning throughout the day as if it is being continually scalded by boiling water. I have been told that Burning Mouth Syndrome may go away on its own in 3-5 years. Alina: I'm going to join all the others in thanking your for the work you do for the health community and for my own education! I have been struggling with SIBO for a few years and finally now on the CBO protocol. I recently have learned about food combining and food layering. I have listened to all your podcasts on it but still have a few specific questions. Are nut butters or protein bars with nut butters easier to digest than nuts in whole form? What protein will food combine well with oatmeal, quinoa, or rice? I see only carbohydrates and proteins pair well with vegetables (and carbohydrates with fats/oils as well). I love oatmeal but have heard it's important to have protein in each meal. I'm unsure how to do this with proper food combining. Also, should salads with a protein (like fish or eggs) not have dressing on it since protein does not pair with oils? What combines well with hemp hearts? Thanks I'm advance! P.S. I would ask your support team but I don't see an option unless you have Facebook? Mary: I never used to have scalp issues and about 3 years ago I began to get really bad folliculitis. Thank you for what you do! I had a baby in July of 2020, an emergency c section after being in labor for almost 3 days. Ever since birth I feel like my body is holding onto a lot of inflammation. I know a c section is a major surgery so it would take a while to heal, but now being 15 months postpartum I am getting very discouraged I will never look the way I did before again. I am already gluten and dairy free - and did a poop test with X Company and have cut out those foods as well (most cruciferous vegetables/nuts/beans etc). I am at a loss as to what could be going on. I workout fairly regularly, drink lots of water and eat relatively healthy. Could this be parasite or mold related? Or is my body holding on to weight because I am still breastfeeding? How do I go about figuring out how to get back to my body pre baby? My specialist had a CT scan done and he noticed that one of my kidneys had shrunk quite a bit and believes only the one kidney is functioning but doing well. Is there anything I can do to try to regrow the shrunk kidney (most likely the MD said from a sports injury or since birth) I had told him I took a number of hits in physical sports growing up. Nadia: Dear Doctor Cabral, thank you so much for all you do to help the community and for your very interesting podcast! I would like to ask if you could indicate me in which direction we could look regarding my dad's health. He is 62 years old, 5feet7 and weighs now less then 125 pounds. He has always been thin (even though he eats 3 times more then the rest of the family) but muscular. But now he really has just skin on his bones even though he still eats a lot (and healthy). He goes to the bathroom at least once a day, sometimes after every meal, which is very good. And his blood work came back normal. He's been trying to gain weight for years but he just gets more and more skinnier and is pretty preoccupied. He is very active all day, always working around the house, in the garden, loves hiking and biking. A Nutritionist told him years ago that it will be impossible for him to gain weight and that it's much easier for overweight people to lose weight. I have seen recently a somewhat controversial opinion on D3 supplementation and would like your opinion. Usually, I'd gloss over something like this, but considering the high reputation of the source in the functional/integrative space, I thought I'd get your highly valued opinion. Quote… "D3 is not what they measure in a vitamin D test. They measure 25D. The problem is, they should be measuring 1,25D, and better yet, the ratio between the two. Supplementing D3 will raise your 25D levels which shuts down your vitamin D receptors and innate immune system function. Supplementing D3 above what we naturally get in food will massively increase calcium absorption. In a hard-drinking water world, that causes hypercalcemia, magnesium and K2 deficiency." Jamie: Hi Dr Cabral thank you for all you do. I have been listening for a very long time. I'll try to keep this short as I did try to search if you have talked about this before but couldn't find anything. I currently see a Dr who claims to be an integrative doctor local to me. I'm 33 year old female. I weigh around 130#. My symptoms have been thinning hair, nail fungus, zero libido, zero energy and pms 2 weeks prior to menstruating, (this has been for many years) increase of stress the past two years due to my job. . He did lab work and my thyroid levels are low, and vitamin d was low. He also told me that I should take Progesterone 100mg qhs for the pms symptoms / low energy. Long story short I'm taking t3/t4 15mcg daily (along with fish oil, vitamin d, b complex, magnesium from EquiLife) I had more lab work done recently and my IGF-1 is 208 (says it should be 280) and he is recommending Sermorelin therapy. I googled it and it sounds fantastic. All the things I need (energy, libido etc) but my question is being only 33 (no kids) is going to harm me in the long run taking these hormones? I know you can't tell me to stop, I just need advice on really what this Sermorelin therapy is and if it is going to hurt me in the long run taking progesterone "forever". Check out today's questions: Ryan: I know you're not a big fan of artificial sweeteners, but from what I've been able to find in the research, there seems to be many meta-analyses and RCTs, in humans, showing that there is no negative effect on bodyweight, glycemic variability or the microbiome, or that there is actually beneficial effects on bodyweight. Studies that show otherwise either seem to be in animals, or providing extremely large doses that would not be realistic for everyday life, or both. Is this a case of the science not being caught up to clinical practice and current times? Or is there definitive research showing the negative effects of artificial sweeteners in humans, in realistic doses? Would love if to hear your valued opinion on this. Thanks for all that you do! Marianne: Hi Dr. Cabral, I love your show. My husband was diagnosed with PVC or Pulmonary Ventricular Contraction. He is on the medication Metoprolol to regulate his heartbeat. He's trying to reduce his stress at work and reduce his alcohol consumption. He drinks about 2 cups of coffee per day. Is there anything else he can do or take to help regulate the heartbeat without medication? Anonymous: Huge fan of the podcast, I listen everyday! One topic I've never heard discussed is the use of anti-viral medications. I've heard a lot about antibiotics and the bad effects they can have on our guts, but I've never heard about anti-virals. The reason I ask, my 3 yr old has been taking low dose acyclovir daily for the past year to prevent frequently recurring cold sores. We think they picked this up from an extended family member or daycare, since nobody else in our family has ever had a cold sore. A year ago they were getting them about every other week. When one would show up, we'd immediately start acyclovir to knock it out quickly, but when we'd stop, another one would pop up a week or so later. We've also tried low arginine high lysine diet, which didn't seem to make much of a difference. I asked our pediatrician about taking a lysine supplement, but they didn't feel comfortable with that b/c of age. The low dose daily has worked really well for us, but now I'm concerned it may be causing other problems. Since early July, I've noticed hives about every other day on my child. They're mostly on the legs and torso, not huge, and they don't seem too bothersome, but I'm wondering if long term use of acyclovir could've caused this, thoughts? And any thoughts on daily lysine use? Tony: Hi Dr C, I can't find anything on your podcasts about amino acid BPC-157. Have asked your support team they said to ask here. Carpenter since a young boy, now in my 60s, used a lot of pressure on my knees for my job property developing, floor tiling etc, at one point (in my 50s) it was so bad I couldn't get up off the floor; lucky enough found a fantastic acupuncturist which made it a lot better. Unfortunately can't find him anymore. Job slowed down but knee pain got a lot worse, struggled to walk on my right knee, even considered knee replacement, prefer to avoid GPs, hospitals etc and go down an alternative route. My daughter had me on a decent turmeric/curcumin, MSM, Proteolytic Enzymes and arnica oil, until she found BPC-157. After a few days of this I could walk. The only thing that bothers her is that it is synthetic. So we gave it a couple of weeks then stopped. Knee has been overall good since apart from an odd day here and there but to go from barely walking to what feels normal is more than expected. My mood has also improved maybe because I can walk! Previously felt as though the bones or ligaments in my knee were rubbing together and there was no fluid. Normal weight, 5'9 don't do any strenuous exercise, other than my job and walking. Thank you Elizabeth: Hi Dr Cabral, My dad has had a dark spot (almost black and the size of a small mole) on the very right corner edge of his lower lip for the past year or so which has not changed. He has no desire to go to GP (had a few wrongful family experiences of being told something awful by a GP and it turning out to be wrong, so don't want to be looped into any fear mongering or pharmaceuticals). He is fine otherwise, in 60s, generally in good health apart from some stressful phases, eats a balanced diet, does love wine but never smoked/taken meds. I'm thinking maybe Angiokeratoma / vitamin deficiency or possibly hormone related. I've looked at the natural topical remedies that may help but wondered what may be best and whether topical iodine could be a solution? P.s. are you familiar with Indiumease?
